Sine Qua Non Poker Face Syrah, Santa Barbara County 2004 1.5L ($2,199.95) Displayed price: $1,799, Your price: $1,619.10, 1 magnum in stock
Wine Advocate 97 points “Starting off the Syrah-based wines, the 2004 Poker Face (Syrah) is aging beautifully. A blend of 96% Syrah, 2.5% Mourvedre and 1.5% Viognier (from the Eleven Confessions, White Hawk, Alban, Bien Nacido, and Alta Mesa vineyards) that was aged in 80% new French oak, it offers up a perfumed, fresh bouquet of sweet blackberry liqueur, creme de cassis, spring flowers and licorice that gives way to a full-bodied, seamless, gorgeously textured feel on the palate. Rich and decadent, it has notable, yet beautifully integrated acidity and stays remarkably fresh, detailed and even elegant. It still needs a lengthy decant to shine, and will continue to thrill over the coming decade or so.”

Joseph Swan Vineyards Ziegler Vineyard Zinfandel, Russian River Valley 2011 750ML ($31.95) Displayed price: $28, Your price: $25.20, 28 bottles in stock now
Winery note “Tasting notes:  Medium deep garnet color. Aromas of dark berry compote with hints of fig, baking spices and black pepper. In the mouth the aromas are echoed but with a bit more brightness due to its excellent acidity. Still fairly tannic. Decanting and/ or opening a couple of hours ahead of drinking is highly recommended for this young pup!”

Bedrock Wine Co. ‘The Bedrock Heritage’, Sonoma Valley 2015 750ML ($59.95) Displayed price: $49, Your price: $44.10, 14 bottles in stock now
Robert Parker 96 points “Possibly the flagship wine is the 2015 Proprietary Red The Bedrock Heritage. This ancient vineyard is planted with 27 different varieties, so I won’t even begin to list them, as that is a book in itself. This is Rhône Valley-like, with notes of Mediterranean herbs, blackberries, blueberries, loamy soil notes, incense, creosote, steak tartare and pepper followed by a wine of great intensity – built like a skyscraper, with layers of fruit and extraction. It is a sensational effort, super-complex, and best drunk over the next decade.”

Domaine de la Terre Rouge ‘Sentinel Oak Vineyard Pyramid Block’ Syrah, Shenandoah Valley 2013 750ML ($44.95) Displayed price: $38, Your price $34.20, 32 bottles in stock now
Wine Enthusiast 95 points “This gorgeous, concentrated, mouthfilling wine is delicious to sip now but will certainly improve in the cellar for a decade or more. Tempting black cherry and boysenberry flavors seem to swell in the mouth, while light baking-spice and black-pepper accents weave in and out. Even on the finish it keeps surging with dark fruits and spices.”

Cristom Eileen Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2013 375ML ($34.95) $24 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 92 points “Bright red. Tightly wound red berry and Asian spice aromas pick up a suave floral nuance with air. Silky and precise, offering energetic raspberry and bitter cherry flavors with a touch of star anise. A suave, seamless Pinot with no excess weight. Closes tangy and very long, with silky tannins and lingering spiciness.”

Cristom Jessie Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2013 375ML ($34.95) $24 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 92 points “Ruby-red. Highly perfumed scents of dark berries, cola and rose oil. Fleshy, expansive black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors display a suave blend of richness and energy, picking up a spicy character with air. Cristom Marjorie Vineyard Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2013 375ML ($39.95) $27 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 93 points “Brilliant ruby-red. Exotic, highly expressive aromas of raspberry liqueur, Asian spices, cola and smoky minerals, with a suave floral overtone building in the glass. Sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering intense red and dark berry and spicecake flavors given spine by juicy acidity. A distinctly elegant, seamless Pinot Noir with superb finishing energy; the gentle tannins are quickly absorbed by the wine’s vibrant fruit. A standout of its vintage.”

Gramercy Cellars John Lewis Reserve Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2014 750ML ($99.95) $89 special
Wine Advocate 95 points “Notably more fresh and lively than the Lagniappe Syrah, the 2014 Syrah John Lewis is a pretty, perfumed effort that has classic notes of blueberries, spice box, lavender and olives. Medium to full-bodied, structured and tannic, it has nicely integrated acidity, a beautiful mid-palate and a great finish. Forget bottles for 2-3 years and enjoy over the following decade.”

Gramercy Cellars ‘Lower East’ Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley 2014 750ML ($37.95) $27 special
Wine Advocate 91 points “Coming from the Columbia Valley, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Lower East from Gramercy is a polished, classy Cabernet Sauvignon that has lots of spice box, black currants and dried herbs in a supple, rounded, delicious and textured style. It’s ideal for drinking over the coming 5-7 years.”

