Vieux Telegraph 2013
Vignobles Brunier Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Crau 2013 ($79.95) $69 special
Wine Spectator 92 points “Rather perfumy up front, with savory, mint and incense notes leading the way for silky cherry and raspberry coulis flavors. The finish is lined with subtle tobacco, warm stone and floral hints, ending with a light balsam twinge. This should put on some weight with age. Best from 2017 through 2026.” WS

Zorzal Eggo Tinto de Tiza
Purity of form & flavor: Argentine Excellence
Zorzal Eggo Tinto de Tiza, Tupungato, Argentina 2014 750ML ($39.95) $33 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2014 Eggo Tinto de Tiza is a blend from three different vineyards in Tupungato Winelands in Gualtallary. It’s a blend of mostly Malbec with some Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. As is the case with the whole Eggo range, the wine didn’t see any oak, and in this case it was matured in egg-shaped cement vats for one year. There are violets, plums, dark cherries and something earthy. This is slightly riper than the 2013. The medium-bodied palate has is fresh with a silky texture, pure flavors and a mineral-driven finish. At this price I’d buy it by the case. Super!”

Weingut Keller Westhofener Brunnenhauschen Abts Erde Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Rheinhessen 2013 750ML ($179.95) Was $149, Now $119; 5 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94-95 points “For the 2013 Westhofen Brunnenhauschen Riesling trocken Abts E (the spoken term Abtserde is officially not allowed) Keller harvested 40% less compared to 2012 but the 2013 is perhaps one of the greatest dry Rieslings he has produced so far. Lovely pure and fresh limes along with white-fleshed stone fruits (peaches, nectarines), wet chalk, white pepper and tobacco characterize the nose which is fresh, dense and fascinatingly precise. Obviously due to a higher tolerance for a certain amount of botrytis the palate is quite rich, creamy and juicy but less pure and naked than Wittmann’s corresponding Brunnenhäuschen. However, this is a dense, tightly woven and enormously complex dry Riesling whose taste is persistently dominated by lime and yellow-fleshed aromas as well as a lovely, stimulating piquancy. This is surely a galvanizing and elegant Riesling to keep for another 4 or 5 years at minimum and enjoy it for a decade.” WA

