Pago Casa Gran
Pago Casa Gran is not a household name in the United States, even amongst avid Spanish wine drinkers. But this has nothing to do with the quality or profundity of the wines. Instead, they remain firmly under-the-radar because they are so difficult to find. But this fact will undoubtedly change once more people have had the opportunity to taste them.
Hailing from Valencia, an up-and-coming yet still underappreciated region of Spain, Pago Casa Gran represents everything that we love about contemporary Spanish wine. In the vineyard, biodiversity and sustainability aren’t buzzwords, but mantras. In the cellar, only native yeasts are accepted, and both modern and ancient winemaking practices are embraced. The results are terroir driven wines with character. And with all four bottlings ringing in under $15, a price point that often telegraphs conventional farming and commercial winemaking, you’d be hard-pressed to find more heart for the money.

Andre Clouet
New Releases Arriving in November
Jean-François Clouet is a figure from a fever dream of acid and chalk – he is enigmatic, hilarious and dedicated to making some amazing wines. While his notes are difficult to decode, there are glimmers of his secrets in every bottle. He’s been dedicated to his craft since a very young age, and the love for his home shows. Some fans are frustrated by the lack of specifics as to blends and tirage, but the results speak for themselves. As huge fans of his wines, we won’t sweat the details. We’d rather just enjoy the results.
The family owns beautiful mid-slope vineyards situated between Bouzy and Ambonnay, and the centuries of knowledge passed down, generation to generation, showcase the stunning fruit. From the juicy and powerful Grande Reserve (a budget Blanc de Noirs that delivers), to the Dream Vintage releases (Blanc de Blancs from special vintages that are only disgorged upon order from the importer), to the cellar stars from Le Clos Bouzy (ancient vines in a tiny walled vineyard), consistency and quality are hallmarks of Clouet’s wines. Any time we get to dip into new arrivals, the debate and speculation flows over the blends and techniques, but there is always consensus regarding the quality.
Arguably the star of the show is the 2004 Dream Vintage. One of our absolute favorite vintages, the 2004 showed a laser like acidity upon release. We thought the Special Club releases from the vintage were among the best we’ve ever had. The 2004 Dream Vintage takes that focus and diffuses it across your palate, while the body builds and adds a creamy texture (one that requires extra time to create). It will hold in your cellar for some time, continuing to develop, but it is pretty incredible now. The 2006 was a warmer vintage, and the Chardonnay has a little more spice to the nose, but the wine is still lovely. 2013 is young, but shows great potential to develop over the next decade – if you can hold off opening them.
And don’t overlook the Grande Reserve, non-dosage Silver (which is blended with a small amount of Chardonnay), and the Rosé. All three drink above their price point and offer tremendous flavor for everyday drinking. These are wines to stock up on and drink ANY-time. The Grande Reserve is still one of our favorite wines to bring to friends, be it for a celebration or a Tuesday. We keep Clouet on hand, but the Dream Vintages are in limited supply. Move on these quickly.

William Kelley-Wine Advocate 90 points “The latest release of André Clouet’s NV Brut Grand Réserve Grand Cru is showing well, exhibiting a nicely integrated bouquet of red apple, ripe citrus fruit, honeycomb and blanched almonds, followed by a medium to full-bodied, enveloping palate with a fine mousse, ripe but racy acids and an elegant, understated profile, concluding with a well-defined finish. This is a stylish, harmonious wine that makes for a fine introduction to the Clouet portfolio.” [Reviewed April 2019]

John Gilman 90 points “I believe that this bottle of André Clouet “Silver” Blanc de Noirs non-vintage Brut Nature is from the base year of 2013, as it has a small code printed on the back of the neck label that says “LS13”. In any case, the wine is quite good, showing that lovely structural rounding from a bit of additional aging in the cellars. The bouquet offers up scents of apple, nectarine, bread dough, a good base of soil and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and nicely balanced, with refined mousse, bright, nicely-integrated acids and a long, complex finish. This is a quite good bottle of Brut Nature. 2019-2030+.”

