Domaine de Triennes
Two illustrious figures in Burgundy, Jacques Seysses, founder of Domaine Dujac, and Aubert de Villaine, owner of DRC, founded the Triennes Domaine in Aix en Provence with their friend, Michel Macaux. The estate’s cool microclimate and clay-limestone soils immediately attracted the pair. The wines are influenced by their Burgundian ties: showing excellent structure and balance. The cooler microclimate helps the grapes retain acidity and finesse. The rose is primarily Cinsault with some Grenache, Syrah and Merlot. The Saint Auguste bottling is a reserve selection of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Both bottlings are aged in seasoned barrels from Domaine Dujac.

Case-12 Domaine de Triennes Rose, IGP Var 2014 750ML ($199.95) $149 special, 3 cases avaukabke
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 88 points “Light, bright pink. Spice-accented red berries and orange on the incisive nose and in the mouth. Starts off taut and linear, then fleshes out quickly, picking up a subtle touch of anise with air. The spicy note repeats on the finish, which is firmed by a jolt of tangy acidity.” JR
Domaine de Triennes Saint Auguste, IGP Var 2012 750ML ($21.95) $18 special, 24 bottles available
Case-12 Domaine de Triennes Saint Auguste, IGP Var 2012 750ML ($229.95) $189 special, 1 case available
Winery note “Saint Auguste is a selection of the best cuvées of Syrah, Cabernet-Sauvignon and Merlot. The robe is a rich dark purple with bright ruby highlights. It offers alluring aromas of ripe black cherries, nutmeg and clove. It is full and concentrated and is a wine that can be enjoyed upon release and over the following ten to fifteen years.”

Spottswoode Winery
Arriving in September 2015
Spottswoode Vineyard Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon, St Helena 2012 ($89.95) $79 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 92 points “Bold, intense and racy, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Lyndernhurst wraps around the palate with supple fruit, expressive aromatics and a silky, inviting finish that gives the wine so much of its immediacy and pure appeal. The style is round and succulent to the core; in other words classic 2012. Dark red stone fruits, spices, new leather and mint meld into the generous finish in this pretty Cabernet from Spottswoode.”
Spottswoode Family Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon, St. Helena 2012 750ML ($199.95) $179 pre-arrival special
Robert Parker 96+ points “The opaque purple-hued 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a glorious bouquet of crème de cassis, spring flowers, a Pauillac-like lead pencil note, and background new oak. The overall impression is one of restraint combined with richness. This full-bodied effort possesses good acidity and ripe tannin. It has been crafted for the long-term. The hallmarks of great Spottswoode wines are their purity and elegance combined with serious power. The 2012 has that in abundance. This youthful, reserved Cabernet will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring, and will keep for two decades or more.”
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon comes across as surprisingly medium in body and not as explosive as I had expected, perhaps a reflection of its recent bottling. Today the 2012 shows the more suave, silky side of the year, with considerable early appeal and pure radiance, but less in the way of structure. Hints of mocha, spices and crushed flowers add nuance on the finish. All things considered, today the 2012 performs in line with the vintage, but does not appear to be the overachiever it has been in recent years.”

Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Reservee 2012 750ML ($89.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94 points “One of my favorite wines, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Réservée is a classic. Beautiful on the nose, with notions of ground pepper, wild herbs, minerality and smoked plum and dark fruit, it’s medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated and has plenty of tannin that comes through on the finish. Similar in style to a lighter-weight 2010, drink this beauty anytime over the coming 12-15 years.” JD
Opus One Proprietary Red, Napa Valley 2010 1.5L ($899.95) $779 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 97 points “One of the highlights among the more recent releases, the 2010 Opus One is flat-out gorgeous. Dark cherries, plums, graphite, cassis and pencil shavings are all woven together in a fabric of notable class and elegance. The 2010 stands out for its exceptional minerality, tension and pure power. Readers will have to be patient. This is a picture perfect rendering of this great Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon vintage.” AG

