Orin Swift Machete, California 2014 750ML ($49.95) $44 special
#6 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2016
Robert Parker 96 points “The 2014 Proprietary Red Blend Machete finished at 15.7% natural alcohol and is a blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache aged 10 months in 40% new French oak. This wine, at 15,500 cases, is telltale opaque bluish/purple with a super nose of barbecue meat and herbs, blackberries, blueberries, white flowers and sweet, dark raspberries in the background. The wine has fabulous texture, great intensity, full-bodied power (15.7%), and a long, long finish. It is a killer effort and like the Abstract, probably best drunk in its first 5-6 years of life because of its charm.”
Wine Spectator 94 points “Generous and expressive, big and brawny, offering a mouthful of tannins but also brimming with flavors and aromas, including Earl Grey tea, dark chocolate, dried violet and toasted gingerbread. Rich notes of plum and black cherry are balanced by forest floor and earthy accents, lingering on the long finish. Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache. Drink now through 2030.”

New Week – New Arrivals
Oregon
Sequitur Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2014 750ML ($119.95) $99 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 94 points “Limpid ruby-red. Smoky, mineral-accented aromas of black raspberry, cherry cola and incense carry a strong spicecake overtone. Stains the palate with sappy red berry liqueur, spicecake and floral pastille flavors that are lifted and given definition and tension by juicy acidity. At once rich and nervy, with no excess fat but showing excellent depth and intensity of flavor. Finishes with sexy notes of candied violet and smoky Indian spices and superb, gently tannic persistence. This wine’s Beaux Freres bloodline is very clear to see.”
Cameron Winery ‘Arley’s Leap’ Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2014 750ML ($59.95) $46 special
Wine Advocate 91-93 points “The 2014 Pinot Noir Arley’s Leap has a fresh, vibrant bouquet with blackberry and briary fruit, a little darker than I was expecting, but still extremely well defined and “natural.” The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well-integrated oak, smooth in texture with blackberry, raspberry and hints of vanilla pod towards the well-defined finish. Great potential.”
Belle Pente Estate Reserve Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton District 2013 1.5L ($119.95) $89 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 93 points “Dark red. A highly aromatic bouquet evokes fresh red fruits, incense and Asian spices, along with bright mineral and floral overtones. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering alluringly sweet raspberry preserve, lavender pastille and spicecake flavors that deepen and spread out slowly with air. Delivers a suave blend of power and elegance, finishing with silky, harmonious tannins and excellent clarity and floral-driven persistence.”