Gramercy Cellars Lagniappe Syrah, Columbia Valley 2014 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
Wine Advocate 94 points “A big, powerful example of this cuvee, the 2014 Syrah Lagniappe comes from the Red Willow, Forgotten Hills and Minick vineyards and is 100% Syrah. It offers a deep, rich bouquet of smoked herbs, cured meats, blackcurrants and pepper. This is followed by a powerful, tannic red that has full-bodied richness, plenty of mid-palate depth and a big finish. I was surprised by the tannin in this cuvee and it showed quite a bit differently (more fresh and lively) from barrel. Nevertheless, it’s a serious wine that need 2-3 years of bottle age.”

Delamotte Blanc de Blancs Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
Stephen Tanzer 92 points “Very pale greenish-silver color. Extremely fine, precise aromas of talc, mint and fresh herbs. Creamy and round but utterly vibrant; this expands to fill the mouth yet communicates an impression of weightlessness. A blanc de blancs of great delicacy. Finishes very long, youthful and bright.”ST

vinopolis champagnesBereche et Fils Brut Reserve, Champagne NV 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Disgorged January 2017. 2014 Base.
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The NV Brut Réserve from the Bérêche family is a recent disgorgement based on the 2014 vintage. As always, the Brut Réserve is rich, creamy and inviting, all qualities that make it an excellent choice for drinking upon release. That said, the Brut Réserve also has a track record of aging gracefully. Dried pear, hazelnut, spice and dried flowers build into the voluptuous, resonant finish. Bérêche’s Brut Réserve is one of the finest grower Champagnes readers will find in its price range. Dosage is 6 grams per liter.” [Review is for July 2016 disgorgement]

Savart L’Accomplie Premier Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($59.95) $49 special

Vilmart & Cie Grand Cellier Premier Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($89.95) $69 special
Disgorged September 2015
Wine Spectator 93 points “A mouthwatering, seamless Champagne that caresses the palate like raw silk, with vibrant acidity framing rich and finely meshed flavors of nectarine, chopped almond, fleur de sel and honey. Offers a long, chalky finish of lime blossom and spice. Drink now through 2022. 450 cases imported.” [Review is for December 2015 disgorgement]

Crowd pleasing pink!
Chartogne-Taillet Le Rose Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Disgorged May 2017. 6-7g/L. 50% Chardonnay, 50% Pinot Noir. L-SLR013.
Terry Theise note “All 2013, 50-50 CH-PN, with PN from Orizeaux, this is the Champagne most improved under Alexandre, and stands as one of Champagne’s most compelling Rosés. This ’13 has a charming, and I mean charming aroma, his best bottling yet, delicious and silky, substantive yet gauzy, elegant, forthcoming and classy; on the flowery side but not gushing.”

Pierre Gimonnet et Fils Blanc de Blancs Gastronome, Champagne 2010 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
Antonio Galloni 90 points “The 2010 Cuvée Gastronome is a classic Gimonnet Champagne built on tension and energy. Brisk citrus, floral and mineral notes abound in this expressive, mid-weight Champagne. The 2010 is a bit compact and less generous texturally than some of the other wines in this range, but it offers impeccable balance not to mention considerable personality. Fruit sources are Cramant, Chouilly, Oger (all Grand Crus), plus Cuis and Vertus (both 1er Crus). Dosage is 6.5 grams per liter.”

Champagne Hebrart Cuvee Rose Premier Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Disgorged 18 Oct 2016.
Terry Theise note “The assemblage is daunting. 50% CH from Mareuil, vintage 2013. 43.5% PN from Mareuil shared between 2012 and 2011. 6.5% Mareuil PN as still wine vinified in wood, vintage 2012. Deg Oct 2015. This is a tic rounder than last year’s; sports the prettiest fragrance, rose hips and (sweet!) rhubarb; the palate is quite round, more vinous, but with the tiniest scratch of phenolics. As always it’s a wine that seamlessly melds sensuality with cerebrality.”

Domaine Vincent & Sophie Morey Santenay Les Hates, Cote de Beaune 2014 750ML ($34.95) $27 special

Thibault Liger-Belair Richebourg Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits 2013 750ML ($499.95) $399 special
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 95 points “(bottled in late August): Bright, dark red. Delicate, nuanced aromas of wild blueberry, macerated red fruits, crushed rock and exotic flowers. Wonderfully smooth and sweet yet still tight in the mouth, conveying an urgent character to its vibrant crushed raspberry and mineral flavors. Boasts amazing retention of primary berry fruit, but today this wine is even more spectacular on the nose and on the terrific gripping finish, where the noble tannins are thoroughly coated. Offers outstanding subtle length and lift.”

France – Alsace

Agathe Bursin L’As de B, Alsace 2016 750ML ($21.95) $17 special
VinopolNote: This wine comes from the lieu-dit Bollenberg and is made from an assortment of grapes that are interplanted and harvested at the same time. Made from a mix of Riesling, Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, though the exact blend changes depending on the yields in the vintage.  This wine is a delightful representation of all of the things we love about Bursin, at a crazy price for its quality.

