Ürzig & Ürziger Würzgarten:

There is no other vineyard in the Mosel that results in wines so intensely spicy, earthy and so richly tropical than Ürziger Würzgarten, in the village of Ürzig. The lightness and elegance of the fruit is impossible to replicate. Even wines from its storied neighbor, Erdener Treppchen, are a wholly different animal. Ürziger Würzgarten is famous for the high percentage of iron in the soil in addition to its blue and gray slate, contributing a spicy characteristic that proves its name (Ürziger Würzgarten translates to “the spice garden of Ürzig”). Molitor’s wines in particular rank among the best examples from the vineyard. His holdings include those of the former Jos. Christoffel Jr., whose estate dates to the 12^th century.

Despite their sheer deliciousness of these wines in their youth, do try to be patient: the return on investment could not be greater. The citrus and honeyed white fruit, the pure mineral backbone, and the fountain of youth-like freshness that accompanies these bottles is without compare. Fortunately, for you, these wines are ridiculously undervalued and will provide decades of delight to come for such a small tariff.

Everything seems to be in a young style for this wine that is pure, structured and dry, with a lovely mix of tannins, crystalline slate acidity and lingering salinity. This is not really fragile like, say, a Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr; instead, it’s filigreed and has strong bones. Fine tannins structure the fresh and lemony yet rich finish. A serious terroir wine with just 10.5% alcohol. Tasted in May 2021.”
