“Luca Sanjust of Fattoria Petrolo has long been working with extended skin macerations, amphorae and a non-interventionist’s approach. He is a historian of local wine culture and ampelography. Indeed, he is one of the most vocal proponents of the recently established Val d’Arno di Sopra appellation. These are the best new releases I have yet tasted from Petrolo.” –Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
In 2011, Italy approved one of Tuscany’s newest appellations: the Val d’Arno di Sopra (also written as Valdarno di Sopra). The quality of the region has been known for centuries: in 1715, a Medici duke decreed it one of only four regions notable for its high quality wine grapes.
Petrolo is the most notable producer of these wines, drawing inspiration from ancient traditions of their regions and their belief that great wine is “nature as dreamed by man.” Petrolo’s wines provide a wonderful introduction to this undervalued corner of Tuscany due to both their quality, but also thanks to their forward-thinking. Their impressive single-vineyard wine, Bòggina, the wine and the name of the vineyard planted in 1952, is 100% Sangiovese. Not only do they produce classic bottlings, like the Bòggina C, but they also defy convention by fermenting wines from the vineyard in a variety of different ways. The goal is to show off the inherent quality of the terroir as a through-line between the different bottlings.
At the top of the line is their Galatrona, a glorious, single-vineyard Merlot that receives head-turning praise vintage after vintage and is frequently lauded as one of Italy’s finest. To be a great wine, the Galatrona must, to quote owner and winemaker Luca “must talk the language of the piece of land it came from. Beyond being mainly good, it has to be a classic in its own way, it must hold the stories of the people who made it, thought it and who have lived and worked for generations over that parcel of land.”
Sanjust is the reason Petrolo turned towards making terroir-driven wines and eventually converting to sustainable farming. Originally a painter, he took over his family’s estate in 1993 and worked to elevate the once watery, boring reds into masterpieces.
His efforts have been long-admired by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate, Bruce Sanderson of the Wine Spectator, James Suckling, and multiple reviewers at Decanter, Falstaff, the Wine Enthusiast, just to name a few, where the Galatrona frequently scores 96-100 points across the board. But don’t expect a high cost to entry, unlike Petrus, which is it often compared to, the Galatrona rarely exceeds $100 on the shelf, at least here.
Their soulful wines capture the artistry and history of the region. You can experience the enchanting poetry of the place at a discount during our three-day sale!

Petrolo Torrione, Val d’Arno di Sopra 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $28, that’s $26.60 at 5% off and $25.20 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
James Suckling 95 points “Very perfumed with sweet-berry and fresh-flower aromas that already show brightness and beauty. Perfumed. Full-bodied with very well-integrated tannins and pure, vivid fruit at the finish. This is all in finesse and depth. Drinkable now, but better in a couple of years.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 93 points “The Petrolo 2019 Torrione is Sangiovese with with smaller parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This is a terrific wine with an exciting delivery of fresh and bold fruit that recalls pressed cherry and wild plum. One of the main features of the 2019 vintage is that standout concentration. The wine delivers good texture and richness, yet the intensity is well played and contained. A lingering note of sweetness that I also notice on Petrolo’s other 2019 releases is present here.”
“There are plenty of highlights in this set of [2014] releases from Petrolo. Proprietor Luca Sanjust seems to be going for a fresher style in his wines today…” — Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Petrolo Bòggina Anfora, Val d’Arno di Sopra 2014 750ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points “It’s interesting to taste the 2014 Bòggina Anfora (Bògginanfora), Petrolo’s Sangiovese done in amphora next to the same wine aged in oak. The amphora wine is initially a bit softer and creamier in its contours, but it also offers less development in the glass. Lavender, plum, menthol, sage and sweet herbs lead into the expressive finish. This is another very pretty wine from Petrolo and proprietor Luca Sanjust.”
Petrolo Bòggina, Val d’Arno di Sopra 2014 750ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points “The 2014 Bòggina is stunning. Although a touch compact in this vintage, the Bòggina impresses for its energy and overall freshness. Red cherry, raspberry, rose petal, tobacco and savory herbs are some of the many notes that continue to open up as the wine takes shape in the glass. It will be interesting to see if the 2014 puts on more weight with time in bottle. It certainly improved over the time I followed it.”
James Suckling 93 points “Very fine and silky with a tight and polished texture that shows wonderful length and definition. Medium body, pretty cherry and citrus character and a long and subtle finish. Well done for a difficult vintage. Delicious now.”