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Agathe Bursin Pinot Blanc Parad’Aux, Alsace 2016 750ML ($24.95) $20.90 special
VinopolNote: Classic Alsace Pinot Blanc.  Clean, crisp with nice minerality and a touch of nuttiness.  This would make an excellent aperitif or a smashing pairing with fish.

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Agathe Bursin Muscat Bollenberg, Alsace 2016 750ML ($29.95) $26 special

Agathe Bursin Gewurztraminer Dirstelberg, Alsace 2016 750ML ($27.95) $24 special
Agathe Bursin Pinot Gris Dirstelberg, Alsace 2016 750ML ($27.95) $24 special
Agathe Bursin Riesling Dirstelberg, Alsace 2016 750ML ($26.95) $21.90 special
VinopolNote: The Disrstelberg vineyard is mostly composed of pink sandstone and is known as a high quality vineyard for a variety of grapes.  The wines from the site tend to be linear and crisp, with good varietal character.  Unlike many Alsatian producers, Bursin errs on the side of delicacy and raciness rather than pick too late and allow the wines to become rich and flabby for the sake of “power.”

These are the only listings in the USA today!

Agathe Bursin Sylvaner Lutzeltal, Alsace 2016 750ML ($24.95) $20.90 special
VinopolNote: Bursin is known for Sylvaner and this is her entry-level bottling.  While it lacks the complexity and intensity of the higher-end wines, it offers great value and is wonderful insight into the house style.

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Agathe Bursin Sylvaner Eminence Zinnkoepfle, Alsace Grand Cru 2016 750ML ($39.95) $30.90 special
VinopolNote: Agathe Bursin is known in Alsace as one of the top producers of Sylvaner.  This is one of her top wines and provides a compelling reason to pay attention to the grape.  Aromatically really interesting with a bright, mineral palate and great texture.  This is a wine worth paying attention to.

Italy – Sicily

Gulfi Nerobaronj Sicilia IGT, Sicily 2011 750ML ($37.95) $29 special
Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2011 Nerobaronj flaunts its distinctive style and its impenetrable concentration. This pure expression of Nero d’Avola (that in this vintage is still an IGT wine) offers impressive layers of dark fruit, tar, road paving, Indian spice and barbecue spice. Despite the large impact of those blackish aromas, the wine offers a surprising level of pure fruit as well with blackberry and cherry at the front line. Thick lines and plush richness contribute to the wine’s inner depth and intensity.”

Gulfi Neromaccarj Sicilia IGT, Sicily 2011 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2011 Neromàccarj is the wine that, in my opinion, best encompasses the overall winemaking philosophy at Gulfi. Like the other Nero d’Avola selections presented, this wine boasts a super enriched and concentrated style. On top of black fruit and cherry marmalade, the bouquet offers Teriyaki, barbecue smoke and asphalt-like aromas. Neromàccarj presents a more balanced and complete picture because its large bulk is spread evenly in proportioned elements. In other words, the opulence of the bouquet is perfectly matched to the large footprint left on the finish.”

Spain – Madrid

Bernabeleva Camino de Navaherreros Garnacha, Madrid 2015 750ML ($19.95) $14 special
Case-12 Bernabeleva Camino de Navaherreros Garnacha, Madrid 2015 750ML ($219.95) $149 special (that’s only $12.42/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 90 points “The entry-level red 2015 Camino de Navaherreros is always produced with Garnacha from organically farmed vineyards in the zone of Navaherreros in San Martín de Valdeiglesias. It fermented in stainless steel with some 45% full clusters and aged in 5,000- and 10,000-liter oak vats for nine months. This is a very serious red Garnacha for the price asked, with an herbal touch, faint phenolic twist and no oak whatsoever, as well as a very balanced palate, refined tannins and the austere texture provided by the granite minerality. Very impressive. 33,000 bottles produced.”

Bow & Arrow

New Releases

“This wine is way too easy to drink” –Josh Raynolds, Vinous Media

“…did I mention the cool factor? Sky high.” –Katherine Cole, The Oregonian

bow arrow sauv blancWe can’t say enough good things about Bow & Arrow and the wines they make. Scott Frank seems to have cracked the code to do two things that are nearly impossible for other Oregon wineries. First, he makes always wines that are vibrant, fresh and delicious in a truly old-world fashion. The wines are awesome. There’s a liveliness that we find in the Bow & Arrow wines that can often be lacking from lots of other wines from this state—a zippiness, if you will. As a result, the wines (especially the wines we’re featuring today) can be compulsively drinkable. We may have mentioned this already, but the wines are great.

