Schäfer-Fröhlich’s Breathtaking 2018s
“Tim Fröhlich has made breathtakingly beautiful wines in 2018. As I mentioned in the introductory section on the vintage, Tim’s approach to the heat and drought of 2018 was quite similar to that of Klaus-Peter Keller, Julian Haart and others who realized brilliant success in this vintage, as he approached his farming in 2018 with an eye towards slowing down the accumulation of sugars in the grapes….Tim also did not use grapes from his youngest vines in any of the estate wines this year, and in general, each of his bottlings has a higher average age of vines in 2018 than in any previous vintage. The results of such a meticulous approach are utterly brilliant and the collection at Weingut Schäfer-Fröhlich is as magical as any collection to be found in Germany in this vintage…”There is a precision of minerality, a purity of fruit and a lift and cut from the excellent acidities that make these GGs amongst the very best examples to be found in all of Germany in 2018. The dry Rieslings here have great purity to the beautiful fruit tones of the vintage, but in almost every case, this plays a secondary role to the stunning mineral signatures of the wines. And overall, it is the extraordinary degree of elegance and refinement to these dry bottlings in 2018 from Tim Fröhlich that really stands out in this vintage” –John Gilman, A View from the Cellar
New Arrivals, in Stock Now:
Schäfer-Fröhlich Felsenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs, Nahe 2018 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Wine Advocate 95+ points “The 2018 Felsenberg Riesling GG opens with a deep, intense and rich, concentrated and aromatic but also flinty bouquet full of ripe Riesling fruits and coolish herbal/vegetal as well gooseberry aromas. On the palate, this is a lush, intense, very mineral, salty-piquant and tightly structured dry Riesling from volcanic rocks. It’s a powerful but elegant, fresh and precise Riesling with great complexity and lingering salinity. A fabulous Felsenberg with lots of vitality and youthful grip. 13% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in August and October 2019.”
John Gilman 94+ points “By picking early in the Felsenberg, Tim Fröhlich was able to keep around 7.5 grams of acidity in his GG here this year, and he estimates that the wine will end up just about 12.5 percent octane. It is an absolutely superb bottle in the making, with the nose delivering a beautiful young constellation of tart orange, pink grapefruit, flint, smoke, lemongrass, wild yeasts, citrus peel and a delicate topnote of white flowers. On the palate the wine is pure, fullbodied and very elegant and seamless in balance, with a superb core of fruit, lovely backend mineral lift, bright acids and a very long, complex and extremely promising finish. Great juice. 2024-2065.”

Aleks Zecevic – Wine Spectator 93 points “A light-weight, zesty style, evoking notes of yeast, lime, violet and wet stone. The moderately firm structure is beautifully integrated. Delicious now, but the pastry element and high acidity suggest this will improve. Best from 2020 through 2030. 250 cases made, 56 cases imported.”

Aleks Zecevic – Wine Spectator 94 points “Sweet sourdough notes open up to flavors of guava, melon and roasted pineapple, all linked by piercing acidity. Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Spätlese Goldkapsel, Nahe 2018 750ML ($59.95) $59 special, 9 bottles in stock now
John Gilman 93+ points “The 2018 Goldkapsel Spätlese from the Felseneck vineyard was made solely with shriveled golden berries and there is not a trace of botrytis in this beautiful wine this year. The bouquet is nicely youthful at the present time and takes a bit of coaxing to offer up a gorgeous blend of pear, white cherries, wild yeasts, a lovely undertow of salty slate, white flowers and a whisper of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is very pure, medium-full and racy, with a lovely core, superb filigree and bounce and a very long, vibrant and complex finish. This just dances across the palate. 2024-2070.”

Schäfer-Fröhlich Frühlingsplätzchen Riesling Großes Gewächs, Nahe 2018 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 9 bottles in stock now
John Gilman 95 points “The 2018 Frühlingsplätzchen Großes Gewächs is going to be closer to 8.5 grams per liter of acidity in this vintage, as is the Halenberg, and this gives the wine just a touch more precision and backend lift than the lovely Felsenberg this year. The bouquet is stellar, wafting from the glass in a blaze of lime, pink grapefruit, a touch of herb tones, salty minerality, citrus peel and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, laser-like and gloriously transparent, with a superb core, zesty acids, laser-like focus and a very long, very minerally and complex finish. This is stunning young wine! 2024-2070.”

