A Wine Spectator Top 100 Value Wine
Tasca d’Almerita’s Ghiaia Nera has been a staff favorite since it arrived in the spring. Made with Nerello Mascalese, a native Sicilian grape that is quickly developing a cult-like following, it has been one of the staff’s go-to reds for pairing with both Italian and Mediterranean food. So it came as no surprise when Wine Spectator recently included it on its list of Top 100 Value Wines of 2020.
In Stock Now:

Caiarossa ‘Pergolaia’ Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2016 750ML ($29.95) $26 special, 19 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points “Flavors of black cherry and blackberry stand up to the dense tannins in this fresh, deep and intense red, but this is equally about the vibrant acidity driving the fruit, wild herb nuances and spice-infused aftertaste. Sangiovese with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2022 through 2040. 4,700 cases made, 1,200 cases imported.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 92 points “Mostly Sangiovese with the other 30% composed of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Pergolaia is all about matching grapes to soils, a tribute to Tuscany from a French-owned estate better known for its international approach. This vintage has slightly less Sangiovese than usual in order to create a more accessible wine, with more freshness and juiciness. It’s almost crunchy in texture, a full-bodied red that covers the whole mouth. The aging is spread out evenly between botte and tonneaux, as they reserved the big wood for the more delicate Sangiovese grape. The fruit here shows perfect ripeness with lots of primary intensity and freshness. It’s a versatile red to match with all kinds of pastas and meats. It’s ready to open now or to age for just a few more years.”

“Lithe, supple, and open for business”
Podere Le Boncie Cinque – 5 Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2018 750ML ($49.95) Was $39, Now $33, 36+ bottles in stock now
Rosenthal Wine note “Giovanna calls her second wine “Cinque,” a dual reference to the five grape varieties planted at Le Boncie and to the Italian grading system, in which a 5 (out of 10) constitutes not quite passing (Giovanna is atypically and charmingly self-effacing for a Tuscan). Part comes from the non-gobelet-trained vines of her original three-hectare farm, and another part from a recently acquired 1.3-hectare parcel called “Chiesa Monte,” three kilometers from Le Boncie and just outside the limit of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Giovanna ferments “Cinque” in a combination of cement and steel, with a slightly briefer maceration than “Le Trame,” and ages it in large botti for roughly one year less than the flagship wine. The result is slightly less structured and gentler, but still deeply expressive of both the warm generosity of Castelnuovo Berardenga and of Giovanna’s caressingly pure style. 2018 was a rainy and relatively tough growing season, but one would never know if from this wine, which is lithe, supple, and open for business even at this youthful stage.”
Polished and intense
Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2015 750ML ($69.95) Was $49, Now $46.50, 36+ bottles in stock now
James Suckling 97 points “Wonderful aromos of flowers, plums, terracotta and white pepper. Intense, yet ever so subtle. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins, and a long and intense finish. Shows excellent length. Drink after 2021.”
Antonio Galloni 94 points “Good deep red. Complex aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, graphite, mocha, and mint. Focused and suave with very attractive sweetness and standout purity to its flavors of red berries and candied flowers. Finishes with polished tannins and outstanding length.”
Wine Spectator 93 points “Tightly wound, with tart cherry, graphite, earth and cigar box flavors, aligned to an edge of firm tannins. Flirts with rusticity, yet remains tense and smoldering. Should gain more length as it opens. Best from 2023 through 2039.”

James Suckling 95 points “There’s a beautiful interplay between bright, primary florals, such as rose petals and tulips and dust, hay bale and dried raspberries. The palate suggests a ripe, powerful persona with chewy, juicy tannins and a fine line of pretty acidity. Best ever. Drink in 2022.”

La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2013 750ML ($69.95) Was $56, Now $49, 36+ bottles in stock now
James Suckling 93 points “Aromas of blackberry and cherry with flowers. Smoky. Hot stone. Medium to full body, firm and fresh tannins and a delicious finish. Beautiful now but needs a year or two to soften.”
Wine Spectator 92 points “Starts out with cherry, iron and tobacco flavors, before firming up, with a solid structure. A kernel of fruit holds steady as this red unfolds on the lingering finish. Best from 2022 through 2036. 2,200 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.”

Eric Guido-Vinous 92 points “Deep bright red-ruby. Oriental spices and botanical herbs complicate rich red fruit and balsamic oil aromas and flavors. Rich, ripe and suave, with a glyceral mouthfeel and strong hints of bitter herbs to the repeating ripe red cherry notes on the long thick, mouthcoating back end. A very good showing for 2014.”

