Ian D’Agata–Vinous 93 points “Bright red. Captivating aromas of ripe red berries, red cherry, marzipan and strawberry jelly, nicely complicated by a fresh violet note. Bright and vibrant on the palate, with suave red fruit flavors lifted by harmonious acidity, which provides wonderful clarity and cut and extends the flavors at the back. The extremely long finish features noteworthy minerality and precision. Outstanding pure Brunello: one of the year’s ten best.” ID

OREGON
J. Christopher Sauvignon Blanc, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($19.95) $16.60 special
Winery note “Sauvignon Blanc is a specialty at J. Christopher. Although not widely planted in Oregon’s Northern Willamette Valley, Sauvignon Blanc is ideal for the area’s climate, as this wine proves. Made in the clean, fresh style of France’s Loire Valley, this wine is fermented in stainless steel and does not go through malolactic fermentation. The result is a classic, highly aromatic Sauvignon Blanc with perfect ripeness and excellent acidity.”
J. Christopher ‘Uber Sauvignon’ Sauvignon Blanc, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($34.95) $28 special
Winery note “The Über-Sauvignon is sourced from the Willamette Valley’s excellent Croft Vineyard. Unlike our other Sauvignon Blancs, which are fermented in stainless steel, the Über-Sauvignon is fermented and matured in 500-liter barrels made of acacia wood. Acacia barrels give the wine greater complexity and a more expansive mid-palate texture, without the strong aroma or taste of oak.”
Elk Cove Vineyards Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2013 750ML ($29.95) $26 special
Wine Spectator 90 points “Fresh and expressive, light-footed and generous, with cherry, plum and apricot flavors, coming together smoothly on the open-textured finish. Drink now through 2019.” WS
Domaine Serene ‘Yamhill Cuvee’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2012 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 special
Winery notes “Consistent from vintage to vintage as the “little sister” of the Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir, the Yamhill Cuvée Pinot Noir is a blend from each of our vineyard sites that results in a vibrant, food friendly Pinot Noir. This wine has an aroma profile that consists of red fruit, minerality, sweet and complex spice, earth and a hint of French oak. The palate offers youthful tannins and balanced acidity which lead to a smooth and graceful finish. The Yamhill Cuvée is approachable in its youth while maintaining the elegance and finesse of a Domaine Serene Pinot Noir.”

Gramercy Cellars ‘The Deuce’ Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2012 750ML ($69.95) $59 special

Bartolo Mascarello Dolcetto d’Alba, Piedmont 2013 750ML ($37.95) $29 special
Antonio Galloni 90 points “The 2013 Dolcetto d’Alba is striking. Violets, lavender, black cherries and sweet spices lift from the glass in a Dolcetto built on perfume, sweet fruit and compelling overall balance. Dolcetto has rarely been so refined.” AG
Bartolo Mascarello Barolo DOCG 2010 750ML ($399.95) $299 special
Antonio Galloni 99 points “The 2010 Barolo is one of the most striking, hauntingly beautiful wines I have ever tasted here. Mysterious and slow to show its cards, the 2010 impresses for its inner perfume, sweetness and exceptional overall balance. Today the striking fruit and classic, austere elements of the vintage take turns in dominating the wine’s balance. The 2010 was always magnificent in barrel. It is equally spectacular from bottle. Readers who can find the 2010 should not hesitate. Ideally I wouldn’t dream of touching a bottle until age 15 or so, although I doubt I will personally have the discipline to follow my own advice!” AG

Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses, Loire 2002 750ML ($34.95) $28 special, 24 bottles available
John Gilman 93 points “The 2002 vintage in Chinon is excellent and the Raffault Picasses is a perfect example of how the slightly less ripe aspects of the 2002 vintage have produced even more vivid aromatic and flavor purity in the wines. The utterly classic nose soars from the glass in a blaze of black cherries, cassis, new leather, espresso, gravelly soil tones…On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite transparent, with a very good core, modest tannins, sound acids and lovely focus and complexity on the long, poised and transparent finish.” JG
Domaine Tempier Bandol Rose 2014 750ML ($44.95) $39 special, 18 bottles available
Wine Spectator 92 points “Bright and high-pitched, this features a talc note that gives way to rosemary and white cherry hints, while the finish races along with sea salt and blood orange details. Long, chiseled and pure. A delicious rosé that should unwind further with some cellaring. Drink now through 2016.” WS
Wine Advocate 92 points “Domaine Tempier’s 2014 Bandol Rose continue to show why it’s considered one of the best rosés in the world. Made with a hefty chunky of Mourvedre, it offers beautifully crisp and precise notes of orange blossom, crushed rock, mineral water and white flower that flow seamlessly to a medium-bodied, balanced, lively and fresh style on the palate. While this doesn’t have the heft of sheer fruit of a top Tavel, it has more tension and focus, and I suspect it will put on weight with another 3-4 months in bottle. In short, it’s a beautiful Bandol rosé that delivers everything you could want from a rosé. It has the juiciness and freshness to drink nicely on its own or at the start of a meal, as well as the complexity and depth to handle any number of richer foods.”

