Stephen Tanzer 91 points “Bright straw. Pungent aromas of Meyer lemon, pear and fig, with a gingery accent adding lift. Sappy, penetrating citrus fruit and floral flavors are given a refreshingly bitter character by notes of pear skin and peach pit, with a waxy note coming up on the back half. A smoky nuance lingers on the finish, which shows very good clarity and length.”

Reynvaan Syrah The Contender Walla Walla Valley 2012 ($119.95) $99 special
Wine Advocate 96-98 points “The 2012 Contender is just another incredible effort from this estate. A big, full-bodied, layered, decadent and exotic Syrah, it gives up loads of blackberry, plum, earth, cracked pepper and assorted bacon/meaty qualities that continue to change and evolve in the glass. Incorporating 3% Marsanne, it has the texture and balance to shine on release, yet will have no problems over the following decade either.”
Reynvaan Syrah Foothills Reserve Walla Walla Valley 2012 ($99.95) $89 special
Wine Advocate 96 points “Certainly one of the wines of the vintage, the 2012 Foothills Reserve offers additional pepper, earthy minerality, olive tapenade and cured meats in its masculine, full-bodied and layered personality. Blossoming in the glass, it’s unfortunate that there’s a scant 200 cases of this beauty to go around. Nevertheless, it has awesome purity, excellent mid-palate depth and beautiful focus and precision on the finish. Give it 1 to 2 years in the cellar and drink bottles through 2027.”
Reynvaan Syrah In The Hills Walla Walla Valley 2012 ($99.95) $89 special
Wine Advocate 95+ points “Starting first with the wines already in bottle, the new 2012 Syrah In The Hills is another northern Rhone styled effort that’s co-fermented with 10% Viognier and 15-30% whole cluster. Coming from the Foothills in the Sun vineyard located around the estate, it gives up a fantastic, Cote-Rotie like bouquet of bacon fat, violets, pepper and olives to go with a core of sweet black raspberry styled fruit. Medium to full-bodied, layered, seamless and beautifully concentrated, with fine tannin, it’s a knockout effort to enjoy over the coming 12 to 15 years.”
Reynvaan Syrah InThe Rocks Walla Walla Valley 2012 ($99.95) $89 special
Wine Advocate 95-97 points “Including just a smidge (2%) of Viognier in 2012, the 2012 In The Rocks gives up lovely aromas and flavors of violets, wild flowers, smoke and assorted purple-styled fruits to go with a chewy, rich and beautifully textured profile on the palate. Staying remarkably fresh and elegant, it should be enjoyable on release and shine over the following decade or so.”
CALIFORNIA

Hall Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2012 ($59.95) $49 special
Antonio Galloni 88-90 points “Hall’s 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is laced with attractive plum, mocha, licorice, spices and menthol notes. This juicy, highly expressive Cabernet Sauvignon is shaping up beautifully. It should drink well pretty much upon release.”
Ramey Wine Cellars Claret Napa Valley 2012 ($41.95) $36 special
Robert Parker 90-92 points “The 2012 Claret appears to be another outstanding example of value-priced Cabernet Sauvignon. A 6,000-case blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and the rest Malbec, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, consumers will love this beauty because of its forward, classic Cabernet style. It should drink well for 5-8 years.”
Kapcsandy Roberta’s Reserve Napa Red 2008 ($599.95) $499 special
Robert Parker 99 points “The 2008 Robertas Reserve State Lane Vineyard is virtually perfect. This offering is just as strong as the 2007, but slightly more forward and irresistible than the backward 2007. It boasts a dense inky/purple color as well as an extraordinary nose of blackberry liqueur intermixed with cocoa, forest floor, graphite and subtle hints of smoke as well as camphor. The wine reveals fresh acids, laser-like precision and an extraordinary plump, fleshy mouthfeel. Already approachable, it should evolve for 20-25 years.”

