Actually From the Willamette Valley

Uncommon pedigree for an unheard of price…
Resonance Resonance Vineyard Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton District 2014 750ML ($69.95) $37 special
Wine Enthusiast 94 points “This exceptional vineyard, more than 35-years-old, brings a wealth of subtle details to a wine that has both grace and power. There’s truffle, earth, mocha, plum, spice, coffee and on and on it goes, all well integrated already. Experience would suggest that wines from this vineyard, previously made for Sineann, are exceptionally ageworthy. Drink now if you must, or cellar and drink from 2022 to 2030.”

Own-rooted, dry farmed & hands-off approach yields heavenly Pinot
Bow & Arrow Hughes Hollow Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2015 750ML ($41.95) $33 special
Grapelive 94 points “The rather exotic Hughes Hollow Vineyard Pinot Noir from Bow & Arrow is amazing stuff. It at first is tight and iron-laced in a way that reminds me of young Nebbiolo. A few swirls brings an exciting array of classic Pinot aromas and flavors out and, with further coaxing in the glass, a powerful sensation that you are tasting something otherworldly. Scott Frank, winemaker at Bow & Arrow, has done some thrilling wines from this unique north facing 30 year old site, and this 2015 is impressive. Hughes Hollow Vineyard (located in the South Salem hills on Jory and Nekia soils at about 675 feet [and] now farmed all organic) was a place Frank wanted Gamay from, but had to take Pinot grapes as part of the deal. Mercy be, what deal it has turned out to be…! This vineyard, fast becoming a favorite of mine in Bow & Arrow’s lineup, has its own personality. The vines here are own-rooted and have been dry farmed from the beginning which adds to the intensity of form and with a vintage like 2015, [where] ripe flavors, a savory bite and crisp acidity dominate. It bursts from the glass marked with the volcanic mineral and spice along with dried roses, tangy strawberries and minty herbs (stems?) before gathering its forces for a medium bodied, but powerful palate of black cherry, plum and briar laced raspberry along with cinnamon, black tea, earthy leather/porcini and lavender incense. This is a gripping Pinot, with a firm structure with young Vougeot-like tannins. The length is heavenly and long adding the vintage’s sweetness that offsets the rustic nature of this unpolished wine, this really sexy stuff. Drink over the next 3 to 7 years.”

“an exceptional value in her lineup”
Kelley Fox Wines ‘Ahurani’ Pinot Noir, McMinnville 2016 750ML ($27.95)
$24 special
Grapelive 94 points
“One of Oregon’s talented new generation of winemakers Kelley Fox has released her latest Ahurani Pinot Noir from the biodynamic vines at Momtazi Vineyard in the McMinnville AVA. It’s a beauty. In 2016 (as in 2015) Fox used 100% whole cluster, and it’s produced from blocks on the top of the tallest hill of the vineyard. This block selection cuvee is remarkably fresh and vivid in a vintage that some found warm and even over-ripe in places… At 13% it’s as refined and bright as you’d want [and] wonderfully balanced. Fox, after long stints at Eyrie and Scott Paul wines, started her own winery with the 2007 vintage and has gained a stellar reputation ever since. [She] is one of the region’s rising stars with absolutely star quality wines with this offering of Ahurani being an exceptional value in her lineup… The ripe and warm year really allows the use of whole bunch and stems here and it shows that the total harmony found here in this gorgeously detailed Pinot. Fox’s wonderful touch and judgement are also on full display too, as there is the perfect amount of tension and stemmy thrill to go with the graceful and silky fruit. This is a wine that grabs your attention and seduces you with purity of flavor, texture, subtle perfume and dreamy length. The palate is surprisingly complex and mouth filling considering the restrained natural alcohol. This Ahurani retains an energy and acidity profile that is fresh and vibrant that provides an excellent stage to show the vivid layers of black cherry, pomegranate, wild plum and strawberry fruits, liquid mineral, a touch of earth, sweet/minty Thai basil/herbs, peppery cinnamon and a heady mix of floral elements and woodsy chanterelles. Air and time in the glass allows this youthful Pinot Noir to gain an even more intriguing and engaging charm. Its color seems to become even more translucent and glowing with a bright ruby and garnet core. [There’s] a touch of rose petal, a cut of orange tea, and a nice play of spice and sexy blue fruits on the aftertaste. This 2016 is easy to love even now, but I can really imagine things developing further over the next 2 or 3 years in bottle. I am absolutely blown away with this latest set of Kelley Fox wines. This not a label to miss, especially her Pinot Blanc and this Ahurani Pinot Noir!”

