Silver Oak Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2011 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special, ETA February 5th
“Our 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is an elegant representation of Napa Valley Cabernet from a cool vintage. It presents an opaque garnet hue in the glass and reveals aromas of sandalwood and roasted meats. Flavors of vanilla, coffee beans and raspberries are buttressed by dusty tannins, firm acidity and a mouth-coating texture. Given proper cellaring, this wine should provide drinking pleasure through 2029.” -Winery Notes

Francois Cotat
Arriving February 5th
Francois Cotat Sancerre Les Caillottes 2014 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special
Importer note “Francois has been vinifing “Caillottes” separately since 2005; the vineyard name refers to a type of soil found in Sancerre—very rocky and chalky.”
Francois Cotat Sancerre Les Culs de Beaujeu 2014 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Importer note “The terroir of “Culs de Beaujeu” blends clay and chalk for a Sancerre that delivers more texture and supple fruit in the mouth.”
Francois Cotat Sancerre La Grande Cote 2014 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Importer note “The cooler vineyard site (with its older, 40+ year old vines) of “Grand Côte” is the last to be harvested of all Francois’ small parcels; it delivers fruit that is incredibly precise and yet deeply complex in flavor.”
Francois Cotat Sancerre Les Monts Damnes 2014 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Importer note “These “damned mountains” are so named for their steepness and challenge in harvesting. (The family invented a system where one slides down the hill on a cushion, picking grapes as you go.) The most chalky and chiseled of François’ Sancerres. Always the cornerstone of the Cotat canon.”

Gruner Veltliner &
New Arrivals from Schloss Gobelsberg
Over a third of Austria’s land under vine is planted with Gruner Veltliner; no other varietal comprises of more than ten percent. Naturally derivative from the Traminer and St. Georgen grapes, Gruner is known for being a fresh, fruity, easy to drink wine. Over the past few years – with the rise of ‘next big thing’-obsessed sommeliers and small-but-mighty wine shops – the grape has been elevated to a status of renewed seriousness and respect. With that, the ever-expanding wine drinker’s palate has grown to include this wine which was once commercially overproduced to the point of being sold near-exclusively in liter format.
It’s not fair, however, to dwell on the liter. (For one, it’s quite the befitting size of a wine bottle!) But seriously, Austria has been host to vibrant winemaking culture with a broad range of terroirs and quite the complementary style of cuisine. Gruner, in particular, is most common in Niederösterreich (lower Austria) and northern Burgenland (to the country’s eastern border). Among the most esteemed regions for the grape are Wachau, Kremstal and Kamptal – all valley-lain areas which border the picturesque Danube River.
From the highest-end bottles to the everyday sippers, Gruner is known for its aromatic bouquet of white pepper and a broad range of flavors including white flowers, citrus fruits, mint, fresh green beans, cut grass, herbs, and salt. The grape, much like Riesling, is adept at capturing the essence of its terroir, and climate. Granite and gneiss soils lend a beautiful mineral edge to these wines; they’re round and structured and, almost paradoxically, big but not heavy.
Oak is used seldom – if sparingly – in the elevage of most Gruner, and even more seldom than that is new oak employed. Like with many Rieslings, malolactic fermentation is typically halted. Often fresh and easygoing in infancy, Gruner Veltliner has proven times over to age quite wonderfully; secondary notes of peat, almond, black pepper, biscuit, and honey marry to the fruit and flower one is accustomed to with the grape.
Our outstanding selection of Gruner Veltliner includes a range of vintages and styles. Among the most celebrated producers are FX Pichler, Nikolaihof, Ott, Alzinger, and Gobelsburg – each well represented here.
Newly Arrived Gruners from Schloss Gobelsburg
