Vietti: Landmark Piedmont Producer 3-21-24

On Sale Now!

Vietti is one of the benchmark producers in Barolo—a name that belongs alongside Conterno, Mascarello, and Gaja in the short-list for the greatest in the region. Their style can be described as neo-classical. The wines aren’t ultra-traditional, but they do combine what the former owners and winemakers, Luca Currado and Elena Penna, value most about traditional wines of the Piedmont with modern cellar practices. (A note about Currado and Penna: they sold the estate in 2016, but stayed on until 2023 to assist with the transition. All of our wines on offer were made by them, except for the Moscato.) The result is a set of wines that show tons of Nebbiolo character and distinct terroir signatures, but with a certain elegance that’s all Vietti.

The Barolos are the “Grand Cru” of the region and the crowning jewels of the estate. They represent the best sites under the Vietti’s spade. Organically farmed across the board, these wines offer a fantastic snapshot of the diversity of terroir in Barolo with a distinctive house style. Highly collectible and crafted in limited amounts, these promise decades of enjoyment after they shed their baby fat.

Vietti Derthona Timorasso Colli Tortonesi 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $38, that’s $36.10 at 5% off and $34.20 at 10% off, 24 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 94 points
“A beautiful timorasso with salted caramel, sliced mango, pear and apple aromas and flavors. Medium to full body. Bright and vivid acidity at the end. A lovely combination of ripe fruit and wild, crisp acidity. Vegan. About 30% aged in ceramic. Drink now.”
Jeb Dunnuck 92 points “A pale straw color, the 2021 Derthona Timorasso is set to be released in May of 2023. It has a savory richness to its aromatics of pine resin, fresh lime flower, and melon and is tangy on the palate, with medium body, saline, the stony texture of wet asphalt, Meyer lemon, and chamomile. It feels very much like a Chenin Blanc, but a fresh style in a warm vintage. It is long on the palate with mineral persistence.”

Vietti ‘Vigna Scarrone’ Barbera d’Alba 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $51.90, that’s $49.31 at 5% off and $46.71 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The 2021 Barbera d’Alba Vigna Scarrone is dense, plush and explosive. A rush of dark red cherry/plum fruit, mocha, licorice, spice, rose petal and a kick of French oak all build in the glass. Potent and quite deep, the Scarrone is another lights-out Barbera from Vietti. In recent years, the Scarrone has come along very well. Then again, these vines were planted in 1989, so they are no longer ‘young’, just younger than the Vigna Vecchia, where the oldest vines date to 1918.”

Vietti Tre Vigne Barbera d’Alba 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $26, that’s $24.70 at 5% off and $23.40 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points
“The 2021 Barbera d’Alba Tre Vigne is a fabulous, explosive wine. Sumptuous dark cherry, ripe plum, mocha, licorice and new leather are all dialed up to the maximum. This racy, deep Barbera is tremendous. For its quality-to-price ratio, the Alba Tre Vigne might be the wine of the year at Vietti.”
James Suckling 92 points “Notes of ripe plums and blackberries with dark spicy chocolate, moist bark and wet asphalt. Juicy and racy on the palate with medium to full body and vivid acidity. Tense with dusty tannins and a seamless, lengthy finish.”

Vietti Tre Vigne Dolcetto d’Alba 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $21.90, that’s $20.81 at 5% off and $19.71 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Decanter 91 points
“Floral aromas, with crisp notes of sweet spice. On the palate, giving plums and dark berries, with intensity and freshness. Firm tannins. There is something honest and straightforward about this wine. Lovely. (Drink between 2024-2038)”
Winery Notes “Purplish-red colour with subtle violet hues. Blackberry and raspberry aromas. Notes of minerals and blueberry. Medium-bodied, with soft tannins, moderate acidity and good balance.”

Vietti ‘Perbacco’ Langhe Nebbiolo 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $28, that’s $26.60 at 5% off and $25.20 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 90 points
“The 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is an especially nervy edition of the Perbacco, the result of a significant presence of Monforte fruit in the blend. Notes of red fruit, orange peel and white pepper sculpt the 2021, finishing with notable tension. (Drink between 2023-2029)”
Winery Notes “Fruity with hints of mint, spices and raspberry. Round, elegant tannins add to a long, refined finish. Robust, intense, powerful in youth; complex, elegant with ageing.”