Weingut Keller Dalsheimer Hubacker Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Rheinhessen 2014 750ML ($99.95) Was $79, Now $69; 23 bottles available
John Gilman 94+ points “The 2014 Hubacker Grosses Gewächs is also brilliantly refined this year, as the inherent elegance of the vintage in the Hügelland has dovetailed beautifully with the style of this wine. This bottling can often be a touch more “broad-shouldered” out of the blocks than the other Grosses Gewächs in the Keller portfolio, but not this year, as it shares the same great elegance of the entire range. The outstanding bouquet really shows its yellow limestone signature, as it delivers scents of apple, tangerine, gentle notes of petrol, wild yeasts, orange peel, lovely smokiness and a gorgeously complex base of limestone minerality. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and complex, with a fine core, vibrant acids and excellent focus and grip on the long, zesty and utterly seamless finish. A glorious Hubacker to celebrate its 225th anniversary! 2022-2060.” JG
Jancis Robinson 18/20 points “Klaus Peter Keller does not produce ostentatious Grosse Gewächse and the Hubacker is possibly the most restrained, with its mountain stream-like freshness and cool stony minerality. What wine critics call minerality can take a number of expressions from salty to flinty, chalky to earthy, even wet pebbles sometimes serve as a valid association. The Hubacker does not make it that easy and at the end of the day it’s that combination of fresh and cool which proves its main attraction.”
Wine Advocate 91 points “The 2014 Dalsheim Hubacker Riesling trocken Grosses Gewachs shows a clear, more open and fruity bouquet with just a hint of chalk and lemon flavors, compared to the other Grosses Gewächs wines. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich, very clear, elegant and quite concentrated Riesling with power, phenols and complexity; but it is less stimulating at the moment compared to the Kirchspiel. The finish is very aromatic in its grapey character, pure and salty. However, the wine should be aged for at least another 3-4 years.” SR
Weingut Keller Westhofener Kirchspiel Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Rheinhessen 2014 750ML ($99.95) Was $79, Now $69; 29 bottles available
John Gilman 94+ points “The 2014 GG from the Kirchspiel is a great wine in the making, but I would want to allow this perfectly balanced and youthful wine to rest comfortably in the cellar for at least the next seven years before I start to drink it, as it has a ton to offer behind its suave, but serious structural elements. The stunning nose offers up a constellation of grapefruit, a touch of tart orange, wild yeasts, dried flowers, lime zest and a refined base of stony limestone minerality. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish and very pure and tightly-knit, with outstanding mid-palate depth, great cut and focus, impeccable balance and a very long, elegant and laser-like finish. At 12.5 percent alcohol, this is a touch lower in octane than many other recent top vintages, but this has just added to its refinement. A beautiful vintage of Kirchspiel. 2022-2060.” JG
Jancis Robinson 19/20 points “Tasted at Justerini & Brook’s tasting in London on 9 Sep. A little more restrained on the nose than I remember some previous vintages. Rather tough and dry on the end with massive extract. This is telling the taster to back off and wait. Solid rather than expressive. (I wonder whether it is still exhibiting the post-bottling symptoms that persuaded the Kellers not to show it at the annual VDP showing of GGs in Wiesbaden this year? They bottle their Grosse Gewächse months later, in mid August, than many other producers to prolong the period of lees contact. They report that the wines often show quite well one week after bottling but start to close down over subsequent weeks.)”
Wine Advocate 92 points “From vines planted in the mid 1960s, the 2014 Westhofen Kirchspiel Riesling trocken Grosses Gewachs offers a very clear, fresh and precise bouquet of white fruits, lemon juice and chalky flavors. Intense and piquant on the palate, with a lingering juiciness and fruit intensity of old vines, this is an impressive cru with a very good, tension-filled length and stimulating salinity.” SR
Weingut Keller ‘Von der Fels Riesling’ Trocken, Rheinhessen 2014 750ML ($39.95) Was $33, Now $29; 36+ bottles available
John Gilman 92+ points “Year in and year out, I am a huge fan of the von der Fels bottling and the 2014 vintage is another outstanding wine in the making. This is a touch fuller than the straight Riesling Trocken, coming in at twelve percent alcohol, and perhaps a bit more ageworthy as well. The excellent nose wafts from the glass in a mix of pink grapefruit, tangerine, petrol, a stunningly complex base of minerality, lemongrass and a topnote of orange peel. On the palate the wine is fullbodied, pure and very much defined by its complex soil tones, with a rock solid core, outstanding focus and grip and a very long, youthful and bouncy finish. This is still very early days for this outstanding wine, which is the same quality level of a lot of top estates Grosses Gewächs bottlings. 2019-2040.” JG
Wine Advocate 90 points “Keller’s 2014 Riesling Von Der Fels Trocken was born as a selection of younger vines, but these are more than 25 years old today. Sourced in the grands crus, this Riesling trocken shows a highly expressive shell limestone flavor with flinty/smoky aromas of crushed stones, and the typic lemon flavor of chalky soils along with white fruit flavors. Full-flavored, very delicate and finesse-full on the palate, this is an elegant, filigreed, lovely, pure and very frisky Riesling, with ripe fruit flavors and a stimulatingly salty finish. With just three grams of residual sugar, it’s the driest von der Fels so far.” WA

Weingut Keller Westhofener Brunnenhauschen Abts Erde Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Rheinhessen 2014 750ML ($149.95) Was $149, Now $128; 15 bottles available
John Gilman 97 points “The 2014 Abtserde is also brilliant utterly seamless on the palate. The magical and still quite youthful nose delivers a complex blend of apple, grapefruit, lemon zest, a very refined base of chalky minerality, a touch of wild yeasts and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and elegant, with great purity at the core, stunning transparency and brilliant length and grip on the focused and dancing finish. The acids here are ripe and the slightly lower octane found in the Keller GGs across the board in 2014 only seems to enhance the inherent elegance of this great young wine. 2025-2065+.” JG

