New Zealand (also commonly referred to by its Māori name of Aotearoa) is one of the wine world’s most exciting regions. Once turned to nearly exclusively for zippy and pungent Sauvignon Blancs, the options and quality has exploded in the past few years.
The results are reminiscent of Oregon: you’ll find plenty of Burgundian grapes and inspiration, cool-climate versions of bolder reds like Syrah, and even a burgeoning natural wine scene. Plus, the pricing is on par with our WV favorites. So, step outside your comfort zone and explore these up-and-coming options before the pricing catches up!

We offer thirteen New Zealand options in-stock and on sale now, including:
Kumeu River:
One of the estates leading the charge is Kumeu River. Much of what we think of as standard winemaking practice in the country is really thanks to their efforts. They led on growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, pioneered the use of indigenous yeasts, and also pioneered the use of screwcaps.
The estate began as a dream brought to fruition by decades of hard work by the entire family. In the 1980s when Michael Brajkovich, the current winemaker and Maté’s son, began touring the wineries of Bordeaux and Burgundy that the family turned their focus on international varieties. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir took root, and today, their wines are international superstars. These are benchmarks for the region – a look at NZ terroir through the classic Burgundy lens.
Kumeu River Coddington Chardonnay, Kumeu 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $53.50, that’s $50.83 at 5% off and $48.15 at 10% off, 2 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 97 points “Sliced apple, apple, sea shell and crushed stone aromas follow through to a full body yet it’s tight and structured with an impressive fruit, acidic and phenolic balance giving it focus and intensity. Drinkable but better in a few years. Screw cap.”
Erin Larken-Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2022 Coddington Chardonnay leads with lemon balm/oil, green-olive brine, crème brûlée top (a.k.a. scorched brown sugar), peach fuzz, and an abundance of orchard fruit. In the mouth, kiwi fruit acidity (a.k.a. juicy, sweet, tart) defines the perimeters of the flavors and beckons you in for another, closer look. It’s very, very good, a distinct wine, pure, all aspects delineated and deliberate. I like this. It feels orderly and mathematical. If the wine had a sound, it would be a straight-pace bowl at the wickets, one flying out of stumps (name a better sound, I’ll wait). It’s not that immediately obvious, though; it builds and takes a while to assert itself, and I like that too. Very good. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.”
Kumeu River Hunting Hill Chardonnay, Kumeu 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $63.50, that’s $60.33 at 5% off and $57.15 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Erin Larken-Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2022 Hunting Hill Chardonnay is mouthfilling and obvious in its outlay of flavor in the mouth—yellow peach, apricot, Golden Delicious apple, beeswax/lanolin and ripe lime flesh. The flutter of acidity that feathers the fruit is compelling and alluring in its power and juiciness. An exciting wine. It’s a wine I want to drink (I will; the perks) and a wine I am enjoying considering too. It’s intellectual and sensorial/corporeal in equal measure. The Hunting Hill Vineyard was planted in 1982 and overlooks Mate’s Vineyard. This is a pleasurable, exciting, fleshy, complex, salty, kaleidoscopic wine. Excellent. Recommended. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.”
Kumeu River Rays Road Chardonnay, Hawke’s Bay 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 94 points “Lemony and crisp with a stone and seashell undertone to the pretty fruit. Medium body, firm phenolics that tighten the wine on the palate. Racy and intense on the finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”
Erin Larken-Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2022 Rays Road Chardonnay is fine and spicy, with a tense line of acidity and phenolics—they feel linear and interwoven—that stream through the fruit. This is a very pretty, pithy Chardonnay with ground white pepper, white flesh peach, crushed shells, layers of juniper berry and star anise/cut fennel inflections. I like the staying power of the fruit in the mouth. It is persistent and long. This is really nicely done, and I’m looking forward to seeing this wine (and this vineyard) more over its journey. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.”
Kumeu River Village Pinot Noir, Kumeu 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $21.90, that’s $20.81 at 5% off and $19.71 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “Our love for Pinot Noir dates back to the mid-1980s when we planted our first block here in Kumeu. Having already started on our journey to create a world-class Chardonnay, we knew this grape needed a Burgundian counterpart because what grows well where great Chardonnay grows? Now produced from two sites, our Hunting Hill Vineyard in Kumeu and Rays Road in Hawke’s Bay, these two single vineyards show very different expressions of Pinot Noir. Hunting Hill Pinot Noir was planted in 1994 over clay and grown here in the warmer conditions of Kumeu, often providing a beautiful purity of black fruit characters. The Rays Road, in Hawke’s Bay, is a colder, higher altitude vineyard planted on limestone. It’s a much cooler site and provides very intense and focused Pinot Noir characteristics.”
Te Mata:
As one of New Zealand’s cherished estates, and one of Hawke’s Bay’s oldest, this winery boasts 135 hectares of vines focused on Bordeaux and Burgundian varieties across four subregions. They’re also a leader in sustainability efforts in NZ’s wine industry and founding members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) program. It’s been a family-owned estate since its founded in the 1870s, and since 1974 has been in the hands of the Bucks.