Azienda Agricola Azelia
Cavalier Lorenzo Scavino founded Azelia in 1920 by from his family’s vineyards in the Castiglione Falletto. His son, Alfonso, began bottling the wine for export. The estate is 16 hectares of old-vine vineyards that are green harvested to ensure very low yields. Luigi, the fourth generation winemaker, manages the estate with his wife, Lorella, and son, Lorenzo. His aim is to grow the best possible grapes, which in turn will result in the most complex wine. The wine is made with both traditional and modern influences. It is temperature controlled during primary and malolactic fermentation using only natural, ambient yeasts. The wines are aged in barriques and large oak casks and are unfined and unfiltered to retain complexity. The Barolo Normale shows finesse with a rich body. It is produced from vines in the Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d’Alba with an average age of 45 years. The Bricco Fiasco is from the steep hill in Castiglione Falletto. It was produced from vines averaging 65 years in age and shows floral notes with ripe tannins. The wine spent 2 years in small oak barrels. The Margheria was produced from 50 year old vines in the Serralunga. It spent 28 months in large oak casks. The wine shows expressive notes of black fruit and spices with rich earthiness. The San Rocco is a rich and lush wine, aged for 2 years in small barrels, with fruit and spice notes, accented by black licorice. The vines average 55 years in age and are planted in clay and calcareous soils.

Antonio Galloni 89 points “The 2013 Dolcetto d’Alba Bricco dell’Oriolo is very pretty in this vintage. High altitude vineyards in Montelupo Albese yield an especially floral, lifted Dolcetto long on personality and class. Pine, mint, crushed flowers, dark red cherries and a slight gamy note add the final nuances of complexity.” AG
Azelia di Luigi Scavino Langhe Nebbiolo 2013 750ML ($24.95) $19 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Azelia di Luigi Scavino Langhe Nebbiolo 2013 750ML ($249.95) $199 pre-arrival special (that’s only $16.58/bottle!)

Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2010 Barbera d’Alba Punta shows just enough evolution of fruit to render that subtle air of sophistication that distinguishes it. Black cherry, raspberry and blackberry preserves are laced with spice, dark clove and tobacco. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2017.” WA

Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2011 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is pretty but almost unusually polished and silky for a site that tends to produce much firmer and more tannic wines. Crushed flowers, red berries and mint all add to a sense of aromatic lift, nuance and total class. In 2011, the Bricco Fiasco is all about finesse.” AG

Azelia di Luigi Scavino ‘San Rocco’, Barolo DOCG 2011 750ML ($89.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Azelia di Luigi Scavino ‘San Rocco’, Barolo DOCG 2011 750ML ($799.95) $649 pre-arrival special (that’s only $54.08/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 95 points “As it usually is, the 2011 Barolo San Rocco is the darkest and richest of the Azelia Barolos, but it too is quite polished in this vintage. Dark red cherries, licorice, spices and new leather flesh out in a Barolo that shows the depth of Serralunga, but with gorgeous mid-palate pliancy, silky tannins and soft contours for a young Barolo. Here, too, the wine’s balance is incredibly alluring, especially since the San Rocco has a history of drinking well throughout its entire life.” AG
Wine Spectator 93 points “Licorice and sweet spice notes grace the cherry and tar flavors in this intense and compact red. All the components are well-proportioned, but this needs time to come together. Offers a classic Serralunga profile. Best from 2019 through 2035.” WS
Azelia di Luigi Scavino Margheria, Barolo DOCG 2011 750ML ($89.95) $66 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Azelia di Luigi Scavino Margheria, Barolo DOCG 2011 750ML ($799.95) $699 pre-arrival special (that’s only $58.25/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 96 points “Iron, smoke, spices, rose petal, lavender and mint meld into a core of dark red fruit in the 2011 Barolo Margheria. Here, too, the style is all about finesse, nuance and complexity. Firm tannins convey an overall impression of classicism. The Margheria is the most classic of the wines in the Scavino range. Three years in cask, with natural malos the spring after the harvest are among the choices that give the Margheria its unique personality. This is a terrific showing from the Margheria, a wine that has blossomed considerably since I last tasted it.” AG
Azelia di Luigi Scavino Voghera Brea Riserva, Barolo DOCG 2007 750ML ($149.95) $119 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 93 points “Cherry and berry flavors combine with wild herbs, musk, cedar, anise and leather accents in this dense, muscular red. Complex and savory, turning more supple with air on the long finish. Best from 2019 through 2036.”
Antonio Galloni 91 points “A refined, sensual wine for Serralunga, the 2007 Barolo Riserva Voghera Brea, from vineyards in Serralunga, flows across the palate with layers of soft, sensual fruit. This is a bit reserved for the year and less fleshy than most 2007s, but it has good depth and plenty of harmony. The Riserva was aged in cask.” AG

