The single-vineyard Brunello to treasure!
Case-6 Altesino Montosoli, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2010 750ML ($899.95) $679 pre-arrival special (that’s only $113.17/bottle!)
Wine Spectator 98 points “A stunning red, featuring peony, strawberry, cherry and mineral flavors, accented by notes of wild herbs. Intense and deep, with great purity and elegance, a firmly wrought structure and a long finish. The harmony between fruit, tannins and acidity should allow this to age beautifully. Best from 2019 through 2036.” WS
James Suckling 97 points “Beautiful aromas of dark fruits and minerals. Full-bodied, succulent and chewy. It’s tight and stony. Lots of black olives and wet earth under the fruit. Bright and linear wine with beautiful layers…” JS
Wine Advocate 96 points “Montosoli enthusiasts will not be disappointed by the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli. This special single-vineyard expression shows a beautifully fragrant and floral bouquet that is exactly in line with what this firmly consistent producer strives to achieve. This wine represents one of the most distinctive expressions of varietal voice and that’s what makes it so precious and rare. Sangiovese sings loud with small berry nuances and loud floral impressions of rose, violet and lavender. Its underlying complexity is further enhanced by anise seed, cola and licorice stick. The wine’s texture is soothing soft and silky. This is one for your cellars to age ten years or more.”

Arriving Mid-July – Subscriber Special Pricing

Ulysses Vineyard, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($189.95) Displayed price: $159, Your price: $139 pre-arrival special, ETA Mid-July
James Suckling 98 points “Fabulous subtle aromas of black currants, violets and lilacs with a hot stone undertone. Full-bodied and dense, it shows such wonderful energy and synergy that delivers a firm yet gentle tannin backbone and complex mouthfeel that seduces you. Evolves wonderfully. Second wine from this new estate, which is owned by Christian Moueix of Dominus and Bordeaux.”
Robert Parker 96 points “The 2013 Ulysses is absolutely mind-boggling, as so many wines from this vintage are. Gorgeous blueberry and blackberry fruit, along with the telltale cassis and floral notes, jump from the glass. Again, this is Pauillac-like, with some cedar wood and subtle barrique smells. Again produced nearly all from Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine is full-bodied, powerful, rich and long, with slightly sweeter tannins than the 2012. Production in 2013 was 960 cases, and Moueix told me that the entire growing season averaged about two and half weeks ahead of schedule from bloom break to harvest. This is a prodigious effort and will certainly stand as the great Ulysses of the first trio to be released. I suspect it will be drinkable in 3-4 years and keep for 30 or more, given the Moueix track record.”
Antonio Galloni 95+ points “Gravel, smoke, graphite, savory herbs, tobacco and iron are some of the signatures in the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon. A typical wine from the eastern sector of Oakville on the border with Yountville, the 2013 is loaded with feral, savory notes, while the expression of blue/blackish fruit lies a bit more in the background. In 2013, the main signature is an expression of structure that is both vertical but also incredibly insistent through to the finish. In other words, this is a super-classic 2013 built for the cellar.”

Ulysses Vineyard, Napa Valley 2014 750ML ($199.95) $169 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 98 points “The evolution of this wine has been phenomenal since I tasted it in barrel a year ago with the same black cherry, plum and citrus character but with a turn to orange leaf, dark Chinese tea, and mushroom. Full body, fine and velvety tannins with a touch of dust to the texture. So much chocolate and fruit undertones with forest floor and hints of tobacco, too. The mouthfeel and complexity are seductive. Better from 2022 but a joy to taste.”
Robert Parker 94 points “The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, which was aged for 17 months in 45% new French oak, is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is dense purple, with sweet cedar wood, unsmoked cigar tobacco, crème de cassis, and black raspberries in a classic, almost St.-Julien/Pauillac style. This emerged from a valley floor vineyard on the west side of Napa, where Christian Moueix told me that 2014 was characterized by generally slightly higher than average temperatures for the summer with only minor heat spikes in June and July. August and September went off without a hitch, and the harvest took place during the month of September. This full-bodied wine will hit its peak in 3-5 years and last for 25-30.”