Stuart Pigott – jamessuckling.com 99 points “This has discreet aromatics, showing very fine stones and yellow grapefruit with a delicate, lemon-blossom perfume. The palate has a scintillatingly intense and focused feel with laser-guided acidity, driving a very long, pure and thrilling palate. Yellow citrus fruit abounds. Such precision is really special and the concentration in 2018 is immense. Drink or hold.”

Schäfer-Fröhlich Schlossbockelheimer Kupfergrube Riesling Großes Gewächs, Nahe 2018 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 11 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt – Wine Advocate 96 points “The 2018 Kupfergrube Riesling GG is clear and precise on the aromatic nose that displays enormously ripe and concentrated Riesling fruit that reflects the heat of the vintage, especially in south-facing vineyards like this. Almost raisin flavors here. Crystalline and elegant on the palate, this is a linear and mineral but lush, rich and powerful Riesling with grip and tension and lingering salinity that indicates very good aging potential. 13% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from a bottle declared as Fassprobe (a sample) in October 2019.”

John Gilman 92 points “The 2018 Schiefergestein Bockenaur Riesling Trocken is also a stunning wine and in many vintages, this is Großes Gewächs complexity and breed! The absolutely superb nose soars from the glass in a blaze of pink grapefruit, wild yeasts, flinty slate minerality, dried flowers and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is pure, medium-full and very transparent and elegant in personality, with great intensity of flavor, lightness of step and stunning cut and grip on the very long, complex and precise finish. This is GG quality without the GG price tag in 2018! 2019-2050+.”

Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Stromberg Großes Gewachs Riesling, Nahe 2018 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 7 bottles in stock now
John Gilman 97 points “I have never tasted a better young example from the Stromberg than this 2018 from Tim Fröhlich! The wine is so beautifully refined and precise this year, delivering a great bouquet of tart orange, sweet grapefruit, gorgeously complex minerality, wild yeasts, citrus zest, a touch of cress and a lovely floral topnote redolent of orange blossoms. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very, very long on the backend, with beautiful mid-palate depth, great cut and grip and a very, very long, snappy and nascently complex finish. This is breathtaking. 2026-2070.”

Schäfer-Fröhlich Riesling Trocken, Nahe 2018 750ML ($27.95) $26 special, 34 bottles in stock now
John Gilman 90+ points “The 2018 Estate Riesling Trocken is also an excellent bargain from Tim Fröhlich this year. The wine is twelve percent in alcohol and carries an impressive 8.5 grams of acidity this year, with all of the fruit for this bottling hailing from volcanic soils. The bouquet is beautifully expressive out of the blocks, offering up scents of lemon, tart orange, wild yeasts, an excellent mineral underpinning, white flowers and citrus zest. On the palate the wine is pure, elegant and medium-full, with lovely focus and grip, outstanding cut and grip and a long, complex and dancing finish. A stunning value this year! 2019-2040+.”

Schäfer-Fröhlich Vulkangestein Riesling Trocken, Nahe 2018 750ML ($41.95) $36 special, 17 bottles in stock now
Decanter 94 points “This wine is effectively made from declassified fruit from Tim Fröhlich’s volcanic grand cru sites of Felsenberg and Kupfergrube, and it’s a hot tip for lovers of thrilling Riesling. Like all his wines, this has a reductive cloud for now but underneath lies a tropical allure with pristine flavours of passion fruit and mango. The body is slender and concentrated, with a stony, long and crystalline finish. Lovely now but this also ages well.”

