The 95 Point, Under $40
Caparzo
Arriving Friday
Caparzo never fails to offer up some of the best Brunello for the money. We’re thrilled to see the 2013 get well-deserved high praise from Wine Spectator. But they don’t let it go to their head (or their price)!
Arriving Friday, March 23rd:
Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2013 750ML ($44.95) $36 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 95 points “This cuts more of a broad swath than its peers, yet remains graveful, evoking strawberry, cherry, tobacco and stony mineral flavors. Long and dense in structure, with a tobacco- and under-brush-tinged finish. Best from 2021 through 2033.”
Can’t Wait?
Don’t miss these two popular & pointy picks in best-priced & budget-friendly Brunello from 2012:
Case-6 Caprili Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2012 750ML ($319.95) $189 special (that’s only $31.50/bottle!)
Wine Spectator 94 points “Appealing aromas and flavors of cherry, almond, leather, iron and earth are the hallmarks of this muscular red. Remains fresh and persists on the aftertaste, with echoes of iron and tobacco. Best from 2021 through 2035. 3,500 cases made.”
Ian D’agata – Vinous 93 points “Bright deep red. Very perfumed, pure aromas of raspberry, red cherry, flint and violet. Juicy but dense, with vibrant acidity lifting the floral berry and cherry flavors on the long mineral finish, characterized by an especially silky mouthfeel. Knockout Brunello.”
Wine Enthusiast 93 points “Truffle, leather, mature black-skinned fruit and carob aromas emerge from this powerful red. The full-bodied palate delivers succulent wild cherry, black raspberry, licorice, pipe tobacco and grilled herb flavors with big, chewy tannins. Drink 2019–2027.”
The average price is $43
Canalicchio Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2012 375ML ($29.95) $18 special
Case-6 Canalicchio Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Tuscany 2012 750ML ($319.95) $179 special (that’s only $29.83/bottle!)
International Wine Report 93 points “The 2012 Canalicchio is a beautifully crafted, refined Brunello which spent more than 24 months in medium-large Slavonia oak casks. It slowly opens with aromas of dried cherries ans plums woven together with walnuts, tobacco, leather, dried spices and hints of balsamic. Medium-bodied and firm, with a fine grained tannins and lovely balance leading to the ultra-long, chewy finish. Today this is still a bit austere and will require a few years of additional bottle age before it becomes fully accessible. (Best 2020-2029) – February, 2017 (JD).”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino shows excellent continuity with past vintages and underlines a house style that is specific to this estate. This is a nuanced and delicate expression of Sangiovese that delivers grace and power. It walks a fine line between these two opposites. The bouquet is redolent of wild berry, red currant, grilled herb, wild mushroom and underbrush. I gave the 2011 vintage the same score, although the differences between the two wines are pronounced. The 2011 vintage shows the warm climate with more directness, whereas this edition offers more subtle depth and finesse. Both wines are most appropriate for near or medium-term drinking.”
The average price is $39Don’t miss the newly reviewed 2013 Brunellos from Altesino – our offer is below!
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is fabulous. In 2011, proprietor Paolo Bianchini bottled just one Brunello. That commitment to quality comes through loud and clear. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco and licorice all flesh out in an effortless, incredibly inviting wine. The warmth of the vintage and the natural generosity of these vineyards in Castelnuovo is evident, yet the 2011 possesses remarkable balance to match all of that intensity. I don’t expect the 2011 to make old bones, but is gorgeous today. Readers should expect a flamboyant, decadently full-throttle wine built on voluptuousness and generous, racy fruit. Bianchini gave the 2011 three full years in cask.”
Monica Larner – Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is a very beautiful wine that shows a fraction of good things to come. Very fruit-driven at the moment, it should flesh out further with time. Evident fruit underlines the warm growing conditions of this vintage. You get dark cherry, raspberry, dried strawberry and plum. The bouquet doesn’t feel overripe per se, but you definitely get a taste of the warm growing season. Delve deeper, and this Brunello begins to reveal spice, herb, cola, tar and black licorice. These elements form the base of the wine’s budding complexity. As nice as this wine is to drink now, I look forward to trying it five years from now.”

Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2012 Le Pergole Torte is brilliant. In fact, this is one of the best showings of the 2012 that I can recall. The flavors are bright, focused and pulsing with energy. Because of its mid-weight structure and not overly complex personality, the 2012 looks like it will start drinking well sooner rather than later. Even today, the 2012 is extremely beautiful. This is a terrific showing for the 2012.”
The average price is $118
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The gracious, perfumed 2014 Montevertine is a wine of pure finesse. Silky, slender and exceptionally beautiful, it is not the most obvious or powerful Montevertine, but it impresses with its balance, poise and class. Floral notes add nuance to the bright, sculpted finish.”
Importer notes: “the standard bearer of the estate, it is aged 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels and is composed of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo (with perhaps a hint of Colorino). The fruit for this bottling comes primarily from a 2.5 hectare parcel of vines planted in 1982 on a south – southeast facing slope.”

Brovia Barolo DOCG, Piedmont 2012 750ML ($51.95) Was $46, Now $39 special, 26 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni “Brovia’s 2012 Barolo is classy, polished and absolutely delicious. With a little bit of air, the 2012 can be enjoyed now, but it also has enough freshness and balance to drink well for at least a handful of years. I have seen Brovia’s straight Barolo age well, so I won’t be surprised if that turns out to be the case here as well. Floral and red stone fruit notes give the 2012 much of its freshness and mid-weight feel. This is an especially lifted, gracious Barolo for the vintage.”

Brovia Barolo DOCG, Piedmont 2013 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 21 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 93 points “Brovia’s 2013 Barolo is gorgeous. Deep, ample and beautifully layered in the glass, it possesses terrific expansiveness in every dimension. An exotic bouquet laced with hints of orange peel, cinnamon, pomegranate, kirsch and mint melds into a core of rich red stone fruit. This one of the best straight Barolos readers will come across. It is built on a core of fruit from the Brea Cru in Serralunga (the part outside the Ca’ Mia parcel), with the addition of about 30% juice left over after the casks for the single-vineyard Barolos have been filled. The 2013 is one of the very finest values in high-end wine. Don’t miss it.”
“Marcarini remains one of the best sources for traditional, cellar worthy Barolos that can still be found at fair prices.” – Antonio Galloni
Marcarini Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2011 750ML ($69.95) $49 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 91 points “Marcarini’s 2011 Barolo Brunate comes across as a bit light in this vintage. Site specific nuance is pushed to the background in this decidedly mid-weight Barolo. Dark red cherry, tobacco, mint and crushed flowers flesh out in a relatively pliant, open Brunate that uncharacteristically appears to be built for near and medium-term drinking.”
The average price nationally is $53
Marcarini Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2013 750ML ($64.95) $50.90 special, 18 bottles in stock now

Marcarini Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2013 3L ($319.95) $279 special, 5 double-magnums in stock now
Antonio Galloni 91 points “The 2013 Barolo Brunate is laced with the essence of dark cherry, herb, licorice, sage, tobacco and menthol. The aromatic intensity, intrigue and textural depth of Brunate comes through nicely. Deep, rich and beautifully layered, the 2013 offers lovely depth and balance in the classic understated Marcarini style.”
Francesco Rinaldi & Figli Barolo DOCG, Piedmont 2013 750ML ($59.95) $47 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2013 Barolo is a gorgeous entry-level bottling. Sweet tobacco, blood orange, anise, dried flowers and cedar give the wine its aromatic depth and delineation. Bright and exquisitely layered in the glass, with lovely persistence, the 2013 drinks well now, but also has enough pedigree and complexity to hold for another decade-plus. This is a superb showing from Rinaldi.”
A value Riserva from a traditional estate?
Alessandro e Gian Natale Fantino ‘Vigna dei Dardi’ Riserva, Barolo DOCG 2010 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 28 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 95 points “A big, dark wine, 2010 Barolo Riserva Cascina Dardi is dense, powerful and structured, with massive tannins that need time to settle down. Black cherry, menthol, licorice, tobacco, cloves and a host of dark, balsamic-inflected notes build into a crescendo of aromas and flavors on the huge finish. Like all the Fantino wines, the 2010 Barolo Riserva starts off a bit rustic and then finds greater finesse with time in the glass. Readers should plan on being patient with the 2010.”
G. B. Burlotto: “These are some of the most compelling, traditionally made wines in Piedmont.” – Antonio Galloni
G. B. Burlotto Barolo DOCG, Piedmont 2012 750ML ($49.95) $39 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 91 points “The 2012 Barolo is a gorgeous entry-level offering from Burlotto and a fabulous introduction to the house style. Lifted, precise and translucent, the 2012 is a pure joy to taste today. This mid-weight, refined Barolo is pure class. Sweet red berry, mint and spice nuances are laced into the super-expressive, inviting finish. Most of this fruit is sourced from Breri.”
The average price nationally is $47
Burlotto is best known for their trio of Barolo crus (Acclivi, Cannubi and Monvigliaro), but some of their most delicious wines are made on a much more humble scale. It’s uncommon to see such prestigious wineries do great work and keep the prices down on their less expensive bottlings, but Burlotto manages the tricky task of both. The unique Sauvignon Blanc, Barbera and Langhe Nebbiolo all show the quality and grace that the estate is known for and come in at prices that are more than reasonable. These remain staff favorites and we think you’ll love them, too.