Ayoub ??? Vineyard Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2014 750ML ($69.95) $54.80 special
Wine Enthusiast 94 points “No, that’s not a typo. The ??? Vineyard bottling conceals (intentionally) the fruit sources for these grapes, which come from one of Oregon’s most expensive and highly-reviewed producers. It’s crystal-clear in both appearance and flavor, building upon a cranberry/raspberry base into a potent young wine with expressive purity. A streak of gun metal, often found in consulting winemaker Robert Brittan’s own wines, adds a stylish note to the finish.”
Ayoub Estate Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2014 750ML ($69.95) $55 special
Wine Enthusiast 95 points – Cellar Selection “Bright raspberry and strawberry flavors kick off this well-balanced effort. It’s buoyed by ample natural acidity and adorned with highlights of pastry and baking spices. It expands gracefully as it breathes, adding volume and density. Give this extra cellar time. It should drink best from 2018–2030.”
Winery note “Perfumy and seductive nose with dried rose petals, wild strawberry, red cherry compote, candied orange peel and nutmeg. Satiny and complex on the palate, with generous bright red cherry, pomegranate, savory notes and lots of tension. The layered finish evolves endlessly on the palate. This is a beautiful wine, another great expression of the Estate vineyard. It needs time to reveal its full beauty; best from 2018 to 2028.”
Ayoub Overlook Vineyard Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($59.95) $51.90 special
Wine Enthusiast 93 points “Made for the first time in this vintage, this young wine is tight and brambly, with tart, peppery berry fruit. Chewy tannins denote its youth, and the finish delivers outstanding depth. If it follows the path of other Ayoub Pinots, this will benefit greatly from further bottle age.”
Winery note “This is my first release from this vineyard, which is a great site located ¼ mile from the Estate Vineyard. Very aromatic with crushed blackberry, raspberry, tobacco and nutmeg. The palate gushing with a medley of red and black berries, subtle hazelnut, white pepper and licorice. The long, silky and juicy finish envelops your palate. Gorgeous wine! Best from 2017 to 2024.”
Ayoub Vineyard Memoirs Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($39.95) $36 special
Wine Enthusiast 93 points – Editor’s Choice “The entry-level Pinot in the Ayoub lineup would be the top cuvée for any number of wineries. Full and fruity, with rich cherry flavors backed with defining minerality, it’s powerful, deep and immaculately clear.”
Winery note “Memoirs is my fond personal tribute to my family. The picture on the 2014 label was taken with my father and siblings in 1964 on the beach in Beirut, Lebanon. The 2014 Memoirs is a blend of Pinot Noir crafted from six select vineyards in the Dundee Hills & McMinnville AVAs. The diversity of the vineyards gives this wine a wide array of layered flavors & complexity. A smoky, spicy, sultry wine. Wraps the nose with sassafras and spiced cherry pie, then builds to fever pitch with ripe, rich, muscular structure loaded with an array of black and red fruit laced with exotic spices. The mouth-coating finish is balanced and persistent. Best from 2016 to 2022.”
WillaKenzie Estate ‘Terres Basses’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2013 750ML ($61.95) $49 special
Wine Enthusiast 93 points “Big, dark and rich, the black-cherry fruit is veined with iron ore. That resonant minerality, along with zippy acids, makes this wine seem especially dry. Tannins are polished and flavors linger magnificently, with a mocha-java finish.”

Vincent Pinot Noir Ribbon Ridge 2015 750ML ($27.95) $24 special
VinopolNote: “This wine is made entirely from fruit from Armstrong Vineyard, on Lewis Rodgers Lane, in Ribbon Ridge. Destemmed and aged in neutral wood to highlight the terroir, it shows a ton of Ribbon Ridge character in an elegant, more red-fruited paradigm. It shows incredibly silky texture and plenty of red and black cherry fruit, as well as five-spice and floral notes, on both the nose and palate. One of our favorite producers, this is a wine to stock up on.”

California
Orin Swift Mannequin White Blend, California 2014 750ML ($31.95) $24 special
Robert Parker 92 points “One of his most popular wines is the creatively packaged 2014 Chardonnay Mannequin. The label alone would draw plenty of interest. This wine, primarily Chardonnay with a few percent of Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Muscat and Roussane, was aged sur lie for nine months in 40% French oak. It is no shy wine at 15.5% alcohol and there is plenty of it – 8,073 cases, which is good because it is a hot-selling wine to say the least. This wine offers notes of brioche, white peach, honeysuckle and citrus oil in a full-bodied intense style, but with terrific acidity and rather restrained oak. The wine is rich, ripe and impressive. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.”

Orin Swift Abstract Red, California 2015 750ML ($37.95) $27 special
No Reviews For the 2015 Yet
2014 Review– Robert Parker 94 points “The absurdly delicious 2014 Proprietary Red Blend Abstract comes from multiple AVAs: Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Amador and El Dorado and is a blend of Grenache, Petite Sirah and Syrah aged 10 months in 30% new French oak. This is a beauty and a great price for a wine of this quality. There are 26,547 cases, and the wine has an opaque ruby/purple color, gorgeous nose of creosote, kirsch liqueur and cassis with a touch of licorice, Provençal herbs and pepper. Delicious, full-bodied, unctuously textured, thick and juicy, this mouth-filling, big wine cuts a broad swath across the palate, but is never hot or awkward. Best drunk in its first 5-6 years. It finished at 15.7% natural alcohol.”
Orin Swift Mercury Head Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2014 750ML ($119.95) $106.60 special
Robert Parker 96 points “A spectacular wine, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Mercury Head is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the Taplin and Morisoli vineyards and several Atlas Peak vineyards, aged 18 months in 50% new French oak. There are 5,461 cases of this wine. The wine is a classic, broad-shouldered, compelling Cabernet Sauvignon with beautiful blueberry and crème de cassis fruit, Christmas fruitcake, cedar wood, white chocolate notes and a hint of graphite and background toast. It is ripe, full-bodied, pure, multidimensional and a mouthful of succulent Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next 20+ years.”