Taittinger Champagne Brut La Francaise NV 375ml ($31.95) $24 special
Wine Spectator 90 points “Subtle overall, offering a creamy mousse and a pleasing juiciness to the notes of apricot tart, slivered almond, orchard blossom and apple. Drink now.”
Stephen Tanzer 90 points “Light gold. Ripe pit fruits, orange pith and toasty lees on the nose. Toasty and velvety in texture, offering ripe nectarine and poached pear flavors with a bracing kick of bitter citrus zest. Finishes sappy and long, with lingering smokiness and a touch of sweet butter.”
Vinopolnotes– This is the lowest listed price in the USA! The average listed price is 20% higher at $29.50 / 375ml bottle
Andre Clouet Champagne Brut Millesime 2008 ($69.95) $59 special
Antonio Galloni 92 points “Clouet’s 2008 Brut Millesime shows quite a bit more tension and focus than the 2007, hardly a surprise given then personality of the vintage. Bright, saline notes frame expressive red fruits, flowers and sweet spices. The 2008 Brut is a gorgeous wine with plenty of appeal today, but it will also develop beautifully in bottle. Stylistically it is less overt than the 2007 but places more emphasis on length. Brut Millesime is mostly Pinot, with 30-40% Chardonnay.”
Vinopolnotes– This is the lowest listed price in the USA!
Andre Clouet Champagne Brut Cuvee 1911 NV ($99.95) $89 special
Antonio Galloni 93+ points “The NV Grand Cru Cuvee 1911 emerges from the glass with the most haunting of perfumes. Sweet rose petal and jasmine are some of the nuances that emerge over time. Despite recent disgorgement, the purity of the fruit and the extraordinary elegance of the mousse are hard to miss. This is an exceptional, elegant version of the 1911 that should drink beautifully for years to come. The bottle I tasted needed quite a bit of air to open up, so readers should be patient with the wine at this stage.”