Grapelive 93 points “Scott Frank’s Bow & Arrow Gamay is one of the best new world versions I’ve tried and I love the Loire inspiration of his wines in general. These are lively and energy filled offerings that include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir(s), Cabernet Franc, Melon (de Bourgogne), this Gamay and the Rhinestones, a wonderful blend of Gamay and Pinot Noir, most from Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Frank’s Portland-based winery is without a question is a must try Oregon label, and especially try his Gamay stuff. With this 2016 he has hit a new level of quality and detail. It would be easy to believe this was a Cru Beaujolais with its Brouilly-like intensity and earthy layered fruit and acidity that kicks in on the palate. Even though he is more Loire influenced, this catches your attention and puts in a stellar performance when put in a lineup that included Dutraive’s old vine Fleurie! For the price, the quality is remarkable. With some of the other Oregon Gamay Noir(s) being almost twice the price, its pretty, electric-magenta/purple color thrills in the glass along with its earthy tones and floral/fruity essences filling the bouquet before a sharply focused palate of blackberry, blueberry, tart plum and subtle jolly rancher blue raspberry, along with hints of leather, anise, peppery cinnamon and walnut. The body is lithe and the Bow & Arrow Gamay feels taught and crisp, but ripe tannins and texture come out with air making for impressive impact. This is a joyous, semi-carbonic (traditional method) example and holds its own in mineral driven varietal purity. Plus it rocks with food, pulling extra depth, earthy charm and complexity when it counts. I love this vintage!”
Josh Raynolds – Vinous 90 points “Bright magenta. Fresh red and blue fruit scents, along with subtle herb and mineral overtones. Nervy and light on its feet, offering bitter cherry and boysenberry flavors underscored by a peppery spice quality. Closes with solid grip and strong persistence, leaving behind cherry pit and violet pastille notes.”
Case-12 Bow & Arrow Rhinestones Red, Willamette Valley 2016 750ML ($299.95) $239 special (that’s only $19.92/bottle and the lowest listed price in the USA today!)
Grapelive 95 points “The brilliant and edgy Rhinestones (a Loire Valley inspired Pinot Noir and Gamay blend from Bow & Arrow Wines) is one of the best Oregon wines that is under the radar. In fact it is one of the best new world wines for the money period! Scott Frank is killing it with his latest releases at Portland’s Bow & Arrow Wines, especially [with] this Touraine style Rhinestones cuvee that comes from the all-organic/biodynamic vines and the marine sedimentary soils at Johan Vineyards in the Van Duzer Corridor of the Willamette Valley. This wine has so much going on and [is] beautifully detailed. In Burgundy you have the earthy/feral Gamay and Pinot Noir blend, called Passetoutgrain, [that,] while interesting, it never seems to be taken too seriously. Here, though, Frank reaches for the Loire for inspiration and the natural winemaking hot-bed there to craft his Rhinestones, a wine that I’ve always loved. This 2016 looks to be the best yet. It’s outrageously seductive and pretty with a stemmy/racy vitality and gorgeous purity, heightened by an exotic perfume and extraordinary length. Whole cluster and native ferment, the Rhinestones is an intriguing play between ripe fruitiness and savvy savoriness with a tangy, but juicy/generous Gamay palate and graceful Pinot Noir structure. It is nicely brisk and great slightly chilled, [and] it fills out in the mouth with a medium body and a heavenly texture featuring black cherry, plum, mulberry and currant fruits along with sweet liquid roses, hints of lilac and walnut as well as dried basil, peppery spices, mineral, chalk, anise and cinnamon. The stems add grip and tension to this absolutely fantastic wine. Judged on its own merits this stuff rocks and is truly profound. Bow & Arrow’s Gamay stand alone is pretty damn good, but this wine is on another level, it made me say the F-word followed by YEAH! The 2016 Rhinestones is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Gamay. It’s a runaway success of sensual sensations and vibrancy. Bow & Arrow has just blown away all the doors, removes all prejudice about blending Pinot Noir and shows Gamay to be a great partner of remarkable character. Do not miss this wine. This is one of America’s new wine geek(y) treasures, unique and with its own personality that will appeal in particular to those with a wilder mind. This latest Rhinestones is sensational.”Chateau Pesquie Luberon Le Paradou Grenache, Rhone 2016 750ML ($14.95) $11.90 special
Case-12 Chateau Pesquie Luberon Le Paradou Grenache, Rhone 2016 750ML ($149.95) $119 special (that’s only $9.92/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 90 points “The Le Paradou label is a joint venture between the Ventoux’s Chateau Pesquie Chaudiere family and importer Eric Solomon. The 2016 Vin de France, which has already been bottled, is 100% Grenache and comes from vines in the Ventoux and the Roussillon’s Agly Valley. It was brought up all in concrete tank. Deep ruby colored, with awesome notes of garrigue, pepper, kirsch and dark fruits, this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, no hard edges and a great finish. It sells for a song and way over-delivers.”