Orin Swift Papillon Red, Napa Valley 2014 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
Robert Parker 94 points “The 2014 Bordeaux Proprietary Blend Papillion (15,748 cases) was aged 16 months in 40% new French oak. Fairly priced for what the consumer gets, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc (15.1% alcohol) exhibits notes of forest floor, graphite, blackcurrant, blackberry fruit and spring flowers followed by a full-bodied, unctuously textured, deep, rich pure wine to drink over the next 10-15+ years.”
Daou Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles 2014 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points “Youthful purple. Ripe, spice-accented cherry, dark berries and candied flowers on the deeply scented nose and in the mouth. Silky and open-knit; a building peppery element adds vivacity to sweet blueberry and cherry flavors. Bitter chocolate and allspice notes come up on the clinging finish, which is shaped by smooth tannins. In the context of California Cabernet, this wine delivers fantastic value.”

Silky and seamless on the palate, offering juicy citrus fruit and red berry flavors and a touch of chalky minerals. Nicely balances richness and vivacity, showing no rough edges. Closes supple, floral and long, with a toasty leesy note coming in late.”

Delamotte Blanc de Blancs Brut NV 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
Stephen Tanzer 92 points “Very pale greenish-silver color. Extremely fine, precise aromas of talc, mint and fresh herbs. Creamy and round but utterly vibrant; this expands to fill the mouth yet communicates an impression of weightlessness. A blanc de blancs of great delicacy. Finishes very long, youthful and bright.”ST
Delamotte Brut NV 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
James Suckling 91 points “A cleverly orchestrated reductive edge to the nose, this has a layer of toasted cashew ahead of citrus, peach, spice, fine cherry and raspberry fruits. The palate’s nicely crafted to deliver an even and smooth impression. Red fruit flavors run long and smooth, with some fresh bread dough notes too; nicely yeasty to close. Drink now.”
Champagne Hebrart Cuvee Reserve Premier Cru Brut NV 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Champagne Hebrart Cuvee Reserve Premier Cru Brut NV 375ML ($31.95) $28 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points “(77% Pinot Noir and 23% Chardonnay; 8.2 g/l dosage; disgorged in March, 2014): Bright straw. Lively, mineral-driven aromas of fresh citrus fruits, melon and white flowers. Musky, nicely concentrated orchard and pit fruit flavors are given spine by juicy acidity, which adds cut to the back half. The floral quality repeats on the finish, which hangs on with strong stony persistence. Give this youthful Champagne a little air time, or even decant it, like the cool French and French-wannabe sommeliers often do.” JR
Chartogne-Taillet Cuvee Sainte Anne Brut NV 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 special
Wine Advocate 91 points “The NV Sainte Anne Brut – a blend of 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay, so no Meunier anymore – is entirely sourced in Merfy, the village where the domaine is based. This youngest release includes the 2013 harvest (65%) and has been blended with 2012, 2011 and 2010. Pure, lean and complex on the palate, this is a very elegant, straight and pretty firmly structured cuvée that finishes with a lingering salinity and tension. Very well structured, with good length. At this price, it is a Must Try.”
Pierre Paillard Bouzy Grand Cru Brut NV 375ML ($27.95) $21.90 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points “Light gold, with a faint onion skin cast. Spicy orange zest and honeydew on the fragrant, mineral-accented nose. Dry and tightly focused, offering lively Meyer lemon and melon flavors and a deeper suggestion of nectarine. Finishes with building floral character and excellent tangy persistence, leaving bitter citrus zest and dusty mineral notes behind.” JR
Gaston Chiquet Carte Verte Premier Cru Brut Tradition, Champagne NV 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Stephen Tanzer 91 points “Light yellow. Suave, floral aromas of poached pear, blood orange, melon and honey. A dusty mineral quality adds lift to spicy red berry and citrus fruit flavors. Closes nervy and long, with resonating minerality and a touch of gingerbread.” ST