Petrolo Bòggina C, Val d’Arno di Sopra 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “The 2018 Bòggina C (Bòggina Classico) is another superb wine from Petrolo. Here, Sangiovese is aged in oak, which gives the wine more mid-palate depth and broader shoulders, which, frankly, the wine seems to benefit from. Dark cherry, licorice, leather, spice and menthol build as the 2018 shows everything its got. Impressive.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points “From old-vine (and organic) Sangiovese planted in 1952, the Petrolo 2018 Val d’Arno di Sopra Bòggina C is a gorgeous wine with thick flavors and dark saturation. Some 5,053 bottles and larger-format bottles were produced. This is a beautiful expression—polished, bright and intense. It offers pure fruit flavors of wild cherry, cassis, dried basil, crushed flower and candied orange skin. The wine is silky and mid-weight in texture, but it produces a very long and polished finish. This wine hits all the proverbial Sangiovese high notes.”
“Luca Sanjust turned out a gorgeous set of wines at Petrolo [in the 2019 vintage]. This year, I especially like the Sangiovese Boggina, which is one of the best wines I have ever tasted here. The flagship Merlot Galatrona is not too far behind. There is a feeling of purity in the wines today that it so appealing…” — Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Petrolo Bòggina C, Val d’Arno di Sopra Riserva 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 31 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 97 points “The 2019 Sangiovese Vigna Boggina is fabulous. Bright, gracious and light on its feet, the 2019 oozes class. Crushed red berry fruit, white flowers, mint and orange peel are some of the notes that grace this wonderfully translucent Sangiovese from Petrolo. The 2019 is one of the best wines I have ever tasted here.”
Petrolo Galatrona, Val d’Arno di Sopra 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 24 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 98 points “Blackberries and black cherries with lavender and violets on the nose. Full-bodied with velvety, chewy tannins, yet the fruit is very intense with vibrancy and energy. Muscular, yet agile. Pure and poised. A unique definition of merlot in Tuscany. Drink after 2025.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97 points “Made with organic Merlot grapes, the Petrolo 2019 Galatrona is soft and luscious, spreading evenly over the palate with elegance and sweeping intensity. The bouquet shows dark fruit, black cherry and sweet prune. Those dark fruit tones are woven into pretty layers of spice, leather and perfumed tobacco. I like the tight, compact, yet fundamentally rich quality that is part of the mouthfeel in this important vintage. This wine could be considered a bit lighter and more ethereal compared to recent past releases, but I found that all the wines in this batch of new releases go in this same direction.”
Wine Spectator 97 points “A deep well of blackberry, black plum and chocolate marks this monumental red. There is austerity, but also great concentration of fruit, mineral and wild herbs, with great energy and plenty in reserve. Tasted non-blind. Best from 2025 through 2047. 1,600 cases made.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points “The 2019 Galatrona is a gorgeous wine. It possesses striking depth, but with the freshness and delineation that is a signature these days. Blue/purple fruit, mocha, incense, espresso and lavender build in this potent, pure Merlot from the hills. The 2019 is one of the better recent vintages I can remember tasting.”
Petrolo Galatrona, Val d’Arno di Sopra 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 24 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 98 points “The 2020 Galatrona is stunning. In fact, the 2020 is one of the best vintages of the Galatrona I can remember tasting. I am especially impressed by its vertical intensity and explosive energy. All the elements are so impeccably woven together. Dark-toned fruit, crushed rocks, menthol, licorice and spice build into the intense, palate-staining finish. The 2018 spent 18-20 months in French oak, about 25% new, with some larger barrels thrown into the mix. Magnificent.”
James Suckling 97 points “Subtle yet intense aromas of black fruit and violets. Extremely perfumed. Crushed stones. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that give a mouth-feel of velvet that goes on for minutes. Refined and fresh. Al-dente fruit. From organically grown grapes. Better in three to four years.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 points “The Petrolo 2020 Galatrona is a pure expression of organic Merlot and the estate’s headline wine. It was first created in 1994 when Luca Sanjust’s second child, Lucia, was born. Despite the summer heat that became a challenge for winemakers in many corners of Tuscany, Galatrona shows terrific results in 2020. The vineyard is located in a cool and thickly forested position almost exactly between Florence, Arezzo and Siena. The vintage has a classic quality with a subtle bouquet that grows in intensity as the wine opens in the glass. Aromas of cherry, toasted almond and dried mint fuel a long and very elegant finish. The oak tannins are soft and sweet, and the wine boasts long-lasting flavors.”
