James Suckling 99 Points- #7 James Suckling’s Top 100 Wines of 2019- “The aromas here are so spellbinding with shitake mushrooms, wet earth and moss, as well as tree bark and, finally, dark fruit. The palate is incredible as it builds and grows with full body, but always tight and reserved. It shows so much depth and complexity. Please try not to touch this until 2025”

Bibi Graetz Testamatta Toscana IGT 2018 750ml $99 special, 12 bottles availableDecanter 100 Points “Finely textured, with a nuanced perfume that fills the glass and takes you to the intense underbrush of Tuscany. Succulent and yet savoury, this has a lilting freshness that is overlaid with ripe berry fruits, sage and white pepper spice, and clear minerality in terms of its scraping texture that makes your mouth water on the finish. Feels light and sculpted and yet has an intensity that skewers you to the spot. This is a great wine, with scope and imagination that doesn’t want to let you go. Genuinely stands out among the wines of this tasting, and these are a fine array of wines. As with Colore, Bibi Graetz selects only old vines, the youngest 50 years old from five different vineyard sites across Tuscany, all farmed organically. Fermentations in open 225l barrels with natural yeasts and manual punch downs.”

La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza Rioja Reserva 2015 750ml $39 special, 33 bottles availableJames Suckling 96 Points “A rich nose of raspberry, crushed strawberry, blueberry, coconut, cedar and sweet spice. It’s medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins and fresh acidity. Creamy, balanced and layered with vibrant, spicy character. Long and polished.” Vinedos Paganos El Puntido Rioja Gran Reserva 2007 750ml $59 special, 10 bottles availableWine Advocate 96 Points “Putting my nose in the glass of the 2007 El Puntido Gran Reserva transported me to the classical Riojas from yesteryear. The wine has a fully developed nose with all the textbook descriptors of a good aged Rioja—forest floor, cigar ash, cold bonfire, truffle, cherries in liqueur, blonde tobacco, spices and iodine. But this is a classical Gran Reserva that has something that was not that traditional, and it comes from a single vineyard and matured in brand new French oak barrels for 28 months.”
Portugal
Quinta Do Noval Touriga Nacional 2016 750ml $46.50 special, 11 bottles availableDecanter 96 Points “Made only in top years from the best lots, like all Noval’s reds this is fermented in stainless steel then aged in French oak – in this case for 10 months in 35% new oak. Signature orange blossom riffs make for a delicate interplay of fruit and flower. A plume of fine, schistous tannins and bright acidity gently but persuasively anchor and extend its inky, perfumed black berry and plum fruits, with hints of bergamot, milk chocolate, clove, cedar and cinnamon. Very fine and such a great example of the variety, and nearly half the price of the Reserva!” Graham Vintage Port 2017 750ml $99 special, 30 bottles availableDecanter 98 Points “Based on Touriga Franca from south-facing slopes at Quinta dos Malvedos, with Touriga Nacional from quintas Vila Velha and Vale de Mealhadas topped out with fruit from old vines at Quinta da Tua and 10% Sousão. It’s a very deep blue-black colour with an expressive, super-ripe nose of plum, mint and bergamot which springs from the glass. The palate is rich, velvety and voluptuous in typical Graham’s style. The initial richness makes the tannins, which show up on the ripe, broad, mouthwatering finish. Wonderful purity and definition. A real wow of a wine!”