Peter Lauer
Peter Lauer Ayler Kupp Auslese Fass 10 2014 750ML ($79.95) Was $69, Now $59; 6 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93+ points “The 2014 Riesling Auslese Ayler Kupp Fass 10 ‘VDP Grosse Lage’ is very clear but pretty reductive on the nose where ripe (tropical) fruits as well as crushed slate and smoky aromas are displayed. Sweet, round and lush, but also piquant and very elegant on the palate, this is a finesse-full though rich and gorgeous Auslese with a firm mineral structure and a mouth-watering grip in the compact and salty finish. Promising Riesling to be cellared for ten to 25 or more years.”
Mosel Fine Wines “This offers a great and superbly aromatic nose of orange blossom, tangerine and yellow peach, all wrapped into a blanket of papaya. Fine acidity, paired with a touch of CO2 at this early stage, make the wine shine. The mid-palate is juicy and mouth-coating with plenty of ripe and exotic fruits and yet the finish is focused and fresh. This is quite a superb Auslese in the making. 2022-2034″
This is the only listing in the USA today!
Peter Lauer Fass 8 Ayler Kupp Kabinett, Mosel 2014 750ML ($37.95) Was $33, Now $29; 36+ bottles available
John Gilman 91-92 points ‘The 2014 Ayler Kupp Kabinett from Florian Lauer is really a lovely and quite classic example of this Prädikat, with lovely acidity and minerality providing a fine filigree to the wine and a nice sense of reserve out of the blocks as well. The very classy nose wafts from the glass in a mix of green apple, tart orange, slate, lovely smokiness and a touch of dried flowers in the upper register. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, pure and focused, with a good core, bright acids, a nice touch of sweetness on the attack and lovely length and grip on the elegant and nascently complex finish. This is quite approachable now, but still a touch primary, and I would be inclined to give it at least a few years in the cellar to develop its secondary layers of complexity. 2019-2035+.” JG

Peter Lauer Ayler Kupp Fass 7 Riesling Spatlese, Mosel 2014 750ML ($59.95) Was $49, Now $39; 20 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt – Wine Advocate 93-94 points “Precise on the nose and excitingly precise the 2014 Kupp Spätlese Fass 7 is pure and slate-like on the nose and offers a very delicate and coolish Riesling aroma. Medium to full-bodied, lush and intense on the palate this elegant textbook Spätlese does not lose its mineral precision and finesse because it was only made by overripe but not botrytisized berries. This is a great Saar Spätlese and a must buy of the vintage.”
Peter Lauer ‘Barrel X’ Saar Riesling, Mosel 2014 750ML ($24.95) Was $21.90, Now $18; 17 bottles available
Stephan Reinhardt – Wine Advocate 94 points “Made not exclusively from their own vineyards the 9% alcohol (plus 20 or 22 grams residual sugar) 2014 Alt Scheidt Riesling (or Barrel X in the US) is an untamed flavored Saar Riesling with a lovely slate aroma and a very sappy and piquant taste. It is lovely juicy and sweet, but also very elegant, and a nothing but lovely type of Kabinett, although Floran Lauer does not want to name it like this because predicates are used only for sweet wines.”
John Gilman, View From The Cellar: “The 2014 Barrel Alt Scheidt” Riesling Feinherb had also just been bottled, and naturally, as it is one of the less expensive wines in the lineup, it is under the screw. The wine offers up a pretty nose of white cherries, pears, slate, white flowers and lime zest. On the palate the wine is medium-full, bright and generous on the attack, with good acids, a fair bit of sweetness and nice length on the wide open and nicely laid back finish. Perhaps this will show a bit more backend precision when it has time to bounce back from its bottling. Good juice. 2015-2020”
Peter Lauer Riesling Kupp Grosses Gewachs 2012 750ML ($79.95) Was $69, Now $59; 3 bottles available
Peter Lauer Riesling Schonfels GG 2012 750ML ($79.95) Was $69, Now $59; 2 bottles available
Importer note: This is one of the great dry wines of Germany from a profound site that hugs a small triangle of land, directly on top of a cliff whose sheer rock face drops precipitously into the Saar River itself. The vineyard is full of centenarians, un-grafted old timers who pull from the slate some serious complexity. This is a rare bottle and worthy of respect. This parcel has been in the family for many, many years yet Florian’s grandfather stopped working it and his father never cultivated it. The first vintage was 2006, only one year after Florian’s first vintage, and it has become one of the more important wines in the collection. The Schonfels can be harvested very late; ripeness, as the 100 Oechsle measure suggests, is not difficult to achieve and because the site is so windy rot is very uncommon.

