Magnificant Mascarello Monprivato

“Monprivato is distinguished by its intensely floral aromatics, fine, chalky tannins, red-toned fruit, saline minerality and ability to age…The personality of this hillside site comes through consistently, making Monprivato one of the greatest sites in Italy, and the world.”Antonio Galloni

The release of Giuseppe Mascarello’s Monprivato is always one of the highlights of the vintage in Barolo—a monument to the glory of Nebbiolo.  It always amazes us that for around the price of an average premier cru Burgundy, you can have one of the greatest wines in Barolo (and from one of the best vintages) but there you have it.  We don’t get much and it arrives Friday.

Arriving Friday:

Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio Monprivato, Barolo DOCG 2013 750ML ($179.95) $149 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 96 points “A perfumed style, boasting floral, cherry, kirsch and licorice flavors. Slightly chewy, yet elegant overall, with fine balance and a lingering finish of macerated cherry, earth and tobacco notes. Shows fine length and intensity, leaving an essence of mineral. Best from 2021 through 2043.”

New to the February Clearance Sale!

Best of the Betz now Vinopolchopped.

Betz Family Winery La Cote Rousse Syrah, Red Mountain 2015 750ML ($79.95) Was $69, Now $59, 36+ bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2015 Syrah la Cote Rousse is a blockbuster Syrah from Red Mountain that’s from the Ranch at the End of The Road and Ciel du Cheval vineyards. It’s a mix of four different clones and is brought up in barrel. This deep, inky, seriously black Syrah gives up Hermitage-like notes of scorched earth, charred meats, graphite and licorice. It’s a big, concentrated effort that’s going to benefit from short-term cellaring and keep through 2035.”

Speaking of the February Clearance Sale, don’t forget these other west coast gems with prices slashed, as well:

Ramey Platt Vineyard Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast 2014 750ML ($69.95) Was $59, Now $49 special
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2014 Chardonnay Platt Vineyard has expressive pink grapefruit, warm peaches and brioche notes with hints of praline and ginger. Medium-bodied with great richness and depth in the mouth, it has a lovely creamy texture offset by a wicked backbone of freshness, finishing long with mineral and savory/yeasty layers.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
Ramey Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay, Russian River Valley 2014 750ML ($69.95) Was $59, Now $49 special
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2014 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard is the most exuberant and layered of David Ramey’s Chardonnays. It is also stylistically the wine that is closest in style to past. Rich, sumptuous and layered, the Ritchie expresses intensity in all of its dimensions. Even with all of its richness, the 2014 confers aromatic intensity and freshness. This, too, is very nicely done.”
Wine Advocate 95 points “Youthfully mute at this primary stage, the 2014 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard offers suggestions of lemon curd, white peaches and white grapefruit with underlying notes of honeyed toast and butterscotch. The palate is full-on seduction with an appealingly oily texture and tons of peaches and cream flavors, finishing long with a lively lift.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
Ramey Woolsey Road Vineyard Chardonnay, Russian River Valley 2014 750ML ($69.95) Was $59, Now $49 special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2014 Chardonnay Woolsey Road Vineyard is a powerful, intense wine with real phenolic intensity. This is an especially rich, deep and layered wine with exquisite finesse and pedigree. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2014 for at least a few years. This is a special Chardonnay in the making.”
Wine Advocate 93 points ‘The 2014 Chardonnay Woolsey Road Vineyard has exotic jasmine, pineapple and guava notes with hints of crème brulee and croissant. Medium-bodied with plenty of finesse in the mouth, it gives a nice balance between the fruit and savory flavors, with a silken texture and finishing long and toasty.”

Winery Cellared Library Releases

From Castell’in Villa

When Principessa Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessa and her husband bought their 13th century farmhouse and estate in Tuscany in the late 60’s their intention was not to become one of the leading producers of traditionally-made Chianti Classico.  Rather, the goal was simple—find a place to settle down and raise a family, and the vineyards were part of the mixed agriculture that was traditional in Tuscany at the time.

Over time, though, more and more of the property became planted to vineyards (the estate currently has about 40 producing hectares out of ~300 on the property) until in 1985, tragedy struck.  A large freeze decimated the olive trees on the property (oil production is an important source of income) and her husband died later in the year.  She seriously considered selling the estate and moving elsewhere but instead doubled down, committing to make the best wines in the region.