Argentina
Bodega Cuvelier Los Andes Grand Vin 2016 750ml $36 special, 24 bottles availableVinous 91+ Points “Bright medium ruby Blackberry, cassis, licorice, herbs and complementary oak spices on the nose, plus a violet high note. Densely packed and smooth, with its brooding flavors of crushed dark berries currently carrying strong oak notes of licorice and bitter chocolate, not to mention the firm herbal edge of the vintage. Quite pungent–even peppery–after the 2015 Colección, finishing with dusty tannins and a penetrating quality that augurs well for improvement in bottle. This blend will need at least a couple years to reveal its full personality”

Cayuse Impulsivo Tempranillo 2016 750ml $119 special, 1 bottle availableJeb Dunnuck 98+ Points “The 2016 Impulsivo is all Tempranillo comes from the En Chamberlin Vineyard and was brought up in 50-60% new French oak. It’s a deep ruby/purple-colored effort and reveals a stunning bouquet of cassis, black cherries, smoked earth, gravelly minerality, and cedary spice. Still tight, backward, and vibrant on the palate, it another one of the 2016s that’s going to need 3-4 years of bottle age.’ Wine Advocate 95 Points “With only three acres dedicated to Tempranillo, the 2016 Impulsivo comes from the En Chamberlin vineyard. The nose is scented of red fruits—spiced red plums and dark cherries—with an oaky and mineral core. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and precise, with balanced tannic structure and ripe, juicy richness across the mid-palate, finishing long. This wine will age well, as it shows power and a soft, silky elegance on the finish. Only 243 cases were produced.” Aubert Pinot Noir UV-SL Vineyard 2016 750ml $159 special, 4 bottles availableJeb Dunnuck 99 Points “The 2016 Pinot Noir UV-SL Vineyard flirts with perfect and is another incredible effort from the Sonoma Coast. Deeply colored, with ripe cherries, underbrush, black currants, graphite, blood orange, and forest floor notes, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, ample tannin, a big mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish. Despite being a rich, powerful wine, it shows remarkable elegance and purity, as well as a weightless, seamless texture. Brought up in 70% new French oak, drink it over the coming decade.”

Julian Haart “1,000l” Riesling 2020 750ml WAS $24 NOW $19, 7 bottles availableImporter Note “This is legally Trocken in 2020 and sourced from 25-year-old vines in the Grand Cru Goldtröpfchen vineyard. The “1,000L” is so-named because it is a wine that was, originally, a chosen Fuder – a 1,000L barrel. The entire barrel was bought, and that was that. The wines is always brisk, tense with high-toned citrus, good minerality.” Julian Haart Riesling Moselle 2021 750ml WAS $31.90 NOW $28 special, 4 bottles availableVom Boden Importer Note “The Moselle Riesling comes essentially from the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, with in addition grapes from the Wintricher Ohligsberg and Piesporter Gunterslay.” Hamacher “H” Pinot Noir WV 2018 750ml WAS $24 NOW $20.90 special, 18 bottles availableWinery Note “From bud break to harvest, we work closely with our growers and their dedicated crews to provide the best environment and growing conditions possible. Careful vineyard management combined with traditional minimalist handling in the winery, result in supple wines of balance and richness.” Hammer & Tongs Vermouth Sac’resine 750ml WAS $19 NOW $14.50, 8 bottles availableFrom the Producer “Sac’Resine is an original formula vermouth crafted with botanical resins of antiquity. These “Sacred Resins” were used as perfumes in rituals from birth to burial, prescribed medicinally both internally & externally, and were among the most valuable commodities dominating the ancient trade routes of South Asia and China. Hanna Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2020 750ml WAS $39 NOW $33 special, 26 bottles availableWine Enthusiast 93 Points “Black pepper and black olive nuances blend with black cherries and dark choc- olate in this medium- to full-bodied wine that includes 24% Malbec. An elegant feel, silky