Lopez de Heredia

“Perhaps no winery in the world guards its traditions as proudly and steadfastly as López de Heredia does,…it is paradoxically a winery in the vanguard, its viticulture and wine-making a shining, visionary example for young, forward-thinking producers all over the world…At López de Heredia, there is serenity that comes with adherence to core principles…” – Eric Asimov

Perched on a bend in the Rio Ebro, in Haro, Bodegas Lopez de Heredia reigns over the heart of Spain’s Rioja wine region and its tradition. Founded in 1877, Lopez de Heredia became Haro’s first winery and was one of the first three in La Rioja. The winery boasts classic late-19th century architecture, but the dug-out cellars below impress even more. Here, Tempranillo and other (blending) grapes, as well as white wine grapes, ferment in giant oak vats before ageing for several years in American and French oak and for many more years in bottle before finally leaving the winery. Finesse, fragrance, balance, and beauty like this can only be achieved with patience and experience. Still a family-run operation (now managed by Maria José and Mercedes Lopez de Heredia), Lopez de Heredia continues to produce some of Spain’s, and the world’s, most extraordinary wines. The reds drink like the Bordeaux and Burgundies of before: lighter in body than most of today’s Rioja, extremely aromatic, capable of long cellaring, and uniquely individual. The whites taste like no other. These are delicious wines to discover today, or to leave tucked away for the next generation. Anyone with a love for Riojan wine, or for Spanish history, ought to snag a few bottles of Lopez de Heredia.

Newly Arrived Wines from Lopez de Heredia

R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Gravonia Crianza Blanco, Rioja DOCa 2006 750ML ($31.95) $28 special
Wine Advocate 94 points “The warmer 2006 Viña Gravonia Crianza, a white inspired by the wines from Graves (hence the name), is pure Viura matured in well-seasoned oak barrels for four years and bottled unfiltered in November 2011. The nose does not transmit any heat whatsoever, showing notes of chamomile, beeswax, honey and aromatic herbs. The palate is sharp, medium-bodied with great acidity and freshness that is both clean and persistent; it is more austere than exuberant, which was a real surprise. Overall, it is tasty and supple. The Gravonia vineyard is very old and naturally-balanced, which shows in the wine. Against all odds, the 2006 is showing better than the 2005 today.” (04/2015)

R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva Blanco, Rioja DOCa 2003 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Wine Spectator 93 points “This distinctive white is delicate yet expressive, with a lean texture carrying lively flavors of dried apple, quince, wildflower, tarragon and vanilla. Fresh acidity carries herbal and floral notes through the long finish. Drink now through 2023.”

Case-12 R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2003 750ML ($499.95) $359 special, 5 cases available (that’s only $29.92/bottle!)
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 92 points “Bright ruby-red. Ripe cherry, vanilla and floral pastilles on the smoky, oak-spiced nose. Sweet and supple on the palate, offering pliant red fruit and spicecake flavors with suave mocha and vanilla bean nuances. Quite lively and fresh for a wine from a hot vintage, and showing no excess fat. Finishes sweet, toasty and very long, with smooth tannins making a late appearance.”
Wine Spectator 91 points “Cigar box, cedar and balsamic notes frame cherry, raisin and licorice flavors in this lean, firm red. Displays grip and focus. A traditional style. Drink now through 2023.”

Lopez de Heredia Wines Arriving August 16th

R. Lopez de Heredia Viña Bosconia Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2004 750ML ($39.95) $33 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2004 Vina Bosconia Reserva is a blend of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacho and the remaining 5% Mazuelo and Graciano aged for five years in used barrels, racked twice per year and fined with egg whites before being bottled unfiltered. Dark ruby-colored, with notes of beef blood, iron, antique shop, incense, blood orange and a touch of volatile acidity, the palate is very fresh, with good concentration, clear flavors and enough grip and fruit to age gracefully. A perfumed and feminine great Rioja. The Bosconia vineyard wines are the only ones from Lopez de Heredia bottled in Burgundy bottles. Drink now-2024.” WA