PY Colin-Morey Santenay Ceps Centenaires 2012 ($59.95) $49 special
PY Colin-Morey St Aubin Les Champlots Premier Cru 2012 ($79.95) $69 special
Stephen Tanzer 89 points “Healthy pale yellow. Restrained aromas of lemon and spices. Less fat and more gripping than the Banc, delivering very good precision and intensity to the mineral and spice flavors. This very well-balanced Saint-Aubin finishes with enticing lemony cut and plenty of personality. (Incidentally, Colin bottled his Saint-Aubin wines last November, and the rest of the 2012s in April of this year.)”
PY Colin-Morey Meursault Les Narvaux 2012 ($99.95) $79 special
Burghound 87-90 points “Even though this is quite strongly reduced the underlying fruit seems cooler and less evidently ripe compared to the nose of the Caillerets. The clean, intense and highly energetic middle weight flavors exude a fine minerality on the saline-inflected finish that offers good length but much less overall depth.”
PY Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ancegnieres 2012 ($99.95) $79 special
Burghound 88-91 points “Strong sulfur-based aromas presently dominate the nose. By contrast there is a lovely sense of purity to the broad-shouldered and robust medium weight flavors that brim with dry extract on the very generously proportioned, long and well-balanced finish. This is a big wine by the typical standards of villages level wines and one that should also be approachable after only a few years of bottle age.”
PY Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Baudines Blanc Premier Cru 2012 ($119.95) $99 special
Burghound 90-92 points “Strong reduction renders the nose unreadable at present. There is outstanding detail and punch to the intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess very good mid-palate concentration as well as excellent length on the balanced and refined finish. Textbook Baudines.”
PY Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes Premier Cru 2012 ($149.95) $119 special
Wine Advocate 91-93 points “The 2012 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Chenevotte has a lovely openness and airiness on the nose that is in contrast to the Les Champs Gain. The palate is lively and energetic on the entry with a racy citric thread and a wonderful saline note on the persistent finish. There is great potential here.”
PY Colin-Morey Meursault Charmes Premier Cru 2012 750ML ($179.95) $149 special
PY Colin-Morey Meursault Charmes Premier Cru 2012 1.5 LITER ($379.95) $319 special
Burghound 90-93 points “Once again there is that pungent combination of petrol and reduction dominating the nose. The beguilingly textured and extract-rich medium weight flavors possess superb depth on the balanced and strikingly persistent finish. This is really very good and I especially like the refinement and overall sense of harmony.”
PY Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets Premier Cru 2012 ($219.95) $179 special
Wine Advocate 91-93 points “The 2012 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets has a perfumed floral bouquet with touches of dried quince emerging with aeration coupled with dried honey and nettle. The palate is very well-balanced with a slightly peppery opening. It is very well-balanced and demonstrates superb transparency and weightlessness, yet the finish is very intense with that marine character coming through.”
Burghound 90-92 points –OUTSTANDING–“There is enough reduction to suppress the fruit but it seems clear that this is riper than the Baudines. There is more size, weight and richness to the tautly muscular medium weight flavors that also exude a fine minerality on the clean and dry finish that is almost as refined as that of the Baudines. This too is lovely.”
PY Colin-Morey Meursault Perrieres Premier Cru 2012 ($249.95) $199 special
Wine Advocate 92-94 points “The 2012 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrieres has a classy bouquet with that minerality brought immediately to the forefront. It is very well-defined and focused. The palate is very well-balanced with a lovely line of acidity cutting like a knife through butter across the swath of vibrant, citrus fruit before finishing again with feisty, spicy notes that urge you to take another sip. Very classy.”
PY Colin-Morey Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2012 ($249.95) $219 special
Burghound 91-93 points “Once again reduction flattens the fruit and renders the nose difficult to evaluate. There is excellent richness and superb volume to the muscular and quite fleshy middle weight plus flavors that display plenty of stoniness on the very rich and mouth coating finish. This is a big wine even by the typically full-sized standards of the appellation yet there is no sense of heaviness or lack of vibrancy.”
PY Colin-Morey Batard Montrachet Grand Cru 2012 ($549.95) $499 special
Wine Advocate 94-96 points “The 2012 Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru might turn out to be Pierre-Yves Colin’s finest achievement in 2012–including the Chevalier-Montrachet. It already offers a very expressive and lively bouquet with ebullient aniseed scents soaring from the glass, all with super delineation. The palate is medium-bodied, vibrant with hints of lemongrass and ginger. This Batard is very intense and concentrated for what is habitually a reticent Grand Cru in its youth, while the finish soars away. This is a grand cru revving up on the starting line. Climb on board.”
Burghound 91-94 points “There is a deft but visible application of wood setting off strong reductive notes. There is excellent power and concentration to the mouth coating and extract-rich broad-shouldered flavors that possess more refinement than the Corton-Charlemagne along with outstanding length on the balanced finish. This should be accessible after 5 years or so of bottle age but should reward up to a decade’s worth.”
PY Colin-Morey Le Montrachet Grand Cru 2012 ($1199.95) $999 special
Vinopolnotes- The Montrachet vineyard is the jewel in the crown of Burgundy’s white wines. It is one of five Grand Cru sites (climats) located in a cluster around the Mont-Rachet hill above Puligny-Montrachet. These vineyards produce some of the most expensive and rare wines in the world, often regarded as the ultimate expression of the Chardonnay grape variety, Colin-Morey produces expressive wines from this vineyard in small quantities every vintage.
Domaine Henri Gouges Bourgogne Blanc 2012 ($37.95) $29 special
Antonio Galloni 88 points “The 2012 Bourgogne Pinot Blanc is gorgeous in this vintage. White flowers, white peaches, lemon and mint all take shape in the glass. The flavors are bright and focused, but texturally the wine is pretty, supple and very nicely put together. The style is high-toned and aromatically expressive, which is quite typical of whites from the Hautes Côtes de Nuits.”
Domaine Henri Gouges Bourgogne Rouge 2012 ($39.95) $33 special
Antonio Galloni 88 points “Gouge’s 2012 Bourgogne shimmers on the palate with gorgeous freshness and cut. Sweet red cherries, mint and spices wrap around the palate in an inviting, layered wine to drink over the next few years.”