texture and nicely restrained flavors give the wine a charm all its own. Best through 2030.” Domaine D’henri Chablis L’homme Mort VV 2017 750ml WAS $47.50 NOW $41.90, 31 bottles availableWinery Note “Planted in 1970, this parcel reflects the nobility of the Fourchaume appellation, with notes of forest floor and a racy, balanced palate, underlined by a good acidity. The Kimmeridgian escarpment of Fourchaume is reputed to produce some of the best Chablis wines and the South West exposure of the vines means that they bask in the warm afternoon sun. Hirtzberger Gruner Velt Rotes Tor Smaragd 2018 750ml WAS $59 NOW $49 special, 13 bottles availableStuart Pigott 94 Points “The nose here has a very restrained and rocky feel with such intense aromas of ripe citrus fruit, pepper and pears. The palate is dry, sheer and linear with good, fresh acidity drive and a smoothly rendered finish. Drink or hold.” Cantina Horus Corda Pazza Rosso 2020 750ml WAS $29 NOW $24, 24 bottles availableImporter Notes “La Corda Pazza” was the title of a book published in 1970 by Leonardo Sciascia, a Sicilian by birth who was an influential critic, public intellectual, and playwright. It is an in-depth exploration of Sicily’s unique history and culture, one made more exceptional (and insular) due to its island geography “a crazy chord,” or corda pazza, of influences exerted by generations of invaders and colonizers.” Cantina Horus Grillo Sole E Terra 2021 750ml WAS $26 NOW $21.90 special, 12 bottles availableImporter Notes “First time we’ve brought in this wine but the response to the reds was so great we had to try the Grillo. From hillside vineyards at 170 meters in Ragusa. He sneaks about 10% of the wine into barrel to facilitate the aging potential of Grillo and give it just enough texture to reach escape velocity. (Love my Sicialian tank reds but the tank whites sometimes leave me wanting). The timing of the arrival is perfect. Just look outside your window and you’ll see. Go ahead.. take a look. It’s nice, isn’t it?” Cantina Horus Vittoria Frappato Sole E Terra 2021 750ml WAS $28 NOW $24, 18 bottles availableImporter Notes “Giuseppe Romano is the grower-winemaker — he’s the in-between neighbor of Giusto (COS) and Arianna Occhipinti, and many folks feel he is “the guy” who put Valle dell’Acate and Frappato on the map in decades past.” Cantina Horus Corda Pazza Rosso 2020 750ml WAS $29 NOW $24, 24 bottles availableImporter Notes “For those accustomed to bigger, darker, sappier expressions of Nero d’Avola (many in the ’90s and 2000s aimed for Shiraz-level intensity), this will be a revelation: It is medium-bodied, silky, and bright, more Burgundian in scale but resolutely Mediterranean in its flavor profile.”

Idiosyncratic. Eclectic. Authentic. These are just some of the words that describe Hans-Joseph Becker of JB Becker. He and his father before him pursued organic viticulture, natural yeasts, warm ferments, and dry wine production before it was cool. The wines, like the man behind them, are straightforward and yet strangely inscrutable. His wines are unfailingly honest. They present a bizarre vocabulary: dried earth and rocks, herbs, something vaguely subterranean, a savory, briny, smoky atmosphere that slowly reveals fine layers of bright citrus. They flaunt a rather prominent acidity that recalls the more nervy wines of the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer, though there is a weight, a density that speaks of the Rheingau. They seem to have more to do with great Chablis than with what we often think of as German Riesling. JB Becker Berg Bildstock Kabinett 2020 750ml $29 special, 6 bottles availableWine Advocate 92 Points “The 2020 Wallufer Berg Bildstock Riesling Kabinett is deep and pure on the bright, fresh and crunchy, saline nose. Bottled with 24 grams per liter of residual sugar, this is lush and juicy yet also fresh and piquant, persistently salty Kabinett with a long and stimulatingly grippy finish.” JB Becker Walkenberg Spatlese Trocken “AR” 2020 750ml $37 special, 8 bottles availableWine Advocate 92 Points “The 2020 Wallufer Walkenberg Riesling Spätlese trocken Alte Reben