An Icon of New ZealandTrinity Hill Homage

hile most in the Northern Hemisphere think of New Zealand for Pinot Noir, perhaps the best wines to come out of the tiny nation are Syrahs from the Gimblett Gravels region of Hawkes Bay.  Deep, powerful and rich, they nonetheless possess stunning cool-climate aromatics that give them a combination of grace and power that’s truly special.  They’re special wines that are exceedingly rare outside of their home country—domestic demand is intense and most of the time the best stuff gets consumed there.

Trinity Hill is the top winery in Hawkes bay and their top Syrah, called Homage, is one of New Zealand’s landmark wines.

September Sale Highlight

Santa Ema Merlot

Santa Ema produces some of the best values in South American wine.  One of the venerable Chilean wineries, they seem to be capable of producing wines that are absolute gems at a variety of different prices.  Case in point: this just arrived Riserva Merlot that’s just gone in the September Clearance Sale.  Bold, rich and silky, it’s a reminder that Merlot was incredibly popular for good reason—this wine gives a lot of $25 Napa and Washington state examples a run for their money, at a price under $10/bottle by the case.

Big, Powerful, Opulent and Undervalued

The 2015 Cristia Chateauneufs

Looking for big, rich, opulent Chateauneuf du Pape?  Look no further than Domaine Cristia, especially in 2015.  The estate is known for powerful wines made from ancient vines in a style that renders them drinkable young but capable of aging for a long time, as well.  We’re head over heels for the 2015’s, and so is the Wine Spectator, who bestowed some impressive reviews on the two wines that we have in stock now.

Beaux Freres The Upper Terrace Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2016 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 96 points “The Upper Terrace Vineyard was planted in 2000. Pale to medium ruby-purple in color, the 2016 Pinot Noir The Upper Terrace has a classic nose of warm red cherries and cranberries, sliced blueberries and strawberry jam with notes of cola, cardamom, oolong tea leaves and blue flowers—the nose gives up changing earth, fruit and savory layers every time I go back for another smell.