Case-6 Andre Clouet Un Jour de 1911… Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($599.95) $449 special
Antoni Galloni 93+ points “[Review is for a prior disgorgement] The NV Grand Cru Cuvee 1911 emerges from the glass with the most haunting of perfumes. Sweet rose petal and jasmine are some of the nuances that emerge over time. Despite recent disgorgement, the purity of the fruit and the extraordinary elegance of the mousse are hard to miss. This is an exceptional, elegant version of the 1911 that should drink beautifully for years to come. The bottle I tasted needed quite a bit of air to open up, so readers should be patient with the wine at this stage.”
Andre Clouet ‘Le Clos’ Bouzy Grand Cru Brut, Champagne 2006 1.5L ($379.95) $319 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2006 is the first release of Clouet’s Clos de Bouzy, a 100% Pinot bottled only in magnum. Considering the year and the richness of Pinot from Bouzy, the Clos de Bouzy is surprisingly bright and floral in its aromas and flavors. The Pinot is mostly felt in the wine’s richness and texture. Dried pears, flowers, spices and anise emerge over time, but the 2006 is first and foremost a wine of subtlety. It will be interesting to see if the 2006 puts on additional weight in bottle. (Magnum only)”
VinopolNote: A limited production bottling, all from one of the four walled Grand Cru vineyards in Champagne. 100% Pinot Noir.

Case-12 Andre Clouet Grand Cru Brut Rosé, Champagne NV 750ML ($599.95) $469 pre-arrival special ETA Mid-November
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 90 points “The latest release of Clouet’s deeply colored NV Brut Rosé No 3 Grand Cru is showing well, opening in the glass with notes of blood orange, red berries, ripe apples and oatmeal. On the palate, it’s full-bodied, broad and vinous, with ripe acids, a frothy mousse and a moderately intense finish. This is an attractive, gastronomic rosé that hails exclusively from Bouzy.” [Reviewed April 2019]
Andre Clouet ‘Dream Vintage’ Brut, Champagne 2004 750ML ($89.95) $69 pre-arrival special ETA Mid-November
100% Chardonnay, bottled one year after harvest. Disgorged on order.
Antonio Galloni 91 points “The 2004 Brut Dream Vintage is elegant, polished and medium in body, as wines in this vintage tend to be. Nicely balanced and harmonious, the 2004 will drink well for at least a handful of years.”
This is the only listing in the USA today!
Andre Clouet ‘Dream Vintage’ Brut, Champagne 2006 750ML ($79.95) $59 pre-arrival special ETA Mid-November
100% Chardonnay, bottled one year after harvest. Disgorged on order.
VinopolNote: Andre Clouet is a Champagne house known for many things, chief among them being some of the best values in the appellation. The wines they’re making are fantastic, from their base non-vintage blend all the way through the prestige “1911” cuvee which is perpetually one of the best under $100 Champagnes out there. The wines, on the whole, tend to be Pinot based, which makes our offering today a bit of a departure: it is 100% Chardonnay. Andre Clouet calls this new release “Dream Vintage” and like everything else they make, it’s a steal for the price. Made with Grand Cru fruit, it’s bottled a year after vintage and then disgorged to order. Let that sink in for a second. The wines have been on the lees for a long time and well, they’re from great vintages to begin with. The 2006 will be classically proportioned, with a balance of richness and elegance buttressed by the extended time on the lees. The only catch with these are the quantities involved: we won’t have these around for long.

Aldo Conterno
Aldo Conterno is one of Piedmont’s defining modern producers. His split from his family in the late 1960’s (after years of arguing with his brother about winemaking style) was a watershed moment in Barolo’s history. And over the next several decades he established his namesake winery as one of the most important in Italy.
Based in the Bussia hamlet in Monforte, Aldo Conterno’s wines have always been powerful yet polished, with dark rich fruit. But despite their evident density and power, they maintain a remarkable level of nuance and complexity. Needless to say these wines are epic, and if you like a more modern interpretation of Nebbiolo and Barbera, you simply won’t find a smarter buy than these modern classics.