Adriano Marco e Vittorio Basarin, Barbaresco DOCG 2014 750ML ($34.95) Was $29, Now $24 special
Wine Spectator 94 points “Elegant, leading off with perfumed aromas of rose, cherry, strawberry and white pepper. The profile is sleek, with a solid base of acidity and tannins. Shows terrific length, evoking fruit and mineral on the aftertaste. Best from 2019 through 2033.”
The average price nationally is $26
Terry Theise note “Zero botrytis, so Martin opted to make this dry masterpiece. It’s less wiggly than the Haardt but also deeper, more layered; a wine of great, deep humor, an exegesis of cassis, physio-sweet, with a hugely clinging salty finish. If dry Scheurebe can be grandiose, this one is.”
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2013 Calcáreo Río de los Chacayes is sourced from the Chacayes zone of Tunuyán on top of Vista Flores towards the mountains. It has a riper, spicier, floral, and aromatic profile with notes of thyme and rosemary. It is the most extroverted of the three, and also feels quite polished. The palate, however, is more serious, with the austerity of the rocks, a very fine thread of subtle acidity and a long, long, long finish with sweeter tannins. It’s a rolling stone covered in chalk and surrounded by thyme. Awesome! 3,000 bottles were produced.”

Domaine Huet Vouvray Clos du Bourg Sec, Loire 2016 750ML ($47.95) Was $39, Now $36, 36+ bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 93 points “Bright and pure, with delightful pear, green almond and green plum notes laced with a fennel streak, ending with finely beaded acidity and a mineral echo through the finish. Very refined. Drink now through 2027.”
The average price nationally is $40
Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Sec, Loire 2016 750ML ($39.95) Was $33, Now $29, 36+ bottles in stock now
Jancis Robinson 17/20 “Already has the lanolin character very prominently on the nose, then fairly light-bodied fruit with a ripe, tropical citrus character, plus a bit of peach. Perhaps a little brief, but has lovely typical Chenin funkiness. Drink 2017-2022.”
John Gilman 90 points “The 2016 Le Haut Lieu Sec from Domaine Huet is a pretty wine and much less powerful than the 2015 version. The wine offers up lovely youthful aromatics of quince, tart pineapple, chalky minerality, orange peel, lanolin, a whisper of the honeycomb to come with bottle age and a gently floral top note. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied and nicely detailed, with good, but not great depth at the core, sound acids and very nice length and grip on the nascently complex finish. I like the shape of this wine very much, which does not have quite as much in reserve as many recent vintages of this bottling, but which has plenty of complexity and really impeccable balance. It may well age like the 1988 vintage here. 2017-2045.”
The average price is $36
Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Mont Sec, Loire 2016 750ML ($47.95) Was $39, Now $36, 36+ bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points “Green plum and verbena notes lead the way for now, with a flash of quinine on the finish. This is juicy, but still a bit compact overall, with the core of ample pear, quince and ginger flavors in reserve. Just wait for everything to knit together and stretch out, as the purity and length are there. Best from 2018 through 2028.”
The average price nationally is $40
Domaine des Baumard Savennieres, Loire 2015 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points “Alluring, with quince, creamed pear, verbena and green almond flavors allied to a creamy texture, all offset beautifully through the finish by light quinine and mineral hints. Approachable, but this seems built for the cellar. Best from 2018 through 2030.”
Importer note “When Foreau issues a “Sec” (and the decision to do so relates entirely to the vintage conditions and the composition of the grapes at harvest), the wine can carry from 1 to 2 grams of residual sugar but never more than 6 grams. Because of the vibrant acidity that accompanies these wines, the sensation one experiences is of drinking a scintillatingly dry wine, although one with considerable body and a honeyed texture. We tend to have several vintages available at all times so that our clients can have the option of enjoying the Vouvray Sec in its youth but also with several years of bottle age.”