Stylistically, these are some of the most old-school and age-worthy wines coming out of Chianti today—wines that make you sit up and realize why the name at one point was synonymous with Italian wine.  The Chianti and Riserva are both 100% Sangiovese, aged in large casks for three years before bottling and have that slightly faded glory quality that makes the wines special.  Bright fruit, present tannin and a floral, slightly dried cherry quality are all here, with more earth and spice emerging with age.

The Principessa prides herself on how long the wines age for and the winery keeps (and releases) significant library wines.  They’re significant both in age and also in importance—it’s very hard to find older Chianti in the secondary market (most collectors who buy Castell’in Villa are loathe to sell it).  These are reference point wines, capable of lasting decades, and being utterly profound experiences.  We have some of the older stuff arriving February 16th and few things currently in stock, as well.

New & Winery-Cellared Releases Arriving February 16th

Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico DOCG, Tuscany 2013 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 pre-arrival special

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!
The average price nationally is $24
Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 1993 750ML ($249.95) $219 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “[Reviewed Jun 2012] The 1993 Chianti Classico Riserva is another stunning wine. It boasts gorgeous depth and purity, not to mention fabulous overall balance. Sweet dark cherries, licorice, mint and spices are woven together in this fleshy, supple Riserva. The firm tannins are there, but the 1993 has more than enough fruit to stand up to the wine’s structural components. Today the 1993 comes across as slightly smaller scaled version of the 1990. This is a fabulous wine with at least another decade of fine drinking ahead of it.”

Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 1994 750ML ($249.95) $219 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “[Reviewed Jun 2012] The 1994 Chianti Classico Riserva is more immediate and juicy than the 1993. There is plenty of underlying structure, but it is buried by the wine’s generous fruit. Sweet dark cherries, plums, tobacco and incense meld together on the exotic, spiced finish. This is a relatively fleshy wine for Castell’in Villa. I have a slight preference for the 1993, but the truth is that all five wines from the 1990s are fabulous. I would be thrilled to own any of them.”

Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 1995 750ML ($279.95) $249 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 95 points “[Reviewed Jun 2012] The 1995 Chianti Classico Riserva is another marvelously complete wine. Waves of fruit saturate the palate in this intense, full-bodied Riserva. The 1995 is another wine endowed with massive fruit and equally imposing structure. It is the first wine in this tasting that is still not ready to offer maximum pleasure. Today it comes across as a young version of the 1990. This is another tremendous showing.”

Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 2001 750ML ($149.95) $119 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “[Reviewed Jun 2012] The 2001 Chianti Classico Riserva is a big, layered wine bursting with energy. It possesses striking aromatic nuance and delineation from the very first taste. Today the fruit is quite vibrant and the tannins, while present, are not completely unapproachable.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!
Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 2005 750ML ($99.95) $79 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 93+ points “[Reviewed Jun 2012] The 2005 Chianti Classico Riserva is an impressive wine for the vintage. It boasts a serious core of fruit backed up by considerable structure. The sheer purity and delineation is fabulous. I won’t at all be surprised if the 2005 blossoms into an even better wine than this note suggests. There is no shortage of potential. Ideally the 2005 should be cellared for at least a few years.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!
Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 2008 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Ian D’Agata–Vinous 92+ points “Good bright red. Nose began closed and brooding, but showed vibrant notes of redcurrant, mint and dried flowers with aeration, complicated by a strong mineral quality. Sweet and nicely lush in the mouth, with suave flavors of redcurrant, herbs and tobacco joined on the back end by a very strong element of gunflint. The long finish features a firm acid spine and youthfully chewy but noble tannins.” ID

Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 2009 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 92 points “Rich, enveloping and beautifully layered, the 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva is a rare Riserva that will drink nicely with minimal cellaring. Sweet tobacco, licorice, leather, cedar and underbrush meld together as this radiant, supple Riserva opens up in the glass. More classic elements of structure emerge on the finish.” AG

Castell’in Villa Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 2010 750ML ($79.95) $69 pre-arrival special