“Such a pretty wine”
Il Paradiso di Frassina Moz Art, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015 750ML ($69.95) Was $54.50, Now $45, 36 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 91 points “Here I’m finding a dusty and understated display of dried cherries, red florals, and crushed stone, with hints of leather and animal musk. On the palate, soft textures and cooling acids make for a lifted display, carrying pretty strawberry and floral tones, backed by saline-minerals which seem to slowly evolve into a coating of fine tannin. The finish is long and slightly tart, resonating on brisk acids and minerals, with saturating red berry and rosy florals slowly fading. Such a pretty wine.”
Kerin O’keefe-Wine Enthusiast 91 points “Aromas of oak-driven spice, toasted notes and mature dark-skinned berry take center stage along with a whiff of fragrant purple flower. Reflecting the nose, the taut linear palate features raspberry compote, vanilla, coconut and a hint of star anise alongside polished tannins.”
A champion of Chianti’s Gran Selezione Designation
Castello di Ama Vigneto La Casuccia, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2016 750ML ($219.95) Was $189, Now $179, 18 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 97 points “The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto La Casuccia is rich, sensual and inviting, as it so often is. The addition of Merlot to Sangiovese yields a Chianti Classico built on textural resonance, with silky tannins, soft curves and tons of sheer allure. The 2016 won’t be ready to drink anytime soon, but it is unquestionably a great wine in the making. Succulent dark cherry, red plum, menthol, licorice, cloves and new oak infuse the creamy, voluptuous finish.”
Kerin O’keefe-Wine Enthusiast 97 points “Mature black-skinned berry, rose, tilled soil and a balsamic whiff of eucalyptus shape the nose. The bright, elegant palate has energy, tension and depth, delivering ripe wild cherry, red plum, licorice and crushed botanical herb. Taut, fine-grained tannins lend polished support while fresh acidity keeps it balanced. A gorgeous wine. Drink through 2031.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 points “From the small vineyard facing Castello di Ama from the north, the 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto la Casuccia shows a dark and hearty side with rich fruit that flows steadily from the bouquet. Like the other new releases from this iconic estate, this wine shows a pretty earthy note that is particularly well defined and fine-tuned in this vintage. The fruit is broad, thick and horizontal. This is a Sangiovese painted with broad brush strokes. It’ll stand another decade or two, or open it sooner with a pappardelle al cinghiale.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “This aromatic Chianti Classico features violet, black cherry, leather, earth and spice flavors. A laser of bracing acidity and muscular tannins runs underneath. The balance tips toward the tannins today, but put this in your cellar for another few years. Sleek and very long. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2023 through 2042. 315 cases made, 40 cases imported.”
James Suckling 95 points “A dense and layered red with spice and berry character. Medium to full body. Blueberry, wet-earth and walnut undertones. Iodine. Shows structure and intensity. Drink in 2020 and onwards.”

Extroverted yet refreshing
Castello di Ama ‘San Lorenzo’, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2014 750ML ($59.95) Was $39, Now $33, 36+ bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 93+ points “The 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo flaunts its importance. It boasts confidence and an outward-looking personality that comes as a refreshing surprise. Like all Gran Selezione wines, it is released 30 months after January 1st following the harvest. That means it still has a few more months to go before it hits the market. This expression of Sangiovese shows depth and power with ripe fruit tones of cherry and forest berry. Like many of the other high profile wines I preview-tasted from the difficult 2014 vintage, I am delighted and surprised by the elegant and soft nature of the mature tannins. The wine’s finish offers bright freshness with layers of dark fruit, wet earth and forest floor.”
Wine Enthusiast 93 points “Aromas of exotic spice, pipe tobacco, woodland berry and a whiff of French oak take center stage on this fragrant, elegant red. The racy, ethereal palate delivers tart red cherry, tart pomegranate, cinnamon and vanilla framed in taut fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. Drink 2019–2026.”
James Suckling 93 points “This is extremely tangy with plenty of chocolate and lemon character and hints of cedar, too. Medium body, bright acidity and chocolatey aftertaste. Very refined and well-crafted for a 2014. Drink now.”

“Lovely fruit and terrific balance”
Barone Ricasoli ‘Brolio’, Chianti Classico DOCG 2015 750ML ($29.95) Was $18, Now $16, 36+ bottles in stock now
James Suckling 91 points “A ripe and juicy wine with plum and dried cherry character. Hints of lemon rind. Medium body, delicate tannins and a fruity finish. Drink now.”
Antonio Galloni 90 points “The 2015 Chianti Classico Brolio is a very pretty, gracious wine with lovely fruit purity and terrific balance. Sweet raspberry and floral notes give the wine freshness and aromatic lift. Soft, open-knit and silky, the 2015 has much to offer. I would prefer to drink it sooner rather later. Dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon complement the Sangiovese nicely.”
Wine Spectator 90 points “An elegant, vibrant red, this exhibits floral, cherry and strawberry flavors that mesh nicely with the harmonious profile. The fine length echoes the fruit. Drink now through 2024. 60,900 cases made.”