“Truly exceptional” Oregon Grand Cru
St. Innocent Temperance Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2015 750ML ($39.95)
$29 special
James Suckling 95 points
“A vibrant and incredibly spicy expression of pinot noir with a wealth of freshly picked blackcurrants, redcurrants, sour red cherries, orange rind and citrus. The palate doesn’t hold back though and is dense and well-rounded yet retains the same freshness as the nose with driven acidity. Just how this wine manages to combine such concentration and vivacity is a mystery. Truly exceptional. So delicious now but better from 2020 and beyond.”
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 94 points “(aged in French oak barrels, 21% of them new) Deep lurid red. An expansive, impressively complex bouquet evokes ripe cherry, black raspberry, incense and potpourri, and smoky mineral and Asian spice nuances build with aeration. Silky, sweet and concentrated, yet lively as well, offering palate-staining red and dark berry, spicecake and floral pastille flavors that show outstanding clarity and back-end lift. Supple tannins frame the red-fruit-dominated finish, which hangs on with outstanding tenacity.”

Burghound 91-93 points
“This too is quite reduced yet from barely perceptible fruit seems fresh. As is usually the case there is slightly finer mouth feel to the broad-shouldered flavors that also possess fine mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in a firmly structured but not hard finish. This is youthfully austere with just a hint of rusticity and this too will definitely require patience.”
Wine Spectator 91 points “This is spicy, with sandalwood, vanilla, green olive and wild berry flavors building from start to finish. Balanced in a lean, tightly wound style, presenting a lingering, spicy aftertaste. Best from 2018 through 2032. 334 cases made.”

“This needs air to reveal the deep cherry and raspberry flavors. Pure, with mineral and earth details adding grace notes. Though balanced, this will require time for the structure and flavors to meld. Fine length. Best from 2020 through 2035. 367 cases made.”
Burghound 93 points “Reduction presently dominates the nose and I would again strongly suggest decanting this first if you’re going to sample a bottle before 2 to 3 years of age. On the palate there is a seductive texture to the velvety, complex and attractively mineral-inflected medium weight plus flavors that possess a fine sense of balance and deliver excellent finishing persistence along with impressive depth. This too is textbook.”

“Sweet Spot. A markedly ripe yet elegant nose that consists of rose petal, plum liqueur, lilac, spice and wet stone aromas is trimmed in enough wood to notice. The very rich, intense and wonderfully vibrant big-bodied flavors evidence obvious minerality on the mouth coating and impressively long finish. This is a big and refined effort that is very much built-to-age so patience required.”

“All the elements are here in this young red. The raspberry and cherry flavors are pure, framed by subtle oak spice notes and supported by a firm structure. The finish echoes fruit and spice details despite closing up a little. Best from 2019 through 2032. 98 cases made.”
Burghound 90-93 points “Reduction. Here the big-bodied flavors are both bigger and richer with fine volume and density before terminating in a velvety, palate coating and muscular finish. This is old school in style but not at all hard or even especially rustic though note well that patience will be required.”

Wine Spectator 93 points
“Though concentrated, this is also lean and chewy, with big, dusty tannins framing blackberry and blueberry fruit. Good acidity keeps this focused, though this will need some time for the structure to resolve. Fine length. Best from 2022 through 2036. 15 cases imported.”
Burghound 91-94 points “This too manages to be at once very ripe but attractively fresh with its liqueur-like aromas of dark currant, plum, lilac and warm earth. The powerful yet sleek medium weight plus flavors brim with dry extract thanks to the concentrated amount of sappy dry extract that imparts a velvety mouth feel to the hugely long finale. This is less rustic than it usually is though with that said, it’s less refined than its two big boy stablemates.”

