Paolo Scavino

Barolo’s Modern-ish Master

Scavino is one of the truly great estates in Barolo, a region with no shortage of famous names.  Despite a recent trend towards a more traditional approach, the wines still skew modernist.  Rich and powerful in their youth, their true greatness only reveals itself after time in the cellar -something that can’t be said about all of Scavino’s modernist peers.  Complex and nuanced upon release, the wines are built to age.

With access to some of Barolo’s most prized vineyards, and a winemaking team that embraces the best of both modern and traditional techniques, the wines are arguably the smartest buys in Barolo today.

Opus One Subscriber Special

Little introduction is needed for Opus One—one of the world’s most recognizable, iconic bottlings.  We’ve just locked up our allocation of the impressive 2017, which arrive in late September. Although the wine is getting harder and harder to source (there’s a lot of demand outside of the US now), we’re offering you some pretty impressive pricing on it—with the catch that it’s so good that we can’t list it online.

Towering Barolo Ravera from Elvio Cogno

If you’ve heard about the Ravera cru in Barolo (see Vajra), you have Elvio Cogno to thank.  Born and raised in Novello, the village associated with the famous vineyard, he left his partnership with Marcarini in his sixties to start his namesake winery in 1990.  He purchased Cascina Nuova, an underperforming but historic estate, and started making wines under his own name from the Ravera cru.

The resulting wines have been stupendous ever since, prompting a rush on land in Novello (and Ravera in particular), but no wineries have surpassed the original master and his son-in-law (winemaker since ’96 Valter Fissore—who is arguably even more talented than Elvio).

“A vintage that will live in Burgundy folklore”

We don’t have to say too much about Dujac.  They’re undisputedly one of the top handful of producers of Burgundy and their collection of vineyards is impressive by any measure.  The wines are incredible—built to last and complex as the day is long.

The 2018 vintage represents a distinct triumph for Dujac—one that their winemaker described as “a vintage that will live in Burgundy folklore.”