Chateau de Calavon Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence Rose, Provence 2017 750ML ($21.95) $18 special
Case-12 Chateau de Calavon Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence Rose, Provence 2017 750ML ($249.95) $179 special (that’s only $14.92/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 90 points “A blend of 65% Cinsault, 20% Grenache and 15% Syrah, Calavon’s 2017 Coteaux d’Aix en Provence Rose is another solid rosé effort from the portfolio of American importer Peter Weygandt. This one is medium-bodied, quite taut and perfumed, with hints of garrigue, stone fruit and lingering citrus on the finish.”
The next best price is $21.99
Peyrassol Commanderie de Peyrassol Cotes de Provence Rose, Provence 2017 1.5L ($61.95) $49 special
Wine Advocate 90-92 points “Potentially one of the top rosés of the vintage, the 2017 Cotes de Provence Rose Cuvee de la Commanderie was still on the lees when I tasted it at the beginning of March 2018. A blend of 45% Cinsault, 29% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 6% Rolle and 5% Mourvèdre, it’s spicy and complex, with more weight and texture than most. Concentrated cinnamon, allspice and clove notes linger on the finish, more savory than fruity.”
Domaine Saint Damien Gigondas Rose, Rhone 2017 750ML ($27.95) $24 special
Wine Advocate 90 points “Mainly Cinsault (70%) from 80-year-old vines (the balance is split between Grenache and Mourvèdre), the 2017 Gigondas Rose is a medium-bodied wine that captures much of that variety’s elusive fruit and spice character. Hints of melon and redcurrant pick up notes of dried, savory spice on the finish.”
Domaine Les Aphillanthes Cote du Rhone Rose, Rhone 2017 750ML ($17.95) $14 special
Case-12 Domaine Les Aphillanthes Cote du Rhone Rose, Rhone 2017 750ML ($189.95) $138 special (that’s only $11.50/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 89 points “Crushed stone, cinnamon-allspice and subtle peach-like notes appear on the nose of the 2017 Cotes du Rhone Rose, a blend of 50% Cinsault, 35% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% Counoise. It’s light to medium-bodied, quite a feat, considering the winery is in Plan de Dieu, a fairly hot portion of the Côtes du Rhône. Peach, melon and citrus notes linger on the finish.”
Arriving in July:
Domaine de la Bastide Blanche Bandol Rose, Provence 2017 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Domaine de la Bastide Blanche Bandol Rose, Provence 2017 750ML ($299.95) $238 pre-arrival special (that’s only $19.83/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 92 points “This American version of La Bastide Blanche’s 2017 Bandol Rose is 71% Mourvèdre, considerably higher than what you’ll find on the market elsewhere. It’s slightly austere in its youth, with crushed stone framing delicate fruit notes of melon and peach, retaining a laser-like focus across the medium-bodied palate and through the lingering finish.”
Domaine Lafond Tavel Roc-Epine Rose, Rhone 2017 750ML ($21.95) $18 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Domaine Lafond Tavel Roc-Epine Rose, Rhone 2017 750ML ($249.95) $189 pre-arrival special (that’s only $15.75/bottle and the lowest listed price in the USA today!)
Wine Advocate 93 points “A dependable producer of Tavel and Lirac (and Châteauneuf-du-Pape), the Lafonds have turned out a spice-driven 2017 Tavel that’s bottled under screwcap. Hints of allspice and clove accent watermelon and red berry flavors, while the palate is medium to full-bodied and richly textured, leading into a long, silky finish. Bravo!”
Angela Estate Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton District 2013 750ML ($49.95) $24 special
Case-6 Angela Estate Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton District 2013 750ML ($259.95) $131.90 special (that’s only $21.98/bottle!)
Wine Enthusiast 92 points –Cellar Selection-– “…Estate grown. This is a tight, focused, young red wine, with tangy raspberry fruit that touches on black cherry. Vivid and penetrating, it needs plenty of time to breathe, and as it does it reveals subtle layers of mocha and caramel. This has the bones to age. Drink now through 2030.”

Forman Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2014 750ML ($119.95) Was $99, Now $89 Clearance Price, 36+ bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 95+ points “A weightless, translucent wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon exudes class. Vibrant and finely sculpted, the 2014 possesses striking nuance from start to finish. Scents of lavender, rose petal, mint and sweet spice notes give the 2014 its brightness and sense of energy. Today, the 2014 is a bit compact relative to how it showed from barrel. I expect the wine will put on a bit more weight during its aging. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2014 at least a few years. Even today, though, the 2014 is a very pretty and pure wine.”