Giacomo Borgogno
Representing the historic roots of Barolo, the Borgogno winery is a touchstone for Barolo with over 250 years of winemaking in the area. This historic house was founded in 1761 by Bartolomeo Borgogno, but its real history begins when, in 1920, Cesare Borgogno, the youngest of five siblings, took over management of the family estate. A striking and charismatic figure, he immediately conveyed a sense of enthusiasm and brought about substantial innovations, leading to worldwide distribution of Borgogno wines. Upon the death of Cesare Borgogno in 1968, the running of the company passed to his granddaughter Ida and her future husband, Franco Boschis, who had both been closely involved in the operation, and then to their children Cesare and Giorgio.
In 2008, the Boschi family sold the Borgogno winery to Italian entrepreneur Oscar Farinetti, but the winery at its core has remained very much the same. In addition to improvements around the estate, the introduction of a new owner brought to an end any wines made from purchased fruit, allowing the winery to focus on their estate bottlings, including their plots in top Barolo crus. Winemakers and original owners Cesare and Giorgio remained at the winery for several years to oversee the transition, and, starting in 2012, Andre Farinetti completed his oenology studies and took over the helm.Located in prized Barolo territory, the 20 hectare Borgogno estate draws on vines from the surrounding crus of Cannubi, Liste , Fossati, and San Pietro. Winemaking at the estate is the definition of traditional. Vinification follows the formula of long maceration and extended aging in large casks, typically beginning in stainless steel before moving to small oak barrels where the wine is aged for at least 4 years. The winery has recently begun to focus on vinfying each separate parcel to retain the fruit’s integrity and capture the terroir’s identity in their single vineyard bottlings. A calling card for the estate is longevity, they are celebrated for their well- stocked cellar of old wines, and the wines themselves are capable of aging for over 20 years, a treat for any lover of traditional Barolo.

Giacomo Borgogno & Figli No Name 2010 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 14 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 91-93 points “Proprietor Oscar Farinetti continues to bottle one cask of Barolo designated juice as Langhe Nebbiolo No Name in protest to the declassification of one of his wines a few years back. Consumers are the beneficiaries, as the No Name is one of the best wines in the market in its price range. The 2010 bursts from the glass with freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries and spices. A totally seductive wine, the 2010 impresses for its purity, raciness and sheer beauty. Sweet perfumed notes add lift on the finish. Winemaker Andrea Farinetti gave the 2010 18 days on the skins, less than his other Nebbiolos, but that just makes the wine more accessible young. Readers who can find the 2010 No Name should not hesitate. It is a brilliant effort.” AG