Wine & Spirits 93 points “Perhaps the least challenging of Joly’s three cuvees from his biodynamic estate, this grows on schist soils with an eastern exposure. It’s also the most synesthetic, presenting its tastes in a sunrise of color, from golden quince to red-hued tannins. It’s pure and honeyed without any sense of sweetness or any notes of oxidation. Bursting with freshness, this is powerful, grand Savennieres.”Nicolas Joly Vignobles de la Coulee de Serrant ‘Clos de la Coulee de Serrant’ Savennieres, Loire 2014 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 95+ points “The yellow-golden 2014 Clos de la Coulée de Serrant, a world famous and iconic Chenin with its own appellation (Savennières – Coulée de Serrant AC), opens with a beautifully clear, precise and aromatic bouquet of ripe and dried, lovely concentrated stone and grapefruit, as well as some honey aromas intermixed with crushed crystalline stones and herbal flavors. Highly elegant, clear and vital on the palate, this full-bodied wine is immensely intense but also silky, transparent and finesse-full. The long and stimulating finish is enormously piquant and salty, very compact but in perfect balance. There are dried Mediterranean herbs like thyme along with concentrated apricot and quince flavors in the persistent aftertaste. A great, elegant and very refined Coulée.”

“I was quite taken with the wines I tasted at Montevertine this year. The 2014 Montevertine and Le Pergole Torte have turned out beautifully.” – Antonio Galloni
While most wines labeled ‘Super Tuscan’ are built around international grape varieties such as Cabernet or Syrah, the Pergole Torte from Montevertine is 100% old vine Sangiovese: the grape that is the heart and soul of the Chianti Classico region. In 1981, Sergio Manetti split from the Chianti Classico Consortium to produce what he saw as (and what became) the future for the wine region’s more traditional-minded producers. His son, Martino, carries on his father’s work of crafting the Pergole Torte single-vineyard wine in only the best vintages. We’re excited to offer the newest release – arriving this Friday!

Antonio Galloni 97 points “The flagship 2014 Le Pergole Torte possesses striking depth, nuance and pliancy, all in the midweight, slightly slender style of the vintage. Sweet red cherry, plum, cinnamon, dried flowers, mint, cinnamon and pomegranate infuse this super-expressive, sexy Pergole Torte.”
James Suckling 96 points “A transparent wine with flowers, dark fruit and citrus fruit on the nose. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a bright and fresh finish. I love the dynamic cherry and vivid floral character. Mineral, too. Bright acidity. This is one of the best wines of the 2014 vintage in Tuscany. Auguri. Drink or hold.”

The Beauty of Terroir
Arriving in April
“Tasting a Dagueneau wine for the first time was a revelation. His Sauvignon Blancs had an unexpected purity and clarity to them. The flavors were intense but nuanced. It wasn’t the fruit that was piercing, as in so many Sauvignon Blancs, but the freshness and the focus. As powerful a personality as he was, his wines did not exalt the stature of the winemaker so much as the beauty of the terroir.” – Eric Asimov

New Wine Spectator Reviews
Arriving in July
Wine Spectator 95 points “An intense perfume of juniper, bay laurel, sage, rose and berries marks this silky red. The structure is there, yet superb balance and refined tannins help this retain elegance through the long finish. Almost ethereal in its presence. Best from 2021 through 2036.”Altesino Montosoli, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2013 750ML ($119.95) $85 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 97 points “Balsamic notes of juniper, sage and eucalyptus are buried underneath the cherry and plum fruit in this expressive, supple red, which is dense and well-structured, with terrific balance and a long iron and saline aftertaste. Just a tad richer and broader than the blended Brunello. Best from 2021 through 2038.”