Wonkie Willi Sale
Willi Schaefer
Weingut Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Auslese, Mosel #14 2013 750ML ($109.95) Was $99, Now $89; 4 bottles available
Wine Advocate 95 points “Compared to the Domprobst Auslese #11 the 7% alcohol 2013 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Auslese #14 displays a more concentrated bouquet highlighted by a flinty slate perfume. Sweet, rich and elegant on the palate this lush and juicy Auslese is structured by its refined acidity and lingering salinity, whereas the long aftertaste displays ripe fruit aromas again and still remains piquant and stimulating. However, the wine still has baby fat and thus is not that perfectly shaped or balanced as is the Auslese #11 at the moment. It just asks for some years of bottle age to polish its edges and achieve more transparency.”RP
Terry Theise notes: “Candied ginger. Rather into BA-territory now. The first of these to taste discretely “sweet.” Already balanced, albeit turbulent, but this is glaringly brassy and brilliant. The customary Schaefer serenity is elsewhere. Impressive finish here, and fathomless miles to go.”
Weingut Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Beerenauslese #11, Mosel 2011 375ML ($209.95) Was $169, Now $149; 5 half-bottles available
Wine Advocate 97 points “The Schaefer 2011 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Beerenauslese restores the brightness, vivacity, penetrating and interplay of flavors that characterized the two magnificent Domprobst Spatlesen in the present collection but had receded as one made one’s way through the Spatlesen. Never has Willi Schaefer’s repeated mantra that green-golden ripe berries must be well-represented in a B.A. been more deliciously illustrated. Juicy and candied lemon, apple jelly and fresh apple concentrate, quince paste, white raisin, vanilla cream, and salted caramel all inform a rich yet exuberant palate performance that enervates even as it envelops. This should have half a century of adventure in store.” WA

Weingut Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese #9, Mosel 2012 375ML ($59.95) Was $44, Now $39; 13 half-bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 points “Delicate and concentrated on the nose, the 2012 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese #09 displays pink and yellow grapefruit aromas along with honey flavors from the botrytis. On the palate this delicious wine is pure and very piquant and seems less sweet than it really is. The finish is thrilling, full of tension, salt and grip. An impressive though very delicate Riesling Auslese. “RP
Stephen Tanzer 91 points “($51) Pale golden yellow. Enticing aromas of raspberry, mint and sassafras mingle with a faint hint of spicy botrytis. Ripe and full yet discreet, this auslese is both dense and light on the palate. Finishes complex and long.” ST

Weingut Willi Schaefer Graacher Riesling Feinherb, Mosel 2014 750ML ($24.95) Was $19, Now $16.60; 34 bottles available
John Gilman 89+ points “As I have written in the past, I really enjoy Feinherb bottlings from top producers and wish more of these types of wines found their way to the US market. The 2014 from Weingut Schaefer is very stylish and classy, with about eleven percent alcohol and around eighteen grams per liter of residual sugar striking a lovely balance. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a pretty blend of white cherries, apples, slate, a touch of apple blossoms, orange zest and a bit of petrol in the upper register. On the palate the wine is medium-full, bright and bouncy, with a good core, zesty acids and lovely focus and grip on the complex and vibrant finish. 2015-2025+.” JG
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 88 points “Bottled with less than 20 grams per liter of unfermented sugar, the 2014 Graacher Riesling Feinherb (Estate Riesling in the U.S.) displays delicate fruit of yellow-skinned apples intertwined with piquant slate and Mediterranean herbal aromas. The slate shines through even more on the lovely, round and fruity palate, where the mineral salinity and piquant acidity gives this wine a lovely purity and a stunning grip and structure. I find this 11% alcohol Riesling more balanced and harmonious, and not less expressive than the dry Graacher.”

Weingut Willi Schaefer Graacher Riesling Trocken, Mosel 2014 750ML ($24.95) Was $19, Now $16.60; 36 bottles available
John Gilman 88+ points “The “basic” Trocken Riesling from Christophe Schaefer is really a pretty wine that year, with a lovely interplay of minerality, pure fruit and excellent acidity. The very bright and stylish nose offers up scents of lime, green apple, slate, bee pollen and petrol. On the palate the wine is medium-full, long and nicely focused, with a very good core, excellent balance and a long, crisp and zesty finish that closes with impressive grip and bounce. Good juice. 2015-2025+” JG
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 87 points “Picked with 75° to 78° Oechsle and slightly chaptalized to 11.5% alcohol, the 2014 Graacher Riesling Trocken has a clear, fresh and coolish stone aroma intermixed with green and yellow apple, as well as citrus aromas. Quite intense and juicy on the straight and well structured palate, this is a medium to full-bodied, dry and fruity Riesling with a stunning fruit intensity and power. This QbA demonstrates very well that you don’t need high must weights to earn intense and structured Riesling when it is grown in a top site.”
Terry Theise notes “Even commentators friendly to this domain have observed that the dry wines are below the quality level of the sweet wines. I agree—which is why I was so surprised how much I liked this. Still leesy but it seems quite wonderful; mineral, angular, stony but with a curious slinky malic aspect that ameliorates a certain severity; very long and dense with only a teeny nip of botrytis.”
Weingut Willi Schaefer Estate Riesling, Mosel 2014 750ML ($24.95) Was $19, Now $16.60; 30 bottles available
John Gilman 90 points “The Estate Riesling from Weingut Schaefer in 2014 finished off nicely at between thirtyfive and forty percent residual sugar, to balance out nine grams per liter of acidity and is really a beautiful bottle of wine. The bouquet offers up a complex and youthful bouquet of pear, apple, a touch of orange zest, a fine base of slate, petrol and a nice esthery topnote of bee pollen. On the palate the wine is medium-full, pure and bright, with a fine core, vibrant acids and superb filigree and focus on the long and classy finish. I really love the balance of this wine in 2014 and this will be one of the great sleepers to be found in the vintage. 2015-2030+.” JG
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 87+ points “Schaefer’s 9% alcohol 2014 Graacher Riesling displays a charming fruit of yellow-skinned apples on crushed and slightly smoky stones. Bottled with roughly 35 grams of residual sugar, this is a round and elegant, lovely and light, but intense and juicy Schaefer classic. It has a rich fruit intensity, grip and a lovely salinity in the quite persistent finish. Keep this wine, if you want, and it will become even finer with the years.”