Giacomo Borgogno & Figli No Name 2011 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 special, 36 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 90 points “The 2011 Langhe Nebbiolo No Name is a pretty wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Delicate and medium in body, the 2011 is laced with expressive violets, rose petals, mint and sweet red cherries. Dusty tannins complement the otherwise supple finish.” AG
Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Cannubi 2008 750ML ($179.95) $119 special, 22 bottles available
James Suckling 96 points “A dense, chewy wine with plum and dried fruit character. Lots of mineral, sandy and balsamic character. Full body, ripe tannins and a flavourful finish. Structured and rich. Serious Cannubi. Needs at least three or four years of bottle age.” JS
Antonio Galloni 94 points “Violets, tar, smoke, rose petals, spices and dark fruit are some of the many notes that emerge from the 2008 Barolo Cannubi. An intense, dramatic wine for the year, the 2008 boasts layered fruit and equally thrilling structure, even if at times it is a bit rustic. This is a decidedly burly wine from Cannubi, a vineyard mostly associated with finesse. It will be interesting to see how things come together in bottle. Today, it is the wine’s striking inner perfume that makes me most hopeful for the future.” AG

Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Fossati 2008 750ML ($119.95) $66 special, 23 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 93 points “A mesmerizing wine, the 2008 Barolo Fossati opens with hints of plum, black cherry, menthol, violets and licorice. There is an elusiveness to the Fossati that is marvelous to behold, as the wine seems to constantly change in the glass. Now that it is in bottle, the wine has shut down a bit, but its inner sweetness and perfume are still very much in evidence.” AG

Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Vigna Liste, Barolo DOCG 2008 750ML ($119.95) $79 special, 36+ bottles available
Antonio Galloni 93+ points “Cool veins of bracing minerality form the backbone in Borgogno’s 2008 Barolo Liste. Today, the 2008 is virtually impenetrable, as the vintage and the site have combined to produce a big, powerful Barolo that will require considerable cellaring before it is ready to show all its cards. Still, there is a lot to like here, especially for those who can be patient. Tar, smoke, incense and scorched earth all add gravitas on the close, but with more time in the glass some of the sweeter notes begin to emerge. The 2008 Liste is shaping up to be magnificent.” AG

Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva DOCG 2006 1.5L ($219.95) $149 special, 2 magnums available
James Suckling 95 points “Aromas of sausages, ripe fruit and flowers turn to mushrooms and truffles. Full body, with velvety tannins and a decadent finish. A wine that changes continually in the glass. This is delicious and exciting now. Late release of this wine. Why wait to open and drink this?”
Robert Parker 94 points “The 2006 Barolo Riserva is also impressive with a streamlined and elegant feel enhanced by pretty accents of dried flower, tar, spice, cassis and black pepper. There’s a delicate and mysterious aspect to the wine that keeps your attention focused. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.”
Wine Spectator 93 points “Dense, vibrant and packed with cherry and raspberry flavors, this red shows eucalyptus, tobacco and leather accents. Tight and resonant, with a lingering aftertaste of fruit, mineral and spice. Best from 2015 through 2032. 1,665 cases made.”
Antonio Galloni 92 points “Smoke, tobacco, licorice, leather, spices and dried cherries all meld together in the 2006 Barolo Riserva. The 2006 spent 6 years in cask, which has dried out the fruit and given the flavors slightly more tertiary nuances. In my view there are very few wines – anywhere in the world – that can support this much time in barrel without losing freshness. Dried cherries, tobacco and earthiness linger on the close.”

Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo DOCG 2007 1.5L ($219.95) $149 special, 6 magnums available
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2007 Barolo is gorgeous. In keeping with the style of the house, it boasts a considerably firm core of tannin that supports the fruit. There is plenty of 2007 intensity and richness in the glass, but those elements are balanced by the wine’s pure structure and inner tension. The 2007 can be enjoyed young if given some air, and it should drink nicely for a dozen years, if not longer. Even with all the tannin, I don’t see this being an especially long-lived Barolo.” AG