R. Lopez de Heredia Viña Cubillo Crianza, Rioja DOCa 2007 750ML ($29.95) $24 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 91+ points “The 2007 Viña Cubillo Crianza is the most affordable red. It is a wine that was born to go with tapas and to be sold at local restaurants showing a combination of fruit and the earth where the vines grow. It is a blend of the usual 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo fermented in old oak vats with natural yeasts and matured in barrel for three years. The intoxicating nose shows blood orange, bitter cherries, leather and spices in a subtle and balanced way. The palate is sinewy, polished, has good acidity and is not terribly complex nor powerful, but is built more on the subtlety and lightness. This could well be the best Cubillo of recent times.”
Lopez de Heredia Wines Arriving September 2016

R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2004 750ML ($49.95) $36 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2004 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a completely different story. It is a worthy follower of the 2001, the greatest of the Viña Tondonia Reservas of recent times. It has the usual blend and usual levels of alcohol and acidity, bottled after six years in oak barrels. The nose feels savory (if that’s possible–umami?) and developed, with tertiary aromas and good balance between spices, leathery notes, cherries and balsamic notes of cigar box and incense. The palate is both round and crisp, with refined tannins. It has very good balance with subtle acidity and very good persistence.”

Kruger-Rumpf Munsterer Dautenpflanzer Riesling Spatlese, Nahe 2004 750ML ($49.95) Displayed price $39, Your cost $35.10
[Reviewed 2015] Terry Theise notes “Dautenpflänzer is one the leading Grand Crus of the lower Nahe, with a typical mélange of soil types within its borders. Rumpf claims some of it is slatey and some of it is “sandy loam,” which agrees more with the standard references. It is in any case singular and immediately significant, giving a sometimes damnably complex set of aromas and flavors including coconut, violet, soursop, leaf-smoke—it is a very long list even if you’re sober. In any case it belongs with the vamping exotics of the Nahe.”
[Reviewed 2006] Wine Spectator 89 points “Very firmly structured, but this is dense and offers spice and mineral shadings to complement the apple and white peach notes. Still leaning toward the structure on the finish, but this shows promise. Best from 2007 through 2020. 250 cases made.” WS
[Reviewed 2005] “Rumpf’s 2004 Munsterer Dautenpflanzer Riesling Spatlese smells of pineapple, pear and white peach, following with a delicate and refined palate impression saturated with a sense of liquid slate and pure pear, peach and pineapple fruit. The finish is smooth and long with generous fruit augmented by subtle spice and crushed stone. Classic 2004 virtues are on display.” -David Schildknecht

Wine Advocate 90+ points “The 2014 Riesling Karthäuserhofberg Spätlese (AP #9) offers a very clear and complex, mineral-scented bouquet of ripe white fruits. Juicy and piquant on the palate, with grip, raciness and the lean and crystalline Karthäuserhofberg character, this is a pretty complex and persistent Spätlese with grip and a prominent crispiness. It should be cellared for at least another 5-10 years. Very good aging potential.”

Here, the richness of Pinot Noir comes through loud and clear in the wine’s depth and overall richness. Creamy and beautifully layered throughout, the 2012 hits all the right notes. The wine reveals toasty oak, blackberry and cassis fruit, beautiful texture, purity and length. This is a big-time winner and should drink well for 12-15 years.”
Antonio Galloni 92 points “Round Pond’s 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is fabulous. Aromatic, pliant and expressive, the 2013 is incredibly nuanced for such a young wine. Sweet red plum, wild flowers, mint and cinnamon meld together in a medium-bodied, gracious Cabernet that will drink well with minimal cellaring.”

“The size of Mattes-Sabran’s vineyards in the region of Corbières in the Languedoc is a legacy of the estate’s ancient role as the seat of the duke of Narbonne. Yet vine-growing and winemaking here truly stretches back centuries; parts of the ancient Roman “Via Domitia” run through the estate. Best 2014s

from Dr. Loosen, Fritz Haag

& Carl von Schubert/Maximin Grünhaus

Dr. Loosen

Two centuries of experience look good on a resume. So do 50 acres of Riesling vines planted in some of the Mosel Valley’s best vineyards. Such is the pedigree of the Dr. Loosen winery. Better than this, however, is having a fellow like Ernst Loosen at the helm of said estate. After taking over the family business in 1989, Ernst focused operations on making pure, terroir-expressive, concentrated Rieslings. Praise from reviewers and customers followed, and Ernst is something like a German wine superstar today.

