Domaine Arnaud Lambert
While soft-spoken and humble, Arnaud Lambert is helping to drive a revolutionary movement in the appellations of Saumur and Saumur-Champigny. The goal is to re-discover each individual terroir and its potential through organic viticulture and less-is-more, precise winemaking. Arnaud strives for consistent methods in the cellar, so that the terroir of each of his five crus is what shines through.Arnaud Lambert Clos De Midi Saumur Blanc 2021 750ml $21.90 special, 24 bottles availableImporter’s Note “From sandy clay soils mixed with Turonian limestone. Utilizes indigenous yeasts, fermented half in stainless steel tanks and half in old Burgundian barrels.” Arnaud Lambert Château De Breze Clos Tue-Loup Rouge 2019 750ml $28 special, 11 bottles availableImporter’s note “100% de-stemmed cab franc fermented in a combination of 2 to 3-year-old barrels and raw concrete tanks for 8 months with 6 months in stainless steel tanks and then 6-12 months in bottle.” Clos D’audhuy Les Polissons Cahors Malbec 2020 750ml $19 special, 24 bottles availableVinoplnote “A light and fresh interpretation of Malbec, this wine sees no oak, only stainless steel.”

Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico 2021 750ml $24 special, 36+ bottles in stock No reviews for the 2021 vintage. 2020 review provided for reference: Wine Spectator 92 Points “A bright, succulent style, this exudes cherry, strawberry, earth and tobacco aromas and flavors, with spicy character. Shows vibrant structure and balance, with a lingering finish. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2023 through 2030. 14,000 cases imported.” Antinori Tignanello Toscana 2019 750ml $149 special, 12 bottles available#5 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2022Wine Spectator 96 Points “A supple, elegant red highlighted by bright cherry, black currant, violet, tobacco, iron and oak spice aromas and flavors. Though fluid and seemingly approachable now, this is well-structured and shows the balance to age. Fine length. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.” Wine Advocate 96 Points “The Marchesi Antinori 2019 Tignanello was born in a classic growing season that saw some cooling summer rains and relatively stress-free conditions. This is an elegant and extremely polished wine made with mostly Sangiovese and smaller parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Here too, the small blending element of Cabernet Franc has been slowly increasing in recent years. The 2019 vintage was born with a good amount of power and tannic structure, and maceration times were slightly reduced as a result. This less extractive approach shapes a polished and elegant wine with plenty of bright berry fruit, cherry, dried mint, blue flower, blood orange and rusty earth. The palate is more compact and streamlined. It shows beautiful grace.” Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2019 750ml $249 special, 10 bottles availableVinous 97 Points “The 2019 Le Pergole Torte is all class and refinement. At the same time, the 2019 is quite reticent at this stage. In this tasting, the Pergole Torte comes across as more refined and aromatically expressive than the Montevertine, with lovely brightness driving the red berry fruit. Elegant and sophisticated, the 2019 is a wine to treasure for the next several decades. Time in the glass brings out the floral upper register and red Sangiovese fruit of Pergole Torte.” Wine Advocate 97 Points “Holding back initially, this wine simply needs more time in bottle, and I have adjusted the drinking window accordingly. The 2019 Le Pergole Torte is a long-term proposition showing initial stirrings of tart cherry fruit, plum, licorice, tobacco and crushed stone. There is a pretty floral tone of violet or rosemary flower even now. Winemaking takes this special selection of 100% Sangiovese though cement and Allier and Slavonian oak. The balanced acidity stands out nicely. There are 29,000 bottles of the 2019 vintage, and I recommend you put yours in the cellar for five to 10 more years.”

