2018 Terry Theise Austrian Wines

2018 looks the a fascinating and exciting vintage for most major Austrian growing regions.  In contrast to Germany, there’s a lot of variability, but the highs are very, very high indeed.  It’s a vintage of distinct savoriness and even wines which normally show plenty of fruit have a bit more seriousness than usual.  We’re highlighting the wines of Gobelsburg, Ott and Alzinger today—three producers that absolutely killed it in ’18.  These are some impressive collections of wine in three different styles.

Xavier Vignon might be the most acclaimed winemaker who still flies under the radar. He’s primarily a consultant in the mold of Phillipe Cambie, traveling from winery to winery to provide expert winemaking, blending guidance and that extra bit of flair.

He’s been incredibly successful, responsible for some of the most lauded wines in France (think the 100 point Grand Veneur VV, Usseglio’s 99 point Impériale, etc).  He makes wines that are rich, powerful and impressive, no matter where he goes.

Christophe Baron, legendary winemaker of Cayuse, recently released a Champagne to his mailing list (he hails from Champagne, it’s not as random as you’d think).  Despite the sky high price, the wine sold out in less than three hours.  We’re not here to offer you that wine today, but to humbly suggest that there might be another option, hiding in plain sight on our shelves, that could scratch the same itch (for a little less coin)—Benoit Dehu’s “Rue des Noyers”.

Noble and Overlooked

The Excellent Max Ferd. Richter

The wine that first got me [Saul] into German wine was an old bottle of Max Ferd. Richter.  It was an ’81 Kabinett, recorked and relabeled at the estate, and re-released at 20+ years old.  It was a revelation—my first taste of older German Riesling and a fantastic wine despite the less-than-stellar vintage.  When we got the offer for Richter that you see today, my eyes lit up—these are some fantastic wines that don’t make it across the US as widely as they should.