To accomplish his vision for making distinguished wine, Ernst began in the vineyard, where organic viticulture let nature back into the game. He cut yields to concentrate flavors, and made sure harvesters selected only healthy, mature fruit. In the winery, Ernst kept technology at bay, preferring to let the wines develop naturally, without too much human intervention. Such was Ernst’s love for his family’s vineyards that he wanted their steep, blue slate soils to sing through the wines as loudly and clearly as possible, which they do, out of mutual respect.

Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2014 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling trocken GG Alte Reben shows a lovely purity and flintiness on the deep nose, which displays notes of crushed stones, lemon juice and also ripe fruit pips. Rich, ripe and piquant on the palate, this full-bodied Würzgarten is very mineral, but also has a certain sweetness and juiciness that is almost rounder than round, and results in a big and more opulent Riesling.”

Highly elegant and expressive on the palate this is a beautiful dry Riesling with perfect sweetness and balance. This wine is full-bodied, piquant and mineral, very complex and persistent. Dr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen Alte Reben Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Mosel 2014 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94 points “Born on red slate and sourced from the plot above the Prälat, which gives extremely small berries and results in just one fuder, the 2014 Erdener Treppchen Riesling trocken GG Alte Reben displays a deep and very dense, yet subtle bouquet of nectarines along with beautifully fine slate and flinty aromas. Round, intense and very elegant on the palate, this fully ripe and full-bodied Riesling is piquant and fresh. The wine is spectacular only in the finish, which reveals a noble, rested, perfectly balanced and highly expressive Riesling with an extremely long, complex finish. You can easily drink this beauty today, but you would waste most of its talents. I would not drink before 2022.”

Dr. Loosen Erdener Pralat Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel, Mosel 2014 750ML ($119.95) $89 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 95 points “Spicy flavors (cumin, fennel seeds) underline the perfectly ripe peach and Riesling aroma on the highly elegant nose of the gold-capsuled 2014 Erdener Prälat Riesling Auslese GK that was – like all the 2014 Auslese Rieslings – picked before the rain and rot. Generous and highly elegant on the palate, this is a sweet but also very salty and finesse-full Riesling, with a rich and creamy texture and some nutty aromas, but also a stunning purity in the background, with a long and stimulating finish. This is a spectacular Auslese that needs another 10-15 years and will still be great even in 30 years. ”

Fritz Haag

The Fritz Haag estate and vineyards reach like vines into the annals of Mosel history. The municipality of Brauneberg, famous for its single-vineyard and Grand Cru Sonnenuhr wines, caught the attention of the Romans and Napoleon alike, and records of Fritz Haag exist since 1605. This is the middle Mosel, and Brauneberg’s vertiginous, south-facing slopes of brown slate soil drain well, producing wines of powerful character. Wines from the celebrated Sonnenuhr vineyard, surrounding the well-known sundial, abound with slate-like minerality, sweetness, and refreshing acidity, and they age for decades. The Brauneberger Juffer wines, by contrast, are lighter and more delicate, while the Brauneberger Kabinett comes from early-picked grapes from both the Juffer and Sonnenuhr vineyards. All of these wines exhibit the finesse and fruit-acidity balance that has kept Fritz Haag famous to this day.

Fritz Haag Wines Arriving August 19th

Fritz Haag Brauneberger Riesling Kabinett, Mosel 2014 750ML ($29.95) $24 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2014 Brauneberger Riesling Kabinett offers the lovely, clear and delicate slate aroma intermixed with smoky and herbal aromas, but also lovely stone fruit as well. Pure, salty and piquant on the palate, this is a nicely concentrated, round and fruity Riesling with lightness, intensity and finesse, as well as a long and persistent finish. This is great terroir Riesling with salt and minerals. Extremely stimulating. Great, great Mosel Riesling from the grand cru terroirs of Brauneberg!”

Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese, Mosel 2014 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2014 Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese displays a stunningly clear, precise and mineral, flinty-flavored bouquet with lemon oil flavors on pure stones. This is a weightless, bright and finesse-full Auslese that tastes as piquant and refreshing in its bright citrus flavors as a candied grapefruit. Absolutely beautiful and elegant, and so long, stimulatingly pure and salty. Great, great Riesling!”

Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Trocken Grosses Gewachs, Mosel 2014 750ML ($79.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2014 Brauneberg Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling trocken GG displays a lovey, pure and refreshing stony bouquet with lemon and bright fruit flavors, as well as very delicate slate aromas. This is a beautiful dry Riesling of great finesse and elegance that is light but intense in its mineral complexity. Very pure, salty and provided with a lovely intensity. The wine is bottled with 13% alcohol, but you don’t taste it. Very promising.”

Carl von Schubert/Maximin Grünhauser

Facing south and overlooking the Ruwer River just before it meets the Mosel, Weingut Maximin Grünhaus has produced extraordinary Rieslings since Medieval times. Roman ruins underlie today’s estate, but it was the Saint Maximin Abbey that made this area famous for wine. The Abtsberg vineyard, known for its concentrated yet supple and perfectly balanced wines, once supplied the Abbott himself, while the equally long-lived Herrenberg vineyard wines satisfied the Abbey’s choirmasters. Weingut Maximin Grünhaus continues the tradition of crafting wines fit for the elite. They farm the vineyards following organic principles, keep yields low, and harvest by hand. Large Fuder casks, made from oaks on the estate, help the wines achieve their greatness. Tasting a Riesling from Weingut Maximin Grünhaus means tasting a lineage of German winemaking history.

Carl von Schubert/Maximin Grünhauser Wines Arriving August 19th

Carl von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Riesling Alte Reben Trocken, Mosel 2014 750ML ($34.95) $27 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 91+ points “The 2014 Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Riesling Trocken Alte Reben displays a very clear, subtle and elegant plum-brandy and white nectarine aroma. Full-bodied and very elegant on the palate, with intensity and minerality, this is a more concentrated, richer and round Riesling from the Herrenberg with a good mineral length. At this early stage, the juicy Alte Reben shows more of a GG-style than the Grünhaus character, though I wonder if not the ‘regular’ Herrenberg trocken is more drinking fun in the next five or 15 years. 11.5% alcohol is pretty Grünhaus though.”
This is the only listing in the USA today!

Carl von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Superior Riesling, Mosel 2014 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94 points “Very clear and smoky on the still discreet and yeasty-flavored, dense nose, the 2014 Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Superior is a very elegant and round, finesse-full and persistent Riesling; it has a long and salty, very complex but beautifully fine, yet firmly structured and great finish. Impressive Riesling for the next 25 or 30 or more years.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Carl von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Spatlese, Mosel 2014 750ML ($39.95) $33 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2014 Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Spätlese (AP #12) opens very clear and smoky on the deep and aromatic nose. It is piquant and intense on the palate, very juicy and concentrated, firm and potent, and far away from being ready to drink. It is lush and piquant, very mineral and racy, and needs at least 15 years to reveal its true talents. This is a great Spätlese in Grand Cru format. Bottled with 68 grams of residual sugar.”

Carl von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Riesling Spatlese, Mosel 2014 750ML ($37.95) $29 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2014 Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese (AP #7) offers a super clear and stony flavored bouquet with some yeasty flavors, which you can also find in the Kabinett. Sweet and filigreed on the weightless and highly elegant palate, this is a gorgeously fine and stimulating Spätlese with a beautiful salinity. Bottled with 72 grams of residual sugar per liter, you taste nothing but fruit. This is very precise and well articulated Riesling of great finesse and elegance, and probably the finest Herrenberg of the 2014 vintage. Lightness and goodness as character.”