“Immensely rewarding”
Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 2017 750ML ($41.95) Was $35.50, Now $33, 36+ bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Castello di Volpaia is an immensely rewarding, inviting wine. Juicy and racy, with no hard edges, the Riserva captures the allure of this warm, dry year. There is plenty to like in the 2017, starting with its depth and volume, I won’t be surprised if the Riserva turns out to be even better than this note suggests. Sweet red fruit, cedar and blood orange give the 2017 striking aromatic intensity and lift.”
Importer Note “The Chianti Classico Riserva has a ruby-red hue with a trace of garnet. The nose is elegant, displaying hints of spice and fruit. This a well-structured wine with smooth tannins and a long finish. Barrel Aging: 24 months in oak casks (combination of Slovenian and French) and minimum 3 months in bottle. Varietal Composition: 100% Sangiovese. A record year for heat and drought throughout the growing season. This condition presented extremes which began early bud break in the vineyard, followed by a spring frost over late April. The frost affected the lower portions of the Volpaia estate. Spring and summer months were dry with higher than average temperatures. Rainfall in mid-September helped the grapes achieve complete ripeness of tannins and other phenolic compounds despite low yields.”

Chézeaux’s 2017 Burgundies
“From the moment we encountered Chézeaux’s 2017s, shortly after they completed malolactic fermentation, we knew this was a special, potentially career-making collection. The wines, which had been neither racked nor sulfured at that point, raised goosebumps with their purity of fruit, their startling transmission of site character, and their haunting equilibrium; these are wines into which one can peer deeply. From a relatively problem-free growing season whose warmth expressed itself in the fruit much differently than the similarly solar 2015 and 2016, the 2017s “found their structure over some élevage,” Jérôme remarks, calling it a “very Pinot” vintage… These 2017s are uniformly ultra-fine and lifted, with remarkably well rendered and supple tannins, and an underlying mineral freshness, and they are quite accessible at this youthful stage—even the typically colossally stern Clos de Vougeot—though their impeccable balance will allow them to develop beautifully. Worth emphasizing is the almost shockingly sane pricing in effect at this domaine, which makes these wines irresistible for the prudent collector, especially given their current level of quality.” –Neal Rosenthal
Jérôme Chézeaux makes wines that epitomize our favorite sort of Burgundy. Age-worthy, fine and built on a core of minerality, but priced a tier below what the wines deliver. Make no mistake about it—Chézeaux makes wines that can be poured with the finest producers in Nuits, but cost 25% less. In a vintage like 2017 he really shines, as the warm year buttresses his mineral style with a bit broader shoulders and more fruit. The three Premier Cru Nuits-St. George wines are of particular note—they’re incredible values and are only slightly more expensive than some producer’s village bottlings.
Newly Arrived:
Jérôme Chézeaux Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($99.95) $85 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Importer note “Nuits-Saint-Georges famously possesses no grand cru vineyards, but Les Vaucrains is widely considered one in all but name. Always the most complete of Chézeaux’s premier crus, Vaucrains rumbles with tension—an authoritative wine that exudes an impression of depth and solidity. Here, the fruit, mineral, and savory elements bind together more tightly, more seamlessly. Jérôme owns just over a quarter-hectare of east-facing vines in Vaucrains, and his conservative oak regimen—never more than one-third of the barrels are new—highlights the power of the terroir itself.”

Jérôme Chézeaux Nuits-Saint-Georges Rue de Chaux Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($89.95) $75 special, 8 bottles in stock now
Importer note “Located almost dead-center in the appellation, Rue de Chaux is perhaps the most quintessentially “Nuits-Saint-Georges” among Chézeaux’s premier crus. Jérôme owns a mere 0.29 hectares in this steep, topsoil-deficient vineyard, and his ever-elegant touch yields a wine of both grace and power. Darkly fruited, dense, and slightly brooding, it also offers an enchanting savory-spicy perfume.”

Jérôme Chézeaux Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Prulieres Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($99.95) $79 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Importer note “The smallest-production premier cru in Chézeaux’s cellar, Les Pruliers lies near the border of Nuits-Saint-Georges and Premeaux-Prissey in the southern part of the appellation. Jérôme works a mere tenth of a hectare here—a parcel of extremely old vines that produce a wine of warmth and generosity. More full-bodied than the Rue de Chaux above, its fruit is pitched toward the black, and, while not heavy-handed in the slightest, it emphasizes robustness over sleekness.”