Domaine Henri Gouges Clos des Porrets Monopole, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2012 ($99.95) $89 special
Antonio Galloni 92-94+ points “The 2012 Nuits St. Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges is beautifully round and supple. Here the fruit is distinctly red-toned, with hints of iron, earthiness, smoke and tobacco that add complexity. The 2012 will be highly appealing young because of its pure density, but it also appears to have the stuffing to age well for a number of years. This is a great showing from Gouges.”
Domaine Henri Gouges Les Vaucrains, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2012 ($169.95) $149 special
Antonio Galloni 95-97 points “The 2012 Nuits St. Georges Les Vaucrains explodes onto the palate with a heady melange of dark red berries, freshly cut roses, cinnamon and new leather. The tannins are there, but they are nearly buried by the intensity of the fruit. The sheer luxuriousness of the fruit will tempt readers early, but those who can wait will be rewarded with an extraordinary Burgundy. This is a great showing.”
Domaine Henri Gouges Les Saint-Georges, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2012 ($219.95) $199 special
Antonio Galloni 95-97+ points “A dark, brooding wine, the 2012 Nuits St. Georges Les Saint-Georges boasts stunning depth, power and richness. Smoke, black fruit, tar, tobacco, licorice and menthol all take shape in the glass. The 2012 is classic Saint Georges; explosive, tannic and built for the long haul. Cloves, menthol, licorice and plums reappear on the huge, enveloping finish. Readers who can find the 2012 should not hesitate. It is a gem of a wine.”
Louis Boillot Gevrey-Chambertin 2012 ($59.95) $49 special
Stephen Tanzer & Burghound 89-91 points “Good bright red. Lively aromas of red cherry, raspberry and menthol; this smells juicy! Suave, sweet and pure on the palate; creamy but vibrant, with red fruit and floral flavors complicated by a mineral nuance. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and lovely floral persistence. Very ripe but without any surmaturite.”ST
Louis Boillot Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles 2012 ($89.95) $79 special
Stephen Tanzer 91-93 points “Bright, deep red. Superripe red cherry and raspberry flavors show an almost liqueur-like quality yet retain good verve. Fat, plump and sweet; a red fruit bomb in the mouth but enlivened by mineral and floral nuances. Finishes with big but sweet tannins and excellent mineral persistence. For such a ripe wine, this is remarkably juicy and balanced. The yield here was 30 hectoliters per hectare, as the later flowering resulted in less coulure.”
Vinopolnotes– This is the lowest listed price in the USA!
Louis Boillot Volnay Les Grands Poisots 2012 ($59.95) $49 special
Burghound 89-91 points “An ultra-elegant nose of plum, violet and black cherry complements the equally refined and pure middle weight flavors that exude a fine minerality on the precision and vibrant finish. This is firm without being aggressive thanks to the fine grain of the tannins that make themselves felt on the mildly austere finale. Outstanding top value.”
Louis Boillot Volnay Les Angles Premier Cru 2012 ($89.95) $79 special
Stephen Tanzer 90-92 points “(the crop was cut 60% by hail, according to Boillot): Bright red with ruby tones. Tight nose hints at black cherry and dark chocolate. Intensely flavored and high-pitched, with noteworthy purity to its flavors of black cherry, black raspberry and licorice. Boasts a supple texture but this will need time in bottle to open. Finishes with firm tannins, a hint of saline minerality and excellent fruit-driven length.”
Burghound 89-92 points “A complex and agreeably ripe nose mixes notes of red and black pinot fruit liqueur and soft earth aromas. There is good verve and a lovely minerality to the caressing and pure medium weight flavors that possess a sufficient quantity of dry extract to impart a dusty and mouth coating texture to the utterly delicious finish. There is a hint of dryness though I suspect that in this case that it will round out so my projected range offers the benefit of the doubt.”