“Why Loire natural wines?  Scott and Dana found in these wines a palate refreshing, zingy gulp-ability, intellectually intrigue, yet fun, and not too expensive.” –Oregon Wine Fair

The other major puzzle that Scott seems to have cracked is affordability. We often see wines from the US marketed as ‘daily drinkers’ in style but the wines are priced at $30++, well north of a comparable wine from Europe. With Bow & Arrow, though, we’re pleased as punch that a delicious local wine is cheaper than most of the competition from Europe. (and delicious—that’s important, too). Scott Frank’s pricing seems free of ego that can sometimes infect his domestic brethren. And it’s for a great reason, he notes that “For someone entering the wine industry when I did, in the early 2000s… having a deep and meaningful relationship to Burgundy wasn’t possible. At least not for me. I mean, I worked in a grocery store.”

We should mention again that the wines are awesome. Don’t forget that part.

Bow & Arrow Melon Johan Vineyard, Willamette Valley 2015 750ML ($24.95) $18 special
Grapelive 91 points “Inspired by the Loire Valley’s Muscadet Sevre et Maine, the natural and stylish biodynamic Melon de Bourgogne by Bow & Arrow delivers brisk and bright salty flavors with a touch of New World richness, but remains faithful to the French version with driving acidity and steeliness making for a vibrant example of this varietal. Scott Frank’s Portland based micro winery has gained a great reputation for unique and interesting wines taking Bow & Arrow in its own direction, away from the only Burgundy influenced path that most of the Willamette Valley follows. The winery is enjoying success by paying homage to France’s Loire Valley (and especially the Touraine and Muscadet regions) with some stellar Gamay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc wines as well as this pretty, very dry and slightly raw Melon de Bourgogne. Bow & Arrow’s Johan Vineyard Melon starts with an austere nose of saline, ether, crushed earthy stones, straw bale and zesty citrus leading to a pithy palate of lemon/lime, unripe melon and a core of stone fruit, making it a superb seafood companion. Frank’s touch is brilliant here, as with Johan’s fruit giving loads of energy and character. It opens to fleshy peach and kiwi along with some bitter herb and spice offering a fruity vs savory balance. The hint of brioche/lees offers mouth feel and substance. This white impresses for its zip and restraint while still giving texture and layers. The vintage shines through in all of the Bow & Arrow wines. These are wonderful efforts. Don’t miss them, in particular the Gamay/Pinot Rhinestones blend, the Gamay and the straight Pinot Noirs, all of which are standouts. Bow & Arrow’s Melon is a fun and refreshing white that will compliment oysters, clams, mussels as well as raw milk cheeses. It is a great alternative to the sea of less exciting whites out there.”

Case-12 Bow & Arrow Hughes Hollow Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2015 750ML ($419.95) $299 special (that’s only $24.92/bottle!)
VinopolNote: Hughes Hollow is an own-rooted vineyard. Scott Frank works with the Pommard clone of Pinot in the Jory soils. In the 2015 vintage, he used 10% whole cluster. The wine shows savory notes of black tea and freshly turned earth, lightened by aromas of red fruits and green herbs.

VinopolNote: The selection for the Vitae Springs bottling comes from the highest block in the vineyard at an elevation of 800 feet. It was planted to the Pommard clone in 1999. The wine is fresh and inviting, showing a spicy nose with notes of violets, red roses and oolong tea. It has a refreshingly sappy persistence to the finish.

Antoniolo

The Towering Wines of Gattinara

antoniolo gattinara osso san grato 12The Piedmont outside of Barolo and Barbaresco remains a bit of a paradox: lovers of big, collectible Nebbiolo will readily concede that there are some amazing wines made there, but then turn around and proceed never to buy any, despite the fact that the best wines are outstandingly cheap!  Well, hopefully that stops today (at least in a small little way).  We’re here to tell you that if you love Barolo and Barbaresco, you should be paying real (fiscal) attention to the wines made in Piedmont outside of the big two.

The wines we’re focusing on today are from Gattinara (which is one of the two or three best known regions outside of Barolo/Barbaresco).  The big advantage this region has right now is the changing climate.  In an older climate paradigm, you couldn’t always count on the northerly regions in the Piedmont to get fully ripe every year, so often you had very light wines with very stern tannins.  Now? It’s like Gattinara and Co. have hit the jackpot.

The wines of Gattinara tend to be more compact and more aromatic than Barolo (Volnay vs Nuits, in Burgundy, is a good comparison).  They age forever, it seems, but with a good decant you shouldn’t have any problem drinking the wines now (or at least from the lower tier).  The best part?  The prices.  We’re offering wines here that are between $30-60 and you’re probably saving 30-50% vs. a wine of comparable quality that has the Barolo tag (and the branding behind it). Sure you don’t get to brag about the Barolo you bought, but if you’re in it for the wines themselves, this is where you want to be.

