Gerard Boulay makes some of the best aromatic white wines in France from his vineyards in Chavignol.  This town is the true beating heart of Sancerre and home to top names in the region (including Vatan, Cotat, and Boulay). From his parcels in La Grande Côte, Monts Damnés, and Clos Beaujeu, all of his wines ring with terroir and the unique minerality.

Pierre Bouree et Fils might not be a household name in the USA, but it is one of the many historic producers headquartered in the venerable village of Gevrey-Chambertin. The estate dates back to the mid-19th century. More recently, Pierre Bouree has grown its profile through shrewd purchases, including the acquisition of Clos de la Justice (a monopole), as well as a small plot within the Premier Cru vineyard Les Champeaux.
 
Pierre Bouree at VinopolisCurrently run by Brothers Bernard and Jean-Christophe Vallet, intervention in the vineyard is limited to pruning in the spring and organic compost for fertilizer. Just like their cult neighbor Domaine Dujac, the reds are vinified entirely with whole clusters in foudre and raised in oak for two years.

With a history that winds all the way back to 1708, it’s obvious that the current owners, Georg and Julia Kruger-Rumpf, don’t need an enormous marketing budget to sell these wines. They move off the shelves based on word of mouth and brand loyalty.
 
Known for their balance, minerality, and aging potential, Kruger-Rumpf wines showcase the unique terroir of the Nahe region.

We love how excited sommeliers and Austrian wine fans get when they see our selections. Outside of liter bottles of lightly sparkling GVs (which are delicious), there’s not a lot of serious Austrian wines that make it to American shelves.

That’s why it seems shocking to point out that Austrian winemakers produce some of the greatest wines made anywhere in the world. They count among their ranks such luminaries as FX Pichler, Gobelsburg, Nikolaihof, and Brundlmayer.
 
Despite the love of diehard fans, the wines don’t receive the attention they deserve. Were these from France, these biodynamic, single-vineyard, Grand Cru, food-friendly, cellar-worthy, and ridiculously underpriced gems from thousand-year-old wineries would be three times as expensive. These are the best value in luxury whites in the world.

For the last few Sundays we’re gone deep into the Vinopolis Cellar to bring you great discounted prices of amazing Bordeaux wines. What people don’t know is that Bordeaux produces almost 900 million bottles of wine annually, a quantity that dwarfs any other fine wine growing region in the world. The region is far more complex, rich with winemaking diversity, and value driven than consumers realize.  As we’ve put these wines on sale it’s become clear how much more Bordeaux we should all be drinking given the immense quality that persists across all price bands and appellations in the region.

This week we’re continuing by featuring wines that reside outside the typical bounds of the “Left and Right Banks”.