Case-12 Domaine Collet Pere et Fils Cremant de Bourgogne Brut NV 750ML ($279.95) $219 special (that’s only $18.25/bottle!)
100% Chardonnay from Collet’s Grand Cru & Premier Cru Pargues Vineyards.
Importer note “Romain vinifies his base wines completely in steel before bottling and the addition of liqueur de tirage, and allows the wine to sit on its lees for fifteen months before disgorgement and a minute dosage, allowing the fruit of his pedigreed family vineyards to express itself. The wine is as precise as a bell and as refreshing as spring water; on the nose there is orange blossom, copper minerals and gardenia. The palate is as vinous and minerally as his superb still Chablis. The finish is dry, almost saline with caressing, gentle mousse and flavors of oyster shells, apricot and key lime. Disgorged July 2015. Enjoy this beauty as an aperitif, or with Dungeness crab, salt cod gratin or pasta carbonara.”

Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 2014 750ML ($899.95) $766 special
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 95 points “Bright yellow. Reticent nose smells softer than the Batard, offering scents of ripe stone fruits, grilled almond, ginger, smoke and musky white flowers. Big and plush in the mouth, conveying a considerably sweeter impression than the Batard. This wonderfully silky, seamless wine mounts in volume on the back half, finishing very ripe but dry, with splendid length. Perhaps not quite as taut and iodiney as it was from barrel a year ago but I’m just quibbling. Production here was just 33 hectoliters per hectare.”

Domaine Michel Lafarge Clos des Chenes, Volnay Premier Cru 2005 750ML ($399.95) $319 special
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 95+ points “Full ruby-red. Pure, complex but restrained nose offers blackberry, black cherry, licorice, spices and black pepper. Wonderfully intense and vibrant, with a compellingly chewy texture and great thrust to the highly concentrated dark fruit and bitter chocolate flavors. The fine-grained tannins spread out to saturate the palate of this powerfully structured Volnay, with the wine’s perfume lingering in the mouth for minutes. I asked Frederic when the estate last made a Clos des Chenes as good as this, and he replied that it’s the best since the ’61. Extended bottle aging may well bring an even higher rating. Volnay doesn’t get much better than this.”

“Juicy and exuberant, the 2012 Pommard hits the palate with plenty of intensity and richness. Hard candy, sweet red berries, wild flowers and mint inform an opulent Pommard with plenty of immediacy and raciness. There is plenty of near and medium term appeal. In 2012, the Pommard includes some Commaraine fruit.”–Antonio Galloni

Burghound 89-91 points “Outstanding top value. Here the nose offers a big step up in aromatic elegance with its cool and admirably pure red currant and spice scents. Coudert Pere ‘Clos de la Roilette’ Fleurie 2015 750ML ($21.95) $18 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 92 points “Deep ruby. Heady red and blue fruit, potpourri and fruitcake aromas show excellent clarity and pick up a minerally nuance with air. Combines power and finesse with a deft hand, offering palate-staining black raspberry and boysenberry flavors that spread out slowly on the back half. Shows real intensity and a suave floral pastille quality on the youthfully tannic finish, which leaves a sappy blue fruit note behind.”

Isole e Olena Cepparello Toscana IGT 2013 3L ($399.95) $333 special
Antonio Galloni 96 points “The 2013 Cepparello is superb. Polished, silky nuanced and exceptionally beautiful, the 2013 exudes freshness and energy from start to finish. Succulent red cherry, plum, lavender and rose petal are some of the signatures. Aging in French oak shapes the wine nicely without marking it excessively. The purity of the flavors is striking. This is an especially cool, savory Cepparello built on finesse and persistence rather than power. Rain during harvest robbed the wine of some of its breadth. Otherwise, this is a striking Cepparello. I can’t wait to see how it ages.”

