Subscriber Special Blow Out!
Winemaker Eric Prissette started out in Bordeaux in the 90’s and then wandered over to Languedoc to see what the terroir and grapes could offer. Here he set out purposely to make “wines you can drink” with a purity of fruit. With the Villa Symposia he has certainly succeeded. The 2013 is mostly Syrah with a little Mourvedre, plenty of red fruit and a little spice, perfectly structured with a velvety and integrated texture. If you love a juicy Syrah, grab this one up at half the price of the typical Northern Rhone!

Belle Pente:
A Vertical from a Favorite Local Producer
Brian O’Donnell is one of the most important winemakers in the Willamette Valley. He planted the Belle Pente vineyard in the mid-90’s and has been one of the best producers ever since, harnessing the inherent power of his site while giving the wines elegance and grace. That set of traits, combined with a commitment to bottle-aging before release, has created a strong following in both Portland’s restaurant community and at-home drinkers.
The (organically farmed) estate vineyard is located in the heart of Yamhill-Carlton, and the AVA’s characteristic power and richness inform most of these wines (save the excellent, Dundee Hills based Murto Vineyard, a mainstay since ’97). Brian manages to ride the line between substantial Pinot and pretty elegance, making for wines that are thrilling to drink at all stages of their life. He’s also a master of richer, Alsatian inspired whites that have an equal track record of aging.
We offer a wide swath of the Belle Pente wines, including some cherished and rare older vintages. These are perfect for drinking today or an extend sleep in your cellar. Shop the entire collection on our web store or browse our offerings below!

Belle Pente Estate Reserve Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton District 2010 750ML ($59.95) $51.90 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Bright ruby-red. A highly complex bouquet displays sexy red berry preserve, incense and candied rose scents, along with suggestions of cola, mocha and allspice. Sappy, deeply concentrated cherry and raspberry flavors are lifted and braced by juicy acidity and show excellent clarity and thrust. Closes with palate-staining intensity and sweetness, leaving suave floral and Asian spice notes behind. Impressively balanced and fine-grained, with serious cellaring potential.” ST

Belle Pente Estate Reserve Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton District 2011 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 13 bottles in stock now
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Brilliant ruby-red. Smoke- and spice-accented aromas of blackberry, cherry-cola and fresh lavender, with a hint of spicecake in the background. Silky, seamless and expansive, displaying intense red and dark berry flavors and a hint of allspice. Puts on weigh with aeration while maintaining vivacity. The mineral and floral qualities build on the persistent finish, which is firmed by fine-grained, harmonious tannins.” ST
Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2011 Pinot Noir Estate Reserve is a vineyard parcel and barrel selection. It was picked October 27 at 22 Brix and 100% de-stemmed, undergoing 45% new French oak. It has quite a dense bouquet with plenty of raspberry and crushed strawberry fruit that is well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin. There is plenty of backbone here, but it is very focused and harmonious with superb tension on the finish. This is an excellent contribution to the vintage—one of the best of Belle Pente’s current releases and well worth hunting down.”

Belle Pente Estate Reserve Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton District 2012 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 94 points “Brilliant ruby-red. A heady, strikingly pure bouquet evokes ripe red and dark berries, potpourri and Asian spices, along with suggestions of sassafras, cola and smoky minerals. At once concentrated and lithe, conveying superb energy and focus to its juicy raspberry, cherry and spicecake flavors. A suave floral quality emerges with air, carrying through a very long, sweet, gently tannic finish that leaves sappy red berry and rose pastille notes behind. Is this the best bottling yet to emerge from this winery, which has firmly established itself as one of America’s finest sources of elegant Pinot Noir? One thing’s for sure, it’s an excellent value.”
Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Estate Reserve is a barrel selection from the Belle Pente Vineyard including the original planting from 1994 that tends to produce smaller berries. It has a deep bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and violet aromas that are nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation, a firm body that gently grips the mouth, touches of brown spice and clove surfacing towards the structured finish. Brian O’Donnell has crafted a Pinot Noir with structure and ambition. It should drink well for 12-15 years.”

Belle Pente Estate Reserve Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton District 2014 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 15 bottles in stock now
Josh Raynolds 95 points “Limpid ruby-red. Powerful blue fruit liqueur, violet pastille, incense and smoky mineral aromas, along with hints of cola and exotic spices. Appealingly sweet and expansive on the palate, offering densely packed black raspberry, boysenberry, mocha and floral pastille flavors and a strong spicecake note. Supple, well-knit tannins give shape to the intensely fruit-driven finish, which lingers with outstanding persistence and building sweetness.”
Winery note “This terrific young wine was a star of the show at the International Pinot Noir Celebration last summer, and is just reaching the beginning of what will surely be a long drinking window. True to its Yamhill-Carlton appellation, the wine shows concentrated, dark fruit flavors and aromas accented with notes of fresh herbs and flowers. It is one of those rare vintages that offers early appeal as well as the potential for 10-20 years in the cellar. So put a case (or two!) away and drink a bottle every year until it’s gone. You’ll be glad you did!”