Schloss Gobelsburg Renner Gruner Veltliner Reserve Erste OTW Lage 2013 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
David Schildknecht–Vinous 95 points “From Renner’s geologically complex Urgestein mix characteristically emerges a Grüner Veltliner of comparable complexity that’s indescribable without resorting to mineral vocabulary, and that is certainly true of this 2013. But there is so much more going on that it nearly makes me dizzy. A heady nose of lilac and iris, radish and raw ginger, along with hints of citrus and roasted root vegetables, sets the tone for what follows, an explosively concentrated interaction of grippingly piquant, pungent, incisive and brightly juicy elements. Apple and lime, caramelized parsnip and golden beet are mingled with smoky nut oils and laced with ginger, radish, iris root and white pepper. The reverberating finish adds to a kaleidoscopic whirl of the aforementioned elements an otherwise ineffable ore-like depth and saliva-inducing salinity. I was holding my breath that what I first tasted would be captured in bottle with complete success, and that’s happened.”
Schloss Gobelsburg Lamm Gruner Veltliner Reserve Erste OTW Lage 2014 750ML ($79.95) $49 special
Terry Theise notes “Sensational fragrance! Richly, sweetly LAMM. The palate is taut, powerful, markedly spicy; it’s the 2006 this most resembles yet the alc is much lower, between 13-13.5%. Early days yet for this. Lamm as a rule is buckwheat-y, rusky, savory but not thick, like a vegetable-veal stock with barley, yet oddly also like lamb itself. (“Lamm” doesn’t mean lamb, but is rather a dialect word for “loam.”) It is a great wine though virtually without fruit per se. Its poise of gloss and power, intensity and outline, mass and transparency are emblems of the paradox without which no wine is truly great.”
This is the only listing in the USA today!
Schloss Gobelsburg Steinsetz Gruner Veltliner Reserve Erste OTW Lage, Kamptal 2014 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
Terry Theise notes “This ever-deepening wine has a lysergic moment in ’14; high-toned, almost hoppy aroma, with notes of lima beans and dill; picked the 2nd week in November; the palate is wonderfully juicy, like extra-virgin grapeseed oil; the fruit is “sweet” and the umami is ludicrously spicy. The site sits on a plateau on ancient Danube riverbed stones, and for many years it was radishy and stinging, as if it were fined with scree and stirred with a peppermint stick. A little of that character still remains, but the older vines (now around 15) have sunk roots deep enough to reach the aquifer, and the wines too are deeper.”
Schloss Gobelsburg GV Tradition Gruner Veltliner Reserve, Kamptal 2013 750ML ($79.95) $69 special
David Schildknecht–Vinous 97-98 points “Faintly yeasty and alkaline notes in the nose accompany intimations of the rich, earthy, umami-laden foundation of subtly caramelized root vegetables that the palate delivers, studded with peppercorns and drizzled with fragrant floral honey. Satiny in texture, searchingly expansive, yet buoyant and preserving a vibrant core of sheer refreshment, this enters a finishing realm of oyster liquor-like salinity, oceanic mineral and seaweedy depth, that will milk your salivary glands while leaving your mouth agape. (Any embarrassment will be well worth it.)” DS
Below is a selection of 10 Gruners from a variety of Austria’s wine regions of the 41 different bottlings of Gruner we offer:
Weingut Leo Alzinger Loibner Steinertal Gruner Veltliner Federspiel, Wachau 2014 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 9 bottles available
Terry Theise notes “By alcohol (12.8, though the label will say 12.5) you could have argued for Smaragd, especially us geezers who remember dem wines, so this is in effect a borderline Smaragd at a bargain price. And whatever—the name is what it is, but the wine is wonderful; super-peppery and full of tarragon in the Zalto, more sapid and juicy in the tulip—and also more phenolic, so a nod to Zalto this time, for pushing the vivid sweet sting of the vineyard forward and yielding a minty finale. I also miss the chervil notes in the tulip. (This stuff will make you crazy…) but the wine will just make you happy.”