New Oregon Winery Alert: Franchere Wine Company

Mike Hinds, Oregon native and descendent of Gabriel Franchère who clerked for John Jacob Astor and helped establish Fort Astoria, released his first wine in 2013. He had worked in the wine shops of Chicago before returning home to take viticulture classes and to work in the cellar of Illahe Vineyards. Despite its relative youth, the winemaking venture shows great potential. Hinds is decidedly hands-off in the vineyard and winery with all sustainable practices, no irrigation, all native yeasts, low sulfites, and no new oak, and he’s taken the conscious decision to let the vintages speak for themselves, be them warm or cool. His preference in wine is less of a focus on the fruit and more on the savory characteristics – and it shows. The Gruner, which was surprisingly aromatic, had a more herbal inflection: think licorice and, yes, chamomile. A very pretty wine that would accompany many hard-to-pair offerings such as vegetarian dishes, roast squash or even asparagus. The Pinot Noir, from the Zena Springs Vineyard (with its southeast facing slope and early sunset due to the nearby ridge crest) offers a savory, smoky black pepper note alongside aromas of green tobacco and fresh cherries. It’s concentrated yet light on its feet for a 2014 at just 12.6% alcohol. The Syrah is a dark, inky purple with notes of plum, olive tapenade and a stony quality. It was a little tight and closed off since the bottle was only just opened, but offered hints of great potential as the glass sat for a few.

We are pleased to offer these three new selections from Franchere, arriving next Friday, August 19th:

Franchere Wine Company Havlin Vineyard Gruner Veltliner, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($17.95) $16 pre-arrival special
Winery note “Partly fermented in neutral tank, partly in acacia barrel. Primary fermentation lasted 9 months and finished in July 2015. Beguiling chamomile and nutmeg aromas, with textural impact.”

Franchere Wine Company Zena Springs Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2014 750ML ($27.95) $24 pre-arrival special
Winery note “Vineyard leased and farmed by Franchere – no herbicides or systemic fungicides. Southeastern slope on marine sedimentary soils. Structured, elegant, and complex.”

Franchere Wine Company Havlin Vineyard Syrah, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 pre-arrival special
Winery note “Sinewy, energetic, savory, ageable. Phenolic ripeness occurs at low brix thanks to the shallow marine sedimentary soil and bedrock of near-solid ironstone.”

New 2009 Release from J Christopher

J. Christopher ‘Appasionata’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2009 750ML ($89.95) $79 pre-arrival special, ETA August 19th
Winery note “The Appassionata bottling is a special selection of a few extraordinary barrels of Pinot Noir, aged and released only when winemakers Jay and Ernst Loosen believe it is ready to drink. This cuvée is dense and powerful, yet retains an Old World elegance and finesse, beautifully showing off the magic transformation that only comes from bottle age. The 2009 is the third release of the Appassionata, with only 96 6-packs produced from two barrels of Abbey Ridge Vineyard.”

Domaine Huet
& Domaine Guiberteau
Loire Legends

Arriving September

Domaine Huet:

Domaine Huet, founded in 1928 by Victor Huet and his son Gaston, is the first name for the finest Vouvray. Some call it the best Chenin Blanc on the planet. Made according to tradition and terroir, with utmost respect for nature, Huet wines can keep for over a century. Every wine lover should try one, be it an older vintage or new, a sec, demi-sec, moelleux, or sparkling.

Today, Domaine Huet owns 74 acres across three parcels. Le Haut-Lieu vineyard produces the most straight-forward wines. Le Mont’s low-yielding vines make supple wines. And Le Clos de Bourg, whose shallow, clay-limestone soil drains especially well, provides wines of great structure and ageing potential. The three vineyards are vinified separately.

This was one of France’s pioneers in biodynamic viticulture. Horses still plough between the rows. In the winery, the recipe remains relatively simple. Fermentation takes place half in stainless steel, half in old oak, without malo. After only six months, the wines are bottled and then laid to age in a cellar dug from tuffeau rock, no air conditioning required. From here the Huet work is done: the rest is up to nature, Vouvray, and what eventually tastes like divine intervention. Who wouldn’t want to acquire some of that?