Bodegas Breca Old Vine Garnacha Calatayud 2019 750ml $16 special, 36+ bottles availableBodegas Breca Old Vine Garnacha Calatuyad 2019 12 bottle case $179 special, that’s $14.91 per bottleJeb Dunnuck 93 Points “I loved the nose on the 2019 Breca, which is loaded with spicy red and black fruits as well as notes of sandalwood, dried flowers, herbes de Provence, and some chalky, mineral-like nuances. Beautiful on the palate as well, this medium to full-bodied, elegant, balanced, straight-up gorgeous Garnacha is best drunk over the coming 3-5 years.”
Staff Picks
The co-fermentation of grapes from three distinct parcels of gravel, flint, and heavy clay soil makes this a lithe and complex sancerre. With notes of grass, pear, and quince on the palette and bolstered with chalky minerality and a long tart finish, this wine reminded me of why I love sancerre to begin with. Huet Moelleux Haut Lieu 2016 750ml $39 special, 36+ bottles availableWine Spectator 95 Points “Gorgeous crystallized ginger, dried quince, glazed pear and warm persimmon notes are seamlessly interwoven here, gliding through a lengthy finish that picks up a lilting green tea accent. Frankly off-dry but wonderfully pure. Drink now through 2035.” Huet Vouvray Moelleux Clos Bourg 1er Trie 2016 $59 special, 36+ bottles availableWine Spectator 96 Points “This is ripe and broad, taking a slightly more power-driven approach, with a mix of tropical mango and papaya fruit, backed by orchard fruit accents of yellow apple and peach. The long, heather honey–accented finish has light piecrust and crystalized ginger hints. Best from 2020 through 2035.” Wine Advocate 94 Points “Huet’s bright golden colored 2016 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Moelleux Première Trie is clear, fresh and intensely fruity on the remarkably precise nose. Medium-bodied yet concentrated, elegant and sweet on the palate, this is a salty, piquant, mineral Chenin Blanc with intense, elegant and well-structured fruit. The wine reveals a chalky finesse and long tensioned finish. Bottled with 84 grams of residual sugar, this is still a pretty sweet but doubtlessly promising Vouvray.” Huet Moelleux Le Mont 2016 750ml $49 special, 36+ bottles availableWine Spectator 96 Points “Bright, even exuberant in feel, with a parade of Jonagold apple, green melon, Bosc pear and quince flavors streaming through, gilded with heather, honeysuckle and verbena notes on the long, lithe finish. Remarkably elegant despite the off-dry style.” Huet Moelleux Le Mont Trie 2016 750ml $69 special, 36+ bottles availableWine Advocate 97 Points “The 2016 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux Première Trie opens with a very clear, deep and flinty/herbal bouquet of ripe concentrated stone fruits intermixed with chalky/smoky aromas, very complex and truly exciting! Light, fresh and tensioned on the palate, that is very pure and salty but also tight and concentrated. The 2016 Le Mont reveals crystalline acidity, delicate but serious tannin grip and a long, complex, stimulating finish. This is Chenin Blanc full of energy and aging potential, provided with concentration, lingering salinity and vibrancy. This is a fascinating Le Mont, surely the top wine of Huet’s excellent 2016 series. Bottled with 92 grams of residual sugar, it tastes less sweet than the corresponding Clos du Bourg.” Wine Spectator 96 Points “Juicy in feel, with an intense beam of glazed peach, dried apricot, fresh ginger and heather honey notes, backed by baked mirabelle plum accents and a flash of almond cream on the long, rich finish. A wonderful balancing act, keeping the exotic fruit and sweetness fresh and delineated..”

The palate boasts concentrated, fruity flavors balanced by zippy acidity, and it finishes with pretty orange peel accents. This is such a delicious rosé! It’s made up of co-fermented Grenache Gris, Grenache Noir and Syrah.” JC Somers Whole Lotta Rose 2021 750ml $19.90 special, 5 bottles availableWinery Note “The Whole Lotta Rose is blended mostly from Grenache and a little Syrah sourced from the Garnier Vineyard located on the Oregon side of the Columbia River near the town of Mosier. This rosé is a saignée of Trollinger, Portugieser, Zweigelt and Spätburgunder, all farmed biodynamically and fermented with native yeast.”

G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero 2018 750ml $399 special, 9 bottles availableWine Enthusiast 98 Points “This wine is just stunning, starting with aromas of fragrant blue flower, red berry, camphor, dark spice and underbrush. Reflecting the aromas, the smooth, delicious palate delivers raspberry compote, ripe cherry, and licorice accompanied by polished tannins while fresh acidity offers youthful tension.” Wine Advocate 96+ Points “Within the context of this set of new releases from Comm. G.B. Burlotto, this wine stands far apart. The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is linear and light, but it also shows good fruit weight … Spice, cola, licorice, grilled herb and dried cherry appear to lift over a fine and delicately tapered mouthfeel.” Dal Forno Romano Amarone 2015 750ml $399 special, 12 bottles availableJames Suckling 100 Points “This is black as pitch in the glass and, yes, there’s a light, tarry edge to the super-concentrated prune, date and currant fruit. But even more interesting are the complex notes of bitter-orange liqueur, aged balsamic, fresh roasting herbs, cinnamon, roasted chestnuts, black tea and licorice. The more you decant in advance, the more nuances will emerge. It’s full-boded with huge concentration and lots of chewy tannin that is managing to hold the fruit back for now. This needs plenty of time to develop in the bottle. Just superb. One of the greatest Dal Forno’s ever.” Wine Advocate 97 Points “The ultimate statement wine from northern Italy is the 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Monte Lodoletta. The Dal Forno family skipped over the 2014 vintage, and this sunny vintage is worth the wait. Monte Lodoletta is always incredibly high in terms of fruit weight and tannins, but this edition from 2015 appears more integrated in terms of concentration and softer in terms of structure; it’s not that the wine is more accessible. It will hold the line for years and decades to come and promises to age gracefully. This vintage is instead more fleshed out and open-knit. The bouquet peels back with thick layers of black fruit, spice, campfire embers and toasted coffee bean. It’s an expensive bottle for collectors, but you get lots of bang for your buck.” Casanova Di Neri Brunello Cerretalto 2012 750ml $399 special, 10 bottles available Wine Spectator 98 Points “Flavors of medicinal herbs, juniper, macerated cherry, plum, tobacco and spice are the hallmarks of this intense red, which is ripe and concentrated, yet sleek and focused. Spice notes chime in on the long, minerally and firmly tannic finish. Best from 2023 through 2040.” Wine Advocate 98 Points ” The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto offers a prolonged, flowing and carefully massaged drinking experience that drapes over the senses with some studied intensity and lots of intriguing complexity. This wine nails that perfect balance between power and elegance (that elusive exchange that so many winemakers hope to achieve) with effortless precision. Bold cherry fruit and spice are tightly woven together. In the mouth, the wine shows texture, depth and succulence. Generally speaking, this is not my favorite vintage in Montalcino, but this wine suddenly made me forget that thought.”