Weingut Leo Alzinger Muhlpoint Gruner Veltliner Federspiel, Wachau 2014 750ML ($34.95) $28 special, 20 bottles available
Terry Theise notes “A “little” wine with big density, tactile with extract, scree, rock-dust; more boxwood than green bean (though that too is there), but it’s the clarity and mineral authority so impressive here.”

Malat Gruner Veltliner, Kremstal 2014 750ML ($21.95) $18 special, 10 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 89 points “The 2014 vintage was cool and difficult in Austria but conscientious winemakers delivered wines of incredible refreshment and verve. This bottling offers citrus, white pepper, lemon zest and a touch of green pear. If you like it slender, sleek and refreshing, grab this now.”
Weingut Hirsch Lamm Gruner Veltliner Erste Lage OTW Reserve Trocken, Kamptal 2011 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 25 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 92 points “Slowly emerging aromas of honeyed peach, lime zest and ripe plum. Harmoniously herbal and subtly austere, with wonderfully integrated acidity lending a particularly refreshing quality to the peach and apricot flavors. This is less a veltliner to drink on its own than a very versatile food wine.” ST

Weingut Bernhard Ott Feuersbrunner Rosenberg Gruner Veltliner Erste OTW Lage, Wagram 2013 750ML ($64.95) $51.90 special, 6 bottles available
David Schildknecht–Vinous 93 points “An alluringly musky and rose petal-like floral perfume mingles with scents of sweet pea, caramelized turnip and parsnip that come to the fore on a mouthwateringly savory, silky, almost creamy palate. It’s a bit as though a Grüner Veltliner had been laced with Gewurztraminer. A tart-edged strawberry-rhubarb note emerges by way of counterpoint. Toasted grain, ginger and mouthwatering salinity of shrimp-shell reduction serve for stimulation in a long, buoyant, soothing finish. Of the three single-vineyard Ott bottlings, this gained the most between its showing immediately before bottling and its showing a year later, which is consistent with its history of slow bottle evolution.”
Wine Advocate 92 points “According to Bernhard Ott, the 2013 Grüner Veltliner Rosenberg Erste Lage comes from “the very best loess cru of the Wagram.” The vineyard (in 280 and 320 meters above sea level) is located in a topographic basin that is open to the south but provides a high level of protection from the wind and has an excellent heat-conserving capacity. The vineyard is bordered to the north by a mixed forest on Tertiary gravels from a former watercourse of the Danube River whereas the calcareous, silty soils of the vineyards developed from a thick blanket of loess which can be up to 20 meters thick. Ott’s vines are more than 50 old and give a remarkable elegant and well balanced Veltliner with an intense citrus color and a lovely purity of ripe, juicy peaches and mangoes intermixed with fresh, clear mineral flavors on the nose. Gentle and remarkably elegant on the palate, the full-bodied wine matches its natural richness and fruit intensity with freshness and a nice piquancy in a very delicious way. Its elegance and balance is really beautiful.”
Familie Saahs Nikolaihof im Weingebirge Smaragd Gruner Veltliner, Wachau 2012 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 18 bottles available
David Schildknecht–Vinous 92 points “An intriguing, ethereal nose suggests iris, ginseng, moss, beet root and a hint of blond tobacco. Beet, turnip and kohlrabi inform a plushly textured, expansive yet for Smaragd amazingly buoyant palate. Alkalinity, stoniness and tincture of iodine lend cut and a certain austerity to a finish that flashes back to the complexity of the wine’s bouquet. Those with a predilection for Nikolaihof wines (such as I) are going to appreciate this bottling more than my score might suggest.”

F.X. Pichler Durnsteiner Kellerberg Gruner Veltliner Smaragd, Wachau 2012 750ML ($89.95) $79 special, 6 bottles available
Joel Payne-Vinous 94 points “Unctuous aromas of tropical fruit, spicy tobacco and white pepper. Opulent, juicy apricot extract emerges on the palate, where it’s joined by strong minerality. This rich wine offers a delicate interplay of sweetness and acidity interwoven with a wet stone character. Excellent potential.”
Wine Advocate 94 points “The Pichlers’ 2012 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Kellerberg boasts a luscious pear and apple fruit fundament backed by a lush, glycerol-rich texture, with complementary overtones of honeysuckle and lily of the valley perfume. Yet for all of the richness my aforementioned description implies, this also boasts a remarkable sense of primary juiciness as well as lift, leading to a finish of refined, polished, succulent length, stimulatingly suffused with crushed stone and pungent Szechuan pepper. As another demonstration of how important is the character of an individual vineyard in ways that can’t be captured analytically, this wine is well over 14% in alcohol despite its buoyancy, whereas the corresponding Liebenberg at 13.5% reminds you of its alcohol and lacks levity. “One factor,” observes Lucas Pichler “is that Kellerberg is in the shadow after mid-afternoon while Liebenberg gets sun well into the evening.” Plan to follow this Kellerberg through at least 2025.”
F.X. Pichler Durnsteiner Liebenberg Gruner Veltliner Smaragd, Wachau 2012 750ML ($69.95) $55 special, 19 bottles available
Joel Payne-Vinous 93 points “Ripe pear, snap pea and soft herbal spices on the beautifully nuanced nose. Steely and aristocratic on the palate, showing darker fruits and more acidity than the Loibenberg, with concentrated green mango, yellow plum and celery flavors over a layer of flinty slate. Despite its impressive opulence, this is subtle, precise and pure, probably due to the extreme age of the vineyard.”
Falstaff 92-94 points “[translated] Medium greenish yellow. Attractive yellow tropical fruit, delicate pineapple and peach, with fresh wild herbs and delicately highlighted with orange zest. Powerful, a fine touch of honey, sweet extracted core, subtle acid structure, mineral reverberation, yellow fruity finish, a hint of opulence.”
Wine Advocate 90 points “A sweetly ripe tropical fruitiness of pineapple and pink grapefruit marks the F. X. Pichler 2012 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Liebenberg, to which a positively sizzling impingement of citrus zest, pineapple core and white pepper lends counterpoint. There is a faintly soapy texture, and the aforementioned sizzle is reinforced in the finish by slightly noticeable (even though analytically only 13.5%) alcohol. Some terroirists (like myself) might anticipate a cooling and dynamic influence from the active lime in this vineyard’s soil, but it isn’t forthcoming. My explanation is that the tendency toward slight shriveling of berries in this site – also, of course, arguably a terroir factor – counteracts any such chalk influence, as well as resulting in a diminished sense of juiciness. All in all, this rich, rather static wine is likely to appeal most before 2017.”