Castell’in Villa ‘Poggio delle Rose’, Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 1996 750ML ($159.95) $128 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “[Reviewed Jun 2012] The 1996 Chianti Classico Riserva Poggio delle Rose emerges from the glass with generous fruit, which is given additional volume and richness from the French oak. The 1996 is a big, big wine, especially within the context of the vintage. Because 1996 is the debut vintage, the percentage of new barrels is higher than in subsequent years, and the wine remains marked by the oak. Smoke, licorice and tar wrap around a muscular finish supported by firm, insistent tannins.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!
Castell’in Villa ‘Poggio delle Rose’, Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2006 750ML ($149.95) $119 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 95 points “[Reviewed Jun 2012] The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva Poggio delle Rose brings together all of the best elements of this site and house style. Firm tannins frame a core of deeply expressive, opulent fruit in this full-throttle, huge Chianti Classico. Threads of sweet perfumed fruit run through the 2006 as it shows off its class and personality. Mint, flowers and sweet red berries punctuate the explosive finish. This is a dazzling showing from Castell’in Villa.”
This is the only listing in the USA today!
Castell’in Villa Santacroce Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2004 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 93 points “[Reviewed Jun 2012] The 2004 Santacroce is silky, layered and impeccably balanced. Sweet red roses, red berries and spices are all woven together beautifully in this refined, expressive wine. This is a lovely showing. The 2004 captures the essence of the 2004 vintage in a relatively soft, supple style built for near and mid-term enjoyment.”

“Castell’in Villa’s 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva Poggio delle Rose captures the generosity of the vintage while retaining a gorgeous sense of freshness and energy. “The 2013 Coteaux du Languedoc Prestige (which was already in bottle at the time of this tasting) is a blend of 55% Grenache and 45% Syrah aged all in concrete tank. Fresh, elegant and thrillingly pure, with first rate aromas of blackberry, fresh plum, licorice and ground herbs, it is decidedly sexy and forward, yet stays perfectly balanced, with juicy acidity and fine tannin on the finish. Easily one of the top estates in the Languedoc (if not southern France), Chateau Puech Haut lies just outside the village of Saint-Drezery and is owned and run by Gerard Bru, with consulting help from Philippe Cambie. They produce a number of cuvees, with their entry level efforts representing superb values, and their top cuvees being able to stand toe to toe with the greatest wines in the world.”

Arriving Friday:

Chateau Puech-Haut Pic Saint-Loup La Closerie du Pic, Languedoc-Roussillon 2014 750ML ($31.95) $26 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 92-94 points “Still not yet bottled (I tasted it from barrel last year as well), the 2014 Languedoc Pic Saint Loup Closerie du Pic is a blend of mostly Syrah and Mourvèdre, with a splash of Grenache. It got a big “wow” in my notes and has fabulous, fresh, lively notes of dark fruits, crushed rocks and spring flowers. There’s notable oak on the nose, but it’s beautifully integrated and lends a polish and richness to its texture. Full-bodied, with ripe tannin and a great finish, this is a sensational Pic Saint Loup that will drink well right out of the gate, yet evolve for 7-8 years or more.”

Old School Barolo / New Reviews

New Reviews from the Wine Spectator

“Cavallotto may very well be the greatest Barolo producer few people have ever heard of, something that continues to mystify me. Truth is, it isn’t just the Barolos here that are impressive, the entry-level wines are every bit as delicious and well-priced…Readers who appreciate a firm, classic style of Barolo will want to spend some time getting to know Cavallotto.”Antonio Galloni

Coulée de Serrant:

White of Kings and King of White Wines

Both Louis XI and XIV recognized the sublimity of La Coulée de Serrant, as did the monks who first planted the vineyard almost a millennium ago. The wines from this 17-acre plot display an individuality that long ago warranted a 17-acre appellation controlée, like Burgundy in the Loire. Put this property, and the other Savennières vineyards Les Vieux Clos and Clos de la Bergerie, into the care of the Joly family and you have fabulous wine like no other.

Nicolas Joly is considered the high priest of biodynamic winegrowing and winemaking in France, and he has managed his estate according to this uber-organic system since 1984. His are happy, healthy vines. Tasting a Clos de la Coulée de Serrant wine remains a privilege: history combines with progressive farming in a most beautiful expression of the Chenin Blanc grape, just as nature and mankind intended.  The wines are rich and powerful but not too much so—the apotheosis of dry Chenin Blanc.  Drink them now with a decant or age them for a few decades, it’s your choice.

Nicolas Joly Vignobles de la Coulee de Serrant ‘Clos de la Coulee de Serrant’ Savennieres, Loire 2014 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, 19 bottles available
Wine Advocate 95+ points
“The yellow-golden 2014 Clos de la Coulée de Serrant, a world famous and iconic Chenin with its own appellation (Savennières – Coulée de Serrant AC), opens with a beautifully clear, precise and aromatic bouquet of ripe and dried, lovely concentrated stone and grapefruit, as well as some honey aromas intermixed with crushed crystalline stones and herbal flavors. Highly elegant, clear and vital on the palate, this full-bodied wine is immensely intense but also silky, transparent and finesse-full. The long and stimulating finish is enormously piquant and salty, very compact but in perfect balance. There are dried Mediterranean herbs like thyme along with concentrated apricot and quince flavors in the persistent aftertaste. A great, elegant and very refined Coulée.”

