Peter Lauer: Satisfying Saar Sale 9-10-24

“This is the Saar and Florian Lauer is currently one of the greatest winemakers in this sacred place… Employing natural-yeast fermentations, Lauer’s wines find their own balance. They tend to be more textural, deeper and more masculine. They have a preternatural sense of balance, an energy that is singular.
“Yet the hallmarks of the Saar are there: purity, precision, rigor, mineral.” – Vom Boden

Peter Lauer: Electric Riesling

Your Three-Day Discount Starts Now

Lauer makes some of the most singular, brilliant wines in the world. His wines have all the raciness, tension and electricity of standard Mosel Riesling compressed into an explosive intensity. It’s as though his wines are diamonds—beautiful, complex and dazzling, but with an incomparable density and infinitely edge.

Lauer is based in the Saar, which is the colder, windier cousin of the Mosel. It also has one of the smallest production footprints compared to the other sub-areas. This is due to the exposure to the frigid east winds that cause precipitous temperature drops as the sun sets. But when once there was a struggle to harvest, climate change has brought balance and intensity. When once the wines were ferociously acidic, the high acidities are balanced with delicate stone fruit notes, deep minerality, and plenty of aging potential regardless of the sweetness level at bottling, such as the filigreed wines of Peter Lauer.

If aren’t familiar with the Lauer wines, you owe it to yourself to try them. All of the featured wines come from the Ayler Kupp vineyard, which is located in the Saar Valley near the Mosel.  The wines are fermented down as far as the wine naturally will go. Most are dry single-parcel wines that carry the name of the specific part of the vineyard on them. They also craft Kabinetts, Spätlesen, and Auslesen wines, though with less residual sugar than modern standards. The results are glorious examples of what Saar can offer: diamond-like intensity, beauty, rarity, and precision at rock-bottom pricing.

The wine proves nicely playful and zesty on the off-dry tasting palate and leaves a juicy feel of minerals and spices in the finish. This is a very nice off-dry Saar Riesling to enjoy over the coming years. Now-2028.” -Mosel Fine Wines

“The 2022er Neuenberg N°17, as it is referred to in the central part of the label, is a barely off-dry wine (with 12 g/l of residual sugar) made from fruit picked in this prime Lieu-Dit forming the south-southwest facing, central part of the original Kupp hill (at the foot of the hill). It offers a very aromatic and rich nose of William’s pear, smoke, anise, thyme, violet, lime tree, and cherry. The wine is both juicy but also directly zesty and spicy, with a touch of tartness and earthy spices. There is good presence and structure and the finish proves intense and broad. It is a great barely off-dry Riesling, which needs a few years to reveal its facets. It even has some upside potential with time. 2025-2034.”

“The 2023 Unterstenberg N°12, as it is referred to in the central part of the label, is a dry wine (with 8 g/l of residual sugar) made from fruit picked in the similarly named prime Lieu-Dit forming the south-southwest facing, front part of the original Kupp hill (at the foot of the hill). This bright hay-yellow-colored wine offers a very attractive nose made of pear, creamy elements, spices, grapefruit puree, white flowers, and smoke. It is nicely playful on the subtly creamy palate and leaves a smooth feel of herbs and minerals in the finish. The aftertaste develops more cut. Despite being open, we feel that this wine will benefit from a few years of bottle aging to integrate its elements and develop more cut. It could then warrant a higher rating. 2028-2038.”

Vom Boden Importer Note
“As noted with Fass 25, yet more revelations of climate change, the “1er Cru” Scheidterberg and Sonnenberg hills that curl around the village of Ayl are beginning to turn out wines of real depth and complexity, yet they also still flaunt a bit of their even-more-cool-climate thing. Think of it as “Barrel X” with more punch and guts.”

It reveals a fully aromatic and appealing nose of yellow fruits (pineapple, Conference pear, and quince), candied grapefruit, tangerine, green apple, anise, oriental spices, and smoke. The wine proves fully off-dry on the palate as plenty of sweet and ripe fruits come through. The finish is structured and has more mineral elements with zesty and minty elements. This beautiful fully off-dry Riesling needs a few years to fully deliver. 2027-2042.”

This hay-yellow-colored wine offers a rather subtle and very complex nose made of earthy spices, pear, apricot blossom, a hint of date, cream, and smoke. It proves very subtle and elegant on the palate, where a touch of zest brings the right kick to the complex creamy and fruity flavors. This offers a still very primary yet superbly complex and layered nose of bakery elements, almond cream, candied pineapple, coconut cream, aniseed, smoky bacon, and yellow flowers. The wine is superbly smooth and sweet on the comparatively light-weighted and delicate palate.
