Pian dell’Orino’s Brilliant Brunello; Clouet for the Holidays; German Riesling End of Bin Sales; Rinaldi’s Incredible 2013 Barolo Crus; Karthauserhof’s Lean Mean Riesling

The Next Legendary Brunello Producer

Pian dell’Orino’s Monumental 2011

Soldera. Biondi Santi. The two giants of Brunello. Pretty soon it looks like we might be able to add Pian dell’Orino to that list. Brunello insiders have known about the wines for several years now, but the secret seems to be getting out. We don’t get a lot of these wines, but we have enough to offer them today and we’re really excited to share them with you.

Piano dell’Orino combines two things that make great wine estates: good land and obsessive ownership. Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrik Erbach, the owners and driving force behind these wines, have a take-no-prisoners approach to ensure that they make the finest wines in Brunello.

Coutier

In the world of Champagne, the wines from R.H. Coutier offer a remarkable combination of affordability and seriousness, as well as some of the coolest looking labels in the region (which, of course, we don’t care about, because we drink what’s inside the bottle…but still).Coutier makes wines solely from estate holdings in the village of Ambonnay. Rated Grand Cru, Ambonnay is located in the Grande Montagne de Reims and is regarded as one of the best places to grow Pinot Noir in Champagne.  As a result, wines from the village, including those of Coutier, tend to have a lot of power and richness.

2014 Rostaing Ampodium

A Excellent Deal Gets Better

2014 is an excellent year to buy Rene Rostaing’s Ampodium Cote Rotie, and not just because we’ve dropped the price on it to make it an even better deal.

No, 2014 was a very good year in Cote Rotie, qualitatively, but yields were way down—60% off of normal in the case of Rostaing.  As a result, he made only one Cote Rotie, declassifying the Landonne and Cote Brune into the Ampodium bottling (which used to be known as “Classique” if you’ve been following the wines for a while).

Wine Spectator 93 points “Sleek, with a smoky underpinning and a lively, detailed bead, this firm version offers flavors of black currant, toast, lemon curd and honey. Lingering finish. Drink now through 2030.”
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “Just beginning to mature, this balanced, ripe wine is complex, with bright acidity, toast and pear and green-plum fruits. It is rich, with a tight mouse that shows intensity as well as a stylish character.
