Morgon is the largest and most famous cru in Beaujolais, partly because it is the home of the pioneers of the natural wine movement, such as Jean Foillard. The cru is divided into climats (such as the revered Côte du Py) that group together lieux-dits with similar soil types.

As the largest cru in Beaujolais, it boasts a great diversity in styles. The wines lean towards robust and powerful, offering density and structure rivaled only by Moulin-a-Vent. The secret is in the soil, affectionately known as “rotten rock” – it’s a combination of decayed granite and schist with pockets of volcanic rock and iron-rich clay, that impart the signature depth and richness. Keep in mind that given the diversity of soil types and winemakers, there are plenty of exceptions.

The typical winemaking method is semi-carbonic, offering attractive fruit notes layered with spice and earth. A growing number of winemakers, though, employ Burgundian methods of destemming and fermentation. Many also allow the wines to undergo long fermentations and aging in barrel, amplifying the more serious structure of the wines.

Ready to explore? There’s no need to drop hundreds of dollars for the best wines. The grandest of the cru offerings at Vinopolis top out at $49 even before our three-day discount. You’re sure to find plenty of stunning yet budget-friendly bottles for your table, soiree, and cellar!

“The 2022 Morgon has a simple but effective bouquet, displaying raspberry and crushed strawberry scents that just require a little more vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, pretty strawberry and raspberry fruit and a brisk, understated but persistent finish. Elegant Morgon. no more, no less.”

“The 2021 Morgon Vieilles Vignes is quite backward on the nose – marine-influenced, dark berry fruit intermixed with tea and bay leaves. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiseled tannins. It is beautifully balanced, lightly spiced with gentle grip on the finish that conveys a very appealing sense of symmetry. Classically styled Morgon. “

“One cuvée that really doesn’t miss a beat in this more challenging vintage is the 2021 Morgon Corcelette Vieilles Vignes Sable, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine evocative of plums, sweet berries, spices and forest floor. Layered and concentrated, with an enveloping core of fruit and melting tannins, it will delight readers nostalgic for more classically proportioned Beaujolais.”

Daniel Bouland Morgon (Climat Corcelette) Les Delys “Vignes plantées en 1926” 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2019 Morgon Les Delys Vignes plantées en 1926 has turned out brilliantly, wafting from the glass with aromas of ripe cherries, blackberries, strawberries, sweet soil tones and spices. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it’s seamless and multidimensional, and with striking concentration, succulent acids and powdery tannins, it’s long and penetrating. While this is carrying less puppy fat than the 2018 at the same age, it’s still quite a demonstrative, fruit-driven vintage of Les Delys, and while it will be long-lived, it can also be approached young.”

“The 2021 Morgon Les Delys Vignes plantées en 1926 is deep and brooding, unwinding in the glass with aromas of wild berries, cherries, exotic spices, cracked black pepper and vine smoke. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with lively acids, powdery tannins and a long, resonant finish, it represents a terrific achievement from Bouland”

“There’s no Impenitents bottling this year, so everything went into the 2021 Morgon Côte du Py Javernières, a brilliant effort in this challenging vintage. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of cherries, ripe plums, wild berries, vine smoke and petals, it’s medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with terrific mid-palate volume, ripe tannins, tangy acids and a long, penetrating finish.”

Domaine Louis Claude Desvignes Morgon (Climat Douby) Chāteau Gaillard 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 27 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 90 points
“Aromas of cherries, smoky berries and plums preface the 2021 Morgon Chāteau Gaillard, a medium to full-bodied, ample and enveloping wine with a sweet core of fruit, lively acids and an open, giving profile. Cropped at a yield of 17 hectoliters per hectare as a result of frost, it was entirely destemmed this year.”

William Kelley-Wine Advocate 91 points
“The 2021 Morgon Montpelain opens in the glass with a delicately spicy bouquet of red berries, plums and vine smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate framed by fine, powdery tannins that assert themselves with gentle grip on the finish. This is always one of the more classically structured wines in the range, and that’s true even in this open, giving vintage.”

Domaine Jean Foillard Morgon (Climat Aux Charmes) Les Charmes Eponym 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $46, that’s $43.70 at 5% off and $41.40 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 94 points
“Glistening ruby. Powerful, mineral-accented cherry, black raspberry, violet and black cardamom scents pick up a spicy nuance as the wine opens up. Chewy and tightly wound on entry, offering juicy dark berry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors that deepen and slowly spread out through the back half. Shows firm tension and impressive energy on a very long, mineral-driven finish framed by polished, even tannins.”