Case-6 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Stromberg Großes Gewächs Riesling, Nahe 2017 750ML ($599.95) $479 special
Mosel Fine Wines 96 points “The 2017er Bockenauer Stromberg GG proves rather reduced and smoky at first. It then gradually reveals riper notes of pineapple, orange, yellow peach, tangerine and gingerbread, all wrapped into spices and residual scents from the spontaneous fermentation. The wine proves coats the palate with juicy and lightly flavors. The finish is however focused and even racy thanks to a pure and lime driven acidity kicking in. A slightly tart side in the after-taste still needs to melt into the wine but the wine is hugely impressive. 2025-2037”

Raymond Usseglio’s Elite Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils was founded in 1948. In the intervening decades the estate has grown into one of the most respected in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Today the family farms its 60 acres biodynamically, which ensures a healthy crop of grapes and a close relationship between grower and vine. This devoted attention in the vineyard carries through to the winery—these are stunning bottles and among the best each year in the Southern Rhône.
Usseglio’s Cuvée Impériale represents the best of the domaine. Very old Grenache vines (planted in 1901-02) produce low yields of amazing natural concentration. The 2017 Impériale consists of 90% old-vine Grenache, with an assortment of indigenous Rhône varietals to round things out. The resulting wine is one of the great bottles of the region, on the same tier as Télégraphe or Beaucastel—just $15-$20 per bottle cheaper.
Meanwhile, the Cuvée Girard offers a more approachable wine in the short term. It too is made of 90% Grenache, with Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault, and Counoise blended in. This, too, is one of the best deals in CdP: a sub-$50 (now sub-$45) powerhouse that’s ready to go from the pull of the cork.
These were some of the smartest buys in Châteauneuf before our recent price reductions. Now they’re no-brainers for any fan of classically framed Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Impériale, Rhône 2017 750ML ($79.95) Was $66 Now $59
Wine Advocate 96 points “The 2017 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Impériale (from vines planted in 1902) is firm and structured to age magnificently. Roses, black tea and red raspberries all appear on the nose and palate, framed by fine-grained tannins. I suspect it will close down shortly, but there is terrific material here, and the wine will drink well for two decades.”
Jeb Dunnuck 96 points “The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Impériale kicks the intensity up a notch and offers rocking notes of black cherries, garrigue, ground pepper, and incense. More expansive, full-bodied, concentrated, and pure, it’s a brilliant, brilliant wine that stays tight and compact at the moment yet has beautiful concentration, present tannins, and a great finish. It has everything, but it needs 4-5 years or bottle age.”

Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Girard, Rhône 2017 750ML ($59.95) Was $45 Now $41.90
Wine Advocate 94 points “A special cuvée made for American importer Peter Weygandt, the 2017 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Girard includes a bit more old-vine Grenache, and it shows in the wine’s increased elegance. It’s more floral than the regular bottling, with scents of tea and roses, but it’s also darker and richer, with black cherry fruit, a velvety mouthfeel and a long, layered finish.”

Jeb Dunnuck 96-100 points “Violets, spring flowers, cassis, plums, and incense notes all define the stunningly good 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Impériale. Made from 100% Grenache from very old vines, it’s full-bodied and powerful, yet also graceful, balanced and pure, with terrific freshness and purity. My money is on this flirting with perfection once bottled.”

Château Beauséjour
Standout Back-Vintage Bordeaux
Outside of the collectable Growths, it’s rare for reviewers to revisit Bordeaux a decade after the harvest. But when we’re offered one of those rare windows into how a wine is developing, that’s always exciting. And this is especially true when the wine is evolving as miraculously as today’s featured wine. In 2018 Neal Martin of Vinous revisited Château Beauséjour’s 2008 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru and discovered a hidden gem from an underrated vintage.
“The 2008 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse is evolving into one of the standout wines of the vintage. From a modest showing in barrel, it seemed to improve when I last tasted it in 2012 and now at a decade old, it has upped the ante further. Intense wild strawberry and blackberry notes struck through with minerals and graphite, all beautifully defined and immediately take you aback and yet you know there is much more to come. The palate is very well balanced with a firm but not imposing structure. The acidity is beautifully judged and it counterbalances the impressive fruit concentration, whilst there is a killer sorbet-like freshness on the finish that leaves the mouth tingling. Sometimes this Saint Émilion can surpass your expectations and whilst the 2008 might not be as spectacular as the 1990, it is one of the hidden gems of the vintage.” – Neal Martin, Vinous (tasted in 2018)