Jérôme Chézeaux Vosne-Romanée Chaumes Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 7 bottles in stock now
Importer note “Les Chaumes lies at the southern edge of Vosne-Romanée, immediately below the hallowed premier crus Aux Malconsorts and La Tache on a vein of limestone and marl. Chézeaux owns four-tenths of a hectare here, producing a wine that marries the exotic spice and succulent fruit of Vosne-Romanée with the mineral force of Nuits-Saint-Georges in ravishing fashion.”
Jérôme Chézeaux Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Charbonnières Vieilles Vignes 2017 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Importer note “With the 2011 vintage, and with our encouragement, Jérôme began separating out his oldest villages-level parcel—a 0.67-hectare holding of 80-year-old vines in Les Charbonnières, situated just below the premier cru Aux Corvées on the slope in the appellation’s southern sector. Boasting true old-vines power, this is always thicker-fruited and more exuberantly spicy than its counterpart above, with greater length. Its lusciousness, however, does nothing to mask the underlying complexity that sets this cuvée apart.”

Jérôme Chézeaux Nuits-Saint-Georges 2017 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 35 bottles in stock now
Importer note “Chézeaux’s holdings of villages-level Nuits-Saint-Georges encompass 3.3 hectares spread throughout the appellation, with a significant proportion from the vineyards of Aux Saint Julien and Chaliots. In keeping with the spirit of the underlying terroir, this is wilder in character than the Vosne-Romanée, marked by notes of iron, and with a rambunctious bent to its tannins. Never deficient in fruit, it offers plenty of earth and sous-bois elements as well, all in a driving fashion.”

Hundred Suns Super Moon Syrah Vidon Vineyard, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($49.95) $29 special
Winery note “The Super Moon is a rare and beautiful lunar event that occurs when the full moon coincides with the moon’s closest approach to Earth in its orbit, making the moon seem brighter and more close than usual. It felt an appropriate name for a wine that could only have come to being in this particular vintage. Our Super Moon Syrah was grown on a warm site for the Willamette Valley during a classic, cool Oregon vintage. It was fermented 100% whole cluster in a sealed tank. On the 12th day we opened the tank and foot-stomped the clusters one time before pressing. The resulting wine is initially shy with savory tones of black pepper and beef bouillon, but after time the wine opens to offer juicy pomegranate & cranberry with a light, refreshing palate surprising for Syrah.”

Hundred Suns ‘Tualatin Estate’ Gamay Noir, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($39.95) $29 special
Winery note “Vintage & Vinification: A cool and lengthy growing season gave us wines of modest alcohol and incredible flavor. Once harvested our Gamay was divided into three lots. The first 100% de-stemmed, the second 50% whole cluster and the third 100% whole cluster Carbonic. Aged in a combination of Amphora and neutral oak for 11 months. This bottling is filled with juicy red fruit, crunchy textures and refined acidity. Bottled Unfined and Unfiltered. Vineyard: This historic estate was established in the early 1970s by pioneer Bill Fuller. Our parcel of Gamay (in fact, the only gamay planted at the site) came from a hidden corner of the vineyard and was uncovered by our friend, Evan Martin, who offered us a one-acre piece of this amazing site planted on marine sedimentary soils.”

Hundred Suns ‘Elephant Mtn. Vineyard’ Grenache, Yakima Valley 2018 750ML ($49.95) $35 special
Winery note “The Grenache was left 100% whole cluster in a sealed tank for 20 days. Once opened, the fully intact grapes were pressed and fermentation was completed with native yeast. The wine then aged in a terracotta amphora for 12 months until it was transferred to neutral oak, where it aged for five additional months. This yielded a wine with layers of decadent strawberry and raspberry fruit accented with cinnamon. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.”

Beaux Frères ‘The Beaux Frères Vineyard’ Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2018 750ML ($109.95) $85 special
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 95 points “Brilliant ruby. Intense red and blue fruit, floral and spice qualities on the highly perfumed nose, along with hints of cola and licorice. Juicy and precise, offering concentrated raspberry, boysenberry and floral pastille flavors that take on a five-spice-powder nuance with air. Plays power off delicacy with a sure hand and finishes extremely long and silky, with polished tannins framing lingering red fruit and candied rose notes. 45% new oak.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “A wine of presence and expression, impeccably structured yet elegantly layered, with evocative raspberry, rose petal and brown baking spice notes that pick up richness and tension toward fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2029. 3,088 cases made.”
James Suckling 96 points “This is a trademark, deeply rich impression with an unctuous, violet-flower layer, together with blueberries, cherries and sweetly toasty woody spices, as well as forest wood and fresh, leafy and sappy nuances. The palate has a very succulent, fresh and lithe, almost tangy feel, delivering such succulent, mouthwatering energy at the finish. Ready now, but better from 2024.”
Seriously epic, Northern-Rhône-inspired Syrah that happens to be for a good cause
Loop de Loop Syrah, Columbia Gorge 2019 750ML ($39.95) $29 special
Winery note “Benefiting NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. Intensely aromatic, this is a special clone of Northern Rhône Syrah. 100% whole cluster and co-fermented with our Riesling instead of the traditional co-fermentation with viognier. We expect this will not last long as it has generated a very excited response from our friends who have barrel tasted it with us. We wish we had more of it.”