Cavallotto Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe, Barolo Riserva DOCG 2010 1.5L ($299.95) $249 special
Wine Spectator 97 points “An old-school style, this complex red features an array of cherry, berry, leather, tobacco and underbrush flavors, backed by a dense, beefy structure. Long and powerful, with a savory, saline aftertaste. Shows ample fruit up front, but should be better in two to three years. Best from 2019 through 2036.”
Antonio Galloni 95 points “A dramatic wine, the 2010 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe hits the palate with seemingly never-ending array of aromas, flavors and textures. Dark-fleshed stone fruits, graphite, smoke, licorice and tar are some of the many nuances that emerge as the 2010 continues to take shape in the glass. This big, strapping Barolo is likely to require a good bit of patience. As it often does, the San Giuseppe shows the more brooding side of Nebbiolo.”

Cavallotto Bricco Boschis Vignolo, Barolo Riserva DOCG 2010 750ML ($119.95) $99 special
Antonio Galloni 93+ points “The 2010 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is dark, mysterious and inviting, with serious depth and layers of flavors that unfurl in the glass. Rose petal, sage, rosemary, licorice and mint wrap around a core of dense red cherry and pomegranate-infused fruit. This is a decidedly plush, powerful Riserva. There is plenty of tannin lurking beneath, though, so readers need to be patient. Incense, tobacco and hints of game add the closing shades of complexity.”

Dom Perignon P2 Plenitude Brut, Champagne 1998 750ML ($399.95) $289 special, 9 bottles available
Wine Spectator 98 points – Highly Recommended – “Offers precision and finely detailed form, powered by an expansive palate of flavor. The layers of ripe crushed blackberry and glazed apricot fruit complement the saline-tinged minerality and oyster shell notes, graced by hints of pastry, honeycomb and exotic spice. Mouthwatering and persistent on the zesty finish. Drink now through 2030.” WS
James Suckling 97 points “A P2 release indicating it has been matured to the 2nd Plenitude, the middle stage of Dom Perignon’s three-phase life as defined by Richard Geoffroy. This is a wine with some real tension between complexity and freshness that makes for incredibly engaging drinking. The nose offers up a little white peppery edge from the pinot; oyster shell saline freshness, red florals, sweet smelling woody spices and brioche, spiced biscuits and subtle roasted coffee notes – impressively complex. The phenolics register on the palate as a discreetly mineral, saline character, there’s sorbet-like texture through the middle before finishing with comet-like line and length.” JS
Pierre Peters Cuvee Speciale ‘Les Chetillons’ Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut, Champagne 2008 750ML ($149.95) $136 special, 20 bottles available
Pierre Peters Cuvee Speciale ‘Les Chetillons’ Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut, Champagne 2008 1.5L ($319.95) $299 special, 1 magnum available
Wine Spectator 95 points – Highly Recommended – “This harmonious Champagne offers fine interplay between power and finesse, with ripe poached apricot, rich lemon meringue pie and spun honey flavors married to chalky minerality and focused acidity. The overall impression is elegant and fresh. Drink now through 2030.”
Krug Vintage Brut, Champagne 2003 750ML ($279.95) $199 special, 19 bottles available
Wine Spectator 95 points “Like taffeta in texture, this harmonious Champagne is finely honed and fresh. A wonderfully expressive version, with ample spice and graphite accents to the blackberry pâte de fruit, coffee liqueur, dried apricot, singed orange peel and crystallized honey notes. Hard to stop sipping.”
James Suckling 95 points “A rich nose with deep, ripe chardonnay and pinot noir, red fruits, some dark mushrooms and plenty of grilled nuts, plus caramel, some deep spices, dried citrus, lemon peel and bready aromas. The trademark complexity is here and it freshens with air. The palate is intricately detailed and stitched together like needlework; very precise, very even. The acidity is articulated with some finesse and yet it has much more in terms of phenolics as the leading structural component. The phenolics are rich and ripe, sitting polished and even around immensely concentrated fruit with flavors of peach, nectarine and white cherry. The finish is deep, even and resonant. Drink now but rest assured it will hold for a very long time, just like Krug has proven in other warm years like ’76.”
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 95 points “Light yellow. Powerful, complex bouquet evokes fresh peach, pear, floral honey, green almond and smoky minerals. Deep, palate-staining citrus and orchard fruit flavors show outstanding vivacity for a hot vintage, picking up ginger and talc notes with air. The strikingly long, sappy finish features zesty orange pith, smoky minerals and an echo of honeysuckle. I’d be in no rush to drink this one. Speaking of waiting, I had the chance to revisit the 2000 Vintage Krug and it has begun to pick up the smoky, weighty and nutty character that long-time fans of this producer crave. It’s still plenty young but already unmistakably Krug, with a chewy texture and a sexy floral nuance dominating right now.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points “Soft, supple and delicate in the glass, the 2003 Vintage is super expressive today. Smoke, brioche, apple tart and spice notes flesh out in a resonant, impeccably layered Champagne loaded with personality. I can’t think of a young Krug Champagne that delivers this much pure pleasure at such a young stage in its life. The 2003 has developed nicely since I last tasted it about six months ago. This is class personified.”
R.H. Coutier Grand Cru Brut, Champagne 2008 750ML ($59.95) $46 special
Antonio Galloni 93 points “Coutier’s 2008 Brut Grand Cru is interesting to taste next to the Grands Vintages. Here the brightness, focus and tension of the 2008 vintage are front and center. Lemon peel, white, flowers, mint and chalky notes infuse this bright, finely sculpted Champagne. The interplay of Ambonnay Pinot with Chardonnay, along with the chiseled style of the year adds up a compelling and absolutely delicious bottle of Champagne. I very much like the sense of energy here.”