Antoniolo remains the flagship producer of Gattinara, the winery by which others in the region are judged.  We’ve got a selection of the 2012’s just in—a great Piedmont vintage by any stretch and one where Antoniolo excelled.  These are some great wines that are going to make you, and whomever you share them with, very happy.

New Arrivals from Antoniolo

Antoniolo Bricco Lorella Rosato Coste della Sesia, Piedmont 2016 750ML ($21.95) $18 special
Ian D’Agata–Vinous 90 points “Bright pink. Perfumed floral very dainty nose of violet, redcurrant and sweet spices. Enters fresh and vibrant, then richer and deeper in the middle, with red fruit and floral flavors that have a slightly medicinal cast. Finishes long, with good size and weight and lingering perfume. An especially good Bricco Lorella this year.”

Antoniolo San Francesco, Gattinara DOCG 2012 750ML ($79.95) $69 special
Wine Advocate 91 points “This is a special wine with its own cult following. The 2012 Gattinara San Francesco stands apart for its apparent fruit intensity and the extra density and richness that it so generously offers to the palate. Dark cherry and blackberry drive a long and exuberant finish.”

Antoniolo Gattinara DOCG, Piedmont 2011 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni 91 points “The 2011 Gattinara is surprisingly intense for an entry-level bottling. Dark, powerful and voluptuous – almost unnaturally so for the appellation – the 2011 exudes richness. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco and menthol are front and center in this super-expressive, inviting Gattinara from Antoniolo. Readers should expect a bold, racy style in 2011.”

Antoniolo Vigneto Castelle, Gattinara DOCG 2011 750ML ($54.95) $44 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 90 points “Enticing aromas of cherry, rose, licorice and tar give way to stony, mineral elements that define this red, which is firm yet long and mouthwatering, with the mineral depths echoing on the lingering finish.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!

Antoniolo ‘Osso San Grato’, Gattinara DOCG 2011 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 14 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 93 points “An austere, chalky style, whose linear profile binds cherry, tomato leaf, loam and tea flavors together. Aeration coaxes out more fruit and harmony, but this is more reticent than some peers, with a long, mineral finish.”
Doctorwine 94 points “Harvest this year came early due to an alternating climate that saw a hot spring followed by a cool and rainy June, a normal July and a dry and very hot August. Overall the vintage was considered good but the estate did not consider a classic one. The wine has a transparent, ruby-garnet color with particularly luminous fuchsia reflections. The bouquet has finesse with scents of violet, rose, apricot, licorice, mint and a pinch of chalk. The tannins in the mouthfeel are compact yet sweet and perhaps are a bit too settled for a young top Gattinara. The finish is modulated. A wine of the finest quality and unbridled drinkability.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Antoniolo San Francesco, Gattinara DOCG 2011 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 22 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 92 points “With a core of sweet fruit notes, this red combines cherry, berry, tomato leaf and stone aromas and flavors. Remains balanced and long, evolving from cherry to mineral on the long finish.”

Stock up for when you have family and friends hanging out in the kitchen for a convivial cook-off. The warm 2015 vintage was very kind to Montevertine thanks to its cooler vineyard sites in the high hills of Radda in Chianti. The entry-level Pian del Ciampolo represents a second selection of fruit with the best fruit dedicated to Le Pergole Torte. (Now there’s a wine I can’t wait to taste.) It is mostly Sangiovese with smaller parts Colorino and Canaiolo. It is fermented with ambient yeasts in cement vats, later to age in large oak cask for one year. The wine opens to a darkly saturated color and evident richness. Martino Manetti says his wines show a little more alcoholic power in this vintage compared to his neighbors. Ripe fruit flavors taper out on the finish to conclude with elegant tones of dusty mineral. This is a great deal from Tuscany.”

New Review from Grapelive

love and squalor pn 14Love & Squalor Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2014 750ML ($27.95) $24 special
Grapelive 92 points “This beautiful and lushly textured Oregon Pinot has pretty detail and satiny mouth feel highlighting the vintage and terroir very well. All this in a wine that costs under $25. I am thrilled with this Love & Squalor Pinot made by Portland Wine Company and certainly will be following this winery in the future. Winemaker Matt Berson’s tiny micro winery in Portland is making artful and fruit forward wines with great charm and personality. They are lively and vibrant too with balanced grace, the Willamette Valley Pinot especially. Berson has made wines around the world in places like New Zealand, Napa Valley, Germany and Argentina and he shows his travelled view well in his wines… This 2014 Willamette Valley Love & Squalor Pinot was aged 18 months in seasoned French barrique(s) allowing for lovely softness without losing its inner energy and without a shock of sweet toast, but with subtle oak shadings making this a pleasing medium bodied wine a joyous experience. Starting with floral notes and mineral tones, the 2014 has a beautiful ruby/garnet color and a deep fruit core showing black cherry, plum and framboise as well as fig paste, nutmeg, dried violets, red spices, flinty gravel, faint saline, herbal tea and a touch of cola/sassafras. This Pinot is full of fruit and texture offering exciting layers while still being easy to understand and enjoy. Best to drink this fun and stylish wine over the next 2 to 5 years.”

