Cayuse Camaspelo: Bionic Bordeaux Blend

Exciting Last Minute Addition

Christophe Baron, Rhone Master of the high desert, offers the most compelling take on the Left Bank in the state of Washington. 2013 couldn’t have offered better conditions for the vineyards, with plenty of cool nights to keep the Cabernet structured, and the Merlot lively with juicy acidity. These might well be the perfect throwback to what Washington wines promised in terms of balance between the New and Old world styles.

We’re only receiving a small number of these, which we’re offering at the lowest price in the country. If there was ever a more prefect occasion to dip into the Cayuse world, I couldn’t think of one. Take the opportunity to taste this very special wine.

Arriving Tomorrow:

Cayuse Vineyards Camaspelo, Walla Walla Valley 2013 750ML ($119.95) $99 prearrival special
Wine Advocate 95-97 points “Leading off the 2013s, the 332-case 2013 Camaspelo is made from 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot that was aged all in puncheons. Notes of iron, red and black currants, licorice and lead pencil characteristics emerge from this medium to full-bodied, elegant, complex Bordeaux blend that would pass undetected in a lineup of Pauillacs. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring and drink through 2033.”

Goodfellow: Reinforcements Coming in Soon
Just before the new reviews came out for Oregon, we were discussing how reassured we were that we could always find Goodfellow on the shelf. Great wines, great prices, seriously underrated… whoops. While we’re thrilled for the Goodfellow team, their wines are like water in a hot pan right now; here, then gone in a sizzle. We’re getting another order rolling in and so we urge you to grab them before they’re gone. They’re perfect to stock up for the holidays and beyond. Lay these down, drink them now – there’s no wrong choice.

Arriving Tomorrow:

Goodfellow Family Cellars Clover Reserve Pinot Gris, Oregon 2015 750ML ($21.95) $18 special, 12 bottles available

Fermentation is with native yeasts and elevage is mostly in neutral French oak with a small percentage of Acacia. The wine spends 14 months on the gross lees before being racked a single time before bottling. There is beautiful balance of acidity, purity of fruit and richness.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Durant Vineyard Pinot Noir, Oregon 2014 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 24 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92+ points “Very pale ruby colored with a hint of purple, the 2014 Pinot Noir Durant Vineyard has a very pretty perfume of violets and rose hip tea with a core of fresh raspberries and wild strawberries plus a touch of damp soil. Medium-bodied, fine, fresh and elegantly played on the palate, it gives great flavor intensity and impressive depth.”-LPB
Winery note “Produced from hand-picked Pommard and Dijon 114, planted in 1973 and 1993, the Durant Vineyard is often the first site at full ripeness. It is fermented in small lots with native yeasts with a good portion of whole clusters. The wine is aged for 18 months in 15%-25% new French oak barrels and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Durant is often tense, silken and delicate with spicy red-fruited purity and clean texture from one of the original Dundee Hills vineyards.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Ribbon Ridge Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($29.95) $26 special, 24 bottles available
Wine Advocate 91 points “The 2014 Pinot Noir Ribbon Ridge has a very pale ruby color and notes of dried Provence herbs, dusty earth and garrigue over a core of fresh cherries and red currants plus a floral waft. The medium-bodied palate delivers an impressive structure, with firm, fine-grained tannins and a lively backbone supporting the quietly intense fruit, finishing long.” LPB
Winery note “This bottle holds a special place in our portfolio as an introduction to the smallest AVA with a reputation of the highest regard. We are thrilled to work with this fruit, and pass it along to you. Enjoy deep flavors of clove, mulberry and a touch of strawberry with the structure we are known for.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Richard’s Cuvee Chardonnay, Oregon 2015 375ML ($24.95) $19.50 special, 21 half-bottles available
Goodfellow Family Cellars Richard’s Cuvee Chardonnay, Oregon 2015 750ML ($39.95) $36 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2014 Chardonnay Richard’s Cuvee knocks it out of the park with a nose of ripe apricots, pink grapefruit and guava underscored by fresh ginger, baking bread, beeswax and yeast extract hints with a waft of jasmine. Medium-bodied, the palate is very elegant and refined, with incredible freshness and depth wrapped in a lovely satiny texture, finishing with long lasting mineral and spices layers. Wow!”-LPB
Winery note “Dry-farmed chardonnay from a 1-acre parcel at Whistling Ridge, hand-picked, whole-cluster pressed. After a brief period settling the wine is racked into large French oak vessels. Fermentation and elevage lasts about 21 months on the gross lees. The shallow marine sediment soils and windy environs at Whislting Ridge produce a Chardonnay that is mineral, deep and long with chalky citrus fruit.”

Just Arrived: Italians for the Long Haul

Just Arrived!
The change in season is going to be bringing a lot more new arrivals, and a tight group of well-built bottles have just come in. The value in Italy is truly fantastic right now, and these wines are showing well above their price point. They’re all perfectly able to drink now (with enough air, of course) but they will lay down and age nicely over the coming decade.