Weingut Emmerich Knoll ‘Vinothekfullung’ Gruner Veltliner Smaragd, Wachau 2013 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 24 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 points “Always made with botrytis grapes, the 2013 Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Loibner Vinothekfullung offers a very clear and intense, though noble and fresh, aroma of honeydew melon, pineapples and hints of lychee. Very rich in extract and highly concentrated on the palate, this opulent yet still well-balanced wine is one to be enjoyed in small sips rather than in bottles (at least when it’s so young). This is an impressively rich and velvety textured wine, indeed, though it lacks the tension and freshness of the Schütt at the moment.” WA

Weingut Willi Brundlmayer Alte Reben Gruner Veltliner Reserve, Kamptal 2008 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 special, 10 bottles available
Terry Theise notes: “You get to make a stylistic choice; the ’08 is out of diapers, and it’s all green beans and twigs, with the cool angularity of the vintage, and with a kind of power having little to do with strength but rather with a precise expressiveness.”

Domaine d’Ardhuy
At the very southern tip of the Cote de Nuits, you’ll find a quintessentially old-school chateau: moss and ivy growing along its age-pocked walls, mansard roofs and steep chimneys and all. Tidy rows of vines line the entryway, all part of a terroir which has produced wine grapes since the 10th Century. Herein lies Domaine d’Ardhuy, where over forty different wines – grands and premier crus, mostly – are produced within what could be seen as the heart of Burgundy.
The d’Ardhuy family has owned the estate for four generations; their vineyard holdings include parcels across Corton, Ladoix, Savigny, and Clos de Vougeot. Their winemaking style includes biodynamic farming, harvesting at optimum maturity, traditional oak aging, and stirring of the lees during elevage. Since 2003, Dutchman Carel Voorhuis has been head winemaker at the estate. Voorhuis has stated his goal at the helm of the 69-year-old estate is to respect tradition, increase concentration in the wines, and allow terroir to shine through in his cuvees.
We currently carry five cuvees from the 2010 vintage – a vintage which was initially rather difficult but emerged, come harvest, as a rather classically “Burgundian” vintage – ripe, racy, and balanced.

Domaine d’Ardhuy Clos des Langres Monopole Rouge, Cote de Nuits 2010 750ML ($49.95) $33 special, 22 bottles available
Burghound 88 points “Bright ruby. An agreeably fresh nose of red and black currants, plum and earth gives way to precise and attractively vibrant flavors that are unusually refined in the context of the appellation. There is only moderate depth but I like the balance and overall persistence. Good quality here.” BH

Domaine d’Ardhuy Les Peuillets, Savigny-les-Beaunes Premier Cru 2010 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 11 bottles available
VinopolNote: Selection massale Pinot Noir vines. Vines average 31 years old on calcium and lime soil. Wine is not treated by enzymes or heat. Aged for approximately one year in 30% new oak barrels. Unfined, lightly filtered.

Domaine d’Ardhuy Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2010 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, 18 bottles available
Burghound 92 points “This is also quite somber and restrained with an intensely earthy character to the otherwise pretty red currant and wild berry aromas. There is equally good intensity to the supple medium weight plus flavors that display good power and fine concentration on the balanced, long and moderately austere finish. This is very much a typical Clos de Vougeot that will need time to flesh out.” BH

Domaine d’Ardhuy Corton Pougets Grand Cru 2010 750ML ($99.95) $79 special, 14 bottles available
Burghound 91 points “An openly earthy nose also offers up notes of dark berries, plum, stone and dried floral nuances. There is a velvety and utterly delicious quality to the solidly concentrated and mouth coating flavors that also reflect an underlying minerality on the long finish that displays fine balance. This isn’t quite as complete as the other examples of Corton in the range but it’s the finest among them.”

Domaine d’Ardhuy Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2010 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 1 bottle available
Burghound 93 points “This is surprisingly elegant with its strikingly pure nose of red currants, spice and distinctly pungent earth. There is a coolness to the relatively supple mid-palate with ample minerality to the firm, balanced, long and imposing finish. This is a dazzlingly good Clos du Roi though note that this will need a minimum of 12 to 15 years to be at its best and thus I would not advise buying this if you’re not planning to bury it deep in your cellar.” BH