2008 Produttori Crus

Every great band starts in a garage, but what about wineries? Produttori del Barbaresco, for one, produced its first three vintages in the basement of a church. Unlike most rock n’ roll stories, however, this began with a priest and a dream.

It all began in 1958, and the project linked the efforts of nineteen small winegrowers with the intention of making quality wines while ensuring each of the growers could stay maintain control of their land while earning a living wage. This undertaking has grown to include 52 members who occupy over 100 hectares, producing single-vineyard cuvees from nine premier vineyards: Asili, Montefico, Montestefano, Muncagota, Ovello, Pajè, Pora, Rabajà, and Rio Sordo.

The aim of Produttori has been to communicate the individual terroir of a given place from vintage to vintage; prolonged aging and traditional winemaking has lent the domaine a reputation for both consistency and quality.

Twenty years from now, we’ll be looking back at cooler vintages like 2008 with nostalgia. Cool years always seem to pick up the label “a winemaker’s vintage” because the vintage can only be ‘saved’ by a skilled winemaker. Yet, many other producers whisper that they prefer these more classic, cool-climate, Burgundian-style wines these years can produce (exhibit A: Oregon). Antonio Galloni even hangs a lantern on it when he writes “The 2008 Barbarescos are medium in body, with excellent length, focus and cut. It is a relatively high-acidity vintage that producers like to refer to as ‘classic.’” So why do the makers prefer it? Is it simply the challenge? No. Are they all acid freaks? Hardly.  Could it be the wines are simply something you’d want to drink?

Whichever camp you fall into, you can be certain that wines from the historic and masterful Produttori del Barbaresco cooperative are some of the finest of the region (and one of the finest cooperatives in the world). Antonio Galloni certainly agrees!

Produttori del Barbaresco Asili, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($89.95) $79 special
Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Asili, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($999.95) $849 special (that’s only $70.75/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 96 points “One of the absolute highlights in this portfolio of utterly amazing wines, the 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Asili possesses marvelous depth and richness, but also little of the early approachability and sexiness of Asili. With time in the glass, the wine’s inner perfume gradually emerges, but ultimately this is a Barbaresco to bury in the deepest corner of the cellar. Once again, the Produttori have done a fabulous job with the Asili. The 2008 has nerves of steel and a huge, never-ending finish. It is by far the most imposing and structured Asili I have ever tasted from the Produttori. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.” AG

Produttori del Barbaresco Montefico, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Montefico, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($789.95) $649 special (that’s only $54.08/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico hits the palate with a blast of fruit intermingled with copious acidity and pure structure. Montefico shares a boundary with Ovello, and shows many of the structural elements typically associated with that side, but with more depth in its fruit, probably because of the southern exposure. The high altitude of these parcels ensures there is plenty of freshness and vibrancy. The Montefico is dazzling, but it will require considerable patience. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2048” AG

Produttori del Barbaresco Montestefano, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Montestefano, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($749.95) $649 special (that’s only $54.08/bottle and the lowest listed price in the USA today!)
Antonio Galloni 95+ points “The 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is exquisite and harmonious from start to finish. Among the more structured 2008s, the Montestefano is the wine that most hides its tannin, as the fruit is intensely perfumed, rich and totally seductive. Today the Montestefano provides the illusion of being relatively accessible, but it is virtually certain to shut down in bottle. The 2008 boasts striking aromatics, seemingly endless layers of fruit and power to burn. Readers can think of the Montestefano as a synthesis of Montefico, Ovello and Rabajà. Not bad, to say the least.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Pora, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($69.95) $59 special
Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Pora, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($749.95) $649 special (that’s only $54.08/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 95 points “Playing true to type, the 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is another of the more open wines in this vintage. But that is only in relative terms. Layers of expressive red fruit, crushed flowers and spices flesh out in this radiant Barbaresco. In most vintages the Pora is one of the more accessible of the Riservas when young. The close proximity of the vineyard to the Tanaro River results in a warm microclimate that ripens the fruit earlier than elsewhere. In 2008, though, the Pora packs a serious punch. The coolness of the late harvest comes through in a finish laced with considerable tension and minerality. This is easily one of the very best Poras I have ever tasted from the Produttori. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.” AG

Produttori del Barbaresco Rabaja, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($119.95) $89 special
Produttori del Barbaresco Rabaja, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 1.5L ($219.95) $199 special
Case-12 Produttori del Barbaresco Rabaja, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($1199.95) $949 special (that’s only $79.08/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 96+ points “The 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Rabaja is utterly magnificent in this vintage. Usually a powerhouse, the 2008 is incredibly refined to the point it seems to literally hover on the palate. It is a wine of exquisite grace and beauty. All the elements are in place. I could describe the aromas and flavors, but that would be doing this majestic Barbaresco a huge disservice. Ultimately, the 2008 Rabaja, is all about textural finesse and pure elegance. This is another breathtaking wine from the Produttori. A king among kings. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048”

