Matello ‘Whistling Ridge’ White, Ribbon Ridge 2014 750ML ($24.95) $19.90 special
Winery note
“Co-fermented from Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Gewurztraminer vines. The incredibly shallow soils at Whistling Ridge imbue this wine with transparency, minerality, and weightless power. A mélange of fruit flavors, it’s the minerality that sets it apart.”

Goodfellow Pinot Blanc Noble Selection, Fir Crest Vineyard, Yamhill-Carlton AVA 2013 375ML ($19.95) $16.60 special
VinopolNote:
A late-harvest selection of botrytis-affected Pinot Blanc from the Fir Crest Vineyard.  Dessert-style.
Winery note “Tucked into Oregon’s coastal range, Fir Crest vineyard is like the Last Homely House in Tolkien’s classic Lord of the Rings trilogy.  Isolated with rising slopes on two sides, and the welcoming valley in the distance, shallow sea bottom soils give the fruit depth and intensity typical of Yamhill-Carlton sites, but the cool influence of the mountains swirls red fruit flavors in amongst the darker earth tones.  Whites were planted in 1995.  Soil: Uplifted sedimentary marine siltstone (Willakenzie).  Dry farmed, Live Certified.”

Elk Cove Vineyards Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($19.95) $16 special
Wine Enthusiast 92 points
“Beautifully styled, this wine brings a solid blend of citrus, cucumber, tangerine and melon flavors. The length and balance are there for further aging, but the stunningly good flavors encourage near-term drinking.”

WASHINGTON
L’Ecole No. 41 Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley 2013 750ML ($31.95)
$28 special
Winery Notes–
“With an elegant, old world structure, this sophisticated Cabernet shows savory aromas of dark fruit, rose petal, and cocoa. A robust core of blueberry and plum with notes of currant and cedary tobacco are framed with polished tannins on a rich, harmonious finish.”

CALIFORNIA
Saintsbury Chardonnay, Carneros 2013 750ML ($24.95)
$21.90 special
Winery Notes–
“Zesty notes of lime, kumquats and green pineapple, with heady powdered lily aromas. On the palate this wine is energetic from the start with tangy citrus, white peach and cloves.”
Bootleg Red Blend, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($39.95) $29 special
Robert Parker 90 points
“An intriguing offering from the Jackson family, the 2012 Proprietary Red this innovative blend of 36% Merlot, 20% Petite Sirah, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Syrah and Zinfandel is outstanding. The wine comes from multiple vineyards in Northern California in Napa Valley and is a reasonably good-sized cuvée of 5,000 cases. The wine shows plenty of peppery, meaty, blackcurrant fruit, sweet cherries, loamy soil undertones, plenty of licorice and spice box. This is a very Mediterranean styled, deep, fleshy red wine to drink over the next 2-3 years.” RP

Byron Nielson Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Maria Valley 2013 750ML ($39.95) $29 special
Case-6 Byron Nielson Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Maria Valley 2013 750ML ($219.95)
$139 special
Wine Advocate 92+ points
“Another terrific wine is the 2013 Pinot Noir Nielson Vineyard, which was completely destemmed and aged 16 months in 40% new French oak. Still showing its oak elevage, with lots of caramelized cherry, black raspberry, sweet oak and spice, it hits the palate with a seamless, silky, gorgeously pure texture that carries plenty of fruit and finishes clean and dry, with notable tannic grip. Give it a year or two in the cellar to integrate its oak and drink bottles through 2021.”