(The 2014 scored 97 points from Antonio Galloni)
Ken’s Wine Guide 96 points “This dark red colored Cabernet Sauvignon from Diamond Creek is Excellent! It opens with a cassis and black cherry bouquet. On the palate, this wine is medium to full bodied, balanced and super smooth. The flavor profile is a tasty cassis and minerality blend with notes of mild oak. I also detected hints of blueberry and green olive. The finish is dry and its well-managed tannins drift away so nicely. This Cab would be a perfect pairing with a filet mignon. Enjoy – Ken”
Winery notes: “Volcanic Hill is comprised of 8 acres of south facing hillside vineyard. It is the warmest of all our micro-climates. The color of the soil is gray, and the consistency is that of fluffy, volcanic ash, originally deposited from the eruption of Mt. Konocti 8 million years ago. Volcanic Hill is the longest lived of our wines. Our winemaker describes these wines as “full bodied, loaded with intense ripe berry fruit, cassis, violets and a smoky richness, finishing with good length and firm tannins. The Volcanic Hill bottling includes a small amount of the extra-ordinary Petit Verdot grape.”

Xavier Vignon Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Reserve VII IX X NV 750ML ($69.95) Was $59, Now $49 Clearance Price
Wine Advocate 96 points “While I reviewed this NV Châteauneuf du Pape La Reserve VII IX X (a blend from the 2007, 2009 and 2010 vintages) last year, I was able to taste it again this go around, and it still blew me away. Fabulously full-bodied and decadent, with loads of lavender, incense, black raspberry and cured-meat nuances, it’s still youthful and vibrant, with notable freshness and purity. Enjoy this brilliant wine through 2028.”

Peter Lauer Fass 8 Ayler Kupp Kabinett, Mosel 2014 750ML ($37.95) Was $31.90, Now $26 Clearance Price
John Gilman 91-92 points ‘The 2014 Ayler Kupp Kabinett from Florian Lauer is really a lovely and quite classic example of this Prädikat, with lovely acidity and minerality providing a fine filigree to the wine and a nice sense of reserve out of the blocks as well. The very classy nose wafts from the glass in a mix of green apple, tart orange, slate, lovely smokiness and a touch of dried flowers in the upper register. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, pure and focused, with a good core, bright acids, a nice touch of sweetness on the attack and lovely length and grip on the elegant and nascently complex finish. This is quite approachable now, but still a touch primary, and I would be inclined to give it at least a few years in the cellar to develop its secondary layers of complexity. 2019-2035+.” JG

New Weekend – New Arrivals
Bergstrom ‘Old Stones’ Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2015 750ML ($37.95) $33 special
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2015 Chardonnay Old Stones has notes of apricots, guava, pineapple and marzipan with hints of cedar, yuzu and struck flint. Medium-bodied with wonderful intensity and depth, it has fantastic citrus and stone fruit layers interspersed with savory/toasty/mineral elements, finishing long.”
Josh Raynolds 92 points “Limpid yellow. Vibrant, mineral-tinted citrus and orchard fruit aromas are complemented by suggestions of fennel, iodine and toasted brioche. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering concentrated pear, tangerine and sweet butter flavors that pick up a smoky mineral flourish with air. Densely packed yet lithe, delivering strong closing thrust and lingering honeysuckle and bitter pear skin notes.”
Patricia Green Cellars Freedom Hill Vineyard Dijon 115 Clone Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2015 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 special
Josh Raynolds 94 points “Deep bright-rimmed red. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes an array of red fruit and floral scents, along with exotic spice and smoky mineral notes. Silky, concentrated and precise on the palate, offering intense raspberry, rose pastille and spicecake flavors that deepen steadily with air. There’s an impressive blend of depth and tension here. Finishes extremely long and pure, featuring echoing red fruit and floral character and smooth tannins that come in late. If the Freedom Hill Pommard Clone bottling could pass for a New World Richebourg, then this wine shares the traits of Romanée-Saint-Vivant.”
Jim Prosser crafts Pinot of restraint and complexity, even in warm vintages.
J.K. Carriere Vespidae Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2014 375ML ($24.95) $20.90 special
Josh Raynolds 92 points “Bright red. Spice-tinged black raspberry and cherry cola aromas are complicated by violet, musky herb and allspice accents. Sweet and chewy on the palate, offering densely packed red and dark berry flavors along with suggestions of licorice and bitter chocolate. Closes with solid dark fruit punch, mounting tannins and strong, spicy tenacity.”
Cappellano Barolo Chinato, Piedmont NV 750ML ($79.95) $69 special
Antonio Galloni 93 points “Cappellano’s Barolo Chinato, which is more on the savory side of things, is a personal favorite.”
Importer note “Giovanni [grandfather to the current owner]’s brother, Giuseppe, was a pharmacist who created the family formula for their famous (then and again now) Barolo Chinato, the Barolo infused with a variety of “medicines”. The Barolo Chinato is produced by following the family recipe handed down generation to generation. The “medicinal” herbs and spices are ground using a stone mortar and pestle. Both the recipe and the process are family secrets.”

