Popular Chateauneuf-du-Papes

Blood of Jupiter

Centuries ago in the city of Santarcangelo di Romagna, an illustrious Bishop entered a convent. Honored to have such an honorable guest, the Franciscan Friars prepared a grand banquet full of good faith and free flowing wine. When the Bishop was handed a glass, he exclaimed his satisfaction, begging to know what the wine was called. At the time, there was no name. Thinking quickly, one monk replied “Blood of Jupiter”, inspired by the wines deep color, as red as blood, and the name of the hill the monastery was built upon, Monte Giove (Jupiter Mountain). This is the legend of Sangiovese.

The significance of Sangiovese is woven throughout ancient Roman history, honored by the Friars who found discipline in viticultural practices and saw the fruits of their labor as a symbol from God.  Through their experimentation they developed deep knowledge in cultivating wine, bringing significant advancements to the practice, particularly for Sangiovese. As a result of this early development, Sangiovese is now the most widely planted grape throughout Tuscany. Often expressed solely in Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino, Sangioves is also commonly blended in Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Carmignano, and Morellino di Scansano. The Friars’ faith in this grape, investment to its creation, and ability to spread their discoveries, set the foundation for the mass scale production of Sangiovese today.

Although somewhat sparse outside of Central Italy, Sangiovese production has spread to other winemaking countries including Argentina, Australia, and the US, among others. This globalization has led to the development of a myriad of styles. Classic notes of this varietal are tart cherry with a subtle amount of tomato. More rustic styles feature notes of leather, pepper, and tobacco while softer styles tend to showcase flavors of violets, strawberry, and fig. It’s structural components, high acidity, medium body, moderate alcohol, and moderate tannins make Sangiovese an excellent food pairing wine. A few recommendations include a hearty vegetable soup, mushroom risotto, or a savory steak.

If you haven’t had Sangiovese in a while, it’s definitely worth revisiting! Below are a few of our recommendations for Sangiovese wines available at Vinopolis now.

Fontodi Dino Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT, Tuscany 2018 750ml $75 special, 7 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 93 points
“The 2018 Dino, Fontodi’s 100% Sangiovese done in amphora, is so intriguing. The purity of the Sangiovese fruit is just remarkable, as is the wine’s energy. Readers will have to look past a bit of spritziness (that dissipates with air) but there is so much to like in the 2018, starting with its exceptional balance and poise. With a bit of air, the 2018 is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. I am really intrigued to see how the 2018 ages, as that is one of the biggest question marks for wines made in this style. Bright acids add a good deal of supporting structure that suggest the 2018 has at least another decade of fine drinking ahead of it.”

Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2016 750ml $69 special, 6 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 97 points
“I’m not sure how Il Poggione manages to remain one of the largest producers of Brunello maintaining such a high level of quality and turning out some of the best wines of the vintage year after year – but they do. The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is yet another stunning example. Depths of mineral-encased black cherries sage allspice licorice tobacco and crushed violets lift up from the glass. It’s seamlessly silky even as the palate is peppered with tart red and black berries nervous acids and savory exotic spices. This shows the density and weight of the vintage in a youthfully monolithic stance yet with all the necessary components to maintain perfect balance. The 2016 Il Poggione seems to fold in upon itself through the finish which is dark mysterious and structured with only hints of black tea and licorice to tempt the imagination. It’s a classic in the making. (Drink between 2026-2040)”
Wine Spectator 96 points “This Brunello leads with black cherry black currant and violet aromas augmented by flavors of iron tobacco and spice. Dusty tannins emerge on the lingering finish while the sweet fruit persists. Should be compelling in a decade. Best from 2025 through 2047”
Wine Advocate 95 points “The Il Poggione 2016 Brunello di Montalcino opens to a medium dark appearance with pretty Sangiovese shine and a little ruby sparkle. This vintage shows a slightly untamed or wild side with a dense and heavier fruit profile. The focus here is on blackberry dried cherry tobacco and even a touch of smoky tobacco or horse saddle. The wine shows the firm grip and tannic backbone that is a common trait in this vintage especially with the vineyards on this southern sunlit side of the appellation. I also get a considerable flash of acidity on the close almost too much that certainly needs a few more years to soften. You really need to wait with this one. Production is an ample 200000 bottles.”

La Gerla La Pieve, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2017 750ml $61.90 special, 22 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 95 points
“This delicious, elegantly structured red opens with classic Sangiovese aromas of blue flowers, ripe red berries, new leather and forest floor. The smooth, velvety palate delivers mature Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, baking spice and licorice alongside polished tannins. It’s already drinking beautifully but will also offer several years of enjoyment. Drink through 2027. -Kerin O’Keefe”
Wine Advocate 93+ points “Here’s a new discovery from La Gerla. The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve shows more tannic firmness than we saw in the Brunello annata, and this wine is also more nervous or tightly wound. It just needs a little more bottle evolution before it starts to shine. The bouquet is nicely balanced with dried rose, wild berry, earth and balsam herb. La Gerla does a great job of pulling out the varietal purity of Sangiovese.”
Vinous 93 points “Crushed stone, wilted violets, black currants, balsam herbs and worn leather can all be found as the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve blossoms in the glass. It plays tricks on the palate, at once rich and suave, and then suddenly slender and poised, yet always potent, with masses of red and black berries that penetrate deeply. This is so youthfully wound up yet full of balanced pleasures, as salty minerals, licorice and tart blackberries linger incredibly long under an air of violet florals. Even with the difficult vintage, this is a fantastic inaugural performance for La Gerla’s La Pieve, which is a single-vineyard expression sourced from Castelnuovo dell’Abate.”