Case-12 Poderi Aldo Conterno Conca Tre Pile Barbera d’Alba, Piedmont 2017 750ML ($419) $359 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2017 Barbera d’Alba Conca Tre Pile is piled high with dark fruit intensity, soft tannins and a pinch of fresh acidity that breaks apart the wine’s rich fruit flavors. The hot vintage has taken well to the Barbera grape, accentuating its volume, richness and generosity. The bouquet offers black fruit, dried plum, spice, truffle-infused earth and toasted hazelnut. Some 20,000 bottles were made.”
Poderi Aldo Conterno Colonnello, Barolo DOCG 2016 750ML ($219.95) $179 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 96 points “Very fine-grained with pretty berry, spice, roasted-nut and cedar aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied and chewy, yet polished and intense. Very, very long. Try after 2022.”
Wine Advocate 95+ points “The Poderi Aldo Conterno 2016 Barolo Bussia Colonnello shows dark fruit intensity, dried cherry, spice, licorice and tilled earth. The wine delivers its aromas in a direct and immediate manner, with menthol and balsam herb fitting into oaky aromas of sweet spice. For whatever reason, I notice the oak more in Colonnello, but this will relax with time. The wine will be ready to drink after the 10-year mark. Approximately 6,000 bottles were made.”
Poderi Aldo Conterno Bussia Cicala, Barolo DOCG 2016 750ML ($199.95) $169 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 98 points “A really exotic red, showing burnt orange-peel to the dried-strawberry, chocolate-powder and light toasted-oak character. It’s full-bodied and chewy, yet ever so polished. A wild wine. Drink after 2022 and onwards.”
Wine Advocate 96 points “The Poderi Aldo Conterno 2016 Barolo Bussia Cicala offers a ripe fruit profile with layers of menthol and medicinal herb. The finish is beautiful, long and chalky, and you don’t get as much alcohol in the Cicala (compared to Romirasco). The fruit is dried and streamlined, and this wine does show good promise for aging. The tannins are beautiful, coating your teeth and palate with no bitter edge. About 6,000 bottles were made.”

In stock now:
Poderi Aldo Conterno Bussia Cicala, Barolo DOCG 2009 750ML ($179.95) $119 special, 7 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points “Aromas of fresh cherry, raspberry, licorice and spice fill the glass as this red unfolds. Offers dense tannins and bright acidity, lending definition to the cherry, strawberry, tobacco and spice flavors that persist through the long finish. Best from 2017 through 2030. 300 cases imported.”
Antonio Galloni 94 points “An aromatically beguiling wine, the 2009 Barolo Cicala is laced with dark plums, truffles, tar, incense and a host of other balsamic-infused aromas. Today, the fruit lies a bit in the background, while the wine’s aromatics and overall structure are much more in evidence. I imagine the 2009 will require at least a few more years in bottle to flesh out, but it is quite beautiful, even at this stage. There is a weightless tension in the 2009 that is remarkable.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2009 Barolo Cicala reveals the particular dynamic of the vintage with firmly astringent tannins and power coupled with a leaner, more streamlined mouthfeel. You can also feel some of the heat of the 2009 summer with upfront aromas of prune and cassis followed by a visibly darker appearance and sweet spice on the bouquet. The wine has the inherent complexity, structure and acidity for long aging, but it offers less pulp to sink your teeth into. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.”