All Arriving Wednesday:
Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier Clos de la Marechale, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2015 750ML ($179.95) $149 pre-arrival special
Stephen Tanzer 92 points “Bright, dark red. Aromas of blackberry, chocolate and licorice show the ripe side of the vintage but with plenty of lift. Then surprisingly tight in the mouth, with black raspberry and dark chocolate flavors complicated by savory earth and mineral tones. This seriously structured wine finishes with very fine-grained tannins.”
Burghound 92 points “Outstanding. This is also agreeably fresh and particularly so for the vintage while displaying much more earth character on the pretty mix of red and dark berries, especially cherry. There is a lovely texture to the sappy, delicious and succulent flavors that possess a fleshy mouthfeel, all wrapped in a lingering if slightly warm finale. This excellent effort should also age effortlessly yet there is so much mid-palate sap that it will be approachable young.”
50 year old tawny port. Perfect for reminding someone how old they’ve gotten.
Taylor Fladgate Very Old Single Harvest Port 1968 750ML ($299.95) $219 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 98 points “Pretty gorgeous from the get go, with toasted sesame, green tea, walnut husk, pistachio cream and peanut toffee notes seamlessly layered atop each other, framed by a subtle singed alder hint. Everything glides with grace through the finish, like a gently wafting plume of white smoke off of burning incense. Drink now.”
Argiano continues to be very undervalued. Powerful, explosive Brunello.
Argiano Brunello di Montalcino DOCG,Tuscany 2013 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 96 points “Fantastic aromas of orange peel and dark berry with plenty of plum and cherry. Sweet tobacco and mushrooms. Full body, juicy and fruity with firm tannins and a fresh finish. Complex and gorgeous. Fine and very long. Drink now.”
A truly unique and special wine, this is incredibly hard to source and the ’13 is a classic.
Castellare di Castellina ‘I Sodi di San Niccolo’ Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2013 750ML ($89.95) $66 pre-arrival special
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 points “The 2013 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is 85% Sangioveto (a more antique name for Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera from a single vineyard. This wine opens to a darkly saturated appearance and shows ruby, garnet and purple highlights. The bouquet is powerful but seamless at the same time with smooth transitions between dark cherry, spice, tobacco and moist clay. In the mouth, this wine shows dense extraction, but it never feels too weighed down by that mass. Instead, the freshness of the fruit and the natural acidity give the wine a bright and buoyant personality. Aged in barrique for 30 months, this is a delightful Tuscan red.”
Mature, back vintage Chateauneuf? Yes, please.
Roger Sabon Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Prestige, Rhone 2001 750ML ($99.95) $79 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 94 points “Mature spice, black tea and sandalwood notes lead the way, but this has deceptive richness despite its softening feel, with layered flavors of roasted fig, plum confiture and cherry compote gliding along. The structure has melded into the core and the finish is supple.”
Chateau Leoville Poyferre, Saint-Julien 2010 750ML ($199.95) $179 pre-arrival special
Jeb Dunnuck 99 points “Another massive, incredible release from this estate is the 2010 Léoville Poyferré. Based on 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and the balance Petit Verdot, its inky purple color is followed by a massive, full-bodied, incredibly concentrated 2010 that has awesome notes of pure crème de cassis, licorice, graphite, and spring flowers. As with the 2009, it has incredible depth of fruit, yet a slightly more focused, classic style, which is very much in the style of the 2010 vintage. With its new oak completely absorbed by its wealth of fruit, perfect balance, and sweet tannin, it’s a sensational, monumental effort to drink over the coming 3-4 decades.”
Robert Parker 98+ points “The wine out distances both Leoville Las Cases and Leoville Barton, but all three of them are compelling efforts. Full-bodied, dense purple in color, with floral notes intermixed with blackberries, cassis, graphite and spring flowers, this full-bodied, legendary effort is long and opulent, with wonderfully abundant yet sweet tannin, a skyscraper-like mid-palate and a thrilling, nearly one-minute finish. This spectacular effort from Poyferre that should drink well for 30+ years.”
Mazzei continues their run of impressive success with their Concerto super-Tuscan.
Mazzei Castello di Fonterutoli Concerto Rosso Vino da Tavola 2015 750ML ($89.95) $79 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 96 points “This is fabulous with blackberry, blueberry and currant aromas. Some slate. Full body, dense and smooth with firm and silky tannins and intense fruit. This is a classic sangiovese and cabernet sauvignon blend. Don’t miss it. Needs three or four years to completely come together.”
The Best Vintage Yet
For This Star of Nuits
Jerome Chezeaux makes wines that epitomize our favorite sort of Burgundy. Ageworthy, fine and built on a core of minerality, but priced a tier below what the wines deliver. Make no mistake about it—Chezeaux makes wines that can be poured with the finest producers in Nuits, but cost 25% less. In a vintage like 2015 he really shines, as the warm year buttresses his mineral style with a bit broader shoulders and more fruit. The trio of premier cru Nuits-St. George are of particular note—they’re incredible values and are only slightly more expensive than some producer’s village bottlings.
Jerome Chezeaux Wines Arriving Friday, June 29th:
Jerome Chezeaux Bourgogne Rouge, Burgundy 2015 750ML ($34.95) $28 pre-arrival special
Importer note “Chezeaux’s exemplary Bourgogne Rouge comes from a smattering of parcels in Premeaux-Prissey and Nuits-Saint-Georges encompassing 2.8 hectares in total. A wonderful representative of both Jerome’s style and the classic character of Nuits-Saint-Georges and environs, it emphasizes fresh, lively fruit buttressed by firm minerality, all on a racy, energetic frame. This is a sleek, articulate Bourgogne Rouge unencumbered by oak influence, as Chezeaux employs no new barrels in its elevage.”
Jerome Chezeaux Vosne-Romanee, Cote de Nuits 2015 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Importer note “Jerome owns a half-hectare’s worth of villages-level Vosne-Romanee, spread among three lieux-dits: “Aux Reas,” “Bossieres,” and “Meziere.” His remarkably deft, light touch allows that classic Vosne-Romanee spice and silkiness to shine through brilliantly, its dark, regal, seductive fruit contrasting the gutsier, more forcefully mineral carriage of its Nuits-Saint-Georges brethren.”
Jerome Chezeaux Aux Boudots, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2015 750ML ($89.95) $75 pre-arrival special
Importer note “Always a favorite in Chezeaux’s cellar, “Aux Boudots” is perched at the northern limit of Nuits-Saint-Georges, on the border of Vosne-Romanee. As one might expect given its location, this wine combines classically Nuits-Saint-Georges iron and sous-bois with fruit a bit more caressing and Vosne-Romanee-like than its more southerly situated counterparts. Chezeaux owns a very small 0.34-hectare parcel in this steeply sloping premier cru.”
Jerome Chezeaux Rue de Chaux, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2015 750ML ($79.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Importer note “Located almost dead-center in the appellation, “Rue de Chaux” is perhaps the most quintessentially Nuits-Saint-Georges among Chezeaux’s premier crus. Jerome owns a mere 0.29 hectares in this steep, topsoil-deficient vineyard, and his unfailingly elegant touch yields a wine of both grace and power. Darkly fruited, dense, and ever-so-slightly brooding, Chezeaux’s “Rue de Chaux” also offers a beguiling perfume and assertive savory-spice elements.”
Jerome Chezeaux Les Vaucrains, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2015 750ML ($79.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Importer note “Nuits-Saint-Georges famously possesses no grand cru vineyards, but “Les Vaucrains” is widely considered one in all but name. Always the most complete of Chezeaux’s premier crus, “Vaucrains” bristles with tension—an authoritative wine that exudes an impression of depth and solidity. Here, the fruit, mineral, and savory elements bind together more tightly, more seamlessly. Jerome owns just over a quarter of a hectare of east-facing vines in “Vaucrains,” and his conservative oak regimen—never more than one-third of the barrels are new—allows one to admire the power of the terroir with great clarity.”
Christophe Mignon & Marguet Champagnes
We’re pleased to feature two up and coming grower Champagne producers, working biodynamically, that arrive in the next two weeks. Both Mignon and Marguet are some of the most fascinating winemakers in Champange and their current releases look to be stunners from top to bottom.
“Mignon’s champagnes certainly reflect an emphasis on viticulture, showing a rich, ripe depth of fruit as well as a pronounced and complex mineral signature. As befits the soils in this area, the wines are more earthy and stony than overtly chalky, yet this doesn’t make them any less terroir-expressive, and a hallmark of Christophe Mignon’s champagnes is their intense articulation of place.
“This can be observed in Mignon’s Brut Nature, a pure meunier that is typically made from two different vintages, blended in equal proportions. A model of balance, its ripe fruit allows it to feel expressive in the absence of dosage, bringing minerality to the foreground while keeping acidity in check. Mignon also releases this blend as an Extra Brut, dosed with a liqueur of organic cane sugar, and in some years, this can be even more complex and complete than the Brut Nature. The same blend is used as the base for Mignon’s pungent, vinous Brut Rosé, where it’s combined with a relatively high percentage of red wine, made from meunier that’s vinified in barrel” – Peter Liem
“(Quiet) and soft-spoken, Christophe Mignon is a man of deeply held convictions. A visit to this tiny estate opens a window into Mignon’s deeply personal approach to farming and making wine that comes through in Champagnes of rarified distinction and personality. Biodynamic farming and stripped down winemaking inform the essence of Mignon’s approach.” — Antonio Galloni, December 2017
Christophe Mignon Brut Rose Pur Meunier, Champagne NV (13/14) 750ML ($69.95) $53.50 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 90 points “[Review is for Feb 2017 disgorgement] The Brut Rosé Pur Meunier is a rosé done with a blend of mostly Meunier vinified in white, off the skins, with the addition of still red Meunier for color and texture. Bright, red-tone fruit, tobacco and dried flowers give the wine striking aromatic depth to play off and contrast the fruit. The 6 grams of dosage feels just a touch sweet for this wine. Otherwise, the Pur Meunier is very nicely done. The current release is a blend of equal parts 2014 and 2013.”
Peter Liem note “*(*) Based on Mignon’s non-vintage Brut Nature, this is blended with 15 to 20 percent of red wine from Le Breuil, which gives it a deep crimson color. Like the Brut Nature, this is exuberant and bold, yet the addition of red wine makes it even more vinous and intense, without really increasing the wine’s weight or body. It’s silky in texture and elegant in build, with a delicious pungency of fruit that simply makes you want to drink more. Last tasted: 2/18.”