Here, the richness of Pinot Noir comes through loud and clear in the wine’s depth and overall richness. Creamy and beautifully layered throughout, the 2012 hits all the right notes. Red berry, mint, flowers, sweet spices and candy fill out the wine’s broad frame effortlessly. What a gorgeous wine this is. Simply put, the 2012 is a total knock-out.”

Auslese & Beerenauslese:
Noble German Wines
Perhaps the most unfairly overlooked category of wine today is the nobly sweet dessert wines of Germany. Both Bernauslese and Auslese (especially the multi-starred versions) offer the thing we crave most in sweet wines—brightness and acidity to buffer the sugar and deliver a wine that is refreshing, not cloying. Compared to other classic dessert wines, like Sauternes, Germany sweet Riesling is off the charts in terms of acid levels, which allows them to be refreshing young and also to age like champions.
The other thing we love about them is their price—we’re highlighting a few wines today that are forty years old (forty!!) and a few that can easily become that (lay a few down for your kids, they’ll thank you!) and all of them seem almost silly-cheap when you compare them to wines like Sauternes. J Christoffel Jr has been a classic producer and to see these wines, ex-cellar, at these prices, seems like a deal that can’t stay this good for too much longer. So you might want to get in on it now.

Joel B. Payne –Vinous 92 points “Pale golden yellow. Exalted aromas of papaya, passion fruit and clove. The rich, creamy papaya fruit is laced with a fine saline minerality. Elegant in spite of its depth. But this wine is still quite closed, even austere.”
Weingut Jos. Christoffel Jr. Christoffel-Prum Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Auslese*** GK 2015 750ML ($79.95) $59 special
Mosel Fine Wines 94 points “This proves very delicate and rather restrained on the nose as scents of anise, yellow peach, smoke (bacon) and bergamot emerge from the glass. The wine only really reveals its intensity and complexity on the palate after some airing. Yet the finish is airy, light and pure. This terrify effort should develop into a great subtle Auslese in a decade or two. 2025-2050.”