Auguste Clape Le Vin Des Amis 2013 ($29.95) $26 special
Vinopolnotes– The Vin des Amis is a bottling of 100% Syrah made in the style of Clape’s Cornas wines, but it doesn’t carry the appellation designation. Sourced from 40-year-old vines on soils of round river stones, the wine is fermented and held for 6 months in cement cuves and an additional 6 months in wood. This bottling carries an excellent value and is an excellent introduction to this unique, old school producer.

Auguste Clape Renaissance Cornas 2012 ($89.95) $79 special
Wine Advocate 94-96 points “Also gorgeous, and a wine that will be approachable at a slightly earlier date than the straight Cornas, the 2012 Cornas Renaissance delivers thrilling aromas and flavors of black fruits, liquid flowers, charcoal and charred beef that continue to develop and change in the glass. Full-bodied, deep and layered, with sweet tannin, this beauty can be consumed early on, or cellared for over a decade.”
Auguste Clape Cornas 2012 750ml($149.95) $119 special
Auguste Clape Cornas 2012 1.5 LITER ($399.95) $249 special
Wine Advocate 95-97 points “Moving to the reds and one of the most impressive efforts from Cornas I was able to taste, Clape’s 2012 Cornas offers up an inky purple color to go with massive aromas and flavors of charred earth, graphite, cassis, black raspberry and searing minerality. Turning meatier with air, this full-bodied 2012 has a blockbuster texture, thrilling mid-palate depth and a decadent finish, yet never loses focus or seems over the top in any way. It will need 3-4 years to become approachable, and evolve gracefully for two decades or more.”

Giacomo Conterno Barbera d’Alba Cascina Francia 2012 750ml ($59.95) $49 special
Giacomo Conterno Barbera d’Alba Cascina Francia 2012 1.5 LITER ($119.95) $99 special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2012 Barbera d’Alba Cascina Francia stands out for its exceptional finesse and delicacy. Sweet rose petals, mint, cinnamon and red berries are all laced together in a soft, polished Barbera long on class and finesse. Perfumed notes continues to open up in the glass, while brighter, more saline-inflected notes give the wine its sense of energy and tension. This is a magnificent showing. Ideally, readers will be able to give the 2012 at least another year or two in bottle.”

Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Bianco Le Vigne Niche 2012 ($39.95) $33 special
Winery notes “As opposed to my other Etna Bianco, which is a field blend of five varieties, Vigne Niche is 100% Carricante. Vigne Niche is barrel fermented and aged in large oak barrels. It is bottled roughly 12 months after harvest, then released after six more months of bottle age. A shy, late blooming wine of unusual complexity and great longevity, it will reward you for your patience with a rare, noble beauty. Have it with leek, pumpkin or onion soup, lobster bisque, risotto, oven baked fish, poultry, braised rabbit.”
Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso 2013 ($24.95) $20.90 special
Winery notes “Made from very fine Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio from low yielding vineyards (35 Hl. Per hectar), both young and old. The grapes are macerated until the end of fermentation. The wine then continues its life in wood until bottled roughly one year after harvest. Even young it is a distinguished wine. Fresh, fragrant, beautifully slender and with a fine grip, it has a natural polish, a stage presence, as it were. And, in aging, as its weave gathers into rich complexity, it is a wine for gentlemen. It is an aristocratically liberal wine: enjoy it with whatever food you wish, as long as its properly cooked.”
SPAIN/ PORTUGAL
Emilio Rojo Ribeiro Blanc 2012 ($69.95) $59 special
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “(made from a blend of treixadura, loureiro, albarino and torrontes): Pale gold. Sexy, mineral-tinged scents of orchard fruits, iodine, anise and white flowers. Smells like a Raveneau Chablis, and a good one at that. Sappy, smoky and incisive, offering vibrant pear and lemon rind flavors underscored by intense mineral and floral qualities. The iodine and smoke notes resonate on a finish that lingers with superb clarity and persistence.”
Vinopolnotes– This is the lowest listed price in the USA!
Rotllan Torra Priorat 2010 ($24.95) $19 special
Wine Spectator 90 points “Aromatic, with floral, spice and smoke notes, this expressive red follows through with kirsch, vanilla and mountain herb flavors that mingle in the firm texture. Balsamic accents round out the package. Drink now through 2020.”
Quinta Do Noval Vintage Port 2012 ($99.95) $89 special
Wine Advocate 92 points “Lucid purple/ruby in color, the first thing to strike you is the purity on the nose. There is a surfeit of fresh fig, prune and raisin that actually brings to mind a more tempered Fonseca. It is beautifully defined, not the most complex Noval, but seemingly approachable just like the 2011. The palate is well endowed with plenty of tangy, very spicy dark plums and blackcurrant fruit, a healthy dash of cracked black pepper and a very animated, attacking finish that is determined to make an impression, if not to be overshadowed by the 2011. This is a superb addition to recent Noval releases, one that I perhaps would broach earlier than others. Just 1,000 cases for this limited release.”
Quinta Do Noval Nacional Vintage Port 2004 ($699.95) $599 special
Wine Advocate 97 points “The 2004 Quinta do Noval Nacional has a show-stopping bouquet that is cut from a completely different cloth than the 2004 Vintage. This is far more extravagant and decadent, with kirsch, camphor, incense and crushed violets exploding from the glass. You might think it was some super Barossa Syrah if you nosed it blind. The palate is intense with penetrating, citrus-fresh black currant and dark-plum fruit. It is has lovely caressing, slightly grainy textured, well-judged acidity and a composed, elegant finish. This is pure class, a hedonistic Nacional surfeit with swagger and style. Drink 2020-2050. Tasted January 2014.”

Mollydooker The Boxer Shiraz South Australia 2013 ($31.95) $27 special
Winery notes “Succulent berry flavours with luscious chocolate layers as well as licorice and spice. The deep dark colour of the wine matches the deep flavours of the wine. 2013 Boxer is rounded and full on the pallet and the perfect balance of tannins and fragrant oak support the impressive fruit. The Shiraz brings so much character and complexity that it will be applauded by all who drink it.”
Mollydooker Maitre D’ Cabernet Sauvignon McLaren Vale 2013 ($31.95) $27 special
Winery notes “Distinctly Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2013 Maitre D’ has a firm structure but an amazing array of flavours. Rich, generous and complex the wine has the full spectrum of flavours going from cherry to plum to chocolate and finishing with mint and coffee. Dense fruit and fine tannins create intensity while the mouth-feel has a creaminess that adds to the texture and another level of sophistication to this great wine. I cannot remember a Mollydooker Maitre D’ that has wowed me as much as the 2013.”
Mollydooker Two Left Feet Red McLaren Vale 2013 ($31.95) $27 special
Winery’s note “Two Left Feet is the wine that is always looked forward to each year. It always exceeds expectations; it is magical how well it comes together. Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon work together brilliantly! The combination brings complexity and depth to this wine. Rich fruit and luscious flavors dance upon creamy mouth-feel and firm structure. Perfectly balanced and intense this wine is exciting and already very drinkable.”

The Royal Tokaji Aszu Szt. Tamas 6 Puttonyos 2007 ($149.95) $119 special
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2007 Tokaji Aszu Szt Tamas 6-Puttonyos has perhaps the most complex bouquet of the three single-vineyard aszu wines, adorned with dried honey, Japanese yuzu, just a hint of petrol and stewed mandarins that are all beautifully defined. The palate is extremely well-balanced with wonderful acidity that is embroidered through the pure mandarin, honey, quince and lemon peel. It is very focused with a tense, mineral finish.”