Loop de Loop Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special
Winery note “This is a blend of the Four Winds Vineyard (high altitude Coast Range), the Johan Vineyard (VanDuzer AVA with calcareous sedimentary soils) and the Symonette Vineyard (volcanic Eola-Amity Hills AVA). This blend represents our stylistic approach to Northern Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. As with all our wines, this it is fermented with ambient wild yeast. The fruit from each vineyard is cared for with intention in the cellar and then blended before bottling 10 months later.”

Hope Well Pinot Noir, Eola Amity Hills 2019 750ML ($99.95) $75 special
Mimi Casteel note “However benignly we began the growing season in 2019, unprecedented humidity through July and August kept us on our toes until September, when rains paused the harvest trajectory. We waited. This is our kind of year, when the pressure is high and everything is on the line. These are the years that define our intent. We were rewarded for gutting out the rains by a dry and cool spell that brought a beautiful array of flavor and aroma that peak in ‘cool’ harvests, when we easily pass 110 days after flowering and still have green leaves and time to spare. The dawn of the 2019 harvest was greeted by the shouts and smiles of a group of remarkable people I’ve known since I was a child. The crew that has worked with my family through the decades, also works with me at Hope Well. The work I am able to do because they belong here means everything to the mission of this place. At Hope Well I am asking them to take a journey with me and this place. To take that walk I cannot just ask them to go out and do a particular job. I need them to understand the reason everything looks so different here. I need them to understand that our work is always toward the goal of repairing a relationship with this land. I need them to see how everything fits together. As we trampled out this vintage together, I was nevermore grateful for the system that my family has fought to maintain for more than twenty years, to provide full-time work, benefits, and proper working conditions, even as the world turns away from any permanent labor model. There is real levity in the vines here. We do serious work with great joy in our hearts.”

Cameron Winery Clos Electrique Blanc, Dundee Hills 2017 1.5L ($219.95) $179 special, 2 magnums in stock now
VinopolNote: The Clos Electrique is Cameron’s estate vineyard, named after the electric deer fence that surrounds it. This is planted to a mix of clones and is vinified traditionally—no racking and all in older barrels. This is crisp and coiled, with distinct minerality and a lot of power in a lithe frame. Like most vintages of the Electrique Blanc, this is quite good now but will be stellar in a few years.

Cameron Winery ‘Abbey Ridge’ Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2017 1.5L ($199.95) $179 special, 2 magnums in stock now
Winery note “The 2017 Abbey Ridge Pinot noir has aromas of cherry, pomegranate, cranberry and spiced oranges mingling with straw, ginger and as always rose petals. A higher percentage of Pommard in this year’s blend introduces flavors of cracked pepper, black olive and salumi. The front to back of the palate is seamless, with soft tannins, bright lively acidity, a long lingering finish and perfect moderate alcohol of 12.8%. At over 40 years of age, Abbey Ridge is one of the oldest and best vineyards in the state of Oregon.”
VinopolNote: Abbey Ridge is one of the most hallowed sites in the Willamette Valley. Planted in 1975, the Pinot Noir here is own rooted and at one of the highest elevations in the Dundee Hills. The elevation and classic Jory soils give the wine an intense personality—high toned, elegant and tensile, with good power and a strong voice. This bottling has been one of the defining Oregon Pinots since John Paul started making it.

Cameron Winery Clos Electrique Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2016 1.5L ($219.95) $189 special, 2 magnums in stock now
Grapelive 96 points “The monopole ‘Clos Electrique’ Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir has to be one of Oregon’s most iconic wines and John Paul, Cameron’s winemaker, has made an epic version in 2016. I mean god help the French if this wine ever got into a blind tasting versus some of the top Grand Cru Burgundies, because this stuff will blow their minds! The original Pinot Noir clones at this special Dundee Hills site were planted on their own roots in 1984 and over the years, Paul has added new vines that were grafted onto American root stock. This vintage is heavenly deep in color with dark garnet red hues and core of opaqueness. This stuff looks the part and tastes even better with a stunning range of fruit, earth, spice and mineral tones on the concentrated medium full palate. As warm, ripe and dense as the year was, Cameron’s Clos Electrique, named after the vineyard’s ring of electric fencing to keep marauding deer out of the grapes, has a sublime sense of balance, and refined low natural alcohol at a surprising 13.2%, but with a powerful mouth feel and unbelievable length, this is ultra-serious stuff that rivals Dujac, Meo-Camuzet and Rousseau! … To ensure real terroir, Clos Electrique is farmed organically and without irrigation. Cameron use only elemental sulfur during the growing season to prevent growth of powdery mildew and use copper hydroxide and leaf removal in the vicinity of grape clusters to inhibit botrytis. Insect pests are kept at bay by cultivation of predatory insects with an integrated cover crop. This site is thought of as one of the warm zones, but John Paul’s wines are full of energy and remarkably fresh and age worthy, and this cuvée is one of the Willamette Valley greatest wines. It is a bucket list Pinot, no question.”