“Chambolle as it should be”
Domaine Georges & Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny, Cote de Nuits 1999 750ML ($599.95)
$449 pre-arrival special, only 2 bottles available
“Good deep red. Enticing aromas of raspberry, flowers and spicy oak. Fat, lush and rich; at once plump and shapely. Pure flavors of spicy red fruits. A harmonious village wine with solid tannic structure and good aging potential.”-Stephen Tanzer-Vinous
“Absolutely classic Chambolle nose with elegant and delicate red fruits, medium weight flavors and excellent underlying material. This is moderately tannic with a dusty texture, quite rich and in perfect balance. Chambolle as it should be, displaying fine intensity. This will benefit from 5 to 8 years of cellar time.”-Burghound
This is the only listing in the USA today!
Domaine Georges & Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny, Cote de Nuits 2005 750ML ($449.95) $369 pre-arrival special, only 3 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 90 points
“Good medium red. Dark raspberry, coffee and spicy oak on the nose; this wine’s flamboyant ripeness almost came as a shock following the more reticent 2006s. Big, round, plush and ripe, with spicy dark raspberry and chocolate flavors and considerable density for village wine. Quite smooth and harmonious at the moment: Roumier volunteered that this is not as closed yet as he expected it would be.”
Burghound 89 points “Deep ruby. A pretty and very high-toned nose features a beguiling mix of red and black berry fruit and hints of underbrush and spice that introduce rich, precise and wonderfully fresh flavors that display a mineral streak on the energetic and persistent finish. A very attractive villages and worth a look plus it should deliver 5 to 7 years of upside development.”

Domaine Georges & Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny, Cote de Nuits 2010 750ML ($349.95) $279 pre-arrival special, only 4 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 90 points
“Bright, deep red. Sappy aromas of raspberry, spices and minerals. Sweet, supple and lush, offering excellent volume for village wine. The wine’s sappy quality gives it inner-mouth energy and early deliciousness. Christophe Roumier expressed the opinion in November that the 2012s don’t have enough tannins to really shut down in the bottle; on the other hand, he reported seeing more pips in 2010 than in 2011, a year in which the phenolic ripeness came earlier here.”
Burghound 90 points “Outstanding. This is exceptionally pretty and notably elegant as the nose features a moderately pitched combination of floral notes, red pinot and cassis aromas. There is a lovely mineral component to the satin-textured medium-bodied flavors where the supporting tannins are ultra-refined, all wrapped in a lacy and persistent finish. A classic Chambolle of finesse.”

Domaine Georges & Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny, Cote de Nuits 2012 750ML ($199.95) $179 pre-arrival special, only 3 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 90+ points
“Bright medium red. High-pitched aromas and flavors of raspberry, menthol, mint and crushed rock. Juicy and energetic for 2012 and perhaps already shutting down in the bottle. Almost painful on the back end today. This serious, firmly tannic village wine should be cellared at at least a few years.”
Burghound 89 points “Outstanding. This is also notably ripe with its pretty array of cassis, plum and violet aromas. There is a lovely texture to the elegant mineral-inflected and precise middle weight flavors that are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the balanced and solidly persistent finish. This saline-infused effort is very Chambolle in style.”

Domaine Georges & Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny, Cote de Nuits 2013 750ML ($189.95) $169 pre-arrival special, only 2 bottles available
Burghound 89 points
“Here the expressive nose is attractively elegant with its red berry fruit profile that is nuanced by floral elements and traces of earth and green tea. The silk-textured and vibrant medium weight flavors are very Chambolle in style before terminating in a lingering and firm finish that is slightly clipped at present. This will need 6 to 8 years to further flesh out ad my score offers the benefit of the doubt that it will do so.”

“a decidedly sumptuous Chambolle”
Domaine Georges & Christophe Roumier Les Cras, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru 2009 750ML ($479.95)
$379 pre-arrival special, only 1 bottle available
Antonio Galloni 92 points
“The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras is surprisingly huge and powerful, even within the context of the vintage. This is a decidedly sumptuous Chambolle that pushes the edge of ripeness. My impression is that the wine needs a few years to shed its baby fat.”
Burghound 92 points “This is also ripe but definitely fresher with lovely purity to the enveloping red pinot liqueur-like aromas that are trimmed in both spice and mineral nuances. The detailed, intense and stylish medium-bodied flavors brim with plenty of dry extract, all wrapped in an explosive, focused and lingering finish. A ripe but still classic Les Cras that is really quite classy.”