Nick Buck is the third generation to helm the estate and studied multiple layers of the wine industry throughout Europe, becoming the top wine buyer in the UK and interning at Chateau Margaux, among other experiences. He took over in 2013, and has renovated the winery and expanded the reach of their wines globally.
Te Mata Estate Vineyards Gamay Noir, Hawke’s Bay 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $24, that’s $22.80 at 5% off and $21.60 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Importer Note “An electric, candy-apple red, fresh, and full of appeal, the Estate Gamay Noir 2022 charms with intense wild strawberry, bubble-gum aromatics, and notes of ripe watermelon and red cherry. The palate is goose-down soft, creamy, and lightly spiced with clove, anise, and cinnamon. Estate Gamay Noir 2022 is a marriage of tempting textures, and summer bright, ultra-ripe, red-fruit freshness.”
Te Mata Estate Vineyards Syrah, Hawke’s Bay 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $24, that’s $22.80 at 5% off and $21.60 at 10% off, 23 bottles in stock now
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “This historic Hawke’s Bay estate once again delivers a delicious and exceptionally well-priced bottling. A blend of three subregions, including the famed Gimblett Gravels, this ruby red Syrah sings with vibrant plum and berry fruit, cracked black pepper, graphite, dried florals and chocolate mint. Aromas flow seamlessly onto the palate, which threads finely structured tannins through the juicy fruit, herbs and spice, emerging out the other side to form a complete wine that is both serious and playful, food-friendly and highly drinkable. Drink now and over the next several years.”
Te Mata Estate Vineyards Chardonnay, Hawke’s Bay 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $22.50, that’s $21.38 at 5% off and $20.25 at 10% off, 32 bottles in stock now
Importer Note “Vibrant white-gold, with bright lemon blossom and concentrated white peach. On the palate, the ripe Hawke’s Bay stone fruit offers mascarpone and macadamia notes, and barrel fermented notes of toast and brioche. The lingering finish is fresh fruit acidity and salinity—the lasting perfume of a perfect Hawke’s Bay summer. fresh fruit acidity with just a flick of salinity – the lasting perfume of a perfect Hawke’s Bay summer.”

Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $24, that’s $22.80 at 5% off and $21.60 at 10% off, 17 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points “Lush and expressive, with plenty of concentration to the mix of mango, lemon curd and litsea oil flavors. Details of dried pineapple, candied ginger and crystalized orange zest add complexity and aromatics on the long finish.”
Rebecca Gibb MW-Vinous 93 points “Initially the 2023 Sauvignon Blanc needs a few moments to get itself together much like we all do after waking up from our slumber. It wears a rather reductive overcoat, but under that flintiness you find concentrated, pure fruit flavors. It’s light in body but dense in concentration thanks to low yields, displaying both focus and punch. It’s almost silvery in color and restrained thanks to hand-picking, leading to pure grapefruit and passion fruit flavors alongside a hint of nectarine. The finish is long, precise and sinewy.”
Jules Taylor Chardonnay, Marlborough 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $19, that’s $18.05 at 5% off and $17.10 at 10% off, 8 bottles in stock now
Winemaker Note “An elegant Chardonnay with fresh, tropical fruit flavours that reflect the beauty of the vineyard without the winemaker’s boots stomping all over it.”
Millton Opou Vineyard Chardonnay, Gisborne 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now
Wilson Daniels Importer Note “In 1984 James and Annie Millton established Millton Vineyards on the banks of the Te Arai River, on the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand in the wine appellation of Gisborne. It is here in 1871 that early settlers first planted grapevines. Millton is New Zealand’s first organic and second biodynamic wine estate, certified by Bio-Gro and Demeter respectively, and has been cultivated this way since the winery’s founding. Opou Vineyard is planted with a mixture of Chardonnay selections. The soil type is complex clay loam over river derived silts giving wines of aroma and texture. First planted as a vineyard in 1969 by Annie Millton’s parents who owned and operated the Opou Station, this site is Millton’s longest established vineyard.”
The Hermit Ram Amphora Salty White, North Canterbury 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $38, that’s $36.10 at 5% off and $34.20 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Julia Harding MW-Jancis Robinson 17/20 “Slightly cloudy very pale gold. Intensely citrus with a light herbal quality. Sour apricot and dried grasses are very subtle. This is complex, creamy, extremely salty. Great complexity and a lovely blend with nothing dominating. Dry, finely tannic, the best flavours of Sauvignon at the core, citrus and herbal and finally green fruits like greengage. Deep, long, salty, a wine for the evening. Good value. Drink 2021–2024”
Wairau River Pinot Noir, Marlborough 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $17.50, that’s $16.63 at 5% off and $15.75 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Tasting Panel 93 points “Earth tones and dusty red tea gratify, surrounded by red cherry cola. Bright cranberry seasoned with cinnamon emerges midway and lasts through the finish.”
Wine Enthusiast 92 points “Like the turn of a pepper grinder, this is full of fresh white pepper aromas, laced with pomegranate, red berry and anise, with a cool stone nuance. The palate is vibrant and fresh with a tug of savory tannins and lovely tangy red berries. There’s a lightness here that provides ease, and a quiet power that adds complexity, all at an affordable price.”