Antonio Galloni 93 points “The NV Brut Nature Blanc de Noirs Pur Meunier is a fabulous wine that captures the essence of Christophe Mignon’s style. Rich and resonant on the palate, the Pur Meunier exudes creaminess. This is an especially weighty expression of Meunier, and yet all the elements are very nicely balanced. Red fruit, dried pear, smoke, menthol and hazelnut notes slowly open up in the glass adding further shades of nuance. Expressive mineral notes extend the finish while providing an attractive counterpoint to the dense, pliant fruit. The current release is a blend of equal parts 2014 and 2013. Mignon’s Pur Meunier is one of the most distinctive wines being made in Champagne today. Don’t miss it. Disgorged: March 2017 and bottled with no dosage.”
Peter Liem note “*(*) Made of 100-percent meunier, this is equal parts 2014 and 2013, from vineyards in both Festigny and Le Breuil. It’s generous and bold, its flavors of red fruit and stone fruit underlined by hints of cassia and clove, and it’s terrifically harmonious as a non-dosé, particularly almost a year after its disgorgement in March of 2017. It finishes with long, energetic aromas, feeling dark in tone and sleek in build. Last tasted: 2/18″

“Like the man himself, Marguet’s wines are outgoing, friendly and forthright, yet they conceal a depth and expression that is clearly the product of careful thought and insightful vision. They typically have an unusual intensity of flavor and a finely tuned balance, and with their delicious concentration of fruit and clearly articulated soil signatures, they readily invite you to drink more. With his conscientious and ever-inquisitive methodology in both the vineyards and the cellars, Marguet is on his way to becoming one of the finest producers in the Montagne de Reims…
“In the cellar, all of the wines are fermented in oak barrels, which Marguet prefers for the additional complexity that barrel-fermentation brings, but also because using wood makes him feel closer to nature than working with the cold impersonality of steel tanks does. His wines always go through malolactic (“If you’re stopping the malo, you’re interfering with the wine’s evolution,” he says), and all of his cellar work is done with respect to the lunar calendar, including racking, bottling and disgorgement. He is also gradually working more and more without sulfur, as he believes that sulfites are indigestible and that they impart an adverse energy to the wine—in the 2012 harvest, for example, 80 percent of the production was vinified sans soufre” – Peter Liem

