Brad McLeroy had a dream but he also had a problem. While he and his wife owned a popular wine shop, what he really wanted was to be a winemaker. Unfortunately, their wine shop was in Kansas City… far from any wine regions of note. So they sold their business and moved west and moved out to the Willamette Valley. Brad got a job at working with Veronique Drouhin, one of the greatest winemakers in the world, and six years later opened his own winery.

While they may not receive the level of attention that some Oregon wineries get, they are beloved by industry vets and wine geeks alike. Coupled with their pure and transportative style, these wines are delicious and are truly fantastic values

Small producers such as Arnot-Roberts are the pioneers of the “New California” movement. Started by childhood friends Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts in 2001, they’ve quickly established themselves as some of the best producers of restrained and elegant small-parcel wines. In 2013 the San Francisco Chronicle named them “Winemakers of the Year” in recognition of the quality and consistency of the wines they’re producing, and they’ve racked up professional accolades ever since.

So, what is the “New California” movement? Started more or less around the beginning of the century, it rejects industrialized, oaky, plush, and sweetened wines with no sense of place.

Gold from Gobelsburg Sale 1-19-25

Schloss Gobelsburg - gobelsburg.at

Schloss Gobelsburg is a winery that represents tradition as well as modernity. This historic winery is nestled in the picturesque Kamptal region of Austria, and boasts a heritage that dates back to the late 12th century. Originally established as a Cistercian monastery, the estate gained new leadership In 1996 when Michael Moosbrugger became winemaker in a fascinating turn of events that matched a monk in need with a passionate young wine enthusiast.

Moosbrugger was an acquaintance of Willi Brundlmayer (an estate you must seek out within out inventory) and has asked him to keep an eye out for any suitable estate or wine projects which might be willing to take him on. Well, Willi had gotten in contact with Father Bertrand, the lead proprietor at the Gobelsburg estate and a late December 1995 phone call got the ball rolling.

In 1985, Erich and Marita Weber began restoring the decaying Falksteinerhof winery in the Saar valley of Tälchen. Today, now joined in their work by their son Johannes, they craft some of the most soulful and quietly complex Riesling from their ancient vines.

The Webers personally work their vines by hand using organic methods, deviating only by avoiding the use of copper, as it is a toxic heavy metal. They do not use herbicides or fertilizers and avoid tilling for the most part. Yields are kept very low, naturally due to the vines’ ages and through pruning down to one flat cane per vine.

Some of their prize vineyard holdings include Niedermenniger Herrenberg, from which they source their Pinot Noir for their Spätburguner rosé and the Weissburgunder for their extraordinary Pet-Nat, Niedermenniger Sonnenberg, Krettnacher Altenberg, and Krettnacher Euchariusberg, home to some of their oldest vines.

“Here is one of the hidden gems among La Morra Barolo producers. Nicola Oberto, an energetic, affable vintner, manages this winery, situated on the road amidst the Rocche dell’Annunizata and Torriglione vineyards in Annunziata […] If you want a clear representation of what a Rocche dell’Annunziata Barolo is all about, the offering from Trediberri is a wine you need to seek out.” -Tom Hyland, Forbes

Rare Wine Co. “Berri, is the westernmost MGA in the entire Barolo appellation, and the soils are younger than those in La Morra’s better-known eastern crus.
