Let’s get straight to the point—Champagne this good should cost way more than this does (also this wine often costs more than it does now). This Vouette et Sorbee Cuvee Fidele NV is 100% Pinot Noir and very serious. Not all blanc de noirs are this vinous and that elegance and complexity shines through when paired with food. Serve it in a real wineglass, not flutes, to experience it in full. –Saul

There’s a joke that “all the best California Pinot is Syrah.” The idea being that if you want ‘California Pinot’ that’s heavy, rich and bold, you’re better of buying a Syrah from the same producer. DuMOL is known for both grapes and we love their Russian River Valley Syrah. Dark, plummy and rich, it’s got all of the silky texture and powerful aromatics you would want, but it’s ten bucks cheaper. –Saul

Have a glass of Bodega Tapiz Zolo Reserve alongside a steak, gaucho style, or polish off a bottle with a burger and a movie. Cabernet like this deserves a space in every kitchen. – Daniel

Wine of the Day: Matello Fool’s Journey Syrah 11-09-16

Today, while enjoying the fact that I live in Oregon, this wine caught my eye. Matello’s “Fool’s Journey” Syrah comes from the Willamette Valley, so it offers a lighter-toned wine which I find more reasonable than the average over-cooked Syrah. Dark fruit and spice give to a refreshing finish, thanks to a reasonable, not-hot-headed 12.8% alcohol content. From non-irrigated vines planted in 1994, the 90/10 blend of Syrah/Viognier honors its Old World roots. Oregon wines like this express pure common sense. – Daniel… Read the rest

Wine of the Day: Chateau Haut Brion 1989 11-1-16

A wine of firsts. Haut Brion was Bordeaux’s original grand vin: the first Bordeaux to be grown, branded, and marketed as a single-estate, château wine; the first to receive written mention as such, in Samuel Pepys’ famous 1663 diary; and the first on the 1855 classification list. Even oenophile/diplomat Thomas Jefferson visited Haut Brion in 1787, to sample and purchase one of his favorite wines. Quality has always remained the passion at this 111-acre estate in Pessac. Arnaud de Pontac, Haut Brion’s 17th-century savior, and president of Bordeaux’s parliament, could afford low yields, new oak, and elimination of moldy grapes and inferior wines. The rest of the Médoc gradually followed suit, creating the classed growths we know today, with wine estates around the world eventually embracing the same pursuit of absolute quality.… Read the rest