Marguet Pere & Fils ‘Shaman’ Grand Cru Extra Brut, Champagne NV (2014) 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Peter Liem “As of 2015, the non-vintage brut became a cuvée of roughly two-thirds pinot noir and one-third chardonnay, called Elements: the base year is included in the title, so the inaugural release was called Elements 10 and the follow-up Elements 11 (the first to be certified organic). To complicate things, though, it turned out that the name Elements is trademarked in the United States by Codorníu Napa, who uses it for California red wines under their Artesa label. Thus, Marguet was forced to change his cuvée name again, and the 2012-based release is called Shaman 12, with a rosé version created as well.”

Marguet Pere & Fils ‘Sapience’ Premier Cru Extra-Brut, Champagne 2009 750ML ($219.95) $189 pre-arrival special
Peter Liem “Since 2006, Marguet has been working with Hervé Jestin, the former chef de cave of Duval-Leroy who is now a consultant to many wine estates around Europe. Marguet has gradually integrated Jestin’s homeopathic and biodynamic practices into his own winemaking, and the two of them have collaborated to create a special, naturally grown champagne that encapsulates and expresses Jestin’s philosophies. The first vintage of this super-cuvée was 2006, released in 2013, and the production was divided: half of it was sold under the Jestin label, with the other half under the label Sapience, which Marguet has indicated is a separate brand from the Marguet label.”
From the Northern Rhone
Arriving in September
Domaine Jamet Condrieu ‘Vernillon’, Rhone 2015 750ML ($179.95) $149 pre-arrival special
Josh Raynolds 93 points “(sourced from a site in the Côte Chatillon) Light green-tinged yellow. High-pitched, mineral-accented orange zest, melon and violet aromas show impressive clarity and vivacity. Silky and sharply focused on entry, then more fleshy in the midpalate, offering vivid citrus fruit and honeydew flavors complemented by a subtle chamomile quality. Finishes with emphatic mineral cut and solid thrust, eventually leaving a suave floral note behind.”
Jeb Dunnuck 92 points “The 2015 Condrieu Vernillon is a bigger, richer wine that gives up lots of tropical, exotic fruits, flowers, and honeyed tangerine in its full-bodied, rich, yet balanced profile.”
Domaine Jamet Cote Rotie, Rhone 2013 750ML ($179.95) $149 pre-arrival special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 94 points “Inky ruby. A vibrant spice- and mineral-accented bouquet evokes ripe black raspberry and blueberry, candied flowers, incense and peppery spices. Sweet, palate-staining red and blue fruit compote and violet pastille flavors are complicated by notes of cracked pepper and bitter chocolate, with a spicecake nuance gaining strength in the glass. Velvety, pliant tannins add gentle grip to a strikingly long and incisive finish that strongly repeats the floral and mineral notes.” JR
Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas, Rhone 2008 750ML ($219.95) $179 pre-arrival special
Josh Raynolds 92 points “Deep ruby. A complex bouquet offers raspberry, cherry pit, violet and spice cake, with an intense mineral quality. Deeper, darker fruits on the palate, along with suggestions of allspice and licorice pastille. Shows fine-grained tannins and tangy mineral spine, with a suave blend of richness and vivacity. The very persistent finish is taut and focused, with lingering licorice and spice nuances.”
Wine Advocate 97 points “Almost as good, yet in a completely different style, the 2009 Cornas is about as sexy and voluptuous as Cornas gets! Loaded with kirsch, licorice, dried flowers and smoked meat-like aromas and flavors, this awesome 2009 has thrilling concentration, full-bodied richness and knockout length. It has the fruit to impress today, but needs 3-4 years of bottle age and will have over two decades of longevity.”
Josh Raynolds 95 points “Opaque violet color. The nose offers a kaleidoscopic bouquet of red and dark berry scents along with incense, candied violet, licorice and smoky minerals. Pretty much a distillation of syrah, showing superb clarity and intensity on the palate, with excellent depth and clarity to the sweet black raspberry and floral pastille flavors. The mineral quality builds with air and adds focus and cut to the long, spicy, strikingly pure finish. This is one of the best wines I tasted from the northern Rhone this vintage and appears to be destined for a very long life.”