Domaine Huet Wines Arriving in September

Domaine Huet Vouvray Petillant Brut 2012 750ML ($29.95) $24 pre-arrival special
Importer note “Grapes sourced from several estate parcels on Vouvray’s esteemed Premiere Côte in limestone-rich clay soils. All grapes are harvested by hand. Bottled before primary fermentation is finished, resulting in a lower pressure sparkling wine – pétillant – because only a portion of the fermentation occurs inside the bottle. Yeast is added to ensure the fermentation progresses smoothly. Once finished the wine is disgorged. Dosage = 10 g/l and is made up of cane sugar and demi-sec or moelleux wines from a previous vintage.”

Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Sec 2015 750ML ($37.95) $30.90 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 93 points “Solidly ripe, with a full-bodied core of ginger, pear and persimmon notes allied to a racy spine that lengthens the finish, letting ginger, quince and green almond accents play out. This should age well in the cellar. Best from 2017 through 2027.”

Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Mont Sec 2015 750ML ($39.95) $33.60 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 93 points “A light echo of baked apple leads off, followed by quince, powdered ginger and verbena notes at the core. The long, minerally finish features rippling acidity. Still tight, so let this unwind in the cellar. Best from 2017 through 2027.”

Domaine Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Demi-Sec 2015 750ML ($47.95) $39 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 94 points “Quite ripe, with tropical mango and papaya notes mixed with peach, apple and quince flavors. Pretty ginger and heather details fill in the background, while the finish shows a well-embedded mineral edge, imparting tension to match the opulence. Best from 2017 through 2030.”
Importer note “This ancient, walled vineyard has the estate’s shallowest, stoniest soils. The wines are rich and intense. Many consider this to be Vouvray’s finest single vineyard site. Size: 6 hectares Orientation: South-facing Soil: Limestone-rich clay soils — the stoniest of the three crus. Viticulture: The vines are farmed using biodynamic methods and harvested by hand. Vinification: Undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation in large, old oak demi-muids as well as stainless steel vats. There is no encouragement of the malolactic fermentation, thus many Huet wines remain rich in malic acid, a character that brings an age-worthiness to the wines. The concentration of residual sugar in demi-sec cuvées is traditionally around 10-20 g/l.”

Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Demi-Sec 2015 750ML ($41.95) $36 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 94 points “Features a wide range of apple, green melon, ginger and green plum notes gliding throughout, with the off-dry edge imparting a flattering feel. Latent minerality lengthens the finish. Best from 2017 through 2030.”

Domaine Guiberteau:
Arriving in September

Romain Guiberteau bears one of the most esteemed names in all of the Loire; the Guilberteaus have grown grapes in the region for over the past 100 years. His great-grandfather began purchasing sites in the area prior to the First World War, slowly giving way to a familial tradition and an enviable roster of vineyard sites. Romain’s grandfather, one-time mayor and head of the local growers’ cooperative, was a beloved member of Saumur’s winemaking community. He and his wife built upon the family’s land holdings until their son took over. It was he who converted the domaine to organic viticulture, slowly pulling back land from the co-op for the family’s private use. Soon after, Romain left a career in law and joined his father. Today, Romain carries on family’s traditions while forging the domaine onward.

Worth mentioning is that Romain was mentored by the Foucault brothers over at the inimitable Clos Rougeard. It’d be equally unwise to depend upon the relationship as it would be to downplay it, however. Search online for Guiberteau and you’re sure to come across the proxy-sales and comparisons – “the new Rougeard”, “the Disciple”, and so forth.

Clos Rougeard being the most famed and important domaine of the region makes this a rather impressive – and daunting – comparison. The Guiberteaus and Foucaults share some vineyard sources and, above all, a determination to craft the very best wines possible from their land. These are stand-out wines with true pedigree; whatever it may have been that the Foucaults told Romain, it seems to be working… Domaine Guiberteau itself is now one of the most sought-after producers in the Loire.

The “Domaine” wines from Guiberteau are rendered in all stainless steel with the vision to showcase purity of fruit and freshness. Vineyard-designate wines are raised in both new and used oak with extended lees contact. We’re thrilled to offer an array of the domaine’s wines, all viewable below.