Fortress Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County 2012 750ML ($24.95) $18 special

FRANCE-BURGUNDY
Bouchard Pere & Fils Clos de la Mousse, Beaune Premier Cru 2010 750ML ($69.95)
$54 special
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 91 points
“Bright medium red. Pungent aromas of red cherry, raspberry, licorice, fresh herbs and minerals, plus a whiff of leather. Juicy, intense and taut, with noteworthy energy giving a light touch to the red berry and salty mineral flavors. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and noteworthy persistence. Conveys an impression of noble rusticity and yet this rather polished Beaune wine has class too. Riper and finer in bottle than it appeared to be from the barrel.”
FRANCE-RHONE
Pierre Gonon Saint-Joseph Les Oliviers, Rhone  2014 750ML ($89.95)
$79 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 93 points
“Light, bright yellow. Poached pear, white peach, honey and lemon pith on the intensely perfumed, mineral-accented nose. Pliant, deeply concentrated pit and citrus fruit and honeysuckle flavors are complemented by hints of succulent herbs and fennel; bitter quinine adds back-end cut. Closes with powerful punch and serious persistence, leaving behind a note of candied citrus fruits. This bottling has an admirable track record for cellaring.”

Pierre Gonon Saint-Joseph Rouge 2014 750ML ($89.95) $79 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 93-94 points
“Opaque ruby. A heady, smoke- and spice-tinged bouquet evokes fresh dark fruits, olive paste and potpourri, while an olive nuance comes up slowly. Fine-grained and sharply focused on the palate, offering concentrated black and blue fruit flavors that spread out and become spicier on the back half. Powerful yet graceful in character, finishing with outstanding energy and smooth, harmonious tannins that fold quickly into the wine’s energetic fruit.”

Chateau de la Gardine Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2012 750ML ($44.95) $33 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points
“Vivid ruby. Mineral-accented cherry, raspberry and licorice scents are complemented by a deeper note of dark chocolate. Stains the palate with sweet red and dark berry flavors complicated by notes of candied lavender and coconut. Smoothly melds power and vivacity, finishing on a gently tannic note, with very good persistence and lingering floral character.”

Domaine Eric et Joel Durand Cornas Premices 2012 750ML ($37.95) $28 special
Wine Advocate 93 points
“The 2012 Cornas Premices knocks it out of the park with its chocolaty dark fruits, leather, crushed rock and licorice aromas and flavors. Dense, full-bodied and concentrated, with a hedonistic, voluptuous slant, drink it over the coming 6-7 years.”

Domaine Berthet-Rayne Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2013 750ML ($29.95) $26 special
Wine Advocate–
“Excelling in the vintage and a charming, straightforward effort that doesn’t try too hard (and is better for it), the 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Tradition gives up lots of currants, black raspberries, Provençal garrigue and spice to go with a medium-bodied, supple, easy drinking style on the palate. It has lots to like and will drink nicely for 5-6 years.”

Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Taillepieds, Volnay Premier Cru 2012 1.5L ($149.95) $119 special
Antonio Galloni 91-93+ points
“A layered, totally exquisite wine, the 2012 Volnay Taillepieds impresses for its balance above all else. The aromas and flavors are beautifully detailed and nuanced in a Taillepieds that is all about crystalline purity. This tasting catches the 2012 in a slightly raw, unpolished state, but nothing a little time in bottle won’t take care of.”

Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Pitures, Volnay Premier Cru 2012 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Pitures, Volnay Premier Cru 2012 1.5L ($149.95)
$119 special
Antonio Galloni 91-93 points
“The estate’s 2012 Volnay Pitures is the most massively tannic of these wines. Dark, rich and powerful, the 2012 is laced with black cherries, new leather, cloves and menthol, all supported by huge, incisive tannins. I would give the tannins a few years to soften, but the Pitures is likely to remain intense and even a bit rustic, especially in comparison to the other 2012s here.”

Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Clos des Chenes, Volnay Premier Cru 2012 750ML ($79.95) $69 special
Antonio Galloni 92-94 points
“The estate’s 2012 Volnay Clos des Chênes is wonderfully complete. A wine that plays across all dimensions, the 2012 offers expressive aromatics, deep fruit and plenty of underlying structure. The style is dark, powerful and brooding, with perhaps a bit less finesse than the Caillerets and Taillepieds, but a level of explosiveness that is captivating. This was the last parcel to be harvested in 2012.”

Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Les Caillerets, Volnay Premier Cru 2012 1.5L ($179.95) $149 special
Antonio Galloni 92-94 points
“The 2012 Volnay Caillerets is the most impressive of these 2012s from Francois Bitouzet. Here the flavors are deep, layered and beautifully resonant from start to finish. Plum, smoke, black cherry, licorice and spices wrap around the palate as this fleshy, deep Volnay shows off its pure class and pedigree. The finish is long, generous and inviting, but the 2012 is a wine for the cellar. Patience will be rewarded. In 2012 there is just one barrel of the Caillerets instead of the customary three.”

Case-12 Chateau Grand Village, Bordeaux Superieur 2010 750ML ($299.95)
$259 special
James Suckling 90 points
“A soft and silky wine with a hazelnut, chocolate and berry character. It’s full-bodied, with lovely depth and fruit. Gorgeous finish. Tangy and pretty. 75% Cabernet Franc and 25% Merlot. Drink now.” JS

Chateau La Grave a Pomerol Trignant de Boisset, Pomerol 2010 750ML ($99.95) $79 special
Wine Spectator 94 points
“Broad and creamy, with plum, boysenberry and blackberry fruit carried by seamless, polished structure. Despite the lush flavors, this is serious a wine, boasting a strong graphite spine that strides through the finish and lovely flecks of anise and black tea hanging in the background for added range. Should age well. Best from 2015 through 2030.”
James Suckling 94 points “Wonderful charming nose with wild strawberries, milk chocolate and raspberries. Opens up with eucalyptus and licorice. So soft and velvety on the palate with a beautiful finesse-driven texture. Full and with silky tannins. Long and very enjoyable. Drink from 2016.”

ITALY-TUSCANY
Felsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2010 1.5L ($89.95)
$69 special
Wine Advocate 93 points
“The 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva is host to a beautiful mix of black mineral, fruit, dried mint and eucalyptus. The wine shows elegant evolution in the glass and backs it up with dry, polished tannins. This is a stunning effort available at a reasonable price. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028. This is one of the nicest collections of new releases by Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s Felsina. At the edge of the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi denominations, the estate counts 475 hectares, of which 61 are planted with vineyard.” WA
Antonio Galloni 92+ points “Classicists, on the other hand, will flip out over the 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva. Black cherry, plum, smoke and menthol notes all jump out of the glass. The 2010 is translucent yet also rich, powerful and impeccably balanced. Ideally readers should cellar the 2010 for at least a few years, but that is going to be difficult considering how beautiful the wine is today.” AG

Felsina Berardenga Chianti Classico DOCG 2012 1.5L ($59.95) $49 special
James Suckling 93 points
“There are mushrooms on the nose of this Chianti Classico, but these soon give way to subtle, deep aromas of blackberry crumble with hints of mint and ivy. It soon fills up the mouth with beautifully dense fruit and fine tannins, nutty, woody undertones and long finish. Gorgeous now, but better in 2016.”
Antonio Galloni 89+ points “The 2012 Chianti Classico is a great introduction to the wines of Felsina. Deeply varietal and expressive to the core, the 2012 graces the palate with the essence of Sangiovese from the southern part of the Chianti Classico zone. Sweet tobacco, underbrush, menthol, licorice and black cherries flow through to the finish, but it is the wine’s sheer balance that impresses most of all. This is a gorgeous mid-weight Chianti Classico to drink over the next decade plus.” AG