The Wonders of Washington
Cadence Winery
Cadence is an urban winery based in an industrial warehouse in southern Seattle. Proprietors Ben Smith and Gaye McNutt are former aviation/tech workers whose love for wine inspired them to create their beautiful Bordeaux-style blends. Cadence source their fruit from Red Mountain AVA vineyards such as Ciel du Cheval, Tapteil, and their estate vineyards, Cara Mia. Their envoy includes blends and single-vineyard bottlings; their wines have achieved huge acclaim and earned Cadence a top spot in Washington’s wine scene.
Cadence Wines Available Here Now:
Cadence Winery Camerata Cara Mia Vineyard, Red Mountain 2012 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 12 bottles available
Wine Advocate 95 points “Sensational stuff, the 2012 Camerata (91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Cabernet Franc) is big, burly effort that offers classic Red Mountain structure and depth. Giving up lots of black cherry, crushed rocks, dried violets and graphite, it is savory, powerful and concentrated on the palate. It needs 4-5 years of cellaring and will hold for two decades after that.” JD
Wine Spectator 95 points “Vibrant, focused and aristocratic, centering on generous plum, currant, blackberry and floral aromas and flavors that play out against well-modulated, crisp tannins. Has presence and excellent length. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2017 through 2025. 225 cases made.” HS

Cadence Winery Bel Canto Cara Mia Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Mountain 2012 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 12 bottles available
Case-12 Cadence Winery Bel Canto Cara Mia Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Mountain 2012 750ML ($749.95) $649 special, 1 case available (that’s only $54.08/bottle and the lowest listed price in the USA today!)
Wine Advocate 95 points “I think the most approachable in the lineup, the 2012 Bel Canto has a complex, perfumed style in its dried flowers, dried spices, vanilla and black cherry and black raspberry-like fruit profile. A blend of 84% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 8% Petit Verdot that spent 20 months in 50% new French oak, it’s full-bodied, concentrated and structured on the palate, yet has perfect balance and a great texture. Few in the US are doing Cabernet Franc better this, and I suspect it will hold nicely for 15-20 years.” JD
Cadence Winery Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Red, Red Mountain 2012 750ML ($54.96) $46 special, 36 bottles available
Case-12 Cadence Winery Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Red, Red Mountain 2012 750ML ($599.95) $479 special, 1 case available (that’s only $39.92/bottle and the lowest listed price in the USA today!)
Wine Advocate 94+ points “A blend of 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot and 12% Petit Verdot that spent 18 months in 40% new French oak, the 2012 Ciel du Cheval Vineyard has lifted notes of black raspberry, black cherry, violets, spring flowers and vanilla bean. This gives way to a full-bodied, thrillingly balanced and concentrated palate that has building tannin, a stacked mid-palate and a great finish. Short-term cellaring is advised here, and it will have two decades or more of longevity.”
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 93 points “Bright ruby-red. The dark berry aromas display a chocolatey ripeness and considerable early appeal. Then sweet, ripe and silky but with plenty of harmonious acidity and underlying minerality to energize the savory dark berry flavors. Finishes with big but thoroughly ripe tannins and plenty of structure for aging. I would not be surprised if this wine shut down in the bottle; it should be long-lived.” ST
Cadence Winery Tapteil Vineyard Red, Red Mountain 2012 750ML ($54.95) $46 special, 33 bottles available
Case-12 Cadence Winery Tapteil Vineyard Red, Red Mountain 2012 750ML ($599.95) $479 special, 2 cases available (that’s only $39.92/bottle!)
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 93+ points “Bright ruby-red. Red berries, cocoa powder and licorice on the nose. Tightly wound and youthfully imploded, conveying an impression of density without weight. Dark fruit and mineral flavors show terrific lift but are extremely backward in the early going. “Drink this with a big steak or hold it for four years,” suggests Ben Smith, adding that the 1999 Tapteil is great right now. Finishes with a firm tannic spine and outstanding subtle length and lift. This wine was aged in 40% new oak and was racked a total of just three times. Incidentally, I also got an early look at the 2013 Tapteil, and that impressively intense wine may need even longer aging than the ’12, due in part to its higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon.”
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2012 Tapteil Vineyard is elegant and complex, with lots of minerality in its red plums, blueberry and floral bouquet. Full-bodied, mouth filling, layered and pure, with lots of tannin on the mid-palate and finish, it needs short-term cellaring and will be another 2012 from Ben that will see its 20th birthday in fine form. The blend here is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc, all of which spent 18 months in 40% new French oak.”