offers a pure, intense and complex, highly refined bouquet with clear and elegant fruit intertwined with very fine terroir aromas. Pure and enormously salty on the palate, this is a dense and tensioned yet also finessed and highly elegant Walkenberg with fine tannins and a long, complex finish. This is another highlight of the 2020 vintage that is shining bright and pure here.” JB Becker Walkenberg Kabinett Trocken 2020 750ml $31.90 special, 7 bottles availableWine Advocate 92 Points “The 2020 Wallufer Walkenberg Riesling Kabinett trocken offers a clear and delicately fruity bouquet with floral-scented apricot aromas. Pure, straight and fresh on the palate, this is a bone dry, crunchy and youthful Kabinett with crunchy phenols and just-ripe stone fruit. Stimulatingly crisp and salty on the finish.” JB Becker Walkenberg Spatlese Trocken 2020 750ml $33 special, 8 bottles availableWine Advocate 93 Points “The 2020 Wallufer Walkenberg Riesling Spätlese trocken opens with a fascinating, elegant and aromatic bouquet with perfectly ripe stone fruit aromas (white peach) intermingled with flinty notes. Fresh and vital on the first attack, this is dense and elegant, finely fruity, seriously structured and persistently saline and mouth-salivating Walkenberg that represents classic Rheingau Riesling at its best.” JB Becker Wallufer Riesling Trocken 2020 1L $27 special, 7 bottles availableWine Advocate 92 Points “The 2020 Wallufer Riesling Trocken shows clear fruit on the pure fresh and characterful nose. On the palate, this is a round, fresh and elegant, harmonious and juicy dry Riesling with a well-structured, stimulating saline and aromatic finish. Honestly, this is a gorgeous wine to start with here.”

Benanti Contessa Particella 587 Rsva Etna 2016 1.5L $249 special, 6 bottles availableVinous 95 Points “The 2016 Etna Rosso Serra della Contessa Particella No. 587 Riserva is dark and savory in the glass, grumbling up with notes of crushed rocks and ash that evolve further to reveal musky black currants, hints of licorice and dried violets.” Chateau De Pez Saint-Estephe 2018 1.5L $119 special, 5 bottles availableJeb Dunnuck 94 Points “From the team of Nicolas Glumineau at Pichon Comtesse de Lalande, the 2018 Château De Pez is a gorgeous 2018 that should be on every Bordeaux lover’s radar (and should be a great value as well). Notes of blackcurrants, blueberries, candied violets, and graphite define the bouquet, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, rockingly polished tannins, terrific purity, and a great finish. It’s terrific and is going to have 15-20 years or more of longevity. The blend is 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 49% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.” Clerico Langhe Rosse Arte 2011 1.5L $66 special, 34 bottles availableStephen Tanzer 91 Points “(90% nebbiolo and 10% barbera; aged for 18 months in new French oak): Good medium red. Perfumed aromas and flavors of plum, redcurrant, tobacco and spices. Intense and vibrant, with lovely inner-mouth aromatic lift. Very classy, delineated wine.” La Gerla Brunello Di Montalcino 2015 1.5L $119 special, 1 bottle availableWine Spectator 94 Points “Black cherry and black currant fruit is accented by tobacco, earth and mineral flavors in this sleek yet dense red. Balsamic elements of juniper, thyme and olive add depth as this cruises to a long finish. The potential lies in the excellent length. Best from 2023 through 2042. —B.S.” Lopez Heredia Tondonia Reserva Rioja 2001 1.5L $219 special, 1 bottle availableWine Advocate 96 Points ” I had the chance to taste a bottle of the 2001 Viña Tondonia Reserva 10 years after it was released, and the wine has evolved beautifully and quite slowly—at least that is the case for these bottles that have been kept in the winery for all these years. It’s austere and elegant, with balance and concentration, polished tannins and a chalky texture, long tasty and dry. This is lively and should continue developing in bottle for quite some time…” Lopez Heredia Tondonia Reserva Rioja 2004 1.5L $189 special, 2 bottles available“The 2004 