Introducing Quinta da Muradella:

Obscure Yet Highly Rated Spanish Wines

Tucked within remote mountains in the Spanish region of Galicia is the emerging appellation of Monterrei. If there is one name to know, it is José Luis Mateo. Mateo founded his winery, Quinta da Muradella, in 1990, working with ancient vines and obscure varieties from his father’s parcel and neighbors. By 1999, he had purchased his own vineyard, from which he now crafts the “Muradella,” a single-vineyard eponymous wine.

Inspired by Raúl Pérez, Mateo works organically with the goal of achieving balance in the wines to best express the rugged terroirs. You’ll not find new oak or high ABVs here; these are fresh wines with energy and uniqueness.

Generations of Excellence: The Wines of Domaine Hubert Lignier

Generations of Excellence:

The Wines of Domaine Hubert Lignier.

“We aspire to make authentic and sensual wines that express their own terroir.” -Laurent Lignier

What is it that sets apart the wines of Domaine Lignier?

In the 1880s, when the Phylloxera blight was destroying vineyards across France, Jacques Lignier, a viticulturist from Morey-St-Denis, saw opportunity. He purchased a neglected, run-down estate – a bargain thanks to the blight—and with his sons by his side, Jacques started the long process of restoring these desiccated vines to life.

With Generations of hard work, they expanded, acquiring prized plots in Gevrey-Chambertin, Pommard, and Nuit St Georges. Finally, under the leadership of Hubert Lignier, the Domaine blossomed.

“While the ship has long since sailed with regards to getting on the mailing list, these are singular wines well worth the effort to track down on the secondary market… As I’ve said numerous times, Christophe Baron and assistant winemaker Elizabeth Bourcier produce some of the most singular and impressive wines out there.” —Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate

It’s no secret that we’ve long adored the wines from Christophe Baron.

Founded in 1897 by Luigi Einaudi, this is a deeply historic estate. Einaudi rose to fame as a politician, eventually becoming the first democratically elected President of the Republic of Italy in 1948. He purchased the estate while working as a university professor and never missed a harvest regardless of what titles he held. He sold his grapes at first, waiting nearly twenty years before building a winery.

Today, the estate is still highly respected. It owns over 60 hectares of vines spread across twelve properties. Although the bulk of production are Dogliani Dolcettos, the Barolos are where the craft winemaking shines.

Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 93 Points “The 2021 Christo is a blend of 68% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 8% Petite Sirah and 4% Viognier. The nose features fresh blackcurrant and blueberry aromas with tones of cast iron, violet, sagebrush and conifer. The full-bodied palate is chalky and refreshing with restrained, mineral-driven fruit and a long, perfumed finish. Give it 2-3 years in bottle or a couple hours in a decanter.”
STAFF PICK  Hannah “This wine is packed with French grape varietals, made by a classic California producer.