Powerful smoke- and spice-accented red berry preserve and floral pastille scents show wonderful clarity, picking up notes of sassafras and cola with air. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering juicy black raspberry and cherry-cola flavors that show an alluring spiciness and a touch of candied rose. This weighty yet lithe wine finishes with excellent thrust and smooth, slowly building tannins. The 2011 rendition of this wine is very tightly wound right now and in need of at least another five years of cellaring, by the way.”

Shows very good breadth and seamless texture, finishing with impressive clarity, harmonious tannins and a lingering red fruit preserve quality.”
Belle Pente Belle Pente Vineyard Chardonnay, Yamhill-Carlton District 2016 750ML ($34.95) $29 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “This Chardonnay is 100% estate grown in a little 2 acre parcel planted in 1999 on a steep slope with rows running up & down the hill from north-east to south-west. This 2016 version continues a string of very compelling wines that started with the 2004 vintage, and bears witness to the recent rebirth of exciting Chardonnays coming out of the Willamette Valley. Like many of our neighbors, we are gravitating to 100% barrel fermentation, but with very modest use of new oak, typically in the 10-20% range. The wine spends a full year in barrel and often several months in tank before bottling, and is given at least a year in the bottle before release. We have always done two harvests for Chardonnay: an early pick for fresh, citrus qualities, and a later pick for riper, tropical characteristics. In this warm 2016 vintage, the blend includes 60% from the early pick and 40% from the later pick. Echoing past vintages, this combination yields a dual personality of freshness and richness.”

Belle Pente Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley 2015 750ML ($19.95) $16.60 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “We have always gravitated to a rich, ripe style of Pinot Gris inspired by the great wines of Alsace, and the warm 2015 growing season gave us exactly what we needed! Fans of innocuous, dilute, mass-produced Pinot Grigio may not find a lot to like in this wine. But if your reference point is a Grand Cru from Turckheim or Hunawihr, you’ve come to the right place!…The marine sedimentary soils of Yamhill-Carlton tend to impart a compelling savory saline quality and stony minerality to frame the apple and pear flavors and aromas of the Pinot gris grape. As per our normal protocol, roughly half of the wine is vinified and aged in wood (foudre & neutral barrel) and the other half in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation takes place slowly at cool temperatures and the wine is not bottled until right before the next harvest. It is then held for at least another year before release. The hybrid vinification, coupled with sur lie and bottle aging, creates a wine that has both richness and freshness. It is easy to enjoy on its own, and there is not a dish on the planet that it won’t compliment splendidly!”

Winery Note “This 2017 version of our ultimate “week-night wine” is a classic (and classy!) blend of 50% each Dundee Hills and Yamhill-Carlton fruit. For those of you with a Burgundian bent, that is like like having a “simple” Bourgogne Rouge with all the fruit sourced exclusively from vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertain and Vosne-Romanee!…As our first 2017 Pinot to be released, this wine provides an intriguing introduction to this terrific vintage. A Pinot with pedigree, the 2008 and 2013 renditions were the highest rated wines in the New York Times annual Oregon Pinot “round-up”, and the best values. Our Willamette Valley bottling has been regularly featured as a premium glass pour Pinot at great restaurants around the country. And it has been the “go to” Wednesday night wine for savvy Pinot-philes everywhere since it’s first release in the 1998 vintage.”

Belle Pente Cuvee Contraire Rose, Willamette Valley 2017 750ML ($21.95) $17 pre-arrival special, 12 bottles arriving Friday
Winery Note “We’ve been making this proprietary rose-style blend off-and-on since 2000, and this 2017 version honors our long-standing tradition of making something special out of odd lots and “left-overs” hanging around the winery. The inaugural release in 2000 included “orphan” lots of Pinot Blanc, white Pinot Noir, and Gamay blended together as a “marriage of convenience”, and became an instant hit. In 2017 we had a small lot of Gewurztraminer searching for a home, so we combined it with a few barrels of white Pinot Noir (captured as run-off from our processing line and barrel fermented as a white wine), and a splash of Pinot Gris. Since there is no Gamay in this year’s rendition, it is much lighter than previous vintages, and makes for a delicious summer sipper. 75% Pinot Noir, 13% Gewurztraminer, 12% Pinot Gris. Enjoy!”

Juicy and seamless in texture, offering penetrating raspberry, cherry liqueur and spicecake flavors that are highlighted by a zesty mineral note. Intensely flavored and sharply delineated, with an impressively long, perfumed finish that delivers firm mineral cut and resonating floral character.”