“Good bright, full red. Perfumed nose and palate offer very pure raspberry, smoke, minerals and sexy soil tones. Sweet, ripe and utterly suave, showing excellent concentration and intensity but also an exhilarating impression of weightlessness. Classic 2010 style, showing lovely refinement, a light touch, sweet tannins and terrific lingering perfume.”
Burghound 93 points “An ultra-fresh, cool, airy and admirably pure nose features crystal clear and transparent red pinot fruit and essence of stone. This is a bit firmer than the Combottes with even more evident minerality on the delicious, focused and beautifully well-delineated flavors that terminate in a precise, long, linear and palate staining finish. Terrific and worth a special search to find though be aware that this youthfully austere effort will required extended cellaring.”

Domaine Georges & Christophe Roumier Les Cras, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru 2011 750ML ($399.95) $319 pre-arrival special, only 1 bottle available
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 92 points
“Good bright red. Exotic red berry liqueur, flowers, passion fruit and peach on the nose. Fat and sweet for this cru; softer and less refined than the 2012 version. Still, this shows better inner-mouth tension than the Combottes and finishes firmer, with chewy tannins.”
Burghound 91 points “Outstanding. A gorgeously perfumed and intensely floral-suffused nose evidences hints of stone, red berries, anise and a bit of earth. There is really lovely detail and intensity to the precise, dusty and tension-filled medium-bodied flavors that exude a fine minerality on the mouth coating, linear, mildly austere and highly persistent finish where a saline nuance appears. This is quite good.”

Domaine Georges & Christophe Roumier Clos de la Bussiere, Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru 2011 750ML ($199.95) $169 pre-arrival special, only 2 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 92+ points
“Roumier’s 2011 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos de La Bussière is terrific. Dark plum and cherry notes meld into cloves, menthol and spices in a layered wine dripping with class. Veins of underlying minerality give the 2011 much of its energy and tension. Although Christophe Roumier’s wines have become objects of desire for Burgundy lovers all over the world, the Clos de La Bussière remains the most under-appreciated of his wines, mostly because it is often much less charming young than the Chambolles. Readers who can cellar the 2011 are in for a real treat.”
Burghound 91 points “Outstanding. A high-toned and attractively layered nose mixes notes of red and black cherry with earth and humus nuances. There is excellent detail and punch to the equally mineral-tinged medium-bodied flavors that possess relatively refined tannins that are notably finer than usual, all wrapped in a harmonious and solidly persistent finish. I like the fruit/acid balance and this should age well over the medium-term.”

“This is also remarkably fresh with cool and markedly earthy dark berry fruit aromas that exhibit much more floral influence as well. There is good concentration to the moderately powerful, intense and muscular medium-bodied flavors that are supported by firm and mildly rustic tannins on the impressively long finish. This is not an especially big Charmes but I like the delivery and balance.”

Domaine Georges & Christophe Roumier Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Aux Mazoyeres, Cote de Nuits 2013 750ML ($399.95) $319 pre-arrival special, only 1 bottle available
Burghound 93 points
“There is a hint of green tea to the cool and airy aromas of violets, earth and red and dark berries along with a hint of the sauvage. The mid-palate impression is notably finer than it normally is though the usual size, weight, intensity and muscle are present in the big-bodied flavors that display a lovely bead of minerality on the firm finish where the more typical rusticity appears; indeed this is borderline chewy. I like both the complexity as well as the persistence though the firmness of the supporting structure confirms that this will require a 12 to 15 year snooze in a cool cellar to fully resolve.”
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 91 points “Bright medium red. A touch of musky reduction to the aromas of strawberry and smoke. Fat and ripe for the year but without the fruit sweetness of the best examples here. Offers very good breadth and mouth coverage but doesn’t quite come alive today; more massive, earthbound and tannic than the Chambolle Les Cras, showing less floral lift. In a distinctly rich style for the year but heavier than the other wines at this address.”

Burghound 92 points
“Contrary to the usual pattern, this is actually more expressive than the Charmes with its cool, refined, pure and ripe nose of red and dark berry fruit that includes elements of truffle, crushed herb, earth and minerality, all of which can be found on the very primary and very fresh, sappy, powerful and focused flavors that are serious and while the underlying material of the Charmes is good, this is clearly better which is important because the tannins here are also moderately firmer and denser.”
Stephen Tanzer 92 points “Good bright, full red. Blueberry, smoked meat and sexy oak on the nose. Suave and fine-grained in the mouth, with very deep flavors of blueberry, blackberry and minerals. A step up in extract and depth from the preceding wines-not to mention sheer intensity of flavor. Really builds on the back half, finishing classically dry, broad and minerally, with dusty tannins nicely covered by fruit.”

