Telmo Rodriguez
Remelluri is one of our absolute favorite producers, making wine that embodies the romance and delicacy of Rioja with uncompromising quality. The proprietor Telmo Rodriguez is also a visionary for Spanish wine broadly and has pioneered several successful wineries all over the country in an effort to showcase his country’s rich diversity of wine styles. His energy and respect for tradition is mirrored by the deep history of the Remelluri name.
Remelluri has fascinating estate origins that date over a thousand years to the tenth century. A Basque warrior and count named Erramel from Alava founded a small village on the site (uri in Basque), and overtime the name evolved from Erramel Uri to Remelluri. Monks first produced wine on the property in the 14th century and the monastery was frequently visited by pilgrims for prayer and sanctuary. In the 19th century the property was divided amongst a variety of religious orders throughout the country, and the name Remelluri would wait until 1967 to be restored. It was in this year that Jaime Rodríguez Salís (father of Telmo and Amaia), began to make wine from the ancient vineyards at the heart of the estate, devoting tireless energy to restoring the property to its full potential. In 1971 Remelluri was the first single-vineyard Rioja to be released in modern times, reflecting a departure from mass-produced wines of the area and a renewed emphasis on terroir.
The grapes of Remelluri’s vineyards are some of the last to be harvested in all of Rioja. Why? Because the vineyards are located along the slopes of the Sierra de Toloño mountains above the village of Labastida in Rioja Alavesa. This is the highest elevation in the Rioja region with vines planted between 500 and 950 meters, providing ample freshness and even ripening to the grapes compared to the sub-baked valleys below. This culminates in wines that are immensely elegant and perfumed, with the full richness one expects from Rioja combined with energy and finesse.
The Lindes de Remelluri wines are a targeted expansion of the estate in the effort of featuring distinct terroirs of the broader region: Labastida, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Ábalos, Peciña, Rivas de Tereso, and Salinillas de Buradón. Remelluri has therefore become a unique window into the complexion and taste of Rioja, offering consumers unparalleled access to understand the region intimately in the glass. This is one of the reasons’s we’re so excited about offering these wines, as we feel that Vinopolis customers deserve the chance to know a classic region as richly as possible. We hope you won’t miss this chance to bring Rioja to your table in more ways than one this holiday season.
“Telmo Rodriguez, one of the most iconic and best winemakers of his generation…. has accomplished himself as a champion of terroir over varietal and employs artisan craftsmanship in the cellar, with his wines hardly ever showing overt oak or aggressive alcohol, they always show distinctive purity and a sense of place.” -Kerry Winslow, Grapelive

In Stock and On Sale Now from Remelluri: Remelluri Rioja Blanco, Rioja DOCa 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $119 special, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 97 points “The 2021 Blanco is a blend of varieties and places and is the first wine that expresses the special character of the Remelluri property. They used different vinification methods (concrete, foudre, barrique, all with indigenous yeasts), and the backbone here is the origin and not the process. It’s not a shy white, showing power (14.14% alcohol) and the freshness of the altitude (605 to 805 meters above sea level) with a low pH (3.24). It comes from vines planted between 1989 and 2012 and is worked organically and biodynamically, with cover crops and horses. It has ripeness, notes of pollen and yellow fruit and a touch of smoke and spice, with a very balanced palate and great purity. It follows the path of elegance and freshness of the 2020, but it was a cooler and healthier vintage (in 2020, they had hail twice), and the wine shows more precision and finishes very clean. Pablo Eguzkiza compared it to 2016. 12,930 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023.” Remelluri Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Ábalos 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $36 special, that’s $34.20 at 5% off and $32.40 at 10% off, 14 bottles available Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93+ points “The serious and austere new 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Ábalos was produced with grapes on marl and limestone from the Marqués de Legarda, who is mentioned on the label. It’s a blend of 73% Tempranillo, 17% Graciano, 6% Garnacha and 4% other varieties, presented in a straight Bordeaux bottle. It reflects more the character of Haro than the Rioja Alavesa, wines with more Graciano. It’s medium to full-bodied with 14.17% alcohol and has fine-grained, chalky tannins. 13,205 bottles were filled in May 2022.” Remelluri Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Peciña, Rioja DOCa 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $36 special, that’s $34.20 at 5% off and $32.40 at 10% off, 15 bottles availableLuis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points “The perfumed and floral 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Peciña is the smallest cuvée from a narrow amphitheater in the parish of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. It’s a blend of Tempranillo with 25% Garnacha and therefore presented in a Burgundian bottle, reflecting the high percentage of Garnacha. It has notes of Mediterranean herbs, some coolness from the high altitude of the vineyards and some austerity in the tannins. 7,149 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022.” Remelluri Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Rivas de Tereso 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $36 special, that’s $34.20 at 5% off and $32.40 at 10% off, 19 bottles available Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93+ points “Rivas de Tereso are parishes of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, but the difference with the 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Rivas de Tereso is that the vineyards are at higher altitude and the percentage of Garnacha is much higher here (38%), so there’s more mountain character and more herbal notes in the wine. It has 57% Tempranillo and some 5% other varieties. Despite a moderate 13.95% alcohol, the nose shows good ripeness, and there is some wilderness here, perhaps a little more rusticity too. The soils are very stony and rich in limestone, and the altitude gives the wine an austere twist. 19,742 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022.” Remelluri Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Salinillas de Buradón 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $39 special, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 24 bottles availableLuis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Salinillas de Buradón, a parish of Labastida, was produced with a blend of 91% Tempranillo, 4% Garnacha and 5% other varieties from south-facing vineyards behind the Sierra de la Cantabria, the last vineyards that they recovered on quartz salt, gypsum and red clay soils. These are the last grapes to be picked, and the wine has 14.22% alcohol but doesn’t show any heat. It comes through as serious, shy and austere, a little closed at first. The tannins are a little rustic, but the wine has a strong mineral streak that made it my favorite from the lot. 20,114 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022.” Remelluri ‘Remelluri’ Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $44.50 special, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.05 at 10% off, 36+ bottles availableLuis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93+ points “The estate red 2016 Reserva comes from a late growing season and was produced with local varieties like Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and others from their 86 hectares of vineyards at 590 to 805 meters in altitude on limestone, sandstone and marl soils. The grapes were picked late with good ripeness and health and fermented with natural yeasts in stainless steel and open-top oak vats and then matured in oak containers of different sizes for 20 to 21 months. These are more classical wines, with a more evolved nose, with high ripeness and some balsamic and medicinal notes. It has a dusty palate with Nebbiolo-like tannins. 300,000 bottles and 8,200 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2019.” Remelluri ‘Remelluri’ Gran Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2015 750ml Displayed Price: $119 special, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.05 at 10% off, 12 bottles availableLuis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 95 points “A blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano, the 2012 Granja Remelluri Gran Reserva represents what they are aiming for with this wine, a classical expression of the place, the quintessence of the vineyards. The select their oldest vineyards and age the wine for a long time, coming back to those early years of a modern Rioja that has now turned into a classic. It has some dusty tannins, with good grip and length. It was bottled in 24,238 bottles after an élevage of 26 months. It has been in bottle since May 2015.” Remelluri Lindes de Remelluri Mixed Village Six-Pack 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $219 special, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 3 six-packs in stock nowSix pack contains a limited-edition booklet and one 750ml bottle of each of the following, no substitutions 1 x Vinedos de Salinillas de Buradon 2020 1 x Vinedos de Pecina 2020 1 x Vinedos de Labastida 2020 1 x Vinedos de Abalos 2020 1 x Vinedos de Rivas de Teres, 2020 1 x Vinedos de San Vicente de la Sonsierra 2020