Nicolas Joly Vignobles de la Coulee de Serrant Savennieres La Roche aux Moines ‘Clos de la Bergerie’, Loire 2014 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 6 bottles available
Wine & Spirits 93 points
“Perhaps the least challenging of Joly’s three cuvees from his biodynamic estate, this grows on schist soils with an eastern exposure. It’s also the most synesthetic, presenting its tastes in a sunrise of color, from golden quince to red-hued tannins. It’s pure and honeyed without any sense of sweetness or any notes of oxidation. Bursting with freshness, this is powerful, grand Savennieres.”
Wine Advocate 92+ points “Intensely yellow in color, the 2014 Roche-aux-Moines Clos de la Bergerie has a deep and concentrated bouquet of ripe and stewed stone fruits along with herbal seeds. This wine needs a lot of time to open up and should be decanted for hours. Round, rich and elegant on the palate, with a racy acidity attack, great density and a lively mineral purity and backbone, this is a powerful, firmly structured Chenin; it has a good tannin grip and a long and intense finish. Still somewhat closed and bitter, but the concentration and rich fruit is obvious. Although I didn’t have the chance to follow this bottle over days, I am pretty sure it will become an even more exciting wine with (much) more aeration.”

Clos St. Jean

From Pre- to Post-Modern

When Clos St. Jean began bottling estate wines, in 1910, the wine world was a very different place.  Since then, though, the estate has been quick to embrace all the potential that modern enology has to offer and is now one of the foremost producers of modern-styled Chateauneuf du Pape.

In 1910, there was no Chateauneuf du Pape appellation, which was established thirteen years later.  Technology was also very different—stainless steel hadn’t been pioneered for fermentation vessels, there was no temperature control in wineries and viticulture was relatively simplistic.  Wines were lighter, rustic and coarse—a far cry from the powerful, silky beauties of today.

The current wines from Clos St. Jean are amongst the most impressive in the region.  The winery’s holdings are mostly in La Crau (the famed, galet-strewn part of Chateauneuf) and the richness that terroir provides comes through in the finished wines.  The St. Jean wines are powerful, with intense ripe fruit, rich aromatics and lovely textures.  The wines age magnificently but are generally delicious on release, as well.

It’s a huge, unctuous effort that packs an incredible amount of blackcurrants, garrigue, pepper and dried flowers into its balanced, elegant, layered personality. It picks up a charcuterie meatiness with time in the glass, as well as the telltale melted licorice characteristic of perfectly ripe Grenache. Count me as a fan and this heavenly juice shouldn’t be missed by any Rhône lover.”

It literally made my heart rate increase. From 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre brought up all in demi-muid, it’s going to be over the top for some, yet is an incredible wine that could come from nowhere else. Bravo!”

Jeb Dunnuck 97-100 points “Vincent told me that they harvested very late for the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Sanctus Sanctorum, yet there’s absolutely no sense of overripeness or heaviness, and this beauty has everything you could want. Offering a profound nose of blackberries, blueberries, graphite, lead pencil, scorched earth and even a hint of spring flowers, it hits the palate with incredible density and richness that carries an absurd amount of fruit, ripe tannin and a finish that won’t quit. Give this undeniable blockbuster 3-4 years and enjoy over the following 20.”

The Incredible 2015 Feudi San Gregorio Rubrato

Arrives in September

Aglianico may be the world’s most undervalued grape, but it’s still surprising to see a score like the one that James Suckling gave Feudi San Gregorio’s Rubrato.  Big, powerful and bold, it’s a wine worth paying attention to.  We just got our hands on a parcel arriving this coming fall and wanted to offer it to you now, while quantity is still available.

Arriving ETA September:

Feudi di San Gregorio ‘Rubrato’ Aglianico Irpinia, Campania 2015 750ML ($21.95) $17.75 pre-arrival special

James Suckling 95 points
“This shows such a beautiful density and texture with licorice and blackberry character. Full and layered yet always tight and focused. A fantastic young red. Drink or hold.”