Round and fleshy on the palate, offering intense blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that become livelier and sweeter with air. The very long, energetic, sharply focused finish features fine-grained tannins and subtle, lingering notes of dark berries and smoked meat.”
Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Laurence 2011 750ML ($119.95) $89 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 95 points “A solidly grippy, old-school version, with lots of brick dust, roasted chestnut and fresh tobacco leaf notes coating the core of steeped plum, raspberry and black cherry fruit. Offers a broad and woodsy feel through the finish, with singed cedar and juniper details pumping throughout, delivering ample flesh and fruit for balance. This has grip to burn and should cruise in the cellar. Best from 2018 through 2030.”

Late Breaking News!
New Releases – Araujo Estate
ETA April 29th
Araujo Estate Altagracia Red, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($149.95) $125 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 95 points “Glorious aromas, like walking into a flower shop, from roses to lilacs. Lots of dark fruit too. Then goes to slate and dark mushroom. Full body, super refined tannins and refresh and ultra-clean finish. A thoroughly balanced and refined wine. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 10% cabernet franc, 6% petit verdot, and 4% malbec. So delicious to drink now.”
Robert Parker 93 points “As for the 2013 Proprietary Red Altagracia, the blend is slightly different, at 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot and 4% Malbec. One of the finest Altagracias I’ve tasted to date, the color is saturated ruby/purple, much darker than the 2012 and the wine slightly less fragrant and more coiled tight. Yet, it is also more concentrated and promising. The wine is a heck of a second wine, but does require some patience. For now, deep, rich blackcurrant and blackberry fruit with floral notes (white flowers?), medium to full body and sweet tannin are all present in this relatively larger-scaled Altagracia than we’ve seen in the past (14.8% alcohol). The finish is long, still youthful and certainly approachable, but this wine will be better with 2-4 years bottle age and should keep for at least two decades.”
Araujo Estate Eisele Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley 2014 750ML ($99.95) $89 pre-arrival special
Winemaker’s notes: While winter rainfall in Napa Valley was half the normal amount, heavy rains in March deeply soaked the Eisele Vineyard soils immediately before emergence of the first shoots, stimulating humification and healthy vine growth. Warm weather without frosts led to one of the earliest bud breaks on record. Bloom was two weeks earlier than in 2013, and fast, homogenous flowering ensured good fruit set. Mild July weather allowed slow ripening of the grapes, which progressed rapidly during August heat to early, complete maturity. Harvest started August 18th and the last parcel of Sauvignon Blanc was picked on August 28th. The fruit was fresh and very aromatic, with bright acidity. The grapes are certified ‘Organic’ by California Certified Organic Farmers and ‘Biodynamic’ by Demeter. The wines were aged on their lees for 12 months, in a combination of stainless steel (30%), concrete eggs (25%), used oak (30%) and new oak (15%)
Tasting note: Nose is shy at first with a whiff of flint stone, then it opens up to a perfume of bright white musk giving place to grapefruit and passion fruit notes, with a twist of basil leaf. The mouthfeel is round, savory with flavors of candied citrus and coriander accompanied by a hint of vanilla lingering in a crisp and mineral finish.