Vietti Cascinetta, Moscato d’Asti DOCG 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $19, that’s $18.05 at 5% off and $17.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery Notes
“Bright straw-yellow color with slightly shimmering hints of gold. Intense aromas of ripe yellow fruit (peach, apricot), floral notes (rose petal) and hints of ginger. Sweet and delicate on the palate, with modest acidity, and good balance and complexity. Hints of fresh apricot on the finish. Drink as an aperitif, perfect accompaniment to Pan-Asian cuisine and lobster as well as pastry, fruit based and creamy desserts and blue cheeses.”

Barbaresco & Barolos:

Vietti Barolo Riserva DOCG 2015 750ml Displayed Price: $149, that’s $141.55 at 5% off and $134.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 96 points
“A rich, round profile carries maturing aromas and flavors of cherry, plum, rose and sweet spices, with grace notes of wild herbs and autumn woods. This is impeccably balanced, with refined, resonant tannins and a lingering aftertaste that echoes ripe fruit and vanilla, adding a mineral element. Complex and approachable now with decanting. Best from 2025 through 2042.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 points ” Here’s an exciting new submission from Vietti that takes us to a whole other level (and evolutionary timeframe). A very late release that is held back at the winery, the 2015 Barolo Riserva sources its fruit solely from Castiglione Falletto. In fact, it represents a special section of the best sites that go into the Barolo Castiglione. Some of that fruit was so impressive, I am told, the decision was made to age it longer (with up to 30 months in large oak casks) and give it a Riserva designation. Specifically, the grapes come primarily from Scarrone and Bric del Fiasc. Production is 5,000 bottles. The wine reveals gorgeous elegance, with evolved fruit flavors and melting tannins. The beauty is that you can drink this wine the same day you buy it.”

Vietti Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $169, that’s $160.55 at 5% off and $152.10 at 10% off, 1 bottle in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 96 points
“Sourced from an average of 54-year-old vines in Brunate of La Morra, the 2017 Barolo Brunate was aged for 32 months in large oak cask and barriques. It offers brooding aromas of licorice, dried currant, and cedar. Congruent on the palate with mineral-rich turned earth, there is a firmly built structure with balance. Drink 2024-2050.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points “The 2017 Barolo Brunate is a powerful, brooding wine. Huge dark fruit, leather, spice, menthol and dried herbs all build in a potent Barolo that is enshrouded by tannins. The 2017 is going to need quite a bit of time in the cellar. Today, it is very much a brooding powerhouse. Dark wild cherry, licorice, tar, menthol and spice take shape in the glass, but the 2017 is clearly an infant, and an unruly one at that.”

Vietti Lazzarito, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $169, that’s $160.55 at 5% off and $152.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points
“From the southwest facing amphitheater of Lazzarito in Serralunga d’Alba the 2017 Barolo Lazzarito was aged for 30 months in a combination of large oak casks and barrique. The nose is layered with elegant spice and floral notes of cedar, red plum, and brushed leather. There is incredible balance within its structure, which has deceptive ease for early drinking. Hold 3-5 years or drink 2023-2046.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points “Vietti’s 2017 Barolo Lazzarito is absolutely gorgeous. Whatever the challenges of the growing season, they appear to have been no problem here. More than anything else, the Lazzarito impresses with its magnificent depth and stature. Super-ripe red fruit, white pepper, mint, tobacco, cured meat, spice and rose petal open gradually with time in the glass. I would not be in a rush to open bottles anytime soon. The Lazzarito has been one of the most improved wines at Vietti for a number of years. The 2017 is so captivating.”

Vietti Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $169, that’s $160.55 at 5% off and $152.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 98 points
“Located in Novello, from three hectares of the Ravera MGA with southwest exposure, the 2017 Barolo Ravera was aged for 32 months in large oak casks. It is forward and expressive with fresh pine, candied cranberry, orange oil, and aniseed. The palate is full of energetic tension, balance, and purity, with apricot pit, tea leaf and saline minerality. An inspiring wine to close out the Vietti 2017 lineup. Drink 2025-2050.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “The 2017 Barolo Ravera is a powerhouse. My impression is that the 2017 is going to develop into something truly special. It has all the energy that makes this site so distinctive, but with an extra kick of fruit density and a whole range of exotic aromatics that make for a truly drop dead gorgeous wine. Bright red/purplish fruit, rose petal, chalk and white pepper build into a finish laced with searing intensity. This is such and impressive wine.”

