“…The 2019 Riservas show a good amount of vineyard definition, but they are also marked by a strong, somber, brooding quality… I imagine the 2019s will require a measure of patience.” –Antonio Galloni, Vinous

“[Produttori del Barbaresco is] one of the most important and quality-minded co-operatives in the world…” –Jeb Dunnuck

“I’ve written this many times before, but it bears repeating: Produttori del Barbaresco is one of Italy’s ultimate values for your money.” –Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Produttori del Barbaresco is revered for producing classically-styled Barbaresco and Riservas of uncompromising quality and transparency. You’d be hard-pressed to find such consistent quality and complexity out of such an extensive range of single-vineyard Nebbiolos anywhere else.

Nikolaihof is a giant of Austrian wine—a producer whose history and quality are unrivaled even in a country full of great producers. As Austria’s oldest operating winery, that history dates back to Roman times. Records first note winemaking occurring at the estate in 470, and the Saahs family has run the property for well over a century.

Much like how estates operated in previous centuries, Nikolaihof is farmed under polyculture, producing everything from honey to cut flowers in addition to wine. It was the first winery in the world to fully convert to farming biodynamically, having done so in the 1970s, a surprisingly easy task as no modern farming chemicals have touched the estate’s vines.

Boulay 3 Day Sale! 5-26-24

We’ll get to Boulay, but first…..a few thoughts on Sancerre

It’s my belief that we’re witnessing a return to glory for the region of Sancerre. Not that the prestige ever quite went away, but wine drinking society certainly turned its back for a bit on what they perceived to be a region and a style that was almost too classic, too well understood. Part of the problem was that Sancerre experienced a major jump in production following the 90s and early 2000s that wasn’t always backed by top quality juice in the bottle. At its best, this region shows a wonderfully complex side of sauvignon blanc that no other place can. That steely lemon and grapefruit citrus, delicate white flowers, and subtle smoky aromas of gunflint.

Despite being one of the smallest growing regions in Germany, the Nahe is one of the most compelling. Combining the heft of the Rheingau with the elegance and minerality of the Mosel, the region offers something no other can boast: winemakers Helmut and Cornelius Dönnhoff. That’s a lot of faith we hoist on the shoulders of this family, but anyone who knows the wines knows that it is well deserved.

Dönnhoff is one of our favorite German producers, and one we stock by the pallet-load. They excel with both dry and off-dry wines, producing some of the highest rated and most enthusiastically praised Rieslings in nearly every vintage. Their privileged location in the Nahe, includes some of the finest and most geologically diverse vineyards in all of Germany.

Alberto Nanclares y Prieto.

Some of the world’s greatest investments are happy accidents… just ask winery owner Alberto Nanclares. An economist who loved the sea, he moved with his wife to Castrelo, a small town near Spain’s Atlantic Coast, and began to take an interest in the Albarino vines planted on his new property. Interest turned to love which turned to obsession and in 1997 he decided to found his own winery.

While he began as a garagiste, his production expanded over time and he eventually hired his friend Silvia Prieto, a technician and enologist as a consultant, but she soon became an equal partner in the operation.