Dark red cherries, plums, tobacco, wild flowers, savory herbs and tobacco are some of the many notes that emerge from the glass. Over the last two years, the 2008 has blossomed beautifully in bottle. This is the best bottle I have tasted so far. The 2008 is a blend of fruit from San Pietro, Bricco delle Viole and Cannubi/San Lorenzo, all in the village of Barolo.” AG

Germany – By the Vineyard
Mosel – Wehlener Sonnenuhr
Wehlen Sonnenuhr, nestled in the middle of the Mosel region, is one of Germany’s top vineyards for Riesling, and is named for the sundial in the vineyard. The vineyard is classified by the VDP (an organization of top German estates) as an Erste Lage or “First Growth” vineyard. This is comparable to the Grand Cru classification in Burgundy. The vineyard is south-west facing and at a steep angle of 35 degrees, which helps capture the elusive sunlight in the region. The soil is completely Devonian blue slate. The wines produced from the vineyard are some of the best of all German Rieslings: showing freshness, minerality and vibrancy, linear focus and impressive longevity especially from such renowned estates as JJ Prum and J. Christoffel Jr.

Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese 2008 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 special, 30 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93+ points “The Prum 2008 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese – as with the corresponding Kabinett – is aromatically more marked by the residues of fermentation than are its immediate siblings. Hints of mango, quince, and musk added to the more predictable apple, vanilla, and liquid floral perfume and lend this an exotic touch, while its mineral side is dominated by striking salinity that enhances the savory stimulation of a long finish as well as offering a fascinating foil to the wine’s creaminess of texture and sheer ripeness. And while the nose needs to clear up here, the palate displays a remarkable sense of clarity to a wealth of flowers and spices. The wine seems to coat the palate while hovering above it, to seduce without touching. This should put on quite a show over the next 30 or more years.” WA

Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2007 750ML ($69.95) $56 special, 2 bottles available

With richness yet delicacy and lift it saturates the palate with rich fruit, liquid flowers, vanilla cream, and savory, saline, shrimp shell reduction-like mineral essences. This intense, pure, subtly and truly nobly botrytized Auslese has umami with a capital “U”. WA
Wine Spectator 94 points “Pungent aromas of slate and flowers give way to peach and lime in this unevolved Riesling. The texture is supersilky, with great harmony among all the elements. Terrific length. Needs time. Best from 2014 through 2040.” WS
Meulenhof Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2010 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 22 bottles available
From the Importer “Since 1337 the property at Meulenhof has shifted between royalty and Cistercian monks, following Napoleonic secularization, and since 1919 has been led by the Justen family, with Stephan Justen at the helm since 1990. Located in the Middel Mosel village of Erden, one can see why the estate vineyards were most attractive to both the Counts of Sponheim and the Cistercian Convent- holdings in the steep, terraced Erdener Treppchen and prestigious Prälat have long been revered for their superior wines, and upstream the Devonian blue slate of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr produce wines of intense minerality and elegance.”

Lovely sweet and intense, but also delicate on the palate, this medium to full-flavored 7.5% alcohol wine reveals a great elegance and finesse and finishes with delicately juicy, grapefruit aromas. (I tasted AP number #15 14.)”RP

Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 2007 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, 2 magnums available
Stephen Tanzer 96 points “Golden yellow. Christmas fruitcake with cherry, white raisin and honeyed botrytis on the nose. Glossy, creamy and rich on the palate, with fine slate, brown spice and floral elements woven into a braid of flavors. The botrytis component adds complexity on the complex, mineral-driven finish. What an auslese!.” ST
Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 2011 375ML ($59.95) $46 special, 4 half-bottles available
Wine Advocate 95 points “A delightful hint of salted caramel creeps into the nose and onto the palate of Prum’s 2011 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese gold capsule, which when combined with apple jelly, honey and nougat not to mention a creamy and almost taffy-like texture, makes for a decidedly confectionary aura. Sweet liquid essences of lily, musky peony and gardenia as well as a faint oiliness and high glycerol enhance the luxuriantly seductive effect of this long-lingering performance, yet there remains a critical modicum of fresh apple and melon juiciness (if less efficacious than that of the corresponding Bernkasteler) to complement the sense of levity in this elixir’s finish and to render the next sip virtually irresistible.” WA

Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 2012 375ML ($69.95) $44 special, 9 half-bottles available
Wine Advocate 96+ points “More reductive on the nose than the Himmelreich Auslese Gold Capsule, the 2012 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule (AP #19 13) combines its deeper mineral character with a perfect expression of highly noble botrytis. The finish is piquant and firm and also more grippy and stringent due to the reductive style. The wine lacks the finesse and elegance of the Himmelreich at the moment, but is provided with the density and complexity for a long flight over the years.”RP

Wine Enthusiast 93 points “This Merlot-based blend is a huge success. It’s a big, tannic, tight wine, packed to bursting with black cherry liqueur, cola and spice flavors. Yet it maintains an exciting balance, with the tension between acids, tannins and oak in equilibrium. Seems like it wants 5-6 years in the cellar to let it throw some tannins and mellow.” WE

Wine Spectator 92 points “Creamy and inviting, with dark raspberry, blackberry coulis and steeped plum fruit gliding along, carried by licorice snap, Lapsang souchong tea and singed apple wood notes. Fleshy but well-defined, driven to the finish by embedded structure. Best from 2015 through 2025. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.” WS

Dark cherry, plum, spice and new leather all flesh out in a supple, inviting Bourgogne loaded with sheer appeal. There is a lot to like here, including a level of pure resonance that is rare at this level.” AG

Gerard Boulay Sancerre Chavignol 2012 375ML ($17.95) $14 special, 21 half-bottles available
John Gilman 91 points “Geìrard Boulay is clearly one of the finest vignerons in all of Sancerre these days, and I have the feeling that his also hailing from the village of Chavignol, which is already home to the Cotat cousins and the Vatan estate tends to steal a bit of his thunder. But, year in and year out, his lineup of stellar Sancerre bottlings are amongst the highlights of all the wines I taste for this annual report. His 2012 ‘regular’ bottling is excellent, offering up a pure and complex bouquet of gooseberry, tart orange, a bit of white pepper, a nice base of crystalline minerality, gentle notes of petrol and a very understated grassiness. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely structured, with a fine core of fruit, superb soil signature, a youthful personality and excellent cut and grip on the long, complex and classy finish. This is a superb young bottle of Sancerre. 2013- 2019.”

Franco Pacenti Canalicchio Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2010 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 31 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “Violet, rose, pressed powder, perfumed berry and forest floor are some of the aromas offered by this stunning wine. The palate is still tightly wound, but delivers juicy black cherry, white pepper and licorice alongside youthfully assertive but fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. Drink 2018–2030.” WE
Wine Advocate 93+ points “Initially subdued, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino reveals itself very slowly thanks to budding aromas of rose, cherry, licorice, tar and menthol herb. The Canalicchio vineyard sites (Sopra and Sotto) show fantastic results in this classic vintage. This wine opts for a less aggressive interpretation of the vintage with soft fruit, polished tannins and mild intensity. It is Brunello at 70% horsepower. That slower approach gives you more time to appreciate the delicate tones of brimstone and balsam herb that carefully rise from the bouquet. It would be interesting to see where this wine goes five years from now. My guess it that it will grow in intensity.” ML

Josh Raynolds–Vinous 90 points “(70% tempranillo, 20% graciano and 10% garnacha; aged for two years in French and American oak): Brilliant red. Pungent aromas of ripe red fruit, vanilla and coconut, with a note of cedary oak that gains strength with air. Fresh and lively, with intense raspberry and cherry-vanilla flavors and a zesty cracked pepper note adding lift and cut. Juicy, appealingly sweet and broad, with good energy and mineral bite to its gently tannic finish.” JR