Jean-Francois Mérieau ‘Les Bulles de Génie’ Rosé, Touraine NV 750ML ($21.95) $18 special
Importer note “The was a time when growers didn’t talk about their Pineau d’Aunis much less brag about their old vines of it. That was when much of this distinctive black cherry and peppery-flavored wine was blended away into generic sparkling wines or made into insipid sweet rosé. Jean François Mérieau treats his Pineau d’Aunis with respect and makes a delicious dry rosé, La Rosée, as well as a sparkling wine from his 60+ year old vines of this rediscovered variety. He adds a touch of Grolleau Gris to the final blend and always bottles the Bulles de Génie without any dosage.”
Domaine Claude Riffault Sancerre Les Boucauds, Loire 2019 750ML ($34.95) $29 special
Importer note ” Sourced from several plots all situated in the lieu-dit of Les Boucauds, this cuvée employs close to 50% of the Sauvignon Blanc planted on the estate. Entirely from terres blanches soils – marls and clays over Kimmeridgian limestone – this wine represents a pure expression of this site as well as the deft winemaking of Stéphane Riffault.”

Zanotto Col Fondo Di Collina, Veneto 2018 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special
Winery note “A slightly sparkling, natural, unfiltered white wine. The second fermentation takes place once a year around Easter. Pale yellow with greenish hues. The aroma recalls toasted bread crust with delicate notes of apple and citrus. On the palate, the wine is dry, complex and pleasant with its typical notes of yeast and fruit. Lightly salty and very mineral on the finish. Can be served clear by leaving the lees deposited or slightly opaque, with a slight shake of the bottle for a more rustic, decisive flavour.”