Xavier Vignon
The Man behind the Curtain
Arriving Friday, January 13th
Few in the Southern Rhône can make wine like Xavier Vignon. Grand Veneur’s 100 Point Châteauneuf-du-Pape VV 2010, along with Raymond Usseglio’s 99 Point Cuvée Impériale 2010: Xavier fashioned both. Having studied at Montpellier’s prestigious winemaking school, and polished his skills in places like Napa, Bordeaux, and Australia, Xavier arrived in Châteauneuf in the late 1990s. Following his success there, and heeding industry advice, he began buying specific barrels from some of his winery clients and blending his own line of wines. The wine world has since thanked Xavier for his contribution, and critics like Robert Parker continuously praise his signature bottlings.
Xavier’s mission remains simple: to showcase, and exalt, the character of the Rhône Valley’s most celebrated appellations. The wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Vacqueyras, and Rasteau, for example, sing in their purest voices under the guidance of Xavier. His intuition and decades of experience as a Rhône winemaker pay off not just in 99-100 points, but likewise in his own brand of wines. We are offering an assortment of Xavier Vignon wines, all in the 90+ point range, at a fraction of what you’d pay for the wines Xavier makes as consultant. Dig deep into the Rhône and you’ll find treasures like these.
Xavier Vignon Wines Arriving January 13th
Xavier Rasteau, Rhone 2012 750ML ($34.95) $28.80 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 93 points “One of my favorite wines from this estate, the 2012 Rasteau offers tons of ripe dark fruit, crushed rock, licorice and minerality in its full-bodied, concentrated profile. Made from 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre, it’s a classic Rasteau to drink over the coming 7-8 years.”
Xavier Vignon Côtes du Rhône S.M. NV 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94 points “The NV Côtes du Rhône S.M. is thrilling stuff. Made from equal parts Grenache and Syrah and aged half in concrete and half in barrel, it offers a full-bodied, voluptuous and decadent style to go with overflowing notes of plum and darker fruits, licorice and violets. Gorgeous on all counts, it’s a shockingly good Côtes du Rhône to drink over the coming 4-6 years, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see it last even longer.”
Xavier Vacqueyras, Rhone 2010 750ML ($31.95) $26 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 91 points “The 2010 Vacqueyras was made from a somewhat unusual blend of 50% Syrah, 30% Mourvedre and 20% Grenache, most of it from the Plateau de Garrigue, near Sarrians in Vacqueyras. This rich effort reveals lots of forest floor, roasted herb, blackberry and cassis notes as well as a hint of acacia flowers. Impeccably pure, rich and long, it should drink well for 6-8 years.”
This is the only listing in the USA today!
Xavier Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Anonyme X 2011 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 95 points “The top wine of the estate, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Anonyme is a hidden gem in the vintage! A blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Counoise and Vaccarese, from 90-year-old vines and aged in one-third new barrels (although you wouldn’t know it), it possesses fabulous notes of blackberry and currant fruit, big minerality, roasted meats and leather. Full-bodied, with beautiful freshness, big tannin and a layered, thrillingly concentrated mid-palate, it will be better in another year or two, and have over 15 years of longevity. Drink 2015-2026.”
This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
The next best price is $73.99
Xavier Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Anonyme X 2012 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 95 points “The top wine from the portfolio, the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Anonyme offers thrilling purity and focus in its lively dark fruits, roasted meats and underbrush-scented bouquet. Full-bodied, ripe and textured, with fantastic polish and sweetness to its tannin, it has a supple, forward feel, yet will easily evolve for 10-15 years.”
Xavier Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2010 750ML ($47.95) $38 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 91+ points “Richer, fuller and denser is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape, which is composed of 65% Grenache and the rest equal parts Mourvedre and Syrah. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by abundant notes of black fruits, licorice, lavender, Provencal herbs as well as a meaty richness.”
This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
The next best price is $45.99
Xavier Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Reserve VII IX X NV 750ML ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 96 points “While I reviewed this NV Châteauneuf du Pape La Reserve VII IX X (a blend from the 2007, 2009 and 2010 vintages) last year, I was able to taste it again this go around, and it still blew me away. Fabulously full-bodied and decadent, with loads of lavender, incense, black raspberry and cured-meat nuances, it’s still youthful and vibrant, with notable freshness and purity. Enjoy this brilliant wine through 2028.”
Also Arriving from the Rhone on January 13th:
Delas Freres Saint-Joseph Francois de Tournon, Rhone 2013 750ML ($44.95) $28 pre-arrival special
Case-6 Delas Freres Saint-Joseph Francois de Tournon, Rhone 2013 750ML (199.95) $149 pre-arrival special (that’s only $24.83/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 92 points “Similar to the Saint Epine release quality-wise, the 2013 St Joseph Cuvee Francois de Tournon offers more richness, breadth and layer compared to the tighter, more focused, granite-influenced Saint Epine. Plum, black raspberry, licorice, cracked pepper and graphite flows to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, structured 2013 that needs 3-4 years of cellaring; it will have two decades of longevity. Coming mostly from vineyards around Tournon and Mauves, it spent 12 months in 30% new French oak.”
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 92 points “Vivid ruby. Highly perfumed, exotic scents of black raspberry and blueberry preserves, incense and smoky minerals carry a spicy topnote. At once ripe and lively on the palate, offering palate-staining red and dark berry and cherry cola flavors and subtle floral character. Finishes spicy and very long, displaying harmonious tannins and a lingering violet note.”
Wine Spectator 92 points “Ripe and concentrated without sacrificing cut, this lets a pure beam of raspberry and blackberry coulis rush forth, backed by mouthwatering anise, black tea and iron notes. Latent grip allows the finish to linger. Best from 2016 through 2022.”

