It’s remarkable that even as Brovia’s star is rising in the echelons of Barolo, prices have yet to seriously escalate for these wines. They stand with any producer’s collection of Baroli and yet are priced below many ‘name’ producers that are making wines of less character and interest.  For traditionally made Barolo, these are some of the best wines you can buy (at any price, really, but especially for the price).

Heidsieck’s Blanc de Millenaires

Charles Heidsieck might be the most picky great house in Champagne.  Their top wine, the Blanc de Millenaires, has been released only five times in the last forty years.  Even the most selective of the other great names declare 4-5 vintages a decade (and then there’s Dom Perignon, which skipped only ’01 and ’07 so far in the aughts), but Heidsieck will only release this wine under the most perfect of circumstances (the last vintage released was the epic 1995).

A New Vintage of Rioja Alta 904

We’ve been selling the wines of La Rioja Alta like hotcakes the past few weeks—especially the 2010 vintage of their top of the line “904” Grand Reserva.  These are excellent wines top to bottom, but there’s something about the 904 that seems to capture the imagination and palate.  As a result, we’ve just brought in the outstanding 2009 vintage in—an earlier drinking companion (at a lower price) to the structured 2010.

Antonio Galloni recently published his report on the 2016 vintage in Chianti, confirming the greatness we’ve been tasting in these wines!  He said “I can’t remember the last time I was this excited about Chianti Classico and its wines”—ecstatic praise from someone who’s been covering Italian wines for as long as he has.  He declared that “[t]he top 2016s have turned out to be just as extraordinary as I had hoped.”
