It’s the finest rendition of this cuvée since 2017.”

Wine Spectator 98 points “As with other wines, I also tasted the 2018 Espectacle del Montsant next to the 2017 to catch up, as I last tasted the region some 16 months ago. 2018 was a cooler year of slow ripeness, and the grapes achieved an amazing 16% alcohol. The wine is truly spectacular, true to its name. It has tons of violet notes and aromatic herbs, the palate is gentler, and the tannins are rounder, polished and elegant. It has full body but isn’t heavy. There is a lot of complexity, and the wine developed slowly in the glass, showing nuances of cereals, kirsch, orange peel and lots of spices and herbs. It’s opulent and full, deep and complex. Amazing in its style. Some 6,500 bottles produced.”

Finishes supple and long, with repeating floral and spice notes and discreet tannins that provide shape and gentle grip.”

Wine Advocate 93 points “Once a Riserva and now moved up to the top appellation designation, the Castello di Meleto 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Poggiarso sees fruit selected from across a 1.6-hectare vineyard site. Made with 100% Sangiovese and aged in oak for 27 months, the wine offers some tertiary definition with spice and smoke at the back of purple fruits. The oak spice is integrated (50-hectoliter barrels are used), and the wine concludes with elegant minerality. Some 6,600 bottles were made.”

Wine Advocate 94 points “Here’s a new submission from the stunning Castello di Meleto, which has stone walls and towers in Gaiole in Chianti. The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Trebbio is a terrific discovery. Made with all Sangiovese from a single vineyard, this wine offers fruit brightness, balance and evident mineral definition. These results are linear and sharp, and the fruit is slightly more vibrant here compared to the Poggiarso. Only 3,300 bottles were produced.”

Vinous 95+ points “A heady mix of balsam herbs, citrus kissed blackberries, cocoa and sage can all be found as the 2019 Tempranillo Impulsivo En Chamberlin Vineyard opens in the glass. This is silky yet nearly juicy in feel, with vibrant acidity and spicy red berries that cascade across a core of saline-minerality. The 2019 finishes structured with a staining of primary fruit that resonates, creating a slightly chewy sensation as hints of licorice linger on. Lose this in the cellar, and reap the rewards. The Impulsivo from En Chamberlin is deftly refined in 50% new and neutral French demi-muids, foudre and barrels. That said, this is loaded with varietal character, and the oak is simply an accent.”

Vinous 95 points “The 2019 Camaspelo is dark and inward, taking a good amount of coaxing to unlock its bouquet of dusty florals, dried herbs, hints of cacao powder and mineral stone. This is velvety in texture yet medium bodied, with creamy depths of red and black fruit complemented by exotic spice and hints of Baker’s chocolate. Sweet herbal tones and licorice are left to linger, as a gentle pull of fine-grained tannins frames the style quite well. The Camaspelo veers toward opulence yet maintains a wonderful balance, and it should mature beautifully over the next decade or more. The Camaspelo is primarily Cabernets with a dollop of Merlot.”

Antonio Galloni 96 points “The 2013 Ghemme Collis Breclamae is fabulous. Deep, dark and also translucent, the 2013 possesses magnificent clarity as well as structure. Black cherry, lavender, truffle, mint, spice and new leather all develop in an ample, resonant Ghemme that hits all the right notes. A rich, substantial finish rounds things out in style. The 2013 can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring, but it also has the pedigree to develop in the cellar for many years to come. Each time I come back to the 2013 it is more impressive.”

It has a charming bouquet of blackberry, briar, brown spices and touches of sandalwood, complex and developing loamy elements with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Quite mineral-driven, leading into a composed, precise finish that indicates careful winemaking from great terroir. Superb. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting.”

Despite the challenges of the year, the Coudert family have produced a lovely classic, and it’s a wine that’s much more drinkable and vibrant than some of the recent banner vintages at this address.”