Our New Arrivals:

Cantine del Notaio Il Repertorio Aglianico del Vulture, Basilicata 2013 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 93 points “The Cantine del Notaio 2013 Aglianico del Vulture Il Repertorio is a fabulous wine that possesses the depth and noble sophistication that you should expect from this small, quality wine denomination in the deep south of Italy. The bouquet is beautifully embellished with blackberry preserves, tobacco, bitter chocolate and smoky granite. The presentation is tight and seamless with a firm tannic nature that pulls the wine together in terms of substance and length. This excellent wine should flesh out further with more aging.”

Podere Grattamacco Bolgheri Superiore, Bolgheri 2013 750ML ($89.95) $59 special, 36 bottles
Wine Advocate 96 points “The first word that comes to mind when describing this wine is seamless. The 2013 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco offers a generous and forthcoming succession of dark fruit and spice-driven flavors that fit together like a long chain of pearls on a necklace. It’s impossible to taste where one flavor starts and the next one ends. That balanced and harmonious approach is evident in the mouth where it offers a silky, smooth and long textural impression. I suggest another few years of bottle aging before popping the cork on this beautiful blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese. This is no doubt the best wine from Grattamacco tasted in the past decade.”

San Filippo Le Lucere, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012 750ML ($89.95) $79 special, 18 bottles available
James Suckling 98 points “This is an incredible 2012 with fantastic depth, richness, focus and tension. Full body, polished tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Goes on for minutes. Better in 2020 but a joy to taste now. One of the wines of the vintage.”

Rose for Fall, Rose for All!

A Large Selection of Roses on Sale Now
We say it again and again, Rose drinks well all year long. Why not get into it at the beginning of Fall when those last lingering days of warmth will bring the stragglers off of your tomato plants? They’ll also pair well with your fall harvest dishes, all the way through Thanksgiving. Perhaps a crispy roast duck or some dim sum? Some smoked brisket and a little spice? Our favorite feature of Rose is its willingness to play nicely with almost anything you can throw at it.

These were some of our favorite wines this season, and while we are looking forward to another slate of pink wines to roll through the door next spring, we’d love to see these enjoyed sooner rather than later. Stash a few away for those days when the clouds are low, the drizzle is relentless, and you need a reminder that somewhere the sun is shining.

Domaine de la Petite Mairie Bourgueil Rose, Loire 2015 750ML ($21.95) Was $18 Now  $16 special, 13 bottles available
Importer note “As we enter the Touraine, the Cabernet Franc takes center stage. The Bourgueil Rosé produced by James Petit from vineyards in Restigné and Bourgueil is a graceful and dignified wine with lots of class. This should prove to be a particularly fine reason to pay attention to an underappreciated appellation that offers stunning value, even more so in its red wines. A favorite of ours!”

Domaine Collotte Marsannay Rose, Cote de Nuits 2015 750ML ($24.95) Was $21.90 Now $16 special, 18 bottles available
Vinopolnote: One of our favorite producers of affordable Marsannay presents a rose with surprising pop and shoulders. Another year round rose selection.

Staff Pick: Andy

There was no way we could avoid a Riesling feature in this newsletter, and fortunately, I recently enjoyed one of the most powerful Rieslings I’ve ever had. One of our auction wines, the Joh. Bapt. Schafer Burg Layer Schlossberg Spatlese is among the most densely packed wines I have ever smelled. The sheer concentration and power in the glass was enough to make me sit back and wait half an hour before I could even take a taste. Scents of dense stone, fresh cut citrus and light pineapple mingled with a hint of smoke. The wine had a first impression of being light and playful, which surprised me, but built into a rich mouthfeel – slightly sweeter than I anticipated, but not at all out of balance. The smoke I smelled came across almost like a little bacon underneath a mountain of fruit and vibrant acid. This had texture and build on the finish. This is definitely a wine that was shaped by the dry heat of 2015, and I hope to find some 2016 down the road to compare. It is a winery that will forever be on my radar.

Weingut Joh. Bapt. Schafer Burg Layer Schlossberg Riesling Spatlese, Nahe 2015 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 35 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2015 Burg Layer Schlossberg Riesling Spätlese was auctioned in Bad Kreuznach in September 2016. Sourced from vines that are less than 30 years old, it opens with a very clear, ripe and almost tropical fruit aroma intertwined with delicate, flinty notes from the reddish/silvery slatey clay soils. This is another reductive styled, racy, piquant and finesse-full Riesling with tropical fruit aromas, some toasted speck and date flavors. Its combination of finesse and lush fruit texture reminds me of red slate Rieslings from the Mosel such as Ürziger Würzgarten or the red slate parts of the Pünderich Marienburg. The finish is full of tension and grip. A gorgeous Spätlese of which 400 liters have been produced.”
Mosel Fine Wines 92 points “Made from a 25-year-old parcel and harvested at 94° Oechsle, this delivers a nice set of fruity and juicy aromatics including yellow peach, quince star anise, rose water and grapefruit juice. The wine starts off on the light side on the palate but creamy fruits paired with rich Auslese GK styled sweetness quickly take over before some pear, pineapple and peach lead the way to a juicy and creamy long finish. This is a nicely creamy and clean Auslese GK styled Riesling. 2022-2035”

