Year in, year out, few producers worldwide can claim to have the quality and consistency of Fèlsina. The flagship Chianti Classico Riserva is consistently one of the greatest values in Tuscany. It’s cellar-worthy, though delicious out of the gate with dense tannins and fruit. The 100% Sangiovese Fontalloro is a Brunello-drinker’s dream, with explosive aromatics and lots of power to back it up.

The top Chianti Classico Riserva of the estate, the Rancia, is an exceptional single-vineyard wine. Felsina rehabilitated the site and cloned the best vines throughout the vineyard, eventually spreading them throughout their other holdings. The dominant soil type of the vineyard is albarese, a type of limestone-infused sandstone that’s famous for the aromatic punch it contributes to the wine.

Vouvray: one of the world’s most complex, age-worthy, terroir-driven, aromatically intense, and praised white wines. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more wildly expressive and flexible grape than the Chenin Blanc that composes practically all white wines from Vouvray. Chenin from Vouvray is esteemed for its profundity at all sweetness levels, from bone-dry (Sec), lightly- to medium-sweet (Demi-Sec), and dessert style (Moelleux and above).

Granted AOC status in 1936, this commune in the Loire Valley is home to a landmark estate that has endured since those early days, producing wonderful and empirically age-worthy wines not to be overlooked: Domaine Huet.

A pioneer in biodynamic viticulture, Domaine Huet is the most sought-after Vouvray producer. Today, horses still plough between the rows of their three vineyards, considered some of the greatest terroir in all of the Loire.

Bedrock calls itself a “mission-driven” winery dedicated to the preservation and rehabilitation of old vineyards all around California. These vineyards, they say are “living pieces of history.” Although their beginnings in 2007 were humble, owners Morgan Twain-Peterson and Chris Cottrell have remained focused on coaxing high-quality terroir driven wines from their eclectic vineyards ever since.

“Enrico Scavino, of the celebrated Paolo Scavino winery, was among an elite group of winemakers who would later become known as the “Barolo Boys.” This tight-knit group of visionaries raised the bar on quality by incorporating techniques from outside the Langhe (such as the use of barrique and rotofermenters). They traveled far and wide across the great wine regions of the world, and the information they brought back home would contribute to the rise of Barolo as one of the world’s most coveted wines.” -Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Scavino is one of the truly great estates in Barolo, a region with no shortage of famous names. Despite a recent trend towards a more traditional approach, the wines still skew modernist.

Étienne de Montille of Domaine de Montille, one of the preeminent names in Burgundy, sought out land on the West Coast of America to craft Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. He approached the new project with a Burgundian sensibility, so it was only natural that he focused on the Santa Rita Hills in Santa Barbara County. It’s a region that seems to pull at French hearts, as it did with the late Philippe Cambie and his joint project with Adam Lee of Siduri, named Beau Marchais.

And draw even more French folk, it did. Étienne shared the news with his friend Rodolphe Péters of Champagne’s top-class grower estate, Pierre Péters, who quickly signed on and became the sparkling wine consultant for the project.
