(Including New Reviews from Antonio Galloni!)

The emergence of “New California” has been one of the most exciting developments in the wine world this century.  The name refers to a growing number of Golden State producers making more balanced, structured wines from a state where bigger has too often been used as shorthand for better.  The results have been thrilling, especially for people who generally prefer European wines.

Cellar-Worthy Brunellos From a Legendary Vintage

2012 was one of this century’s finest years for Tuscan reds, a truly collectable vintage for the region’s best wines. Perhaps no Tuscan wine is more collectable than Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. The Perfect 2016 Eisele Cabernet

Previously Sold Out, More Stock Now Available

Eisele is one of the most hallowed terroirs in the Napa Valley.  Tucked into the foothills in Calistoga, it has produced incredible wines since 1971 for Phelps, Araujo and now (indirectly) Chateau Latour, who bought the property a few years ago.  Their flagship bottling is made to compete with first growth Bordeaux and very much does—this is collectible and profoundly complex and ageworthy.

James Suckling’s Wine of the Decade

2017 Almaviva

James Suckling recently published his “wine of the decade”—the single bottling that impressed him most over the course of the last ten years.  His choice? The profoundly powerful 2017 Almaviva Puente Alto—a perfect wine made under the auspices of Mouton Rothschild and Concha y Toro.

The winery has been one of the best in the world over the course of the decade, earning two perfect scores, and Suckling notes that “”For the last 10 years, vintage after vintage, Almaviva vineyard has been quietly, consistently establishing a track record as one of the greatest wine producers in Chile, if not all of the world.”