Isole e Olena Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2006 1.5L ($499.95) $389 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 97 points
“The 2006 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a controversial wine and for good reason. Proprietor Paolo De Marchi was initially opposed to the idea of introducing the Gran Selezione category above the Chianti Classico Riserva. But more than a year ago, the Institute of Masters of Wine held a special dinner in Florence and producers were invited to pour only Gran Selezione wines. Paolo had an amazing barrel of Sangiovese put aside for a commemorative wine to celebrate his 30th anniversary as a winemaker. He hoped to dedicate that wine as a special limited release. Because he also wanted to pour something of his at the Masters of Wine dinner, he declassified the wine and re-registered it as a Gran Selezione. This also explains why it is from an older vintage. Most of his peers inaugurated this new category with the 2010 vintage. Only 1,800 bottles were made (of which 500 are put aside for the family’s personal use) and the blend consists of Sangiovese with 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Syrah. “I love Chianti Classico and I love super Tuscans,” says Paolo De Marchi. “This wine is a crossover of the two.” The wine shows gorgeous ripeness with brooding dark fruit, depth and extreme balance. This is a wine that makes a statement upfront both in terms of the quality of the aromas and its overall integrity and persistency.”

“Palish green-yellow. Crushed stone, lemon-lime, hazelnut and a whiff of leesy complexity on the explosive nose. Boasts terrific density and sucrosite but with excellent acid backbone and firm minerality providing lift and shape. Best today on the long finish, which features palate-staining red grapefruit and crushed stone flavors. These 50-year-old vines are planted in deep soil, but there’s a lot of minerality in the subsoil, notes Hervet. Offers superb potential, but the 2008 may be even better.”ST

“Here too the wood treatment is quite deft which allows the cool Granny Smith apples, pear, wet stone and spice scents to shine. There is also a seductive mouth feel to the broad-shouldered, supple and round flavors that brim with dry extract before displaying plenty of power and punch on the seriously long finish. This is easily the most backward wine in the range at present yet the impression is unusually fine, both in the context of the appellation but also in the context of this wine in general as it’s usually more robust. Be all of that as it may, this is very, very promising.”BH

“This is notably more refined aromatically than the Beaux Bruns with a pure and relatively high-toned nose composed primarily of various red berries with hints of plum and violets. “Bright red-ruby. Highly perfumed aromas of black raspberry, mocha and coffee. Very ripe on the palate but juicy, tight and gripping, with superb energy to its dark berry, floral and mineral flavors. Finishes with some superripe notes and firm tannic spine. Really refreshes the palate on the very long finish. This really grew on me.”

“Here the nose is more deeply pitched compared to that of the La Combe d’Orveau with ripe yet cool red berry liqueur, earth and wet stone aromas. There is outstanding delineation to the more powerful, intense and mineral-inflected flavors where the firm but ripe tannins are almost completely buffered by the copious dry extract that really coats the palate on the balanced and strikingly persistent finish. I very much like this.”BH

“Faiveley’s 2011 Corton Clos des Corton is a fitting conclusion to this great night of wine and food. Intensely saline and pointed, the 2011 impresses for its pure energy and tension. The flavors are vibrant and impeccably delineated in a Burgundy that is all about finesse. This is a great showing from the Clos des Corton.” AG
Stephen Tanzer 94 points “Medium red.  Ineffable nose and palate offer red fruits, minerals, spices and flowers, complicated by game, earth and leather.  Sweet, concentrated and very intense, boasting outstanding density and a fine-grained texture, with salty minerality giving the wine a weightless impression that’s remarkable considering its density.  A strong tannic spine and brisk acidity energize and draw out the finish of this sharply delineated, pristine grand cru.” ST

“Bright medium red.  Lively aromas of redcurrant, red cherry and pepper, plus a whiff of game.  Shows strong graphite and pepper notes in the mouth, but the wine’s fruit is currently suppressed by sulfur.  Finishes saline, dense and chewy, with more obvious tannins than the Chambolle cuvees.  This needs the sweetening influence of a racking.” ST