Also in stock now (from the other side of the Conterno family split):
Giacomo Conterno Vigna Francia Barbera d’Alba, Piedmont 2017 750ML ($79.95) $66 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 94 points “Compared to the expression from the Cerretta vineyard, the 2017 Barbera d’Alba Vigna Francia is even darker in color with more austerity and muscle power at the back. The alcohol reading of the two wines is the same (15.5%), but this expression offers less obvious fruit and more dark mineral instead. The soils in the Francia vineyard see a mix of limestone sand and clay, and this is true of where both the Barbera and the Nebbiolo vines are located. You sense an increased mineral presence in the Francia with iron, salt and scorched earth. This full-throttle Barbera is penetrating and deep. This is a fine expression of the grape, offering exacting detail and precision.-ML”
Antonio Galloni 92-95 points “The 2017 Barbera d’Alba Francia is ravishingly beautiful. Silky, sensual and impeccably polished, with tremendous palate presence. A rush of sweet red cherry, raspberry and pomegranate fruit punctuates this vivid, radiant Barbera from Conterno. The richness of the warm, dry year is very much in evidence, and yet the wine is superb.”
This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!
Giacomo Conterno Francia Barolo DOCG, Piedmont 2015 750ML ($349.95) $299 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 98 points “The 2015 Barolo Francia is a soaring, regal wine endowed with tremendous intensity in all of its dimensions. The most reticent and inward of the 2015s, the Francia possesses superb textural density and persistence all the way through to the explosive finish. An immense, towering Barolo, the Francia is positively stellar. It is also going to require a number of years to be at its best. In recent years, the Conterno Barolo Francia has often been relatively accessible post bottling, the 2015 is far from that.”
Wine Spectator 97 points “A rich, plum- and cherry-laced red, aligned with a sumptuous texture, lively acidity and refined tannins. Though dense, this remains light-footed and beautifully integrated. Bass notes of tar, soy, iron and tobacco add depth and complexity as this winds down on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2050.”
Wine Advocate 97 points “Next comes 50-hectoliter botte number 88 that houses the upcoming 2015 Barolo Francia. Again, this wine will be bottled by the time you read this, with Conterno’s newest vintages hitting the market in October. What impresses most here is the supreme elegance of the wine. It speaks in hushed whispers, enunciating promises of depth, complexity and mysterious intrigue. The wine unfolds slowly, revealing new elements with each swirl of the glass. Together, these aromas build in intensity and stature to become a magnificent Barolo with a capital B. The bouquet exudes elegance and complexity that will carry it through the ages. When I tasted this wine from barrel last year, I described it as demure. One year later, the wine is bursting with confidence, character and moxie.-ML”
Giacomo Conterno Monfortino, Barolo Riserva DOCG 2013 1.5L ($2,999.95) $2,399 special, 1 magnum in stock now
Antonio Galloni 99 points “The 2013 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is brilliant, precise, focused and nuanced, with the classic sense of austerity it has always shown from barrel. In the 2013, readers will find a biting, vibrant Monfortino built along super-classic lines that includes vintages like 1996 and 1999, but the 2013 has more finesse that is the result of a the slight refinements and evolution that have taken place here over the last decade. In 2013, Roberto Conterno bottled the entirety of his Barolo production from Francia as Monfortino.”
Wine Spectator 99 points “Subtle aromas of cherry, wild herb and tobacco introduce this sleek, complex red. Cherry, strawberry, loam, iron and tobacco flavors build in intensity to an extended finish, but the texture and harmony are what define this superb Barolo. Silky, with a fine weave to the dense tannins. All the components come together on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2022 through 2050.”
Wine Advocate 98 points “I have been tasting this wine from barrel for the past two years and now finally, abracadabra, the 2013 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is safely housed in bottle. The wine was bottled in June of last year and will hit the market this upcoming October. The Barolo Francia was not produced in 2013 because Roberto Conterno diverted all fruit from that vineyard to this wine. Monfortino was not produced in 2011 or 2012, meaning that this 2013 edition follows directly after the absolutely stunning 2010 vintage (which earned a perfect 100-point score). The two vintages (2010 and 2013) are very similar, strikingly so, but the 2013 vintage registers at a slightly lower structural threshold. The tannins are slightly looser, or softer in the case of this wine. With up to six years in botte, the 2010 vintage is still crunchy and super sharp, while this wine is slightly more succulent and earthy. Some 20,000 bottles, 2,500 magnums and 400 three-liter bottles were made.-ML”
James Suckling 99 points “Warm aromas of plums, rose petals and spices with hints of sandalwood. Some tar. Full body, dense center palate with glorious fruit and a fantastic finish. Very, very polished and fine tannins. Vertical and deep. A great Monfortino. Try in 2023.”