Petrolo ‘Boggina Anfora’ Valdarno di Sopra, Tuscany 2014 750ml $39 special, 13 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 93 points
“It’s interesting to taste the 2014 Bòggina Anfora (Bògginanfora), Petrolo’s Sangiovese done in amphora next to the same wine aged in oak. The amphora wine is initially a bit softer and creamier in its contours, but it also offers less development in the glass. Lavender, plum, menthol, sage and sweet herbs lead into the expressive finish. This is another very pretty wine from Petrolo and proprietor Luca Sanjust.”

Bibi Graetz Testamatta Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2019 750ml $89 special, 22 bottles available
James Suckling 97 points
“Very attractive combination of dried fruit and spices with black cherries and plums. Aromas of flowers and sandalwood, too. Full-bodied and very refined, yet intense, with plush, velvety tannins that are wonderfully integrated and intertwined with the fruit. Ripe center palate. Tight at the end, suggesting the need for some serious bottle age. Very structured. Try after 2025.”
Decanter 96 points “The 20th anniversary bottling of Testamatta made, from the 2019 vintage, in brand new winemaking facilities in Florence. This just shines from the moment it’s poured. Layered and complex this is a gem of a wine filled with cherry, raspberry, damson and caramel notes alongside a savoury edge that makes it so moreish. Tannins that support but don’t overwhelm give a nice overall weight to the palate while the flavous linger on the long finish. Made from old vines on stony soils on the Tuscan hilltops. Grapes are selected and sourced from the best five vineyards, which are divided into parcels and harvested up to eight times. Fermentation is in open-top barriques for the smaller parcels and in barrels or stainless steel for the larger ones without any temperature controls. Maceration for 7-10 days then moved into old barriques for 20 months. Drinking Window 2024 – 2045.”

Casa Emma Harenae Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT, Tuscany 2018 750ml $49 special, 26 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 94 points
“Made entirely in amphora, this delicious Sangiovese has inviting, earthy aromas of ripe black plum, truffle, blackberry, baking spice and blue flower. Reflecting the nose, the enveloping, chewy palate doles out mouthfuls of fleshy Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, cinnamon and tobacco. Velvety tannins provide the almost lush framework while fresh acidity picks up the finish. Drink through 2025. -Kerin O’Keefe”
James Suckling 94 points “Aromas of dark plums, mulberries, black tea and black licorice. It’s full-bodied with chewy tannins. Structured and focused with rich, intense layers of dark fruit. Pure fruit here. Sangiovese. Made in amphorae. Drink or hold.”

Biondi Santi Tenuto Greppo Rosso di Montalcino, Tuscany 2018 750ml $99 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 points
“Elegant, graceful and fine, the Biondi-Santi 2018 Rosso di Montalcino offers a delicate approach to the senses and it spreads over the palate with polished and silky intensity. The acidity is elevated in this vintage. A handful of historic producers in Montalcino are bringing the Rosso category up to the next level, and the venerable house of Biondi-Santi is one of them. This was a somewhat unusual vintage with prolonged cool spells alternating with moments of intense heat. However, this wine shows even ripening and is quite vibrant and tangy in terms of its acidity. In spectacular Sangiovese style, the wine ends with lingering tones of wild cherry, sweet earth, potting soil and perfumed violet.”

Avignonesi ‘Poggetto di Sopra’, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2016 750ml $59 special, 2 bottles available
Decanter 96 points
“Virginie Saverys and Max Zarobe reset Montepulciano’s most famous name, Avignonesi, having bought it outright in 2009. This beautifully constructed, site-specific Sangiovese is juicy and smooth, its textural richness showcasing Vino Nobile’s intrinsic generosity without letting it become confused and burdensome as before. Drinking Window 2021 – 2030.”
Wine Advocate 94+ points “Made with organic fruit, the 2016 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Poggetto di Sopra is a silky and pure Tuscan red, with the natural fruit intensity and the acidity to pair with a hearty baked eggplant dish. The bouquet is fragrant and bright with dried cherry, cassis, smoke, tar and burning ember. This bottle is part of the Alliance Vinum, or the small group of estates dedicated to safeguarding Vino Nobile and the culture surrounding this historic wine appellation. Each producer in the alliance makes a single-vineyard expression of Sangiovese, and this is the contribution from the forward-thinking Avignonesi estate.”

Popular Chateauneuf du Papes

Arriving December 16th

Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Girard, Rhône 2020 750ml $39 pre-arrival special, 36 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92-94 points
“The 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape—tasted at the winery from a prospective blend prior to bottling—incorporated around 15% to 18% whole clusters. The 80% Grenache aged in concrete, while the Mourvèdre and Syrah matured in older barrels. It’s a really attractive effort, with bright raspberries and mouthwatering strawberries on the nose, ample weight and a silky-textured palate and a lingering, mouthwatering finish. Balanced and harmonious, it should drink well young, yet be capable of aging well for more than a decade.”

“Tasted from the concrete tank, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale is reassuringly on form, with intricate herbal nuances overlaid on ripe purple raspberries and black cherries. Full-bodied, silky and plush, with soft tannins cushioning the lengthy finish, this should be a real beauty to enjoy over the course of two decades.”

Jeb Dunnuck 95 points
“I continue to love what vigneron Philippe Bravay accomplishes from his estate in the northern part of the appellation, and his 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is another finesse-driven, incredibly beautiful expression of this magical region. Based on 85% Grenache, 5% Mourvedre, and the rest a mix of permitted varieties, it was partially destemmed and brought up in equal parts stainless steel and concrete tanks. It offers a huge perfume of ripe strawberries and red fruits as well as sappy flowers, garrigue, and Provençal herbs. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, balanced, incredibly seamless Châteauneuf du Pape with no hard edges, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. I’d be a buyer. This will put a smile on your face any time over the coming 10-15 years.”