“Roumier’s 2008 Ruchottes-Chambertin is drop-dead gorgeous. Layers of dark fruit, violets, pepper and flowers meld together in this multi-dimensional, beautifully textured wine. Despite its weightless elegance, this shows plenty of vitality, and a cool vibrant personality that will fully emerge only after several additional years in bottle.”

“Medium red. Subtle perfume of raspberry, underbrush and musky flowers. Silky on entry, then chewy, salty and deep in the middle, with a captivating savory quality and terrific nerve to the tactile red berry and earth flavors. This compellingly juicy, chewy, soil-inflected wine spreads out on the back to saturate the entire palate. Splendid long-term potential here, as the tannins are solid yet noble.”
Burghound 93 points “A distinctly floral nose is quite cool and restrained and only aggressive swirling grudgingly liberates nuances of ripe red currants that evidence subtle hints of truffle and stone. There is a velvety, indeed even silky mouth feel to the pure and highly energetic flavors that terminate in a moderately austere, clean, linear and explosive finish. This superbly complex and mineral-driven effort possesses a highly sophisticated mouth feel and should age very well for years to come.”

“Bright red. Sexy aromas of cherry, raspberry, menthol and truffley underbrush. Sappy and energetic, with good mineral energy to the flavors of red berries, spices and pepper. Lovely silky wine with a light touch and a firm spine of acids and tannins. A superb 2011 with a long finish.”
Burghound 93 points “A highly complex mélange exhibits notes of plum, violets, truffle, earth and plenty of sauvage character. The intensely mineral-driven flavors are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins as well as plenty of energy on the pure, balanced and linear finish. This is presently highly-restrained and youthfully austere and will require some time to flesh out; as such it is one of the Roumier 2011s that is not likely to be especially accessible young.”

“While aromatically reticent there is appealing breadth to the intensely floral, plum and dark currant aromas that display background hints of both earth and the sauvage. There is excellent intensity and freshness to the sleek middle weight flavors that evidence soil and mineral tones on the firm, cool and beautifully well-balanced finale that delivers very fine persistence. The stems used in the vinification contribute to the notably austere impression and it’s once again markedly clear that this is going to need plenty of development time.”
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 93+ points “Healthy full red. Musky, reticent nose offers lovely rose petal lift and sexy soil tones, with fruit in the background today. Calmer and less expressive than the wilder Charmes but boasts excellent floral energy and refinement–and lovely tension–in the mouth. Quite backward and tight today but already shows terrific class, punch and length. Finishes with firm tannins, a saline impression of extract and noteworthy mineral drive. “The 2013s say ‘don’t drink me now,'” said Roumier at this point in our tasting.”

$2,199 pre-arrival special, only 3 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 98 points
“Roumier’s 2009 Bonnes-Mares is without question one of the wines of the vintage. Firm yet beautifully integrated tannins provide the backdrop for the highly nuanced, expressive aromas and flavors that emerge from the glass. All the elements are in the right place in this extraordinary, moving wine. At times the Bonnes-Mares comes across as very powerful, at other times it is quite sensual. In other words, it is pure magic in the glass. Burgundy fans will flock to the Musigny because of its rarity but there is a very real possibility that the Bonnes-Mares will outshine it over time.”
Burghound 96 points “This is also remarkably fresh with very ripe but not over ripe aromas of cassis, spice, stone and raspberry liqueur. There is a palpable sense of energy running through the rich, powerful and brooding broad-shouldered flavors that benefit from a huge dollop of dry extract that pushes the very firm tannic spine to the background on the explosive and youthfully austere finish that possesses genuinely outstanding length. I very much like the balance here and this should age effortlessly for decades.”