Yves Cuilleron:
Master of Elegance
Yves Cuilleron is a remarkable winemaker for many reasons. First is the sheer quality of his wines—they’re in the top tier of the Northern Rhone and combine an effortless classicism with an approachable personality. The second is the breadth of that quality—it’s hard to think of another winemaker whose wines are as good who makes wine from more than one or two AOC’s. Put that together and you have a one-man class on the terroir of the Northern Rhone.
While he’s best known for his Condrieu and Cote Rotie, he also makes a stunning set of wines from St. Joseph and St. Peray, as well as Cornas and Crozes-Hermitage. Unlike a large negociant, he owns his vines, most of them old massale selections that his family assembled through the three generations since the domaine was founded.
While he’s gained fame for his red wines, we think that he may be the best producer of elegant whites in the Northern Rhone, across a variety of appellations. His whites, from both Marsanne and Viognier (depending on the appellation) are less oaked and showy than the wines from Guigal or Chapoutier, for example, and show extremely precise flavors that work brilliantly at the table. This is a hard feat to pull off: they remind us of white Burgundy filtered through a Northern Rhone lens.

Clings with strong tenacity and spiciness on the finish, which is framed by smooth, building tannins.”

Cave Yves Cuilleron Condrieu Ayguets, Rhone 2016 500ML ($99.95) $69 special, 2 500ml-bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 95 points “This dessert-style version drips with frankly sweet nectarine, peach, mango and persimmon flavors that form the core, framed by a quince paste note and backed by a singed orange peel accent on the finish. Not shy on headiness. Drink now through 2022.”
Importer (Neal Rosenthal) Note “The Viognier for this cuvée is from terraced vineyards in Chavanay with a full south exposure. This site is ideal for providing an extended growing season that permits the development of botrytis and “surmaturité”. The harvest is done with several passes through the vineyards from mid-October through mid –November. The wine is fermented in barrel and the elevage in barrel as well extends for eight months. In general, the “Ayguets” is bottled at about 14% alcohol with 100 or more grams of residual sugar. Only about 2,000 bottles (of 500ml size) are bottled per year.”

Yves Cuilleron brings all of his white winemaking skill to bear on this bright, crisp rose. Made from Syrah, this nevertheless displays none of the grapes potential heaviness–it’s bright, fresh and slightly peppery on the finish.
Yves Cuilleron ‘Sybel’ Syrah Rose, IGP Collines Rhodaniennes 2018 750ML ($17.95) $14 special, 11 bottles in stock now
Importer note “This Rosé is sourced 100% from Syrah grown within the confines of the village of Chavanay. It is produced by the “saignée” method after a brief maceration of several hours. The fermentations are in stainless steel and the elevage continues for about six months before bottling in the spring following harvest.”

Raul Perez Ultreia Saint Jacques, Bierzo 2017 750ML ($22.95) $16.60 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Grapelive 93 points “The awesomely priced Ultreia Saint Jacques Bierzo, from the famed Raul Perez, is a deep and full flavored wine with lovely balance and energy that shows off its old vine concentration and clay based soil terroir. This multi vineyard field blend style red from Bierzo’s Valtuille zone comes from vineyard plots ranging in age from 80 to 120 years old shows Mencia in a richer form than say the Ribeira Sacra, but the small bit of Bastardo (believed to be Trousseau) and Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet) plus lots whole bunches keeps things well balanced and the fruit is contrasted by a light earthiness, savory notes, spice and mineral elements. This 2017 is ripe and dark fruited with bright blackberry, plum, currant and black cherry layers as well as snappy herbal notes, cedar and cinnamon all flowing in a rush of vivid flavors and authentic character. The vines, for all of Perez’s lineup are all organic, and for this one, were all hand tended and harvested with the oldest being from plants that date back to 1900 and the youngest from 1940, making for a wonderful regional expression of varietal character and a wine with a proud sense of place and being, it is also a fantastic gateway into Raul’s brilliant set of vinous glories. As mentioned here and across the world of wine, Raul Perez is a grand master of Mencia and the godfather of the Bierzo region with a huge impact on how this wine is seen, clearly defining what it is and should be.…This Ulteia Saint Jacques is one of Perez’s entry level bottlings, but you’d be hard pressed to find anything lacking here, though his upper end cru stuff is out of this world. The Saint Jacques was about 80% whole cluster and fermented with indigenous yeasts in large wooden vats with maceration(s) lasting between two and five months, which is a long cool period, which adds to the dimension in this beautiful Tinto. The wine, after primary is then rack to an assortment of vessels to age with a combination of French casks including 225L, 500L, foudre and with some of the wine seeing its elevage in cement cuve, after which the Saint Jacques was bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve every nuance and show the purity of this wine’s personality. I love this fresh and easy to drink young red, well I love all of Raul’s wines, but this one delivers so much for the price it is impossible to resist, drink with simple country dishes, hard cheeses and or BBQ. It’s hard to imagine a better deal on such quality old vine, medium bodied stuff!”