Champagne
For five generations, the J.L. Vergnon estate has been owned by a single family though no wine was directly bottled from the family. Jean-Louis Vergnon, who inherited the estate in 1950, began producing estate-bottled champagnes in 1985 along with his son Alain, hoping to produce extraordinary wines from his idyllic vineyards. Since 2002, winemaker Christophe Constant has assisted the family in the cellars, transforming this estate into one of the finest producers in the village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger.
The Vergnon estate consists of about five hectares of vineyards spread over the villages of Le Mesnil, Oger, Avize, Vertus and Villeneuve, all planted with chardonnay. Classified Grand Cru, Vergnon’s vineyards are renowned for their excellence; East-facing vineyards, averaging 30 years of age, growing above chalky subsoil. Since Constant’s arrival, he has consciously made an effort to harvest riper grapes, this riper fruit allowing them to avoid malolactic fermentation and to reduce the level of dosage. The wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks, and bottling is relatively late, following six months of aging on the lees. The blending of several plots from his different Crus allows Vergnon Champagnes to achieve great balance, and his stunning lineup of Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs are a hard to find pleasure.
JL Vergnon Grand Cru Brut Conversation Blanc De Blancs NV 375ML ($29.95) $24 special
Stephen Tanzer 92 points “Light gold. Mineral-accented citrus fruits and white flowers on the fragrant nose and in the mouth. Shows impressive clarity and cut, with a smoky nuance emerging with aeration. Closes on a bright, stony note, with repeating smokiness and a hint of buttery brioche. Offers a nice blend of richness and nerve.”
Wine Spectator 91 points “A svelte version, with a lacy mousse, this shows finely knit flavors of slivered almond, spring blossom, yellow plum and chalk. Elegant, presenting a hint of anise on the finish. Drink now through 2019.”
JL Vergnon Grand Cru Extra Brut Eloquence Blanc de Blancs NV ($69.95) $59 special
Wine Spectator 91 points “Filigreed in texture, this is firm and balanced in structure, offering a lovely mix of savory toasted almond and fleur de sel details, with ripe apricot, floral, lemon zest and pastry cream notes. Well-knit and stylish. Drink now through 2020.”
JL Vergnon Grand Cru Extra Brut Expression Blanc de Blancs 2006 ($79.95) $69 special
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Vivid yellow. Mineral-driven pear skin, jasmine and anise scents are given depth and power by notes of yellow plum and buttered toast. The palate offers intense, deeply concentrated citrus and orchard fruit flavors, with suggestions of brioche and orange pith gaining strength with air. The mineral quality adds definition to the finish, which clings with excellent persistence and a lingering floral quality.”
JL Vergnon Grand Cru Extra Brut Confidence Blanc De Blancs 2008 ($119.95) $99 special
Josh Raynolds–Vinous Media 93 points “Light yellow. Lively aromas of orange zest, pear and nectarine, with suave mineral and floral qualities adding complexity. Racy and precise on the palate, offering vivid citrus and orchard fruit flavors braced by chalky minerals and a hint of white pepper. Becomes deeper toward the finish, with the mineral element gaining strength and adding cut to a lingering note of bitter pear skin.”

Bergstrom Wines ‘Cumberland’ Reserve Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton District 2012 1.5L ($99.95) $89 special, 2 magnums available
Stephen Tanzer 91 points “Dark red. Spicy raspberry and rose pastille aromas are lifted by a mineral quality and pick up a hint of orange zest with air. Offers juicy, gently sweet red fruit flavors, with hints of bitter herbs and cola building on the back half. Closes spicy and long, with a strong echo of red berries and smooth, well-knit tannins that sneak in late. This is the best example of Bergstrom’s entry-level pinot bottling since the 2008.”
Westrey Abbey Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2011 1.5L ($89.95) $79 special, 2 magnums available
Winery Note: “We celebrate Abbey Ridge for its elegance and delicacy, and as we followed the progress of this wine in barrel we wondered how it would combine with the pure, precise, linear, crystalline nature of the 2011 vintage. Tasters often comment that the Abbey Ridge is our most Burgundian wine and in 2011, Burgundy and the Willamette Valley were in some other-worldly harmonious synch: raspberries, floral notes of paper whites and roses, cinnamon and clove abound in this wine, and in many of the Burgundies we have been lucky enough to taste from 2011. 222 cases & 5 cases of magnums produced.”