“A complete and serious wine for the vintage with wonderful density of fruit and ultra-fine tannins. Full-bodied, muscular and very long. Better in 2018.” JS
Burghound 93-95 points “Don’t miss! A generous dollop of moderately toasty oak mixes with the highly layered nose of black cherry, cassis, warm earth and an impressive array of sauvage and underbrush notes. There is excellent richness to the overtly powerful and muscular flavors that possess an imposing sense of scale that continues onto the textured and mouth coating finish. Like several of the wines in the range in 2013 this is a big but not really massive wine that retains a sense of proportion even though the underlying structure is quite firm. This will need plenty of patience however.” BH

“A notably spicy and attractively floral-suffused nose features notes of plum, rose petal, violets and ripe red currants. There is a seductive texture to the openly rich and generously proportioned flavors that retain a lovely sense of vibrancy on the lightly mineral-inflected finish that delivers both fine depth and length. “Bernkasteler Badstube is a small Grosslage; the component single-sites are distinct from one another, but one can organize them thus: LAY stands alone. DOKTOR-GRABEN (at least the good parts of Graben!) stand together, and MATHEISBILDCHEN-BRATENHÖFCHEN stand together, and give us what we see now; heavier understructure, not quite as tensile, due to richer soil, and signature flavors of kirsch and almost Pouilly-Fumé flint; the piquant exotics of the Mosel. Typically, they are medium in body.”

“The 2006 Bernkastler Badstube Riesling Beerenauslese smells of liqueur-like, jellied, vanilla- and chocolate-covered purple plums and black cherries. The implosive palate concentration though is simply beyond “liqueur-like” and into realms I can’t recall. Strong brown spices, herbal concentrates add complexity and a buttery, creamy texture does not prevent this wine from preserving the most remarkable clarity of jellied pit fruit concentration, photo-electric brilliance of fruit acids lighting the way to an endless finish. It may not be the most complex Beerenauslese today, but give it time! Is this a “fifty year” wine … “seventy”…? All that matters is to decide whether you want to greedily take it with you to the grave or pass some on. The Germans have an expression: “So was kurz vorm Sterben” – “to experience such a thing shorly before dying.” This wine is one of those things. ”

“Riesling and slate flavors on the nose, the 2012 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese demonstrates the noblesse of the vineyard that too often seems to sail in the shadow of the adjacent Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Curiously, the wine seems less sweet on the palate than the Spätlese, although it contains almost 83 gram of residual sugar. However, this late harvested (November 9), 8.5% alcohol Auslese has such an intensity and complexity, precision, piquancy and a lingering salinity that the unfermented sugar is bitten away. “RP

Selbach-Oster Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 2014 750ML ($27.95) Was $20.90, Now $18, 20 bottles available
Grapelive 91 points
“At 7.5% alcohol and with beautiful mineral spice the latest Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett from Johannes Selbach shines brightly and feels fresh and opulent, almost creamy, in the mouth. This is pretty stuff, it shows fine balance and has a wonderful mix of rose petal perfume, saline/brine, salty/flint stoniness and a contrast of sweet and tangy fruits with loads of terroir character. The 2014 vintage was extremely difficult with lots of stresses on the growers to make healthy grapes, but the hard work paid off in the end with surprising rewards, especially with Kabinett and Spatlese in the Mosel doing amazingly well, these lightly sweet examples show the best at this stage, while the Trockens (dry styles) will certainly have the upper hand in the 2015 vintage. 2014 is a vintage of delicacy and heightened aromatics, with Selbach’s Wehlener Sonnenuhr showing this to perfection, the nose has a mix of pure rose petal and rose water as well as exotic spices, sea breeze, a hint of hemp/tea and dried honey leading to a lime/mango and fleshy stone fruit peachy palate with shale and river stones. While a Kabinett, this Riesling gathers a bit of weight with air and finishes with a succulent decedent sweetness with juicy apricot and white flowers, while juicy/crunchy acidity keeps it vibrant and crisp, very well judged and poised. From mixed slate slopes on the sunny side of the river the Wehlenner is ripe with yellow fruits, elegantly spiced and steely focused. This should age nicely, but can really be enjoyed as is, a very fine Spring and Summer white, lively, classic and refreshing.”
Wine Advocate 90 points “Entirely fermented and aged in a three-year-old fuder (Selbach), which gives a very distinguished style compared to the other Kabinett wines, the 2014 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett displays ripe and intense fruit with just a hint of new oak and corresponding spices. Round and creamy, with some oak tannins and a finely mineral acidity, this Wehlener Riesling is a completely other character compared to the ones from Zeltingen; it is more smooth, more sweet and generous, and more charming–but certainly has a piquant and salty finish. This Kabinett has been bottled with 52 grams of unfermented sugar and 7.5% alcohol. I would recommend keeping this Kabinett for five or more years.”