An Oregon Icon
Cristom’s 2017 Single Vineyards
Cristom is one of the hallowed names in Oregon. They’ve been a top name since their inception in 1993 and make reference point wines from their beautiful estate vineyards in the Eola-Amity Hills. Much of the credit for their success goes to their vineyards—located just below Bethel Heights and Temperance Hill, truly Cristom is one of the Grand Cru sites of Oregon. The rest of the credit goes to Steve Doerner, their winemaker since the beginning, who made a name for Calera in the 1980s before moving to Oregon and becoming a local legend.
These are wines that have powerful personalities allied to a Burgundian sense of proportion and savor. Doerner loves to use a lot of whole clusters in fermentations and so the wines always have a grip and earthiness that grounds their deep fruit and rich textures. 2017 was a bit of a return to older-school Oregon, as vintages go, warmer than historical averages but much cooler than the heat years of 2014-2016. We’ve been thrilled with many of the wines we’ve tasted from the year and Cristom is no exception—these are some stunning wines, beautiful and nuanced already.

Cristom ‘Eileen Vineyard’ Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2017 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Josh Raynolds 95 points “Bright red. An intensely perfumed bouquet displays ripe red/blue fruit, baking spice, incense qualities and a strong, mineral overtone. Offers sweet, penetrating raspberry, blueberry, cherry pit, lavender pastille and spicecake flavors that show serious depth as well as vivacity. Displays impressive clarity and spicy thrust on the finish, which features smoothly interwoven tannins and suave, clinging floral and mineral notes.”
Wine & Spirits 95 points “In an otherwise warm year, this pinot, from the highest elevations of Cristom’s property, reflects a windblown coolness, dramatizing a tension between savory whole-cluster scents and luminous lean fruit. It’s aromatically seductive, with its scents of clove, thyme, lavender and leaves leading into dark cherry flavors. What’s most impressive is the texture, firm but lively, with an acid-tannin matrix that drives the wine with firm, silken intensity.
James Suckling 94 points “This has a very bright array of rich red cherries, together with a herbal accent and a thread of rose-like perfume, as well as autumnal leaves and sweet, woody spices. The palate has very assertive red cherries with elegant tannins that are paper-fine, but have combined length and strength. Great detail here. Drink or hold.”

A wild, highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red fruits, exotic spices and candied flowers, with smoky mineral and incense notes that acquire strength as this youthful wine gains its footing. Stains the palate with vibrant raspberry, bitter cherry, star anise and rose pastille flavors that show a compelling blend of depth and litheness. Fine-grained tannins build slowly on a strikingly long, finely etched finish that features baking spice, floral and subtle earth notes.”
James Suckling 95 points “An earthy thread here with more savory, herbal and gently spicy notes, as well as graphite. Latent red cherries, too. The palate has a very sleek and succulent feel with evenly cast, sturdy tannins that harness great length and depth. Powerful yet measured and all about the earth. Try from 2023.”

The full-bodied palate is incredibly dense and bold, swathed in vast, comprehensive tannins and layer upon layer of plums and cherries. There’s marvelous length and decadence to the finish, where the dried-spice character goes on and on. Stunning richness. Drink from 2025.”
International Wine Report 96 points “An incredible wine from Lazzeretti, this Brunello is lively and intense with exuberant character, showing notes of hibiscus flowers and lavender along with notes reminiscent of blueberries and star anise. It possesses incredible energy with a wonderful fresh character through its full bodied texture. It displays outstanding overall quality and a pure territorial expression which is wrapped up in velvety tannins and an incandescent finish. Talenti Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2015 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Kerin O’keefe-Wine Enthusiast 96 points “Editor’s Choice. Rose petal, crushed mint, woodland berry and eucalyptus aromas slowly take shape on this delicious full bodied red. It’s linear and elegantly structured, featuring juicy Marasca cherry, cranberry, licorice and cocoa alongside firm velvety tannins. It closes on an orange-zest note. Drink 2023–2035.”
James Suckling 96 points “There’s freshness galore here in the form of orange zest and citrus peel. But this Brunello isn’t short on power either; red licorice, cardamom and dried hibiscus pepper the nose. To support the ripe fruit are layers of sinewy tannins and gliding acidity, making for an altogether sophisticated and edgy impression. Refined and elegant on the long finish. Drink from 2023.”

