New Wine Spectator Washington Report

“After a series of scorchingly hot growing seasons, Washington received a welcome break from the heat in 2016. The cooler temperatures are reflected in the year’s red wines, which as a group show more finesse and dimension than versions from 2015 and 2014 without losing any of Washington’s trademark vibrant fruit character.

“Though the state’s signature reds—Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot—performed well in 2016, Rhône reds such as Syrah, Grenache and various blends thereof account for most of the top wines in this report.”

Coastal, northwestern Spain is one of the most exciting wine regions in the world.  After decades operating in obscurity, the wine world is starting to discover the maritime climate, amazing terroirs and unique grapes of Galicia.  As the world has noticed, money and technical ability have flowed in, creating the perfect environment for stunning, cool climate wines.  These are wines that can challenge the finest of Chablis for complexity, personality and age-worthiness at prices that, while expensive for Spanish white wine, are bargains for the quality of the bottles in question.

Big Rhone Reds for Grilling

While many people like to go all-American for their fourth of July celebrations, we’re after the best wines and biggest values to pair with wines coming off of the grill. To that end, there’s no better choice than the Rhone valley, whose rich, robust reds seem born to pair with hearty, smoky foods.  Whether you’re looking at $15 Cotes du Rhones or $75 Chateauneuf du Pape, the wines deliver a top of value relative to other regions in their price categories, as well—always a good thing.