“Bright in color the two-starred 7.5% alcohol 2013 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese ** is an intensely (noble) sweet and creamy-textured selection, which was picked on November 1 and is made for future generations. “As the dry wine, the sweet 8.5% alcohol 2012 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is more delicate and subtle on the nose compared to the relative of the Schlossberg. Picked eight days earlier than the latter, the Sonnenuhr is very sweet on the palate as well, but reveals more finesse and raciness, more Spiel and elegance. It is a stimulating and mineral-flavored wine, which I would not serve (or drink) before 2025.”RP
Stephen Tanzer 91 points “Lovely floral, peach and hazelnut aromas, with a twist of acacia blossom. Delicate apricot on the palate, enlivened by a bracing citrus character. Finishes alluringly, with slate, lemon oil and a hint of clove and excellent length.” ST

Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Himmelreich Riesling Auslese 2006 750ML ($24.95) Was $28, Now $19, 20 bottles available
Wine Advocate 89 points
“The lightest in this year’s Selbach caravan of Auslesen is their 2006 Zeltinger Himmelreich Riesling Auslese. Lemon, apple blossom, clover, and subtle suggestions of red berries and honey completely belie – in their delicacy and freshness – what one expects of the vintage. A suggestion of creaminess is allied to dynamic notes of juicy apple and red currant, brown spices, and faintly sizzling citrus zest pungency. Overall, the palate impression is more aggressive and less refined than the nose. This needs time to coordinate its elements and harness its high-strung energy, but that is a good omen in and of itself, and I have little doubt one can follow this with pleasure for 20 years.”

“Surprisingly, the ashen smokiness and cyanic apple-pit piquancy that I so often associate with Schlossberg come out in the nose of Selbach-Oster’s “two-star” 2010 Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Auslese to an extent unequalled by any other wines from that site in this particular collection. Dense and chewy, this suggests cider with lots of residual apple skin and laced with char, crushed stone, apple pips, and cinnamon. A brown butter savor adds compellingly to the striking complexity of a gripping finish. I would expect this to be worth following for 20-25 years.”WA

“The 2014 Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Kabinett offers a coolish, pure and stony bouquet with herbs and bright, healthy Riesling fruits. Light and elegant on the palate, with a nice transparency and finesse, this is a lovely, pure, piquant and mineral Riesling with a finely juicy mid-palate and a stimulatingly pure, salty and stunningly persistent finish. Excellent!”
Mosel Fine Wines 91+ points “This still quite reduced wine delivers a gorgeous nose of pear, cumin and spices on the nose and a beautifully reduced feel of herbs on the palate. The wine is comparatively light yet packed with intense minerals and greengage infused fruits in the crisp and beautifully mouth-watering finish. This is still on the reduced side of life but there is everything here for a proper old-style Spätlese from the 1990s in the making here! This is a great effort, with plenty of upside potential. 2024-2044” MFW

“Carob and toasted nuts inflect baked apple and vanilla on the nose of Selbachs’ block-picked 2011 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Rotlay, which comes to the palate expansive, creamy, and buoyant (at 8.5% alcohol), its apple joined by almost overripe Persian melon. Hints of pip and botrytis bitterness add interest, but there is not the subtle interaction of flavors or the layer of primary juiciness that rendered the corresponding Anrecht bottling so memorable, but instead a more dominantly honeyed, soothingly rich personality. This long-finishing beauty may well – as its author suggests – just need some time to reveal its multiple layers.”