Chateau Ste. Michelle Chardonnay

Bodegas San Roman
The Toro region of Spain has been famous for centuries. Its rich, robust Tempranillos are loaded with complexity, in part because of the dramatic temperature swings during the scorching summer days and frigid evenings in the high elevation vineyards. Despite the fame and the obvious appeal to modern day drinkers, like most Spanish regions, the wines still fly under the radar and thus are insane values. Consider the flagship eponymous wine from Bodegas San Roman. Despite the famed founding winemaker, despite the consistent high praise, despite the knife-edge balance, this wine is just $40. Try to find a bargain like that in Napa.
“I have been absolutely enchanted by this wine since I first tried it while in graduate school more than a decade ago. The combination of richness and poise was just amazing to me. The wine can be quite powerful but maintains an amazing sense of balance and terroir. Simply put, it is one of the great wines of the world.” –Dr. Owen Bargreen, Washington Wine Blog

(Maurodos) Bodegas San Roman, Toro 2013 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 93 points “(aged for two years in 75 percent French and 25 percent American oak barrels, half of them new) Inky purple. Heady cherry, dark berry, vanilla and violet pastille qualities on the oak-accented nose. At once rich and energetic; a firm spine of acidity provides lift to sweet cassis, blueberry and vanilla flavors. Closes with youthful tannic grip and impressive persistence, leaving dark berry and licorice candy notes behind.”
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2013 San Román was produced with fruit from older vineyards in Toro. In 2012 they started reducing the amount of the new oak in this wine and the change is quite noticeable. There is something leafy and floral showing elegance within the power that the place provides naturally. 2013 was quite different in Toro from Ribera del Duero, here the cooler years are a plus, as they balance the extra ripeness the place provides. In 2013 there was no rain during the harvest and the grapes were very healthy. There are some fine tannins and the profile of a more austere and transparent vintage, a mineral year. But it does have the smokey and slightly wild character of Toro. 87,000 bottles produced.”

Paolo Scavino
Barolo’s Modern-ish Master
Barolo’s Modern-ish Master
Scavino is one of the truly great estates in Barolo, a region with no shortage of famous names. Despite a recent trend towards a more traditional approach, the wines still skew modernist. Rich and powerful in their youth, their true greatness only reveals itself after time in the cellar -something that can’t be said about all of Scavino’s modernist peers. Complex and nuanced upon release, the wines are built to age.
With access to some of Barolo’s most prized vineyards, and a winemaking team that embraces the best of both modern and traditional techniques, the wines are arguably the smartest buys in Barolo today. But don’t take our word for it, Bruce Sanderson of the Wine Spectator recently offered this praise for Scavino’s remarkable wines.
“Paolo Scavino is once again one of the top producers in Barolo. At one point, Scavino was considered one of the preeminent producers of modernist Barolo, favoring barriques, exceptionally short macerations and a style that emphasized winemaking over terroir. These days, though, they’ve shed their overtly modernist ways, moving their style towards a more traditional approach.
While you aren’t going to confuse them with Mascarello or Burlotto, the current incarnation of Scavino seems to combine some of the best parts of modernism (i.e., approachable wines with rich fruit and sensual textures) with a more traditional sensibility in regards to terroir and oak flavors. 2016 was an epic year in Barolo and Scavino made some of the best wines we’ve tasted from the house.
The Paolo Scavino estate was founded in Castiglione Falletto in 1921. Enrico Scavino, the current proprietor, joined his father in 1951, and has since worked tirelessly, increasing the vineyard holdings to 74 acres. His daughters Enrica and Elisa (pictured with Enrico), who focus on sales and marketing and production, respectively, represent the 4th generation in the family business.
Enrico Scavino was one of the “Barolo Boys” of the 1980s and ’90s; the group brought international attention to Piedmont by making and promoting a more modern style of Barolo. Scavino’s first single-vineyard bottling, the Barolo Bric dël Fiasc, debuted with the 1978 vintage, and experimentation and refinement continue to this day. The wines have tipped a bit back toward the traditional side in recent years, using various barrel sizes and experimenting with vinification in wood, techniques that I find emphasize Nebbiolo’s pure fruit. “We don’t make great Nebbiolo because we use barriques or large casks,” explains Enrica. “We try to be neutral with the oak to let the grape express itself.”
The Barolo is a blend of seven parcels in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo and Seralunga d’Alba. Barolo Carobric is a contraction of its three vineyard sources: Cannubi, Rocche di Castiglione and Bric dël Fiasc. Prapò and Ravera are the newest MGAs to the range, debuting with the 2015 vintage. Don’t miss the Barolo Cannubi in the Hot Wines section of this issue.”—Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

