Gaja’s Astounding Wines

At Awe Inspiring Pricing

Gaja is a name that requires no context in discussion—like Latour or DRC, it’s understood which estate is meant and that the wines are epic, change-your-dinner-plans events.  Angelo Gaja is one of the primary reasons we care about Barbaresco today and the wines bearing his name remain the most treasured and collectible of the region.  Furthermore, the top wines from his Brunello estate, Ca’ Marcanda, have quickly become among top two or three most sought after wines in Tuscany.

The one complaint we might have with Gaja, as with most wines that are full-on collectible, is the pricing.  … Read the rest

The Marvelous Cheval des Andes

At the Best Price in the Country

Cheval Blanc is a hallowed name in the world of wine—one of those bucket list estates that wine dreams are made of.  Their Argentine project, Cheval des Andes, has the same ambition, but working with a very different (higher altitude) terroir.  The wine is made by Nicolas Audebert, a former winemaker at Krug and Veuve Cliquot, and seems to exude both the exoticism of the best wines made from Argentina with more than a touch of Bordelaise class and structure.  … Read the rest

Wine Advocate 93 points “A perfumed, elegant, beautifully complex red (I can’t say it really screams Barbera though…Pinot Noir or Grenache would be my guess in a blind tasting), the 2012 Barbera Jack’s Vineyard started out slightly reduced and closed, but man did it open up beautifully with time in the glass, and it really didn’t start firing on all cylinders until the second day.… Read the rest

New Scores For Always Delicious Chardonnays

Marcus Goodfellow’s Matello and Goodfellow Family Cellars labels have been mainstays at the shop for some time now—wines that we carry regardless of vintage, scores or overall hype.  The wines are amongst the best in Oregon and consistently some of the most inspiring wines we taste.  It looks like we aren’t alone in our love—the new Wine Advocate reviews for our fair state lavish (deserved) praise on Marcus’ wines, particularly two Chardonnays which we wanted to feature today.… Read the rest