Charles Smith K Vintners The Boy Grenache – Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2013 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 10 bottles available
Winery notes “88% Grenache, 12% Syrah from the Northridge & River Rock Vineyards. A regal wine. A beautiful ruby robe, velvety and revealing – layer upon layer of supple and refined fruit. Layers of ‘je ne sais quoi,’ complex, sophisticated and elegant wine.”
Reynvaan Family Vineyards ‘The Contender’ Syrah – Marsanne, Walla Walla Valley 2013 750ML ($89.95) $79 special, 19 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94-96 points “Blended with 3% Marsanne, the 2013 Syrah The Contender is still aging in 35% new French oak, some of which are larger puncheons. Showing the purity and focus of the vintage, it gives up lots of cassis, black raspberry, licorice and some meatiness to go with a full-bodied, elegant and fabulously textured feel on the palate. I’m not sure it matches the awesome 2012, but it’s no lightweight and will certainly impress on release and over the following decade.” JD

Betz Family Winery La Cote Rousse Syrah, Red Mountain 2013 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 15 bottles available
Wine Advocate 95+ points “Much more mineral driven than the La Serenne release, the 2013 Syrah la Cote Rousse comes all from Red Mountain and is always 100% Syrah. Like the other Syrahs here, it saw 11 months in barrel and won’t be released until the fall of 2015. Exhibiting lots of blackberry, black raspberry, graphite, smoke and crushed rock, it’s beautifully concentrated, has top-notch purity of fruit and a great finish. I love its mid-palate density, and while it has a lot of tannins, they’re nicely integrated into the body of the wine. Give it 2-3 years in the cellar and enjoy bottles through 2033. It should be one of the longest-lived Syrahs in the vintage.” WA

It’s power-packed and concentrated with layered dark fruit flavors, with a fine sense of tension between the fruit, acid and tannins. Cellar Selection.” WE

Soos Creek Wine Cellars Ciel du Cheval Vineyard Red, Red Mountain 2012 750ML ($37.95) $33 special, 16 bottles available
Winery note “This beauty is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Cab Franc, and 14% Merlot. Balanced, concentrated and age-worthy. The Ciel du Cheval Vineyard is also recognized as one of the very best vineyards in Washington State for Bordeaux grape varieties. Owned by Jim Holmes and managed by Ryan Johnson, it is in the tiny but highly acclaimed Red Mountain appellation. Long Shadows Chester Kidder Red, Columbia Valley 2011 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 3 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2011 Chester Kidder is a beauty. Coming from a difficult vintage and a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Syrah and 7% Petit Verdot, it spent 30 months in 85% new French oak before being bottled. Inky colored, medium to full-bodied, silky and with fabulous tannin quality, it’s absorbed almost every trace of its oak élevage and offers layers of dark fruits, licorice, chocolate and toasted spice. It has a classic feel and will age effortlessly for another 10-15 years.” JD

L’Ecole No. 41 Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley 2012 750ML ($31.95) $28 special, 9 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 91+ points “(from multiple sources, mostly older vines): Bright medium ruby. Aromas of dark berries, black cherry, black licorice and violet convey a medicinal reserve that reminded me of Petit Verdot but this is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Very plush, dense, sweet dark fruit and violet flavors show a slight youthful roughness. This unevolved wine will need time to absorb its big, chewy tannins.” ST
Figgins Estate Red, Walla Walla Valley 2012 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 4 bottles available
Wine Advocate 96+ points “The Figgins 2012 Estate Red Wine is flat-out knockout stuff. Layered, gorgeously concentrated, full-bodied, and balanced, this Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend gives up sensational notes of cassis, black raspberry toasted bread and sweet spice on the nose. Ultra-pure, elegant and silky, it has the texture to drink nicely today, yet will age effortlessly for two decades or more. Coming from the higher elevation, eastern edge of Walla Walla (1500-1750 feet above sea level), it spent 22 months in 70% new French oak and 30% in once used barrels. This is one of the top Cabernets coming out of Washington and readers should not miss it.”

Case-6 Doubleback Cabernet Sauvignon, Walla Walla Valley 2013 750ML ($619.95) $559 pre-arrival special (that’s only $93.17/bottle!)
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Bright, medium ruby-red. Sexy nutty oak complements ripe cassis, minerals, licorice and herbs on the nose. Wonderfully silky and refined, but with sexy herbal lift to the seamless berry and spice flavors. Very suave, youthful, classy Cabernet with sneaky depth of flavor and noble tannins. Sappy, subtle and long on the aftertaste. I find this wine much easier to taste today than the more backward 2012. Will it go into a shell or will it remain harmonious?” ST