“I was not at all surprised to see such a tremendous showing from Vietti because I had already tasted the 2018s from cask two years ago, pre-pandemic. The 2018 Barolos are absolutely beautiful. There is not much more to say than that…” — Antonio Galloni, February 2022

Vietti Barbaresco Roncaglie Masseria, Barbaresco DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points
“The 2018 Barbaresco Masseria Roncaglie is a captivating, layered wine full of character. Effusive aromatics make a strong opening impression. Rose petal, lavender, sage, blood orange and red berry fruit all run through this vibrant, focused Barbaresco. The 2018 is charming and nuanced from start to finish. This is the first vintage from a parcel that previously belonged to Socré. It’s an impressive debut, to say the least. All this nervy Barbaresco needs is time.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points “This wine shows its MGA name ‘Roncaglie’ on the front label for the first time. That’s because Vietti recently acquired additional land in this cru site. The total holdings now span two hectares of vines. The 2018 Barbaresco Roncaglie Masseria is made as if it were a Barolo (instead of a Barbaresco) and is released one year after its peers. It shows tart fruit and dried cranberry with some mild spice and tarry smoke from two years in large oak casks. Exactly 5,026 bottles were made.”

Vietti Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“With fruit from La Morra, the mid-weight 2018 Barolo Brunate shows a pretty softness and a delicate side with dried rose, lilac and blue flower. The wine completes malolactic fermentation in barrique and is later moved into large oak casks for aging. This dual oak treatment is part of Vietti’s secret recipe for producing the silky tannins and fine texture you taste here. A production of 4,493 bottles, the wine is recognized by that distinctive aromatic finale of licorice and balsam herb.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points “The 2018 Barolo Brunate is a deep, layered wine that is going to need at least a few years to come together. Today, the Brunate is quite primary and backward, but all the ingredients are there. Sage, menthol, licorice, dried flowers and spice build with a bit of coaxing.”

Vietti Cerequio, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points
“The 2018 Barolo Cerequio is a new wine in this range. Soaring aromatics and bright, red-toned fruit give the Cerequio its effusive personality. Nuanced and deep, with tremendous complexity and tons of character, the Cerequio is dazzling. This is everything a great Barolo from Cerequio should be. In other words: textbook. More over, it’s one of the best wines of this very uneven vintage.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 points “Here’s an exciting new submission from Vietti. The 2018 Barolo Cerequio is lovely, sporting a broad and enriched bouquet that paints a panoramic vision of this MGA that straddles the villages of La Morra and Barolo. Despite that wide vision, this wine also excels at showing pinpoint details of wild cherry, crushed stone and black licorice. Cerequio is a wine of latitude and depth. Tight tannins help to stitch it together into a comprehensive whole. Only 4,925 bottles were made in this inaugural release. Congratulations.”

Vietti Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95+ points
“The 2018 Barolo Ravera is a wine of real depth and vertical structure. As always, the Ravera is a taut, nervy Barolo built on energy more than volume. Readers will have to be patient, as the Ravera is likely to require a number of years to be at its most expressive. Even in the early going, it is vibrant and full of life. Rose petal, chalk, blood orange and white pepper lend striking exotic top notes that are quite suggestive of what the future is going to bring. What a gorgeous Barolo this is.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points “Vietti is one of a handful of estates to bring the Ravera MGA of Novello to the current popularity it enjoys now. Their 2018 Barolo Ravera has a smoky personality with crushed stone and pencil shavings. There is plenty of dark fruit at the back, ripe cherry and blackberry mostly, and the wine is tonic and firm in terms of its structure and tannins. The Ravera is a wine of enormous length and a finely tuned texture. Exactly 7,560 bottles were made.”

Vietti Rocche di Castiglione, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $219, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97+ points
“This is one of my sweetheart wines from Castiglione Falletto. The Vietti 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is beautifully etched and sharp with an especially delineated quality that is uncommon in this vintage. Fruit comes from a small 8,000-square-meter parcel, and like the other wines in this cru series from Vietti, it ages in oak casks for two years. The wine’s texture is beautifully smooth and polished thanks to the carefully integrated tannins. Only 3,693 bottles were made.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “The 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is suave, silky and caressing right out of the gate. Sumptuous and racy, with silky tannins, the Rocche possesses superb depth and plenty of resonance that builds over time. The 2018 is an especially potent Rocche that is going to need a number of years to unwind.”