“Always made with botrytis grapes, the 2013 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Loibner Vinothekfullung offers a very clear and intense, though noble and fresh, aroma of honeydew melon, pineapples and hints of lychee. Very rich in extract and highly concentrated on the palate, this opulent yet still well-balanced wine is one to be enjoyed in small sips rather than in bottles (at least when it’s so young). Pure and elegant on the palate, the Schütt Riesling combines complexity and intensity with elegance and persistence for a great and expressive Riesling monument of the Wachau. Weingut Emmerich Knoll ‘Vinothekfullung’ Loibner Riesling Smaragd 750ML ($99.95) Was $79, Now $66, 23 bottles available
David Schildknecht–Vinous 93 points
“Marine breeze and a slight sweatiness in the nose are joined by high-toned mintiness and nuances of peach and nectarine that then lusciously inform the full, faintly oily palate. Pithy pit piquancy serves for welcome counterpoint and grapefruit for zesty and vivacious juiciness. For all of its almost honeyed richness, this wine’s finishing penetration is downright rapier-like, displaying an alluring interchange with bright citrus, glowingly cyanic fruit pit, and cooling green herbal notes. It originated in a portion of Loibenberg where there was considerable fog and trapping of moisture, explained Knoll Senior, and consequently a higher instance of botrytis. I continue to find it slightly disconcerting that it is precisely the botrytis-influenced wines that get chosen for labeling as Knoll Vinothekfüllungen. That said, the present example is certainly impressive on those terms.”

Westrey Abbey Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2013 750ML ($44.95) Was $38, Now $33, 16 bottles available
Winery note
“In 2013 Abbey Ridge produced a beautiful classic Dundee Hills wine! Harvested on October 8th under beautiful skies, we received fruit with good tannin development, terrific acidity and delicate fruit flavors. The only down-side was that we received less than a ton per acre. On the nose there is the signature of Abbey Ridge Vineyard: high tone crushed-raspberry fruit with a layering of a floral lavender/lilac and undercurrent of earth and oak. On the palate the wine continues to show excellent sweet fruit expression. Raspberries sweet-exotic spice, and earthy texturally rich fruit.  The balance and completeness of this wine is expressed from the very first sip through to the last drop.  A wine truly distinguished by its terroir.  After thirteen days in the fermentor, the must was pressed, and racked directly to barrel. Of the four barrels, one was new (25% new oak) and the remainder was a blend of one-year-old and neutral wood.  After an indigenous malo-lactic, the wine was lightly sulfured racked to the bottling line and bottled after 12 months without fining or filtration.”

“Justice is located in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA next to Bethel Heights Vineyard.  At an elevation of around 500 feet, the vine rows face due south on Nekia soil with a sedimentary subsoil. Showing the weight and brilliant color that is typical of the 2013 vintage, this wine explodes from the glass. On the nose one is invited to taste through aromas of marionberry, raspberry, red-current, earth, and a hint of a floral note.  The entry shows big berry fruit, with excellent weight and a refined structure.  As the roots continue deeper into the sedimentary subsoil, the fruit expression of Justice has moved toward darker fruit and notes of mineral and chalk. This six-barrel lot had one new barrel, two one-year-old barrels with the balance neutral wood.  It was racked once in the spring of 2014 with inert gas after an indigenous malo-lactic. We bottled it unfined and unfiltered at the end of September 2014 after 12 months in oak. 147 cases produced.”