Case-6 Delille Four Flags Cab 2012 ($419.95) $359 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Delille Four Flags Cab 2012 ($819.95) $659 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 96 points “The limited production 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Four Flags is an off-the-hook effort. Decadent, layered, unctuous and rich, with classic Cabernet notes of blackcurrants, chocolate, lead pencil, crushed rock and graphite, this awesome 2012 hits the palate with full-bodied richness, no hard edges, a stacked, rich, concentrated mid-palate, and loads of sweet tannin that are almost completely hidden under all of the wine’s fruit and texture. Given the wealth of material here, it’s already hard to resist, but don’t let that fool you, this has the balance, concentration and structure to keep for 2-3 decades. It’s a sensational Cabernet from this team that should not be missed.” WA

Quilceda Creek ‘CVR’ Red Wine, Columbia Valley 2013 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 91-93 points “Slightly darker in color than the ’12, the 2013 CVR Columbia Valley Red Wine has plenty of chocolaty dark fruits, licorice and classic Cabernet herb qualities to go with a full-bodied, sexy, seamless and hard-to-resist style on the palate. While it shows the more focused nature of the vintage, it has plenty of fruit and no shortage of tannin, so while billed as the entry-level cuvee, it will still have a decade of longevity.” WA

Bodegas Borsao
Value Spanish Wine
“One of my favorite value wineries, Bodegas Borsao was founded in 1958 and Jorge Ordoñez has been bringing these wines into America since he started his company, Fine Estates From Spain, in 1987. He literally put the Campo de Borja appellation on the map, and has done much to encourage consumer attraction to the Grenache grape that is grown in abundance. This winery owns 3,700+ acres of vines, one-third planted with Grenache and the rest Tempranillo, Viura, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mazuelo. All the vineyards are planted at relatively high elevations above 1,300 feet. The soils tend to be poor in organic material, but high in chalk/limestone intermixed with sand, iron and gravel. The hallmark of the Borsao wines are their unmanipulated, fresh, lively fruit character.” –Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate

Stephen Tanzer 92 points “(half fermented in French oak and half in stainless steel): Bright purple. Heady aromas of blueberry, cherry compote, white pepper and woodsmoke, plus an exotic cinnamon note. Fresh and seamless, offering vibrant blueberry and black raspberry flavors and suave floral notes. The spicy quality lingers seductively on the tenacious finish.”
Robert Parker 92 points “The terrific 2012 Tres Picos is one of the finest inexpensive, Grenache-based wines made in the world. This full-bodied beauty boasts a deep ruby color as well as loads of strawberry and black cherry fruit, hints of lavender and crushed rocks, sweet tannin, and a broad, savory mouthfeel. It, too, should be consumed over the next 3-4 years.”

Case-12 Bodegas Borsao Vina Borgia, Campo de Borja 2012 750ML ($99.95) $86 special, 2 cases available
Stephen Tanzer 88 points “Bright purple. Jammy black and blue fruits on the nose and in the mouth. Plump, juicy and tannin-free, making for very easy drinkability. For the money, this really delivers, a point not missed by the numerous restaurants that are pouring this fruit bomb by the glass. ” ST

L. Aubry Champagne
“One of the most original estates in Champagne.” -Peter Liem, Champagneguide.net
Located in the village of Jouy-lès-Reims, L. Aubry sits on the harmonious hills of Petite Montagne, in the Western sector of the Montagne de Reims. L. Aubry is recognized as a grower Champagne, a small family producer that grows their grapes and makes their wine exclusively from their own vineyards. Grower Champagne is often considered analogous to the small, family estates of Burgundy, which speaks measures when considering the quality of the wines. The big names in Champagne we all too often hear about are negociants, producing millions of cases a year in which all of the grapes are purchased from vineyards throughout the entire region. The typical Grower Champagne producer makes fewer than 5,000 cases per year.
L. Aubry is one of the very few producers in Champagne to use the regions indigenous and somewhat forgotten varieties; Arbanne, Petit Meslier, Fromentea (Pinot Gris), and Enfumé, (a supposed mutation of Pinot Meunier). The estate’s plantings of these rarely used grapes were completed in 1989, coincidentally marking the Aubry family’s 200 year anniversary of cultivating grapes. Also, many of the vines on the estate are planted “en foule,” untouched and as they were before the devastation of phylloxera. These grapes are being blended with the more familiar Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, and the use of these seldom seen varieties have been a major factor in putting Aubry on the map, expressing their originality.
Following a philosophy of discipline, respect for tradition and creativity, twin brothers Phillipe and Pierre Aubry have followed the family tradition and are now the current proprietors. Descendants of a long line of winemakers, the brothers celebrate the tradition by bringing back these varieties their ancestors once used. They have worked together to express beautiful interpretations of these ancient grapes that impart unique flavors and textures to the different blends. All vineyards are Premier Cru, with the soils consisting of a deeper type of clay and sandy topsoil, bringing a slightly less austere character to the wines and showing more purity of fruit. Aubry truly expresses the originalities and complexities of a ‘Grower Champagne’, full of individuality and incomparable character.