Paolo Scavino Bricco Ambrogio, Barolo DOCG 2015 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points “An elegant style, boasting strawberry, cherry, currant and spice flavors, supported by vibrant acidity and refined tannins. Turns chewy on the finish, where eucalyptus and tar notes chime in. Best from 2022 through 2042.—B.S.”
Monica Larner – Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2015 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is Scavino’s cru from this northeastern-most vineyard in the Barolo appellation, in the village of Roddi, and comprises seven hectares of mostly Nebbiolo but also some Dolcetto and Barbera. These vines with their southeastern exposure are not protected from the elements very well, allowing for more diurnal temperature shifts. Therefore, this site always produces much fresher fruit flavors. Indeed, you get noticeably crunchy, tonic fruit here along with a more detailed aromatic portrait. The wine is more precise compared to Monvigliero, for example, which offers more dense fruit, while Bricco Ambrogio is more delicate in the mouth. These soils are gray marlstone, with some yellow veins of clay in there and some sand, whereas Monvigliero soils are far whiter in nature. A fresh Barolo like this would pair well with any fatty sausage.”
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2015 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is terrific. Bold, fruity and forward, the 2015 offers tons of immediacy, not to mention impeccable overall balance. Sweet red cherry, hard candy, spice, mint, licorice and tobacco infuse the 2015 with terrific nuance to match its radiant, supple personality. This inviting, silky Barolo has plenty to offer, including tons of immediacy.”
Importer note “The only single cru from the Roddi village dedicated to Nebbiolo for Barolo production. Made for the first time in 2002 and almost a monopole. A geeky Barolo cru to show and explore. Perfumed, generous in its expression and soft texture.”