Library Releases Arriving in October:

Produttori del Barbaresco Muncagota, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is arguably the most open and expressive of the 2008 Riservas. It presents a gorgeous soft core of fruit to match an open personality. Although I wouldn’t suggest opening any of the 2008 Riservas for pleasure anytime soon, readers who want to get an early look at the wines should start with the Muncagota. Sweet rose petals add nuance to the vibrant fruit on the structured finish. This is a great showing from the Muncagota. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2038.” WA

Produttori del Barbaresco Paje, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Paje wraps around the palate with layers of dark fruit, spices and menthol. Today, the Paje is one of the more open of the 2008 Riservas, but there is plenty going on in the glass. Sweet floral and spiced notes add lift on the finish. As good as the Paje is, it also tends to shut down quickly in the glass. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.” WA

Mags of German Riesling

Arriving Wednesday, October 4th

Reichsrat von Buhl Forster Musenhang Riesling, Pfalz 2015 1.5L ($79.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 92 points “The intensely citrus-yellow 2015 Forster Musenhang Riesling shows a clear, aromatic, and slightly flinty nose with ripe pip fruit and refreshing lemon; there are even green paprika and apple flavors on the intense and elegant nose. This Musenhang is medium-bodied, clear, fresh and racy on the palate. It is a straight and mineral, edgy and merciless Riesling with no ornaments, no meat and no charm. But it does have a lot of freshness, raciness and character. This is probably not a wine for the U.S. market, whereas Vikings would probably die for it. Great finesse and purity here, this is an old-school Riesling from the pre-global warming area. Some would say it is unripe, while other would say it’s just ripe. I’d say: the ripeness is at maximum, but I like it due to its refreshing and mineral expression. This Riesling is 12.5% alcohol.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Reichsrat von Buhl Forster Riesling, Pfalz 2015 1.5L ($69.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 92 points “The citrus/golden-colored 2015 Forster Riesling is dense, clear and aromatic on the nose and shows flinty aromas along with ripe Riesling flavors. Very vital and pure on the palate, the wine reveals a great grip and tension. Its power comes from the depth, not from the alcohol. The finish is long, complex and very salty, revealing a pure, concentrated and firmly-structured baby Riesling. This has great expression and talents. The finish and aftertaste reveal some refreshing white and lemony aromas; it does not have the rich and opulent stone fruit flavor you often find in Pfalz, as well as in Forst Rieslings. The finish is long, pure, salty and enormously vital.”

This is the only listing in the USA today for the magnum!

Reichsrat von Buhl Deidesheimer Leinhohle Riesling, Pfalz 2015 1.5L ($79.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 91 points “The golden/yellow-colored 2015 Deidesheimer Leinhöhle Riesling (AP 1416) has an intense nose with pretty ripe, but also refreshing and slightly greenish fruit aromas with sur-lie characteristics. Round and elegant on the palate, this is a balanced, fruit-intense and well-structured Riesling with nice concentration and a long, intense finish. Pretty accessible already, but also with tension. This is a very well-made Riesling from a warmer terroir in a warm vintage. The acidity is ripe and well integrated, and the creamy texture and long lees aging make this a pretty Burgundian Riesling, with 13.5% alcohol.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Reichsrat von Buhl Deidesheimer Maushohle Riesling, Pfalz 2015 1.5L ($89.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2015 Deidesheimer Mäusehöhle Riesling (AP 2216) opens with a pure and refreshing, rather coolish aroma (compared to the Leinshöhle) of ripe yellow fruits intertwined with stony aromas. Round, fresh and elegant on the palate, this full-bodied and well-balanced Riesling is tightly woven, but fine and very mineral. It displays ripe yellow apple flavors in the finish, as well as nice and stimulating grip. The finish is pure and salty, really vitalizing in its freshness and clarity. According to the label, this is 12.5% alcohol.”

This is the only listing in the USA today for the magnum!

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese, Mosel 2015 1.5L ($179.95) $149 pre-arrival special
Mosel Fine Wines 94 points “This Auslese harvested at 102° Oechsle is still marked by some residual notes from spontaneous fermentation at first. However, these quickly give way to exotic scents of mango and papaya as well as mint, candied grapefruit and pineapple. The wine proves juicy and creamy even if still on the sweet side on the palate at this early stage. However, the finish already hints at greatness to come as grapefruit zest brings freshness in the long finish of this superb Auslese from the Scharzhofberg.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Weingut Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese GK, Mosel 2015 1.5L ($79.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96-97 points “The 2015 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese (Golden Capsule) displays the herbal bouquet of the Kabinett but is certainly more deep, concentrated and complex. The wine has great finesse on the palate, and its crystalline acidity and lingering salinity carry the perfectly ripe and lush fruit to a long, vibrating and mouth-watering finish. This Spätlese is highly finessed and complex and—along with the 2015 Scharzhofberger—probably the finest Spätlese I have tasted from the vintage.”’