“A very ripe yet fresh nose of dark berry fruit, violets and plum enjoy added breadth from the presence of spice, earth and distinct sauvage nuances. This sauvage aspect also characterizes the remarkably rich and full-bodied flavors that possess a velvety texture from the copious amounts of dry extract. The supporting structure possesses a high degree of phenolic maturity and outstanding length on the ever-so-slightly warm finish. This is relatively fine, at least within the context of the typical robust and chewy style of a classic Corton.”
Neal Martin-Wine Advocate 90-92 points “The 2010 Corton comes across as a bit light in this vintage. Attractive floral, spiced notes emerge from the glass in this perfumed, delicate wine. The Corton is pretty, but it is a clear notch or two below the rest of the wines in the lineup and is equally distant from the level of the thrilling 2009. The Corton is made in two vinifications, an old-vine cuvee and a young-vine cuvee. This blend was assembled about a week before I tasted it. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030.”

“A ripe, elegant and densely fruited nose exudes notes of violets, sandalwood, anise and dried black berries that precede supple, rich and attractively voluminous flavors that retain a fine sense of underlying detail on the wonderfully intense, persistent and quite firm finish. This is an absolutely stunning wine and every bit as good as the genuinely remarkable 2005.”
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 91+? points “Good bright, dark red. High-pitched, expressive aromas of raspberry, strawberry, minerals, pepper, wild herbs and flowers. Initially quite tight and peppery, with a dry-edged character, this slightly raw wine expanded somewhat with aeration. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and an impression of peppery austerity. The most inscrutable of this set of wines today.”

“The 2011 Échézeaux literally jumps from the glass with a heady melange of dark red fruit, sweet floral notes and crushed rocks. Rich and explosive on the palate, yet backed up with significant structure and pure intensity, the 2011 is firing on all cylinders. First and foremost, the Échézeaux is a wine of pure texture. The Échézeaux emerges from 7-8 parcels in the Poulallières climat. There is so much to like here.”
Burghound 93 points “A discreet touch of wood sets off the gorgeously floral, ripe and wonderfully spicy nose of red currant, menthol, black cherry and cassis aromas. There is impressive volume and richness to the naturally sweet, silky and mouth coating medium weight flavors that are shaped by fine-grained tannins on the firm, complex, balanced and strikingly persistent finale that really fans out as it lingers on the palate. This wine continues to make really impressive progress.”
Neal Martin-Wine Advocate 90 points “Picked on 10 and 11 September at 22.04hl/ha, the Echezeaux Grand Cru has a delicate, quite feminine bouquet with scents of fresh strawberry, undergrowth and just a hint of dry tobacco. It opens nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly brusque entry. The tannins are quite pointed here, creating a more angular Echezeaux compared to the 2011, whilst it needs to develop just a little more flesh and weight towards the back end that feels a little brittle and attenuated at the moment. Still, there is a fine saline, almost nori seaweed tang on the aftertaste – a nice twist in the tail. 1,030 cases produced. Drink now-2027.”

“A rich, explosive wine, the 2012 Échézeaux is a real overachiever. Here the flavors are expansive, dense and layered, with all of the intensity of the year very much in evidence. Discussing the relative merits of vineyards is one of the central aspects of appreciating Burgundy. This tasting shows why Échézeaux is not as highly regarded as some other grand crus. Specifically, the quality of the wines is more vintage dependent here than it is elsewhere.”
Burghound 93 points “Here the floral and spice characters are quite prominent on the sandalwood and spice suffused red and dark currant aromas. The suave yet well-detailed medium-bodied flavors brim with dry extract before terminating in a very firm but not hard green tea-inflected finish that delivers excellent length and impressive depth. I very much like the balance and about the only nit is a hint of warmth. As I have observed several times recently, this wine continues to make real progress relative to what was typically good but not exceptional quality in the context of the appellation. 2012 definitely continues that upward progress.”
Neal Martin-Wine Advocate 92 points “I adored the 2012 Echézeaux Grand Cru from barrel and I adore it from bottle. Picked on September 29-30 at 22 hectoliters per hectare, those explosive aromatics from barrel are replicated here with bright red cherries, kirsch and rose petals, all beautifully defined and imbued with a sense of exuberance. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin, a dash of white pepper on the tip of the tongue and a beautifully poised, elegant finish. This is an Echézeaux determined to be above its station. Wonderful. 1,057 cases produced.”