Delas Freres 2015: Landing in November

A Winery of Enduring Tradition and Bold Exploration

The team at Delas Freres has a history that is entrenched right in the heart of the Northern Rhone. As a company, however, Delas has been willing to look honestly at its own strengths and weaknesses, and this has made it possible to move past tradition for tradtion’s sake and simply focus on making the best wine possible. Large old steel tanks were replaced by smaller concrete vats, enabling fermenting and ageing to occur in a parcel by parcel process. Facilities were improved and relocated to improve their location in proximity to vineyards and to offer a more complete visitor experience.

The wines have definitely shown a focus on the depth and power that can be brought out of these ancient vineyards, but there is also finesse to these wines that comes about with age. The much heralded 2015 vintage promises wines of extreme clarity and focus, with absolute purity to the fruit. If there is a vintage to explore the differences of the Northern Rhone appellations, this is it – a touchstone vintage. If you’re a fan of Syrah, these will be wines you should not pass by. Limited quantities of these gems, so don’t plan to hesitate too long.

Here are the wines arriving this November:

White:
Delas Freres Condrieu Clos Boucher, Rhone 2015 750ML ($99.95) $79 prearrival special
Wine Advocate 95 points “A much smaller production cuvée, the 2015 Condrieu Clos Boucher (aged 80% in barrel and 20% in stainless steel) is a sensational Condrieu that offers textbook, yet pedal to the metal notes of white peach, tangerine, citrus blossom and hints of minerality. Impeccably balanced, fresh and lively, it should be given six months in bottle and enjoyed over the following 4-5 years.”

Delas Freres Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes-Marquise de la Tourette Blanc, Rhone 2015 750ML ($99.95) $79 prearrival special
Wine Advocate 97 points “A wine that competes with the best wines of the appellation, the 2015 Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes Blanc checks in as 100% Marsanne from two great terroirs: Bessards and Grandes Vignes. There are just over 300 cases of this elixir, which was vinified and aged all in barrel. Buttered citrus, white currants, crushed rocks and exotic flower notes all flow to a full-bodied, beautifully textured, layered, unctuous white that still glides across the palate. It’s a sensational Northern Rhône white to enjoy over the coming 2-3 decades.”

Red:
Delas Freres Saint-Joseph Francois de Tournon, Rhone 2015 750ML ($44.95) $38 prearrival special
Wine Advocate 93-95+ points “The three St Joseph cuvées include the brooding and backward 2015 Saint Joseph Francois de Tournon, which will spend roughly 12 months in a mix of barrels and stainless steel. Its inky black/purple color is followed by Hermitage-like aromas and flavors of burning embers, crushed rocks, liquid blackberries and cassis. Full-bodied, deep, rich and layered, with bright acidity and fine tannin, it’s a killer wine to buy by the case.”

Delas Freres Saint-Joseph Sainte-Epine, Rhone 2015 750ML ($79.95) $66 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94-96 points “In the same mold as the Francois de Tournon, the 2015 Saint Joseph Sainte Epine will see 18 months in barrel, 40% being new. This loaded, inky-colored, gorgeously concentrated and pure effort has off-the-chart notes of cassis, crushed rocks, pepper and graphite; it also has full-bodied richness, building, ultra-fine tannin and a blockbuster finish. It’s one of the gems in the vintage, but there are only 500 cases made, so don’t miss a chance to grab a few bottles.”

Delas Freres Hermitage Les Bessards, Rhone 2015 750ML ($249.95) $199 prearrival special
Wine Advocate 95-97 points “The top cuvée is the 2015 Hermitage les Bessards, which comes from the middle to lower portion of the steep, granite hillside known as Bessards, unquestionably one of the best terroirs for Syrah in the world. Its inky purple color is followed by a full-bodied, rich, thrillingly concentrated red that has huge tannin, bright acidity and a solid mid-palate concentration. It still tastes like it just came from the press and will need to be forgotten for a decade. As normal, it’s completely destemmed and will see 18 months in 30% new oak.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Delas Freres Cote-Rotie La Landonne, Rhone 2015 750ML ($289.95) $219 prearrival special
Wine Advocate 96-100 points “There are two Côte Rôties and the top cuvée is the utterly sensational 2015 Côte Rôtie La Landonne, which should be a candidate for perfection when it’s released. Coming all from the La Landonne lieu-dit and made from 100% Syrah that will see 18 months in 40% new French oak, it offers a huge, layered and ripe style, as well as notes of blueberries, blackberries, crushed violets, graphite and minerality. It has sweet tannin, but there are plenty of them, so it’s not for those looking for instant gratification.”