Violin Pinot Noir Eola Amity Hills 2013 750ML ($49.95) Was $41.90, Now $33, 3 bottles available
Winemaker’s note
“A wine of intense power and perfume that highlights the best characteristics of this AVA in the North Willamette Valley.  The moderating impact of marine breezes is a result of its vicinity to the Van Duzer Corridor, the low point in the Coast Range that funnels weather from the Ocean, providing superior acid retention and consistency in the quality and maturity of fruit.  This three barrel selection consists of two barrels from Eola Springs Vineyard and one barrel from Methven Family Vineyard.  Floral perfume and dark berry fruits come out of the glass first with smokey spice and strawberry coursing underneath.  Mouthwatering, juicy attack with fantastic concentration and dark cherry flavors coating the palate.  Finish turns a bit more savory with oak spice, wild brambly fruits and earth mixing well.  Firm, structural tannins persist throughout, and give the wine great poise and nerve on the lengthy, fruit driven finish.  Aged on lees for 15 months in 100% French oak barrels, 33% new.”

“A blend from all five of the vineyard sources including: Eola Springs Vineyard, Methven Family Vineyard, Solena Estate, First Man Vineyard, and Sunny Mountain Vineyard.   Loads of spice and forest floor mingle with strawberry, darker berry fruits and floral tones in the nose.  Juicy on entry with ample weight and structure to balance mouthwatering acidity.  Firm tannins and savory sweet spice carry the wine to a long, lingering finish with red and black fruits present throughout.  Aged on lees for approximately 14 months in 100% French oak barrels, 25% new.”

“Vivid ruby-red.  Deeply pitched dark berry preserve, cola and incense aromas show very good energy, with a smoky quality emerging as the wine opens in the glass.  On the palate, juicy blackberry and cherry compote flavors are lifted and sharpened by a zesty mineral nuance and a hint of fresh flowers.  Sweet vanilla and berry liqueur notes build on the finish, which is firmed by youthful, deftly integrated tannins. ” ST
Brick House Vineyards Select Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2013 750ML ($37.95) Was $31.90, Now $28, 7 bottles available
Winemaker Notes
“When Mother Nature offers a bountiful year, we routinely bottle this entry level Pinot Noir. As the name implies, the “Select” is a selection of barrels representing all the vineyard blocks on the farm at the discretion of the winemaker. The most easy-going and approachable of all our Pinot Noirs, the “Select” is a moderately priced, estate grown wine and a worthy accompaniment to a casual meal of salmon, lamb or wild game.”

‘Bright ruby-red. Smoky cherry and black raspberry aromas are sharpened by white pepper and minerals. Shows very good clarity and depth on the palate, offering sweet red and dark berry flavors and a hint of bitter chocolate. Closes with repeating smokiness, a hint of vanilla and even tannins. I suspect that this sexy pinot will hold nicely for at least another four or five years but it’s also pretty easy to drink now.” JR

Wine Enthusiast 94 points –Editor’s Choice–
“Here is a powerful young wine with concentrated plum and cherry fruit. It’s beautifully built around perfectly ripened tannins that provide solid support without being intrusive. Compact and well proportioned, it lingers with highlights of espresso grounds, dark chocolate and black tea.”
Wine Spectator 91 points “This earthy style plays a woodsy, coffee and spice character against a core of black cherry, lingonberry and licorice flavors. The finish lingers against firm yet unobtrusive tannins.”

Wine Enthusiast 92 points –Cellar Selection–
“The label does not bear the name Angela Vineyard, but the fruit is estate grown. This is a tight, focused, young red wine, with tangy raspberry fruit that touches on black cherry. Vivid and penetrating, it needs plenty of time to breathe, and as it does it reveals subtle layers of mocha and caramel. This has the bones to age. Drink now through 2030.”

“Brilliant red. Sexy, expansive aromas of fresh red berries, potpourri, spicecake and minerals, with a hint of blood orange adding vivacity. Then darker in profile on the palate, offering sweet black raspberry and rose pastille flavors and a touch of bitter chocolate. Dusty tannins give shape and grip to the long, incisive finish, which features a hint of cherry pit and echoing minerality. This very nicely balanced pinot shows the energy of a top ’11 and the flavor intensity that marks ’12.” JR