Zanotto ‘ZB’ Conegliano-Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Brut DOCG 2018 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special
Winery note “A no residual sugar Prosecco, expressive, with cutting acidity. Produced with 100% glera grapes from a vineyard at 370 meters above sea level. This wine hails from a local winemaking tradition, made with little added sugar. The resulting spumante is decidedly dry. The fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, and the second, in autoclave according to the Marinotti method for 90-100 days. A subtle, elegant perlage, zesty notes of lemon, white flowers and bread crusts. Sustained acidity, length and persistence. A Conegliano-Valdobbiadene that can almost be described as extreme.”
Cascina delle Rose Barbera d’Alba, Piedmont 2018 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
“Here is a comparably food-friendly red wine to pair with simple roast meats or risotto with wild mushrooms. The Cascina delle Rose 2018 Barbera d’Alba is an easier wine when contrasted with the Barbera d’Alba Superiore Donna Elena from 2017 that I also tasted in this report. Yet this wine does not show that jammy ripeness that you get in the Superiore and ultimately shows more balance as a result. There is some softness with dried blackberry and Morello cherry, but the cooler 2018 vintage manages those aromas with more precision and a softer touch. Some 4,500 bottles were released.” –Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Its colour is bright ruby red with violet hues, crisp on the palate, delicate scent of wild rose and violet, cherry, red fruits and gooseberry, pleasant wine, which is the fruit pulp. Elegant notes ethereal, sensation of spices: cinnamon and cloves of carnation. Good structure acid, silky tannins and lovely aromatic persistence. Sassicaia is a wine that needs no introduction. The original Super Tuscan, it’s one of the few truly blue-chip collectible wines from Italy. The 2017 version is richer and more powerful than usual, the result of a warm, dry growing season. It reminds us of other great warm-year Sassicaias like 2007 and 2009. Like those two wines, it’s likely to disappear quickly, especially since there are only twenty four bottles to go around.
Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Bolgheri, Tuscany 2017 750ML ($279.95) $225 special, only 4 bottles available!
Wine Enthusiast 97 points “Cellar Selection. Aromas of exotic spice, baked plum and French oak mingle with camphor and blue flower on the nose. This boasts extraordinary elegance and freshness despite the hot vintage, delivering flavors of juicy Marasca cherry, spiced blueberry, tobacco and licorice. Velvety, fine-grained tannins provide support while coffee and crushed mint linger on the finish. Drink 2022–2032.”
James Suckling 96 points “The balance and beauty to this is impressive, offering sweet, ripe currants and flowers with some crushed-stone and dry-earth undertones. Full-bodied with soft, polished tannins and a long, creamy-textured finish. It’s polished, yet concentrated. Better after 2022, but already very seductive.”
Antonio Galloni 93-96 points “The 2017 Sassicaia is dark, sensual and rich, which is a good thing, as the tannins – the result of a warm, dry year in which phenolic ripening was difficult to fully reach – are also quite powerful. I tasted the 2017 from an approximate blend from barrel, where the wines are still aging in separate lots. It will be interesting to see where things end up once the wine is in bottle.”
G.D. Vajra Bricco delle Viole, Barolo DOCG 2016 3L ($499.95) $419 special, 2 double-magnums available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 98 points “From the Bricco delle Viole cru, or the vineyard most strongly associated with this historic estate, this is a versatile or “evergreen” wine that always delivers consistent results. The G.D. Vajra 2016 Barolo Bricco delle Viole sees fruit from a seven-hectare vineyard with high exposures positioned at 400 to 480 meters above sea level. This site shows characteristic Tortonian-era soils classified as Sant’Agata marl with fossils. These soils have an enormous capacity to regulate the ripening process, resulting in the longer growing seasons relished by the Nebbiolo grape. In a word, the profile here is classic. You get delicate fruit tones and wild rose with camphor ash, licorice and tar. The wine is beautifully harmonious and ethereal. Some 15,000 bottles are hitting the market now.
Antonio Galloni 97 points “The 2016 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is going to need a few years to emerge, but it has all the qualities to develop into a truly special wine. Dark red/purplish fruit, hard candy, mint, lavender and sweet spice give the 2016 striking inner perfume. On the palate, the 2016 is a tightly wound, classically austere Barolo that will especially delight readers with traditionally leaning palates. In this late-ripening vintage, there is a great balance of structure, aromatics and mid-palate sweetness. I absolutely loved it.”
Wine Spectator 96 points “Mint and cut grass aromas give way to cherry, black currant and raspberry fruit in this juicy red. Tar, tobacco and eucalyptus accents add depth as this builds to a long, gripping finish. Shows fine balance and length. Best from 2023 through 2046.”

G.D. Vajra Albe, Barolo DOCG 2016 3L ($299.95) $249 special, 2 double-magnums available
Wine Spectator 94 points “Elegant and expressive, this red evokes cherry, raspberry and floral notes, aligned to a refined structure. This is balanced and leaves an aftertaste of fruit, tobacco and iron. Best from 2023 through 2043.”
Kerin O’Keefe-Wine Enthusiast 94 points “Aromas of woodland berry, new leather, camphor and pressed rose waft out of the glass. Juicy and delicious, the chewy palate doles out succulent Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry and white pepper. Polished tannins and fresh acidity give it an immediate appeal but this also offers several years of drinking pleasure. Drink through 2028. Editor’s choice. – Kerin O’Keefe”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points “If you were to consider the entire portfolio of wines made in the Barolo appellation, this wine always stands in its own little corner. Albe is a brand on its own, and it represents one of the most versatile, accessible and well-priced Baroli to emerge from the appellation. The G.D. Vajra 2016 Barolo Albe sets off on the right foot, offering forthcoming intensity with forest fruit, wild cherry, crushed stone and blue flowers. Winemaking is straightforward in stainless steel, and the wine finishes in Slavonian oak casks. Some 40,000 bottles are hitting the market now.
Cavallotto Bricco Boschis, Barolo DOCG 2016 750ML ($89.95) $75 special
Kerin O’Keefe-Wine Enthusiast 99 points “Aromas of woodland berry, underbrush, hazelnut and camphor form the nose along with a whiff of rose petal on this captivating, delicious wine. The full-bodied structured palate is still young and primary but already shows raspberry compote, ripe Marasca cherry, star anise, tobacco and the barest hint of game. Tightly knit noble tannins and fresh acidity provide the firm frame and impart serious aging potential. Hold for even more complexity. Drink 2026–2056.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 98 points “All of these wines from Cavallotto deliver a very floral and perfumed subtext that gives lift and delicate buoyancy to the overall bouquet. This is the Castiglione Falletto magic that shows so well in this classic vintage. The 2016 Barolo Bricco Boschis offers dried cherry, sandalwood, bramble and forest floor. The wine reveals a slightly wild and untamed character that adds to its interest and personality. Overall, this is an elegant wine with a streamlined and elegant finish. The aromas are focused and bright. I can’t wait to taste the Riserva expression from this site when it is released in three years’ time.”