Delas Freres Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes-Marquise de la Tourette, Rhone 2013 750ML ($119.95) Was $79, Now $69, 16 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 points “One of the gems in the vintage is the 2013 Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes, which comes from both the Bessards and Grandes Vignes lieux-dits on Hermitage Hill. Completely destemmed, then vinified in stainless steel and concrete tanks, the wine is aged 18 months in 30% new French oak; it offers terrific notes of dark fruits, graphite and ample minerality in a full-bodied, layered, ripe profile. It’s more approachable than the Les Bessards, yet will still have three decades of longevity.”

The next best price is $84.97
Domaine Antoine Arena ‘BG’ Bianco Gentile, Corsica 2012 750ML ($49.95) Was $24, Now $18, 27 bottles available
Vinopolnote: From a miniscule, half-hectare vineyard of clay and limestone soils planted in the late-90’s. Bianco Gentile is an ancient varietal which Arena had discovered and had genetically tested; the wine is rich, complex, tangy, and broad. Salty sea air and peach fruit qualities make for great concentration and a long, lingering finish – this would be fantastic with rich seafood dishes!
This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
Reynvaan Family Vineyards ‘The Contender’ Syrah – Marsanne, Walla Walla Valley 2014 750ML ($99.95) Was $89, Now $77, 36+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 94-96 points “Checking in as a mix of 94% Syrah and 6% Marsanne, the 2014 Syrah The Contender is another elegant, medium to full-bodied, layered wine from this estate that offers plenty of texture and length. Blackberries, violets, plums, pepper and hints of iron all emerge from this beauty, which can be enjoyed on release or cellared for a decade or more.”
Felsina Berardenga Maestro Raro Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2012 750ML ($59.95) Was $49, Now $44, 32 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 94+ points “Fèlsina’s 2012 Maestro Raro (Cabernet Sauvignon) is a real head-turner, although it is also an infant and in need of considerable cellaring. A bold, dark wine, the 2012 is vivid in the glass, with remarkable detail for such a big wine and exceptional overall balance. The 2012 is sweeping and dramatic in style, with plenty of that year’s exotic fruit and opulence, along with plenty of sweet tobacco, rosemary, sage and cedar notes that add nuance. The 2012 needs time to fully meld together, but it is fabulous, even today.”
