It’s rare to find benchmark wines that remain affordable from one of a wine-growing region considered one of the finest in the world for centuries, but not impossible. Well, if you’ve read the title of this newsletter, there’s no surprise who we have in mind: G.D. Vajra and the now-sister estate of Luigi Baudana.

G.D. Vajra is responsible for some of the finest Barolos we offer and also excels with their more entry-level options. The lineup as a whole is quite simply the best in Piedmont today. At all price points they are benchmark wines against which all others are judged.

The entry-level wines consist of often unique regional blends and varietal wines.

The Aube: once a sleepy backwater department of the Champagne region where generations of vineyard owners and caretakers subsisted by selling their crops to the luxury Grandes Marques headquartered in Reims. Now it is a cradle to a movement. A movement of estate growers escorting their grapes through to the finished wine, and in so doing expressing their grapes, their ground, and their aesthetic.

The Aube is not alone in this turnabout. It is happening in tiny plots of land all over Champagne.

The late Chris Bilbro is one of California wine’s unsung heroes. He founded Marietta Cellars in 1978 and grew the winery into one of the preeminent producers of excellent value, honestly made California wine. Chris sadly passed away in 2019, and today his son, Scot Bilbro, runs the winery. The lineup is as good as it’s ever been: full of delicious, gutsy wines that over-deliver at all prices (that max out at a mere $40). If these had “Napa” on the label, you wouldn’t blink if these were double the price.

The Marietta wines have been customer favorites at the shop for some time due, from their sub-$20 Zinfandel-based old vine blend (which defined the category for California), all the way up to their sub-$40 Gibson Block Syrah, which hails from a dry-farmed parcel planted in the 1880s.