Balanced and lacy in texture, with a lingering, spiced finish. Drink now through 2022. 2,200 cases imported.”
Decanter 91 points “[Reviewed Oct 2019] Described by Drappier as ‘almost a blanc de noirs’, this Pinot Noir-dominant wine sourced from the Côte des Bar is the house’s calling card. 5% of the cuvée is matured in barrels for a year for added complexity and texture, and it’s bottled unfiltered with a fairly low dosage of 7g/l. There are some melon and apple scents on the nose along with a splash of red fruits, while the palate is intense, with notes of apple, quince and grape wrapped in a red-fruit veil. It’s full-bodied and long, with a lovely texture from the red wine tannins and oak-matured portion.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 90 points “[Reviewed Apr 2020] Disgorged in June 2019, the latest rendition of Drappier’s NV Brut Carte d’Or is showing well, bursting with pretty aromas of peach, honeyed orchard fruit and white flowers. Chartogne-Taillet Les Couarres Extra Brut, Champagne 2015 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 15 bottles in stock now
John Gilman 92+ points “Alexandre Chartogne’s 2015 Les Couarres is composed entirely of pinot noir. He barrel ferments the vins clairs for this wine and gave them a bit of extra aging in the cellar prior to bottling them up for secondary fermentation in July of 2016. It aged four years sur latte prior to disgorgement in June of 2020 and finished with a dosage of “approximately” six grams per liter. The wine delivers a superb bouquet of apple, white peach, a touch of hazelnut, fresh-baked bread, a fine base of soil tones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and complex, with a bit of oak influence showing up on the backend, a fine core, lovely soil signature, refined mousse and a long, classy finish. This is certainly quite drinkable today, but the bit of palate oakiness it shows today might be a good reason to give it a few years in the cellar, just to allow this element to integrate as well on the palate as it already has on the nose. 2023-2055.”

William Kelley-Wine Advocate 94 points “Disgorged in May 2018 with seven grams per liter dosage, Vilmart’s new 2011 Brut Coeur de Cuvée is showing beautifully, offering up an expressive bouquet of crisp green pear, yellow apple, dried white flowers, English walnuts and spices. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly fleshy and nicely concentrated, it’s a fine-boned, precise rendition of this cuvée, built around ripe but racy acids and complemented by a pinpoint mousse. Vilmart is the sort of grower that succeeds in vintages such as 2011, and this wine met my expectations.”
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2011 Coeur de Cuvée is gorgeous, especially within the context of the year. Translucent and airy, the 2011 is a Champagne of real elegance. Sage, mint, dried flowers, orchard fruit and lemon peel all grace this super-expressive and pretty Champagne. These 60-year-old vines handled the challenges of 2011 well. Harvest took place in August, which after 2003 and 2007, is not as freakishly unusual as it would have been a generation ago. The 2011 is undoubtedly terrific. Even so, I would not push my luck on aging given the inherent fragility of the year. Dosage is 7 grams per liter.”

Hébrart ‘Rive Gauche Rive Droite’ Grand Cru Extra Brut, Champagne 2013 750ML ($149.95) $125 special, 16 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2013 Brut Rive Gauche-Rive Droite Grand Cru is another superb wine in this range from Hébrart. Ample and creamy, the 2013 possesses tremendous depth from start to finish. The first signs of aromatic nuance are starting to appear, which makes this Brut Rive Gauche-Rive Droite Grand Cru a very complete Champagne to enjoy now and over the next handful of years. Rive Gauche-Rive Droite is a blend of equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Unlike the other wines in the range, it is vinified in oak, which adds quite a bit of texture. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter.” [Disgorgement may not match review]
John Gilman 92 points “The 2013 “Rive Gauche-Rive Droit” Brut Millésime from Jean-Paul Hébrart is a fiftyfifty blend of pinot noir and chardonnay, with all of the grapes hailing from grand cru vineyards. The pinot noir comes from Aÿ and the chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs villages of Oiry, Avize and Chouilly. The vins clairs are barrel-fermented for this cuvée and aged in cask prior to bottling up for the secondary fermentation. The wine spent five years aging sur latte and was disgorged in April of 2019 and finished with a dosage of 4.5 grams per liter. The wine offers up a superb bouquet of white peach, apple, a fine base of soil, fresh-baked bread, a touch of oak influence and a gently smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and very elegant in profile, with a fine core of fruit, impressive mineral drive and grip, refined mousse and a long, zesty and complex finish. This is still youthful, but is so impeccably balanced that it is already very easy to drink- though it is bound to further improve with cellaring. Fine juice. 2020-2045.”
