The sheer joyfulness and summertime vibe captured in a glass of Provençal can easily charm us into forgetting the seriousness and history of the region. For nearly 3,000 years, Provence has been a winemaking region. These fragrant lands have been planted to vines since before the Roman Empire, heck since before even the Roman Republic was established.
So, what has captivated the palates of 26 centuries of wine drinkers? Why do we still care year after year after year after year? What siren’s song draws wine makers and drinkers from around the globe just to make, of all things, rosé?
Could it be the affordability? Much like in Oregon, great bottles rarely top $100 and the vast majority still haven’t breached the $30 mark. Could it be the grape varieties? Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and the indigenous Tibouren seem to blossom with energy when made pink. Could it be the land itself? Those untamed fields of scrubby garrigue end in jaw-dropping cliffs that overlook the azure sea.
Is it the occasion, the evocation of vacation, the call to grill and chill? Is it the paradox of ephemeral wines from forever vineyards that turns us to these flights of fancy? Maybe, after 2,600 years, these Provençal vines have simply learned to speak to us through our senses. They implore us to slow down. And it’s a call we want to hear, inciting us to just relax in the pleasure of time with friends and family.

Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 91-93 points “Not bottled yet at the time of my spring visit to the region, the 2021 Bandol Rose nevertheless showed exceptional promise in my blind tasting. A blend of 80% Mourvèdre and 20% Cinsault, it’s a coppery flamingo-pink in color, with more extraction and tannin than your typical Bandol rosé. It’s round and ripe on the palate, medium to full-bodied, with cherry and lime notes and a long, softly dusty finish. The 2020 version, tried at the estate, is still going strong and might be even a little bit better. Don’t skip it just because it’s not called out on this list.”