“A wonderfully complex nose features a broad array of spice elements with those of plum, violet, sandalwood and Asian-style tea that are also trimmed in soft wood nuances. There is good punch to the refined, cool and pure medium-bodied flavors that possess better concentration on the balanced, persistent and youthfully austere finale where the only nit is a very subtle hint of warmth. Of all of the wines in the Domaine’s portfolio, in my view the Ech is the most improved over the last 10 years and it shows as the 2014 is bigger and more powerful than usual.”
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 93+ points “Full, dark red, Sappy scents of black raspberry, violet and licorice are higher-pitched and considerably less earthy than those of the Corton. Chewy and penetrating in the mouth, conveying strong energy and a restrained sweetness to the tactile flavors of plum, berries, spices and pepper. This wine, too, delivers the saline minerality of the year, but there’s more than enough fruit here to support it. Finishes with terrific rising length. Bertrand de Villaine described this wine as “pleasant and present” but I find it more serious than that.”
Neal Martin-Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2014 Echézeaux Grand Cru was picked on 24, 25 and 26 September at 27.8 hectoliters per hectare. It offers an expressive bouquet, more vivacious than the 2012 Echézeaux, with scents of black plum, raspberry preserve and subtle limestone aromas. It unfolds with confidence in the glass. The palate is surprisingly structured on the entry, perhaps with ambitions towards its elder brother, the Grands Echézeaux. There is a gentle, slightly leafy quality to this Grand Cru, perhaps more masculine and reserved than other vintages tasted just after bottling. The aftertaste feels long with a cheeky pinch of black pepper. Probably one of the most approachable 2014s from the domaine, and just as likely to be drunk too young! 1,443 cases produced.”

“[Apr 2018] The 1999 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru is a wine that I had not tasted since just after bottling when I rhapsodized upon its sumptuousness. Now, as it approaches adulthood, I am still totally enamored by this wine. Firstly, it has a deeper colour than the 1999 Echézeaux and the bouquet is unequivocally more nuanced, a mixture of red and black fruit, hints of black truffle and iron filings, all with impressive vigor and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with sublime balance, perfectly pitched acidity and a sense of harmony that is beguiling. There is symmetry to this Grands Echézeaux. Everything is in its right place and it harnesses the precocity of the vintage without allowing it to overcome the terroir. With aeration it just seems to get better and better, so do not be afraid to decant this. Tasted at the 1999 DRC dinner.”
Burghound 95 points “[Jul 2017] While I had tasted this many times shortly after release, I hadn’t had the chance to see it again since 2008 so it was nice to update my acquaintance. Though subtle, there is still a touch off oak framing the ripe and penetrating red and blackberry fruits and oriental spice aromas comprising the nose. There is outstanding power to the beautifully detailed and quite robust flavors that deliver excellent precision and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced finale. This is a big wine with richness, superb length and impressive refinement and it’s clear that this will live for decades. In sum, this is very classy juice with plenty of upside development potential remaining.”

“The 2005 Romanée-St. Vivant is both incredibly aromatic and vibrant, but, then again, it is Romanée-St. Vivant. Here, the impression is of pure verticality and towering structure. A bit darker and more brooding than RSV often is, the 2005 is a wine built for cellaring. Perhaps because it is the first wine I tasted from the domaine, I have always had a weak spot for the RSV. The 2005 is magnificent, but it is also a wine for those who can be patient.”
Burghound 97 points “An incredibly perfumed and supremely elegant if exceptionally ripe nose features notes of various black fruit scents that are replete with soy, hoisin, clove and anise nuances. There is outstanding power and richness to the refined, detailed and very firmly structured flavors that culminate in a precise, pure and driving finish that goes on and on. This is a really impressive effort that offers terrific potential but fans of this wine should note that it is arguably more masculine than it usually is yet at the same time utterly seamless. In sum this is arguably the finest RSV that the Domaine has ever produced.”
David Schildknecht-Wine Advocate 96-97 points “Just as this year’s Echezeaux challenges the quality of the Grands-Echezeaux, another surprise of the vintage is a spectacular showing for the 2005 Romanee-St.-Vivant. A startlingly dark, mouth-watering amalgam of purple plum paste, blackberry preserves, bitter chocolate, toasted walnut, soy, and raw beef intrigues the nose. On the palate, this cleaves to the dark side, with viscous, mouth-coating concentration of lightly-cooked black fruits, charred meat, mysterious forest floor complexity, and bitter-sweet florality, but simultaneously delivers a vibratory finish like that of the energetic Grands-Echezeaux. With its palpable extract, profound personality, and refined but abundant tannins, this is surely wine to set aside for at least a decade.”