“Vietti’s 2019s are off the charts… From the first wine to the last, the 2019s possess tremendous depth and purity, along with the deep inflections of site that are what Barolo is all about. Readers who can find these wines should not hesitate, as they are truly magnificent.” — Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Vietti Castiglione, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $58.50, that’s $55.58 at 5% off and $52.65 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The 2019 Barolo Castiglione is elegant, translucent and classy. Crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, mint and cinnamon all grace this elegant, wonderfully nuanced Barolo from Vietti. I especially admire the energy here. In many vintages, the Castiglione is easygoing and quite accessible, but I see the 2019 Castiglione Falletto needing a few more years to come into its own. I especially admire its focus and cut.”

Vietti Cerequio, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off and $224.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98 points
“The 2019 Barolo Cerequio is a worthy follow up to the stellar 2018. Aromatic and deeply pitched, the 2019 races across the palate with remarkable depth and intensity. Crushed rted berry fruit, rose petal, mint, and cinnamon all open in the glass, but it is the wine’s silkiness and suppleness that impresses most. A kick of acids and tannins puts an exclamation point on the finish. This is a gorgeous Cerequio that takes all the finesse this site offers, and then turns up the volume. What a wine.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97+ points “Vietti was able to buy a 9,000-square meter piece of Cerequio from Michele Chiarlo, arguably the king of this celebrated cru. And because this is a new addition to the portfolio, the Vietti team is still learning the ropes. For example, there is a fresh minty tone that pops up from the bouquet of the 2019 Barolo Cerequio. “That minty note was a mystery to us,” Luca Currado tells me. “But then we understood that its part of Cerequio.” This wine shows a firm grip on the palate that does extend out to include some textural softness, but it ultimately remains quite structured. Among the grand cru sites of La Morra, Luca Currado tells me that “Cerequio is the brother and Brunate is the sister.” His wife Elena Penna adds, “We’ve never had two sites so close to one another show such a great difference between them.”

Vietti Lazzarito, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $239, that’s $227.05 at 5% off and $215.10 at 10% off, 24 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 98 points
“With fruit from Serralunga d’Alba, the Vietti 2019 Barolo Lazzarito is a historic cornerstone wine of this mighty portfolio. It is also one of the Vietti Barolos that consistently delivers extreme quality and pleasure with each new release. Like the other wines presented here, winemaking is straightforward, with submerged cap fermentations lasting 30 to 35 days (although those times were reduced in 2019 because this vintage was not suited to long maceration times). Serralunga d’Alba always delivers power and richness. There are aromas of dried tobacco leaf, perfumed tea, crushed rose and iron ore. The bouquet is extremely expressive.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points “The 2019 Barolo Lazzarito continues a trend seen in recent years in which the focus has been more about finesse than raw power. Intense red fruit, iron, dried herbs, chalk, dried rose petal and white pepper all run through this deep, virile Barolo. The power and intensity of Serralunga really come alive on the heady, explosive finish. Bright saline notes linger on the deep, resonant finish. A Barolo of raw, unbridled power, the Lazzarito demands patience.”

Vietti Rocche di Castiglione, Barolo DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $299, that’s $284.05 at 5% off and $269.10 at 10% off, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 99 points
“The 2019 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is all class. Deep and sensual, the 2019 once again shows how magical this site is. A Barolo with no hard edges and tons of sensuality, the 2019 is positively stellar. Silky tannins wrap around a core of bright red-toned fruit. The purity of the flavors is remarkable. Sweet floral and spice notes lend tons of lift as the Rocche gains in dimension with time in the glass. Resonant, expansive and sensual to the core, the Rocche will thrill Vietti fans.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 99 points “For lovers of timeless Nebbiolo, the Vietti 2019 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione hits all its marks. Yes, Vietti makes beautiful Barolo from some of the best cru sites from across the appellation, but I confess a preference for this outstanding wine. Rocche di Castiglione has the home team advantage with vines located not too far from the winery that is nestled into the outer stone wall and urban fabric of the Castiglione Falletto village. This site is characterized by freshness, extreme precision (that always stands out), linearity, structure and balanced freshness. This naturally concentrated vintage also shows a juicy or succulent quality that is outstanding. Pretty mineral notes add to the balance and elegance. The vineyard site measures about one hectare. Rocche di Castiglione is an oddly shaped and elongated MGA with singular southeast exposures along a steep ravine, with Bussia to the west and Perno to the east.”