A cellar pick
Tenuta Col d’Orcia Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2015 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido – Vinous 94 points “At first, the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is quite closed in the glass, to the point I move on to the wine next to it… However, upon returning to the glass a few minutes later, I come to realize that the 2015 simply needs time to come to life; and once it does, watch out. Here I find a gorgeous and intense display, mixing savory and sweet, as well as, earth and fruit, as dusty cedar and spice give way to ripe strawberry with a hint of citrus, with wild herbs and a hint of animal musk adding further depths. On the palate, silky textures meld into woodland red berry fruits, zesty spice, hints of cedar, savory herbs, saline minerals, and mounting tannins. The finish is long and structured, yet there remains enough primary fruit to balance it all out, as well as resonating acids, intriguing hints of citrus, and spice. This is remarkably balanced, singing already, yet it’s full of potential for the cellar.”
Wine Spectator 94 points “This combines the best characteristics of Sangiovese, with cherry and strawberry fruit, earth, leather and iron notes and balsamic elements of wild thyme, rosemary and Mediterranean scrub. Shows a bit of heat on the finish, yet remains fresh and long. Best from 2023 through 2042. 16,600 cases made, 3,000 cases imported.”
“Beautifully fragrant”

Case-6 Lisini Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2015 750ML ($299.95) $279 special (that’s only $46.50/bottle!)
Case-12 Lisini Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2015 750ML ($579.95) $539 special (that’s only $44.92/bottle!)
Decanter 96 points “With vineyards between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell’Abate on the inner edge of the Sesta district, Lisini’s vineyards are cleansed by constant breezes from the Tuscan Coast. Stony soils with an important underpinning of limestone as well as elevations over 300 metres help preserve freshness in their wines. The 2015 is beautifully fragrant, almost exotic in character. Plump red fruit and sweet summer herbs fill the mouth but rather than being heavy, this is poised and transparent. Ample powdery tannins are fine and lead to a tangy marine finish.”

Bright & nuanced
Tenimenti Angelini Val di Suga Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2015 750ML ($69.95) $49 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Decanter 92 points “As of the 2015, all of Val di Suga’s wines spend less time in wood to curb Sangiovese’s tendency to oxidise. This wine brings together grapes from all three of Val di Suga’s distinct vineyard sites in equal proportions. Fragrant orange and raspberry notes progress into darker, earthier nuances. There is a saline edge and a gentle grip holding together lush fruit. It’s a touch short but still bright and tangy on the finish.”
James Suckling 92 points “A dense and linear red with medium to full body, chewy tannins and a slightly extracted finish. Needs time to soften. Better after 2022.”

A cellar pick
La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2013 750ML ($69.95) $49 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
James Suckling 93 points “Aromas of blackberry and cherry with flowers. Smoky. Hot stone. Medium to full body, firm and fresh tannins and a delicious finish. Beautiful now but needs a year or two to soften.”
Wine Spectator 92 points “Starts out with cherry, iron and tobacco flavors, before firming up, with a solid structure. A kernel of fruit holds steady as this red unfolds on the lingering finish. Best from 2022 through 2036. 2,200 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.”

Powerful & intense
Tenuta Fanti ‘Vallocchio’, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015 750ML ($69.95) $49 special, 22 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 97 points “What a nose of dried meat, tar, tobacco, dried boysenberries, red licorice and baking spices. Hearty tannins surround the full-bodied palate from every side, wringing bursting acidity from a full-throttle core of ripe, chewy fruit. The power and intensity are undeniable, but as you seep in the rich dried spices and dried meat on the finish, you catch a glimpse of crystalline acidity through the looking glass. Drink in 2025.”
Savory & structured
Sassetti Livio Pertimali Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2014 750ML ($69.95) $49 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Case-6 Sassetti Livio Pertimali Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2014 750ML ($419.95) $279 special (that’s only $46.50/bottle!)
James Suckling 94 points “Some earthy and savory aromas dominate the dried red cherries initially, then dried wild herbs and quite intense notes of spicy dried red cherries emerge. The palate has a very taut, structured feel with handsomely proportioned tannins carrying gently leathery dried red cherries. Long finish. Drink or hold.”

