Selbach-Oster
As the winemaker and owner of Selbach-Oster, Johannes Selbach makes profound and affordable German Rieslings. Because they aren’t showy or extreme and instead lean towards moderate levels of alcohol and residual sugar, the wines are overlooked by reviewers that prefer a more bombastic style. Sure, Selbach could make more opulent wines and rack up points—but he’s not one to cave to trends. As a result, the wines are useful at table. You can drink his delicate and soulful Spätlesen and Auslesen wines with your main course, not just dessert. You’d be shocked at how flexible the bone-dry GGs and ethereal Kabinetts are, too.
Chez Vinopolis, we have worked directly with Johannes Selbach for many years. The selections have varied with the vintage: we’ve picked up a pallet or two of Selbach-Oster wines, we’ve carried wines he personally tasted and selected at the Bernkasteler Ring auction (more akin to a showcase of estate’s top wines than an American-style auction), and sometimes we’ve loaded up on underrepresented producers he admires such as Prinz, Karlsmuhle and Kees-Kieren.
The wide array of Selbach-Oster wines we have in stock were hand-picked for our shop by Johannes Selbach himself. These are his treasures, what he wants us to share with you. We’re proud to offer them and excited to present them to you on our three-day sale.
“There are no wines along the Mosel more honorable than those of Selbach-Oster. They are grounded, honest, intelligent and meaningful – like the family who produce them. Where wine is concerned I trust Johannes as I trust very few other people. He’s not only highly intelligent, he’s also smart and judicious. He has found his path. His wines have identity and purpose.” -Terry Theise, 2009 German Catalogue (emphasis in original)

Champagne Featurette:
Bérêche et Fils
As one of the Vinopolis staff’s favorite producers, the Bereche Champagnes enchant us with near-magical tension and overwhelming complexity. They’ve mastered the art of dosage at this estate and the wines show incredible balance. This used to just be a label that professionals in the wine business knew about and adored, but now the cats out of the bag and these bottlings are earning followers far and wide. Stock up before the price matches the quality.
In Stock Now:
Bérêche et Fils Brut Réserve, Champagne, NV (2021 BASE) 750ml $69 special, 14 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 91 points “The NV Brut Réserve (base 2021) is a bit unusual in this release, in that reserve wines account for 45% of the blend because the base year was so challenging. It’s an approach that worked out well though, as the finished wine is gorgeous. Pear, apricot, white flowers, spice, mint and almond all grace this nuanced, classy NV Champagne. Floral overtones appear later to lift the finish. Dosage is 5.2 grams per liter. Disgorged : November 2023.”
Bérêche et Fils Aÿ Grand Cru Extra Brut Millésime, Champagne 2016 750ml $219 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points “The 2016 Extra-Brut Aÿ Grand Cru is all class. Bright and focused to the core, with striking understated energy, the 2016 is a jewel of a wine. Crushed rocks, mint, slate, white flowers and white pepper soar out of the glass, supported by clean mineral notes that bring it all together on the vibrant finish. The blend of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay on chalk is magical. Dosage is 2.95 grams per liter.”
Raphaël & Vincent Bérêche Oger Grand Cru Extra Brut, Côte des Blancs, Champagne 2016 750ml $135 special, 22 bottles in stock now
VinopolNote: Oger is a tiny, Grand Cru village in the Côte des Blancs region of Champagne. It is often mistaken for Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, given the similarity in name. In Peter Liem’s book, “Champagne” Rodolphe Péters of Pierre Péters describes it as producing wines with “delicate with aromas of red fruit and tangerine.” Liem goes on to describe the village as producing riper and more fragrant wines than Mesnil due to the east-facing bowl that captures sunlight. Wine from the village is also used as the basis for Charles Heidsieck’s Grand Cru Côte des Blancs blends.
Bérêche et Fils Les Beaux Regards Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs, Champagne 2020 750ml $124.50 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points “The 2020 Extra-Brut Beaux Regards (100% Chardonnay) is bright, floral and lifted. Chalky soils in Ludes planted with 60-year-old vines yield a Champagne of exquisite finesse and nuance. White flowers, mint, crushed rocks, white pepper, chalk and slate are all beautifully delineated in this understated, sculpted Chardonnay from Bérêche.”
Bérêche et Fils Reflet d’Antan Brut, Champagne NV (Base 2018) 1.5L $849 special, 1 magnum in stock now
Importer Note “Arguably the most original of all in this lineup of singular Champagnes is the Reflet d’Antan, one-third each of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, drawn from a perpetual reserve of 600-liter barrels begun in 1985 by Raphaël’s and Vincent’s father, Jean- Pierre.”
Bérêche et Fils “Une” Millésime, Champagne 2014 750ml $799 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points “The 2014 Une Champagne is a blend of Beauxregards, Le Cran, Mailly, Ambonnay, Aÿ, Cramant and Rilly La Montagne, an intriguing combination, to say the least. Creamy and textured, the 2014 offers up an exotic mélange of orchard fruit, spice and flowers, with attractive tropical notes that develop with a bit of coaxing. It’s a fitting conclusion to this tasting at Bérêche.”