Paolo Scavino Bricco Ambrogio, Barolo DOCG 2016 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2016 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is very pretty in 2016. Medium in body and supple, the Bricco Ambrogio captures all of the personality of the year in a mid-weight style that makes it easy to drink and enjoy young. The balance of fruit, acid and structure is just superb here. Pretty floral and spice overtones add nuance. Bricco Ambrogio is always the most accessible of the Scavino cru Barolos. The 2016 is the finest wine from this site yet.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points “From the comune or village of Roddi, the Paolo Scavino 2016 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio offers an open-knit and accessible personality. The bouquet of this wine is very distinctive, offering some cedar, spice and toasted hazelnut that you don’t get in the other Baroli in the collection from the Scavino family. Those nutty aromas cede to dark fruit, plum, spice and grilled herb. The wine is beautifully put together, showing the classic balance and energy of the vintage.”
Wine Spectator 94 points “This is velvety and inviting, the open texture setting the stage for black cherry, plum and iron flavors. Spice and tobacco elements chime in as this cruises to a long, sumptuous finish. Shows fine harmony and should be approachable earlier than some peers. Best from 2022 through 2038.”
Paolo Scavino Bric del Fiasc, Barolo DOCG 2015 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner – Wine Advocate 95+ points “From the Scavino family’s home-turf vineyard, the 2015 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc (with fruit from Castiglione Falletto) delivers structure, firmness and power. This is a classic interpretation of a historic cru, and the wine offers linear, crisp lines. Fruit from this site was fermented separately for the first time to make this wine in 1978. The family had long recognized the consistently superior quality of the fruit from this location, and they saw its special potential. Enrico Scavino told me about the rush of adrenaline and pride that washed over him when he first tasted this wine with his peers Gaja and Conterno during those Golden Years of the past and saw the enthusiasm their eyes. This is the go-to Barolo if you want to taste classic Scavino.”
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2015 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is dark and imposing on the palate, yet not quite as forbidding as it can be. A Barolo of size and heft, the 2015 has a lot to say, but it won’t be ready to drink anytime soon. Black cherry, smoke, leather, iron, licorice, menthol and graphite notes infuse the 2015 with layers of nuance to complement its brooding, sepia-toned personality nicely. The 2015 is a beguiling Barolo, but it needs cellaring.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “The sweetness from ripe plum and cherry fruit offsets the broad swath of tannins. Energetic and focused, with leather, soy, iron and tobacco accents supporting the fruit. Feels balanced, but needs time for all the elements to integrate. Better than previously reviewed. Best from 2023 through 2045. —B.S.”
Importer note “Produced from the best exposure at the top of the Fiasco Cru, this wine was first bottled as a single vineyard in 1978. Owned and farmed by the Scavino family since 1921, this vineyard demonstrates the classic Castiglion Falletto combination of elegance and power, with a density of fruit and vibrant, refined tannins.”
Paolo Scavino Carobric, Barolo DOCG 2015 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 94 points “Although often slow out of the gate, the 2015 Barolo Carobric is absolutely gorgeous and expressive today. Powerful and dense in its first impression, the 2015 also has a good bit of underlying structure that gives energy and real sense of proportion. I would prefer to give the 2015 a few years in bottle to shed some of its baby fat. There is clearly quite a bit of potential here. Dried flowers, mint, rose petal, spice and dark red/blackish fruit all open up with time in the glass. The 2015 has a bright future. I won’t be surprised if it turns out even better than this note suggests”
Monica Larner – Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2018 vintage will be the last edition made of this wine. The Scavino family lost its lease in Cannubi, and the estate wine portfolio is being redrawn as a result. The 2015 Barolo Carobric remains a blend of fruit from Rocche di Castiglione (60%), Cannubi (20%) and Bric dël Fiasc (20%). That blend has been carefully contemplated, and the absence of the Cannubi changes the formula too drastically. Cannubi adds richness and flavor to the blend, while Rocche di Castiglione with its sandy soils adds delicate mineral and light fruit nuances. Bric dël Fiasc offers both power and elegance and is the proverbial glue that keeps harmony between the two sides. This wine was first produced in 1996, and the end of an important chapter in the Scavino family legacy is upon us.”
Importer note “A three vineyard super blend of primarily Rocche di Castiglione with smaller amounts of Fiasco and Cannubi.”
Paolo Scavino Monvigliero, Barolo DOCG 2015 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points “A supple, perfumed red, with a smoky Lapsang souchong tea note underly-ing the cherry and currant flavors. Delicate and firm, showing fine balance and a vibrant finish. This is all about elegance and finesse. Best from 2021 through 2042.—B.S”