Charlopin’s Coveted Grand Crus Burgundy

In the years since he burst onto the scene, he has developed a devoted following in the United States thanks to his more modern style. He also sources from some of the finest vineyards in the Côte d’Or, including iconic climats like Chambertin and Échezeaux. We have several of his highly coveted Grand Cru bottling in stock now. Domaine Charlopin Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits 2013 750ML ($249.95) $199 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points “There’s a lot of oak here, lending char, vanilla and whisky elements to the core of black cherry and black currant flavors. Fresh and firm, though the finish absorbs the oak better than the initial attack. Vibrant and long, this just needs time to integrate. Best from 2020 through 2036.”

Domaine Charlopin Chambertin Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits 2013 750ML ($349.95) $249 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Burghound 93-95 points “Dont miss! Reduction flattens the fruit. Here too there is excellent volume and almost painful intensity to the broad-shouldered, concentrated and mineral-driven flavors that culminate in an explosively long, driving and highly persistent finish. This is a seriously impressive effort and as it often is chez Charlopin, it’s the best wine in the range in 2013.”

Domaine Charlopin Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits 2013 750ML ($249.95) $199 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points “Bright and focused, exhibiting spicy black cherry, raspberry, earth, smoke, vanilla and toast aromas and flavors. Bracing acidity offsets the lush texture, driving this to a long, expansive finish. Best from 2019 through 2030.”

Domaine Philippe Charlopin-Parizot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits 2015 750ML ($299.95) $249 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Neal Martin – Wine Advocate 92-94 points “The 2015 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which is a 50/50 blend from Mazoyères and Charmes, has an elegant and pure bouquet that unfolds in the glass, delivering both red and black fruit with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe red berry fruit matched with fine acidity and harmony, long and almost languorous towards the finish. Very fine – one of Philippe’s best offerings in 2015.”
Stephen Tanzer – Vinous 92-94 points “(13.3% natural alcohol; half from Charmes and half from Mazoyères, with both parcels planted 60 years ago): Saturated deep ruby! Black fruit aromas convey an almost candied ripeness. Very rich, sweet and deep, filling the mouth with ripe black fruit flavors. Finishes very long, with huge but ripe tannins. In contrast to the Bonnes-Mares, this is clearly a wine from a sun-drenched growing season. Very impressive but almost too much.”
Burghound 91-94 points “From a 50/50 split of Charmes and Mazoyères. A pungent nose of reduction and wood is difficult to assess though by contrast there is excellent volume and richness to the sleek, focused and extract-rich big-bodied flavors that possess terrific complexity on the balanced and mouth coating finish. This is really quite good and should be approachable after only a few years of bottle age.”
Domaine Charlopin Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits 2013 750ML ($249.95) $189 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points “Draws you in, with beautifully fragrant cherry, floral and spice aromas. The oak spice is more dominant on the palate, integrating with the cherry and blackberry fruit and lush texture. Impressive and should come together with time. Best from 2020 through 2034.”
Burghound 92-94 points “A restrained, elegant and airy nose displays both red and blue pinot fruit as well as plum and spice nuances. There is good richness and tension to the medium-bodied and velvety flavors that possess fine mid-palate density, all wrapped in an energetic and refined finish where a touch of mocha surfaces. While this will almost certainly repay extended cellaring it should also be a reasonably good candidate for enjoyment young.”

Domaine Philippe Charlopin-Parizot Échezeaux Grand Cru, Côte de Nuits 2015 750ML ($299.95) $249 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Stephen Tanzer – Vinous 92-94 points “(from the lieu-dit En Orveaux): Full red with ruby tones. Sexy, slightly high-toned aromas of red raspberry and smoked meat, plus a whiff of cooked strawberry that Charlopin says is typical of this cool site, which he picks ten days after his Clos Vougeot. Fine-grained and surprisingly sappy on the palate, showing terrific depth to its raspberry and saline mineral flavors. Finishes with savory tannins and excellent lingering sweetness. As much red- as black-fruit in style, this soil-driven wine really stains the palate.”
Burghound 91-93 points “From En Orveaux. Mild reduction doesn’t completely mask the background aromas of floral and spice nuances. There is both good richness and a lovely sense of energy to the refined and seductive middle weight flavors that possess good but not exceptional depth and length. On the plus side there is fine underlying material and this may very well develop more complexity than I imagine and if it does, my preliminary range may be too conservative.”