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a completely different story. It is a worthy follower of the 2001 the greatest of the Viña Tondonia Reservas of recent times. It has the usual blend and usual levels of alcohol and acidity bottled after six years in oak barrels. The nose feels savory (if that’s possible?umami?) and developed with tertiary aromas and good balance between spices leathery notes cherries and balsamic notes of cigar box and incense. The palate is both round and crisp with refined tannins. It has very good balance with subtle acidity and very good persistence.” Lopez Heredia Tondonia Reserva Rioja 2005 1.5L $179 special, 2 bottles availableDecanter 96 Points “Traditional Rioja at its ageworthy best, the Tondonia red is a cuvée of Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha and 5% each of Graciano and Mazuelo. Leafy, gamey and sweet, with tangy acidity and a volatile lift. Drinking Window 2018 – 2025.” Montille Pommard Pezerolles 1er Cru 2016 1.5L $289 special, 3 bottles availableStephen Tanzer 91-93 Points “(from the north side of Pommard above Les Grands Epenots on active limestone soil; vinified with one-third whole clusters and aged in one-third new oak): Good dark red. Tight aromas of black cherry, redcurrant and rust (there’s a bit of iron in the soil here as well), lifted by a floral quality. Savory and fine-grained, with red berry flavors enlivened by saline minerality. Not a big wine but offers an attractive blend of sweet, savory and acidic elements. This minerally, salty wine finishes with big, mouth-dusting tannins.” Oddero Barolo Vigna Rionda 2007 1.5L $369 special, 1 bottle availableJames Suckling 96 Points “This is drinking wonderfully now with so much depth of fruit and lots of juicy character. Full body, layered and intense. Plenty of dark berry and chocolate. Fantastic. Drink or hold.” Peyrassol Le Clos Peyrassol Rose 2021 1.5L $149.95, 14 bottles availableVinous 94 Points “Vivid onion skin color. A highly perfumed and complex bouquet evokes fresh citrus and pit fruits, strawberry and pungent flowers, along with building mineral and succulent herb elements. Shows excellent clarity and depth to its juicy red fruit, nectarine and mango flavors, which are sweetened by a background of vanilla note. Finishes impressively long and silky, with the mineral and floral note resonating. “ Bollinger R.D. 2004 1.5L $519 special, 2 bottles availableWine Enthusiast 98 Points “Top 100 Cellar Selection in 2019. The wine’s name stands for recently disgorged and this vintage Champagne was taken off its lees in 2018. That gave many years for it to develop its depth of flavor, richness and beautifully memorable toasty flavors. Drink through 2028. -Roger Voss” Thibaud Boudignon Anjou Blanc 2020 1.5L $145 special, 2 bottles availableVinous 91 Points “Unlike his Savennières, the fruit for Boudignon’s 2020 Anjou Blanc is purchased. The result is a pure, clean wine with delectable purity. There are delicate flavors of just-ripe pineapple, citrus, nettles and a subtle hint of vanilla. It is fermented and aged in both 500-liter barrels and oval Stockinger ‘cigars’. A line of acidity pulls this wine through to a refined conclusion. It can be approached now for its fine fruit but will go on.” Brovia Barolo Garblet Sue 2015 1.5L $189 special, 3 bottles availableAntonio Galloni 94 Points “The 2015 Barolo Garblèt Sue’ is dense and powerful in the glass. A rush of black cherry, plum, lavender, iron and sage literally burst from the glass. Ample, full-bodied and intense, the Garblèt Sue’ is another stellar wine in this range. The typically incisive Garblèt Sue’ tannins are nearly buried by the sheer richness of the fruit. Today, the Garblèt Sue’ is distinguished by its wild, feral profile and huge core of fruit. In this vintage, the Garblèt is the overachiever in the range relative to how it shows in most vintages.” Brovia Barolo Villero 2015 1.5L $249 special, 5 bottles availableWine Advocate 94 Points “The 2015 Barolo Villero offers richness and darkness with fruit from Castiglione Falletto, and it’s one of the more intense wines I tasted within this selection. The