What’s Nouveau, Georges?
Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais
Great Crus, No Nouveau
Instead of going off to college, young Georges Duboeuf helped out at his family’s vineyard. Among his duties was to deliver wines by bicycle to local restaurants, slowly gaining both an awareness of and an appreciation for the wine business. He then began to bottle Beaujolais in order to meet his clients’ demand, ultimately forming an association of 45 local winegrowers called “l’Ecrin Mâconnais-Beaujolais.” This allowed the Beaujolais to gain a foothold within France as well as prepared Duboeuf for his next massive undertaking.
In 1964, Georges created “Les Vins Georges Duboeuf.” Working as a negociant, he began to bottle wines from throughtout the ten crus of Beaujolais. While the United States because increasingly keen on imported wine in the 70’s and 80’s, Duboeuf capitalized on the enthusiasm within France for Beaujolais Nouveau, elevating the event to a global phenomenon. Japan and Australia caught the fever, anticipating the yearly arrival of the vintage’s first offerings.
Aside from being credited for earning Beaujolais worldwide recognition, Duboeuf is known for his wild, colorful labels and for the freshness and exuberance of his affordable wines. Still active within the business, Georges and his son Franck continue the tradition of the region with an assortment of Beaujolais cuvées.
We are pleased to offer a selection of his newest releases, all available here now:

Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2014 Morgon Flower Label, the bottles sporting their “Medaille d’Or Coucours Générale Agricole de Paris” stickers, has a smudged strawberry and blackcurrant-scented nose with a hint of wild hedgerow developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry, an engaging spiciness from the start continuing throughout. This is a linear but energetic Morgon with pleasing cracked pepper notes sprinkled over the aftertaste. This is very fine.” NM

Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2014 Morgon Belles Grives has a more taciturn nose compared to Duboeuf’s other 2014 Morgons, so be patient with it, since it reveals traces of blackcurrant and kirsch with time, all nicely defined but constantly demanding coaxing from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well-balanced and focused, with cracked black pepper enlivening the structured finish. Don’t be afraid to give this a little decanting before pouring.” NM

Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2014 Morgon Domaine Mont Chavy was cropped at 45 hectoliters per hectare this year. It has a precise red cherry and bergamot-scented nose that unfurls in the glass. The palate is juicy and quite dense – thick tannin shrouded in lightly spiced redcurrant and blackcurrant fruit that lead to a sharp, nicely focused finish that demonstrates fine backbone. This is probably the best from Georges Duboeuf this year. Very fine.” NM

Case-12 Georges Duboeuf Domaine des Rosiers Moulin-a-Vent 2014 750ML ($219.95) $179 special, 6 cases available (that’s only $14.92/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 89-91 points “The 2014 Moulin-à-Vent Domaine des Rosiers, which sees a judicious 15% oak barrel aging, has a precocious and lively bouquet of maraschino cherry, cola and mineral scents that are nicely defined and feminine. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fine acidity and harmony with a mineral-driven finish that leaves the mouth tingling. This is just lovely.” NM

Russ Raney Presents:
Corbieres Wines
Cabriac from Russ Raney- Corbieres is an AOC within the Southern French region of the Languedoc-Roussillon: mostly known for its rich and herbal red wines. The Corbieres region produces only small amounts of white and rose wines. The northern portion, known as Alaric, has plains to the north and south-facing slopes along the Montagne d’Alaric. This is an excellent area for Mourvedre as well as other Southern French varietals such as Grenache and Carignan. In the center of the AOC is the Corbieres-Boutenac AOC, created in 2005. Corbieres-Boutenac is recognized for producing high quality wines from the ten communes that surround a limestone ridge covered in garrigue (a term for the scrubland herbs such as rosemary and lavender that is often used to describe aromas found in the wines).
We at Vinopolis are excited to now premier the full breadth of newly-imported selections of two vignerons chosen by the former owner and winemaker of Evesham Wood, Russ Raney. Russ has been a long-time part-time resident in this remarkable region. These wines offer excellent value in a range of genres: some complex yet easy-drinking, some powerful and full-bodied, and others are great cellar candidates.
Russ Raney Reports: “Clos Canos is a small family operation (11,000 cases/year) situated on the edge of the village, Luc-sur-Orbieu – which is within the sub-appellation of Corbières-Boutenac, and more or less in the center of the AOC. The husband-wife owners are Pierre Galinier and Françoise Castel. Pierre is a 5th generation vigneron in Luc. Canos’ wines are also in the ‘good value’ category, but they produce some excellent ageable wines as well, like their ‘Tradition,’ which is 90% old-vine Carignan with loads of character.”

Chateau Cabriac is composed of 70 hectares, with 25 hectares in the Corbieres AOC and 45 hectares considered Vin de Pays. The family was one of the first to introduce Syrah and Mourvedre into the AOC. The micro-climate allows for a slower maturation of the grapes, resulting in balance and intense flavors without over-ripeness.