Monica Larner – Wine Advocate 94 points “The Scavino family has had access to fruit from the Monvigliero cru for almost 20 years. They have farmed a small parcel (under one hectare) since 2000, and the grapes were previously added to their “classico” Barolo blend. In 2006, Monvigliero became its own single-vineyard expression because Enrico Scavino always had a big passion for this site. The 2015 Barolo Monvigliero is a bright and beautiful wine with a strong floral signature of violets and roses that accompanies this wine from start to finish. The wine is very characteristic of Monvigliero in terms of the softness and silky nature of the tannins as well.”
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2015 Barolo Monvigliero is undoubtedly a pretty wine, even if it appears to be somewhat of a work in progress. Bright floral notes, spice and sweet red cherry/plum fruit give the Monvigliero considerable immediacy as well as appeal. Even so, my impression is that the best is yet to come for this bottling.”
Importer note “A Grand Cru from Verduno village first produced by Scavino in the 2007 vintage. The Northern most commune in Barolo, this vineyard has a very special microclimate: warm during the day and cold at night thanks to the cooling breezes coming off the Tanaro River. Always elegant and focused with great tension.”
This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!
Paolo Scavino Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2015 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner – Wine Advocate 94 points “Here is another rookie in the lineup for Paolo Scavino. The Ravera vineyard was purchased in 2015, at 2.7 hectares and about 360 meters in altitude. It is their highest vineyard and the last to be harvested every year. This east-facing parcel is never too hot, always showing cooler-climate conditions than the others, with fine tannins and a good dose of acidity. The 2015 Barolo Ravera is a very tight and and precise wine, with notes of exotic tea that follow blackberry, dried cherry and licorice. This is a great new addition to the Scavino portfolio at this time of important changes for the winery.”
Importer note “Another debut release, Scavino acquired 3 adjacent parcels totaling 2.69 hectares before the start of the 2015 growing season. A very cool site, these east facing vines planted in loose white marls are the highest amongst all of Scavino’s holdings, reaching 430 meters, and consequently the last of the estate’s crus to be harvested.”
Arriving in October:
Paolo Scavino Cannubi, Barolo DOCG 2016 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Kerin O’keefe-Wine Enthusiast 99 points “Perfumed berry, fragrant purple flowers, chopped mint and baking spice are just some of the aromas you’ll find on this drop-dead gorgeous wine. Impeccably balanced, structured, and loaded with finesse, it boasts a smooth texture, doling out juicy Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and white pepper alongside a backbone of polished tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2024–2036.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97 points “The Paolo Scavino 2016 Barolo Cannubi is another wine that should greatly interest avid collectors. It will not be produced after the 2018 vintage, but this 2016 vintage awards us with first-rate quality and precision, making for a memorable send-off. This expression from Cannubi offers tight and aromatic fruit with wild cherry, rose petal and powdered licorice root. It also shows a slightly dusty or mineral quality with finely nuanced tannins and a tapered or streamlined mouthfeel that adds to its delicate elegance. The effect here is polished with glossy intensity.”
Antonio Galloni 96 points “The 2016 Barolo Cannubi is a striking wine. Deep, rich and beautifully layered, the 2016 has it all. Rose petal, mint, star anise, blood orange and raspberry open up first, followed by a cascade of red fruit and floral notes that literally soar out of the glass. The Cannubi possesses tremendous textural resonance in a style that balances the sensuality of this site with a good deal of structure. It is also one of the wines in this lineup that was aged entirely in cask.”
Wine Spectator 96 points “A bright, elegant red, delivering pure cherry, strawberry and rose aromas and flavors, with a hint of wild herb. Though harmonious and delicate, this has a firm structure underneath, and the finish is long and resonant. The aftertaste echoes with fruit and floral notes, adding spice to the mix. Best from 2022 through 2042. 275 cases made, 100 cases imported.”
Paolo Scavino Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva, Barolo DOCG 2013 750ML ($219.95) $199 pre-arrival special
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97 points “The 2013 Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva was released in January of 2019, and once again it looks to be a top prize. Licorice and flowers dominate the bouquet, and its beautiful red fruit is generous throughout. This wine has always been a beauty and consistently has had a high price tag to reflect that quality, going back to the first vintages of the 1990s. It has regularly sold for about $200 every year for the last decade. These vines are old, some of them very old (reaching the ripe age of 60 years old in 1990s, when many of them were replanted with carefully selected clones), producing an elegance and concentration that brings intensity and a high standard of aromas. This Barolo without a doubt shows its pedigree and a quality of noble perfumes that demonstrate characteristics of the greatest Nebbiolo vintages, all delivered with excellent concentration. The magic lingers on the palate, right up to the finish.”
James Suckling 95 points “Aromas of white truffles and dried red cherries here with an earthy nuance that makes for a complex and compelling nose. The palate has a deep and dense shape and delivers a wide array of rich cherry and plum flavors. Some handy spice here, too. Drink or hold.”
