Spotlight on the Nahe

Three Great Producers, Scores of Great Wines

The Nahe sits between the Mosel and the Rhine and occupies a middle-ground stylistically, as well. With bright acidities common in the Mosel plus the power and grandeur of the best wines of the Rhine, there’s a completeness to these wines that’s impossible to resist. We’re highlighting three top growers below, but you can check out our full collection of German Riesling on our webstore.

Dönnhoff

Donnhoff is perhaps our favorite German producer.

Lucien le Moine’s Exceptional White Burgundy

Arriving Friday

Lucien Le Moine is one of the hottest names in Burgundy. The rise has been meteoric due to the scarcity of the wines and also the fact that they work almost exclusively with grand and premier cru vineyards. To understand why Le Moine’s wines are so exceptional, the first thing to understand is that the house doesn’t make, or set out to make, anything close to average.

Guímaro: The Rebel of Galicia

Pedro Rodríguez is probably the foremost producer of Mencía in the world. His estate, Guímaro (meaning “rebel” in Galician), in Ribeira Sacra produces wines that exemplify why wine geeks love the region. From steep slate vineyards, the wines are reminiscent of Burgundy in their balance, but with a distinct minerality and flavor profile that’s entirely Galician.

Ribeira Sacra, Rodríguez’ home, is a cool climate region through and through. The closest analogue to the vineyards might be the Mosel, in Germany, as both have extremely steep slate vineyards that make you wonder who would think it would be reasonable to farm them.

Petrolo’s 2014 Torrione

Petrolo is one of the leading proponents of the Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC, a small area in Tuscany that only recently received the DOC designation. Frankly, the designation should have happened a while ago—these are distinctive wines made from unique soils and the quality across the board is very high. Petrolo’s wines provide a wonderful introduction to this undervalued corner of Tuscany due to both their quality, but also thanks to their forward-thinking. Today we’re offering a wine that exemplifies this progressive orientation, Petrolo’s Sangiovese-dominant Super Tuscan Torrione, at Subscriber Special pricing.

Roagna’s Much Anticipated 2015s

Roagna has joined the very upper echelon of Piedmont producers over the past decade and a half. These resolutely traditional wines hail from some of the best parcels in Paje and Pira (a Roagna monopole), plus recently acquired vineyards including Albasani. Perennial staff favorites, the entire lineup is absolutely brilliant. The problem for us staffers is that each year less and less of our allocation remains available after our pre-arrival offer.