Russ Raney reports: “Domaine Sainte Croix is the closest of our three Corbières estates to the Mediterranean, but also the highest elevation (located in the “Hautes-Corbières) and only a stone’s throw from both the Fitou and Roussillon apellations. It’s nestled in the little village of Fraïssé des Corbières. The owners are a very affable Brit couple, Jon & Elizabeth Bowen. Despite their relative newcomer status, they have already begun to make waves in their region with some remarkable wines from old vines which Jon researched carefully prior to purchasing. Ste Croix has a special affinity for wines produced from old-vine carignan, and is arguably producing one of the best in that genre for all of the South of France. Their vines & wines are organic and very true-to- type. Jon & Elizabeth are passionate about making authentic wines with complexity and subtlety – and the proof is in the bottle!”
Domaine Sainte Croix Carignan Vieilles Vignes, Languedoc-Roussillon 2007 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 11 bottles available
Russ Raney reports: “Domaine Padié – This is a small producer in the village of Calce in Roussillon, operated by the jovial & earthy Jean-Philippe Padié. Jean-Philippe worked for the nearby and much heralded Domaine Gauby before launching his own venture. And I must say that this likely made his transition much smoother – as he too is garnering a lot of accolades himself now. The domaine owns around 15 hectares of a variety of grapes – but predominantly carignan & grenache for the reds. Both viticulture and wine-making here are focused on bio-dynamic methods. The majority of the soils around the village (as indicated by the name) are clay-limestone or marly limestone, with a few hectares of schiste-based soils. Jean-Philippe seems to have a gift for making powerful wines – red & white – yet with excellent balance & focus – and above all, authenticity & uniqueness.”

Robert Parker 93-95 points “The 2012 Chardonnay Stone Cote Vineyard (a block within the Durell Vineyard planted on gravelly riverbed soils) is 100% barrel-fermented and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Made from a combination of Old Wente clones and some of the newer Chardonnay clones, it exhibits a terrific wet rock/powdered stone-like minerality along with beautiful aromas of exotic fruits (mangoes and tangerines), great intensity, full body, terrific acidity, and 14.8% alcohol. This beautiful Burgundian-styled Chardonnay should be enjoyed over the next 7-8 years.” RP

Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 90 points “(36% new oak): Vivid ruby. Smoky dark berry and olive tapenade scents are lifted by zesty mineral and black pepper notes, with a floral nuance adding complexity. Silky and focused on the palate, offering spice-accented blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that become sweeter with air. The floral quality recurs on the persistent, smoky finish.” ST

Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 89+ points “(at 13.5% alcohol, this is a full degree lower than the Pauline’s Cuvee; includes tiny bits of merlot and petit verdot): Bright red-ruby. Musky black raspberry, blackberry, licorice, menthol and oak on the nose. Distinctly tighter and less pliant now than the Pauline’s Cuvee, displaying a touch of medicinal reserve to the sappy dark berry, violet and menthol flavors. Shows serious spine without coming off as hard: I’d give this persistent cabernet a year or two to mellow in bottle.” ST

Wine Enthusiast 93 points “This Merlot-based blend is a huge success. It’s a big, tannic, tight wine, packed to bursting with black cherry liqueur, cola and spice flavors. Yet it maintains an exciting balance, with the tension between acids, tannins and oak in equilibrium. Seems like it wants 5-6 years in the cellar to let it throw some tannins and mellow.” WE

Robert Parker 95 points “The 2012 Zinfandel Highwire Vineyard, a site that is half head-pruned and half on a high wire trellising system, sees more new French oak (52%). A dense ruby/purple color is followed by a rich, full-bodied wine displaying lots of boysenberry, black raspberry and cherry fruit intermixed with hints of incense and Asian spice. Winery note “A blend of the unique characteristics from several phenomenal vineyards, creating a Cabernet Sauvignon with remarkable balance and consistency. Offering ripe flavors of black plum jam and black currant, this wine is a polished reflection of the excellent 2012 vintage. Hints of toast and a touch of baking spice support the fruit. We selected more than half of the Cabernet grapes for this wine from our own vineyards in Sonoma County, with the balance coming from our longstanding partner growers. The 2012 vintage was slightly warmer than the previous few years, resulting in ripe, dark fruit flavors in our Cabernet. A touch of Petite Sirah lends further dark fruit character and structure to the wine, while a hint of Merlot contributes to a plush mouthfeel.”

The tannins could use another year or two to soften, but the Ranch Cabernet is going to drink well with minimal cellaring next to most wines of the vintage.” AG

Robert Parker 91+ points “The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a blend of 93.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6.5% Cabernet Franc from the estate vineyards on the Silverado Trail, south of Stags Leap. Made in a good structural style with plenty of barrique in the background as well as lots of blackcurrant, licorice, new saddle leather and spice characteristics, this tastes like a Cabernet Sauvignon made by someone of Italian origin. I say that because of its tannic structure and spice. This serious, full-bodied, concentrated 2012 will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age, and should drink well for two decades.” RP