Villero is a balanced and polished Barolo that opens to nicely integrated fruit and spice tones, expertly interwoven and united. The wine has a beautiful entry to the palate. Indeed, this pretty wine presented a united front, with seamless and graceful integration.” Clos Erasmus Laurel Priorat 2018 1.5L $149 special, 3 bottles availableWine Advocate 96 Points “The second wine here and one that is easier to drink, the 2018 Laurel was produced with fruit from the younger vines, a couple of barrels that are declassified from Clos Erasmus and the Cabernet Sauvignon, more or less 70% Garnacha and 15% each Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. It has good ripeness and still a ph of 3.3. It fermented mostly in oak vats and 2,000-liter concrete vats with indigenous yeasts and matured for 18 months in 20,000-liter oak and concrete vats, second use barriques and some clay amphorae.” Clos Erasmus Priorat 2020 1.5L $599 special, 1 bottles availableWine Advocate 100 Points “The still young and primary 2020 Clos Erasmus feels very floral and ethereal (within Priorat and Clos Erasmus); it’s a fresher and lighter expression but without being weak. It’s still a baby that needs to burn the baby fat (there are still some lactic notes from the malolactic in barrel). The wine is always around 3.2 or 3.3 pH and has some 15% to 15.5% alcohol, but the sensation this year is of a much fresher, more balanced and elegant wine. This should make an elegant bottle of mature Priorat with a decade in bottle, and I guess it will be long lived.

Abreu Madrona Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 750ml $599 special, 1 bottle availableRobert Parker 100 Points ” While I am not surprised that the 2001 Thorevilos turned out to be perfect, the 2001 Madrona Ranch was more of an eye-opener in that it has become even more extraordinary than I predicted eight years ago. A prodigious wine, with complex notes of subtle barbecue smoke intermixed with blueberry pie, black currant liqueur, acacia flowers, lead pencil shavings, and sweet foresty floor notes, this wine builds incrementally with layer upon layer of fruit, glycerin and concentration. The finish goes well past a minute, and the wine is full-bodied and deep, with wonderfully sweet tannin. It is still an adolescent in terms of its total evolution, but it is irresistible simply because of the flawless nature of the wine and incredible perfume and flavor intensity. Simply amazing!” Aubert Pinot Noir UV-SL Vineyard 2016 750ml $159 special, 4 bottles availableJeb Dunnuck 99 Points “The 2016 Pinot Noir UV-SL Vineyard flirts with perfect and is another incredible effort from the Sonoma Coast. Brought up in 70% new French oak, drink it over the coming decade.” Hundred Acre Few & Far Between Cabernet 2013 750ml $719 special, 3 bottles availableWine Advocate 100 Points “The medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Few and Far Between comes charging out of the gate with intense notes of crushed red and black currants, black cherries and mulberries over a crème de cassis and mincemeat core plus suggestions of baking spices and fragrant earth. Full-bodied, bold and oh-so-decadent, the palate features a very firm, velvety frame with layer upon layer of spiced black berries and a compelling earthy undercurrent, finishing with fantastic length and perfume.” Hundred Acre Fortification 2005 750ml $399 special, 1 bottle availableWine Advocate 100 Points “Medium tawny colored, the 2005 Fortification hits the ground running with a profoundly scented nose of blueberry compote, plum preserves, baked blackcurrants and black licorice with touches of coffee beans, dark chocolate, mincemeat pie and scorched earth plus a touch of Chinese five spice. Full-bodied, super concentrated and wonderfully opulent in the mouth, the unctuous black fruit layers are sparked by a myriad of exotic spices with fantastic harmony and a finish that just goes on and on.” Hundred Acre Kayli Morgan Vineyard Cabernet 2009 750ml $529.95 special, 3 bottle availablesWine Advocate 96 Points “Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan Vineyard gives up bold blackcurrant cordial, blackberry compote and raspberry pie scents with hints of chocolate-covered cherries, roses and lilacs plus hints of charcuterie and yeast extract. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is wonderfully elegant, with wonderful vivacity and perfume and a satiny texture with a very long finish.” Sine Qua Non Grenache Female 2013 750ml $319 special, 2 bottles availableWine Advocate 98 Points “Showing similar to a previous bottle tasted in Colorado, the 2013 Grenache Female (78% Grenache, 19% Syrah and 3% Mourvedre) is more high toned and pretty than the 2014, with perfumed notes of black raspberries, licorice, herbes de Provence and violets. Similar on the palate to the 2014, yet perhaps with a touch more tannin, give this beauty a few years and drink it through 2033.” Sine Qua Non Resiste White 2013 750ml $219.95 special, 1 bottle availableWine Advocate 97 Points “Scheduled to be released in November 2015, the 2013 White Wine Resiste is a sensational white from California that’s made from 45% Roussanne, 26% Chardonnay, 14% Petite Manseng, 10% Viognier and 5% Marsanne that spent 19 months in 46% new French oak and the balance in concrete eggs and used barrels. Possessing rock-star levels of richness and texture on the palate, with full-bodied depth and power that never seems heavy or cumbersome, it has classic SQN white notes of buttered golden fruits, honeysuckle, honeycomb, toast and white flowers. Unctuous, full-flavored and still lively and fresh, it needs 2-3 years of cellaring and will keep for two decades.” Sine Qua Non Trouver L’arene 2015 750ml $319 special, 1 bottle availableWine Advocate 100 Points “Composed of 80.5% Syrah, 7% Petite Syrah, 7% Mourvèdre, 2% Grenache and 3.5% Viognier, all sourced from estate vineyards—37% The Third Twin, 36% Eleven Confessions and 27% Cumulus—the 2015 Syrah Trouver L’Arene was made using 34% whole cluster and has a deep purple-black color with intense cassis, black plums and black cherries scents plus hints of anise, violets, sage and tar, with wafts of savory/smoked meat suggestions. Full-bodied, this voluptuous beauty is seriously singing in the mouth, belting out vibrant red and black fruit flavor layers, all framed by very fine, rounded, ripe tannins and a wonderful freshness, finishing with persistent perfumed fruit and a spring in its step.” Ridge Monte Bello Santa Cruz Mountains 2012 750ml $279 special, 2 bottles availableVinous 97+ Points “The 2012 is a racy, voluptuous Monte Bello built on a core of sweet red fruit, with striking perfume, silky tannins and fabulous overall balance. The 2012 is of course an infant, and the new oak is still evident. As Vinous readers know, Monte Bello is a wine that really should not be touched until its tenth birthday, and even that requires an optimistic view. The 2012 has been a consistently brilliant wine. Today, it is once again stellar.” Ridge Monte Bello Santa Cruz Mountains 2013 750ml $349 special, 1 bottle availableWine Advocate 100 Points “The 2013 Monte Bello is a very special vintage for this great wine. Amazingly, it has yet to shut down, unfurling in the glass to reveal a bouquet of black raspberries, cassis, rich espresso roast, cigar wrapper, subtle black truffle and burning embers that has already integrated its 100% new oak remarkably completely. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, powerful and multidimensional, with a lavishly textural attack that segues into a stunningly layered, richly structured mid-palate endowed with incredible depth and concentration underpinned by succulent acids. The finish is long, vibrant and beautifully delineated. The 2013 is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot, and it attained 13.6% natural alcohol. Analytically, this ranks as one of the most tannic vintages of Monte Bello ever produced, but the tannins are of such high quality and cloaked in such a wealth of fruit that Ridge forwent their habitual egg white fining this year—beginning a trend that has continued since. This profound Monte Bello will begin to blossom as it reaches age ten and should prove practically immortal.”