Cali Cabs – New Releases & Cellar Selections

Ramey Pedregal Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville 2013 750ML ($199.95) $159 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 95 points “The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal Vineyard has turned out beautifully. It is also much more accessible young than I expected, despite its considerable size. Bright red stone fruit and pomegranate notes are pushed forward. There is plenty of tannin, but it is nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. There is plenty of stuffing and potential here.”

The average price nationally is $184

Beringer Vineyards Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2009 750ML ($149.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is a beautifully balanced wine. Firm yet well-integrated tannins frame a core of dark red berries, flowers, mint, spices and licorice. The Reserve shows lovely inner perfume and mid-palate juiciness. It should drink well with a minimum of cellaring. The main vineyards in the 2009 are Home (37%), Lampyridae (23%), Vogt (14%), Chabot (11%) and Rancho del Oso (9%). Each lot was aged separately for about two years before the final blend was assembled.”

Beringer Vineyards Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($149.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Robert Parker 96 points “Revealing the great blending skills of Beringer’s winemaking team, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is a winner. Having purchased Private Reserves for many years, I can attest that they age incredibly well. The 1991, one of the great successes of that vintage, is still aging beautifully at nearly 25 years of age. The sensational 2012 (10,000 cases) boasts an opaque purple color along with abundant aromas of charcoal, burning embers, cr?me de cassis, chocolate, blackberries and licorice. The long, complex, compelling, full-bodied texture along with terrific purity and a savory, rich mouthfeel result in a classic, quintessential Napa Cabernet Sauvignon to drink now and over the next 20-25 years.”

BV Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Robert Parker 94 points “The deep ruby/purple-colored 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour is BV’s flagship wine. It boasts sweet notes of charcoal, burning embers, vanillin, tar and copious quantities of blackcurrant fruit. In keeping with this generously endowed vintage, the wine is supple, full-bodied, multidimensional and opulent. It will drink beautifully young and last for 20-25 years.”

BV Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Case-6 BV Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($619.95) $559 pre-arrival special (that’s only $93.17/bottle!)
Robert Parker 95+ points “One of the two flagship cuvées, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour is a fabulous wine. Obviously, this is the one wine that received the most meticulous attention from their outside consultant Michel Rolland. A great effort in 2013, as one might expect in this vintage, this wine needs 5-6 years and seems capable of lasting 30-40 or more, given the history of the great BV Private Reserves. Inky purple to the rim, with an extraordinary nose of créme de cassis and kirsch, licorice, cedarwood, and a touch of underbrush, the wine hits the palate with a full-bodied, powerful, concentrated, dense style, has great acidity, moderately sweet tannin, and a long, long finish. This wine is young and still slightly unformed, but loaded with potential and upside. Forget it for 5-6 years and drink it over the following half-century.”

Bonus 96 Point Cab!

Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet – Shiraz, South Australia 2014 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 96 points “This has some real poise and depth in the glass; it’s inky dark and deeply colored. The fruits are in the boysenberry, blackberry, plum and blueberry spectrum, and there’s plenty of black tea as well as hints of bergamot. It’s wine with a wealth of oak-derived spices and a coal, smoky, savory edge. The palate’s plush and ripe, opening out over fleshy dark-fruit flavors in a soft and charming mode. It then charges up with plenty of rich, ripe tannin and remains long and saturated through the finish. Balanced and rich, it’s really satisfying, holding succulent and on point. Best from 2020 and for more than a decade after that. This is a great 389. A 53%/47% split in 2014: sourced from Barossa Valley, Wrattonbully, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra.”

Bereche et Fils Brut Reserve, Champagne NV 750ML ($49.95) $39 special

Case-12 Arlaux Grande Cuvee Premier Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($479.95) $359 pre-arrival special (that’s only $29.92/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 92 points “The nose of this wine seduces you straight away with a great balance of autolytic and fruit aromas: toasted hazelnuts, warm apple tart and kaya (coconut and egg) jam. The palate is equally well balanced providing plenty of evolved fruit and toasty / yeasty flavors. Small, fine bubbles, seamless use of dosage and a long nutty finish. This fine if relatively unknown Brut NV takes first place in the derby – a shocker even for me!”
Importer notes: “Arlaux is a small family-run champagne house producing only 5,000 cases a year located in a small village on the Petit Montagne de Reims called Vrigny.  Arlaux has been producing champagne since 1826 but the Arlaux-Marchal family have lived in Vrigny since the 13th century.