Stephen Tanzer 91 points “(45% Pinot Meunier, 25% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay, with the rest Arbanne, Petit Meslier and Fromenteau; disgorged in April, 2013): Bright straw. Pungent aromas of Meyer lemon, pear and fig, with a gingery accent adding lift. Sappy, penetrating citrus fruit and floral flavors are given a refreshingly bitter character by notes of pear skin and peach pit, with a waxy note coming up on the back half. A smoky nuance lingers on the finish, which shows very good clarity and length…”

L. Aubry Le Nombre d’Or Campanae Veteres Vites Brut 2009 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 2 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2009 Brut Le Nombre d’Or Campanae Veteres Vites is another striking wine from Aubry. Lemon peel, almonds, white flowers and spices are laced together in a Champagne endowed with a real sense of phenolic weight and verticality. Many of the current releases from Aubry are finely cut this year, but the Le Nombre d’Or Campanae Veteres Vites is a wine that is very much tied to the ground. The 2009 is 25% Pinot Blanc/Fromenteau, 20% Petit Meslier, 15% Arbanne, 15% Chardonnay, 5% Pinot Meunier and 20% Pinot Noir. Bottled February 2014. Dosage is 3 grams per liter.” AG
L. Aubry Le Nombre d’Or Sable Blanc de Blancs Brut 2007 750ML ($89.95) $79 special, 1 bottle available
Stephen Tanzer 92 points “Made from 30% Chardonnay, 30% Petit Meslier, 20% Arbanne and 20% Pinot Blanc, with a very low dosage of 2 g/l; disgorged June, 2012): Light yellow. Intensely perfumed bouquet of orchard fruits, tangerine, chamomile and anise, along with a suggestion of ginger and a mounting floral element. Firm and dry in the mouth, with chewy pear skin and citrus flavors giving way to deeper peach and nectarine on the back half. Shows a suave blend of richness and energy, finishing very long, with lingering spiciness and minerality.”

L. Aubry Le Nombre d’Or Sable Blanc de Blancs Brut 2009 750ML ($89.95) $69 special, 9 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 93 points “Lemon oil, white flowers, mint and crushed rocks jump from the glass in Aubry’s 2009 Sablé Blanc des Blancs, a blend of Chardonnay, Arbanne, Petit Meslier and Fromenteau. The bright, focused style will appeal most to readers who enjoy tense, vibrant Champagnes. This is a stellar showing from the Aubry brothers. Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2009 Sablé Rosé Nicolas François Aubry is steely and reserved in this vintage. This is one of the more vibrant, tense 2009 Champagnes readers will come across. Rose petal, cranberry, crushed rocks and mint all jump from the glass. The 2009 Sablé Rosé is another inward Aubry Champagne that needs time in bottle. But it is striking just the same. The 2009 spent 50 months on the lees and was bottled with no dosage.” AG
Stephen Tanzer 91 points “Bright onion skin color. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes red berries, cherry pit, smoky minerals and dried flowers. Understated strawberry and orange flavors are dry and lively, with zesty minerality adding cut. Firm and spicy, finishing with very good focus and thrust. This Champagne received no dosage at all.”

Fresh citrus zest, strawberry and quince aromas are deepened by notes of anise, vanilla and musky herbs. Dusty, gripping lemon rind and blood orange flavors give way to deeper red berries in the mid-palate, picking up a hint of chalky minerality on the back half. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by a rich, full-bodied wine displaying lots of boysenberry, black raspberry and cherry fruit intermixed with hints of incense and Asian spice. Wine Advocate 90 points “The Grenache dominated 2012 Cairanne Vieilles Vignes (which also incorporates some Carignan and Syrah) spent 12 months in concrete tanks prior to bottling. Wine Advocate 92 points “A custom cuvee for Eric Solomon made by Christophe Sabon, the 2012 Cotes du Rhone Cuvee Reserve comes from older vines on the estate and is a blend of 55% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 10% Carignan and the balance Mourvedre and Cinsault. Aged 12 months in foudre, it’s another superb value from this estate, and since 2011, the Cuvee Reserve has been a significant step up over the estate’s classic Cotes du Rhone release. Drinking well past its humble price point, this 2012 exhibits notions of kirsch, blackberry, smoked meat, graphite and copious licorice nuances to go with a medium to full-bodied, pure and layered feel on the palate. It shows the purity of the vintage, as well as the richness and texture that this estate is known for. It should continue to thrill for another 4-5 years.” WA

These 70 year old vines are from the famed “Garblet Sué” parcel (more commonly referred to as “Bricco del Fiasc”) in Castiglione Falletto. Any other estate would have long since cashed in by planting Nebbiolo. This vineyard is planted at almost 1,000 feet elevation which is about as high as Falletto gets.
