Clos de la Roche, Clos St. Denis, Clos de Tart, Clos des Lambrays—this quartet represents the heralded set of Grand Crus in Morey-St. Denis. The main difference between the first three and the Clos des Lambray? Price. All of the other major Grand Crus in Morey are easily $250-$500 per bottle for new releases and, if you’ve got the money, well worth it. Lambrays, on the other hand, is every bit the wine of the more heralded names, especially over the last decade or so, and costs less than half of its neighbors (2014 Clos de Tart is spectacular, but $438, for reference).
Brunello is one of the two kings of Italian wine, but we’ve put some plebian pricing on these treats from our January clearance sale. Whether it’s the approachable Frescobaldi, the regal Pian dell’Orino or the classically proportioned La Torre, these three represent something for any Italio-phile palate. Caprili has become one of the most notable names when talking about Brunello producers whose star is on the rise. Founded relatively recently for a Tuscan estate, in 1965, the small family producer has continued to turn out some of the most exciting, traditionally styled wines from the Brunello appellation, though only recently has their name become a buzzword in industry circles.
Domaine la Solitude has become known for making some of the best white Chateauneuf around. Taking the natural richness the wines are known for, Solitude manages to polish them with a little more finesse than many others in the region and this effort, arriving Friday, is a classic. 2016 looks to be yet another fantastic southern Rhone vintage, with the whites as some of the shining stars. This fantastic bottling looks to be the perfect way to start getting into the wines and deserves a place on your table and in your cellar.