Betz Family Winery Besoleil, Columbia Valley 2012 1.5L ($119.95) $99 special, 2 magnums available
Wine Advocate 94 points “A Rhone-styled blend, the 2012 Besoleil is made from 50% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, 15% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre that’s aged all in neutral oak. Gorgeous on all accounts, it has fantastic density and depth, with medium to full-bodied richness, beautiful freshness and classic Grenache-driven aromas and flavors of raspberry, black raspberry, pepper, herbs de Provence and flowers. Already hard to resist, it should evolve gracefully for over a decade.”
Betz Family Winery La Cote Rousse Syrah, Red Mountain 2012 1.5L ($149.95) $119 special, 1 magnum available
Wine Advocate 95 points “95 points. More mineral-driven, with savory spices, dried earth and floral notes balanced by a rocking core of fruit, the 2012 Syrah La Cote Rousse is more backwards and reticent than the La Serenne, and will need short-term cellaring to unwind. Possessing full-bodied richness, beautiful concentration, high, yet sweet tannin, and a terrific finish, this awesome Syrah will be at its best from 2017-2027.”
Long Shadows Chester Kidder Red, Columbia Valley 2007 1.5L ($149.95) $119 special, 4 magnums available
Stephen Tanzer 93+ points “Medium red. Lovely Old World earthiness on the nose, along with brown spices and red rose. Then fresh, suave and layered in the mouth, with enticing floral lift to the dark berry, licorice, mocha and mineral flavors. This really spreads out to saturate the palate, but with perfume rather than weight. Finishes very long, with broad tannins, harmonious acidity and hints of mocha and pepper. A beauty. Chester-Kidder is the project of resident Long Shadows winemaker Gilles Nicault.”
Long Shadows Pedestal Merlot, Columbia Valley 2007 1.5L ($149.95) $119 special 1 magnum available
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2007 Pedestal Merlot is the project of Michel Rolland. This latest release is composed of 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot aged for 20 months in 80% new French oak. It reveals a fragrant nose of sandalwood, incense, sage, cinnamon, black cherry, and black currant. Elegant on the palate despite its ample size, it is loaded with succulent fruit set off by enough ripe tannin to support an additional 3-4 years of cellaring. It will deliver prime drinking from 2013 to 2027.”

Harlan Estate, Napa Valley 2004 1.5L ($1,499.95) $1,199 special, 3 magnums available
Robert Parker 98 points “Very deep garnet-black colour with a purple rim. Though still very youthful and muted, this vintage is already subtly revealing a wide array of aromas including blackberry tart, cedar, violets, truffles, liquorice and all spice. In the mouth however this is no shrinking violet–the ’04 is a big, concentrated and highly structured wine with somewhat impenetrable, tightly grained tannins and medium to high acid supporting its rich weight. Very, very long finish displaying hints of savoury earthiness and that signature minerality that appears to surface in better years. Drink 2009-2030.” RP

Wine Advocate 91 points “The 2009 Endre is a major step up in quality from the 2008 I tasted alongside it. The wine reveals lovely fleshiness and depth in its dark fruit, tobacco and spices. I especially like the way the Endre fleshes out on the finish. The 2009 is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Syrah. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017.” WA
Kapcsandy Family Winery State Lane Vineyard Grand-Vin Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2009 1.5L ($899.95) $599 special, 2 magnums available
Wine Advocate 98 points “The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Vin opens with the most beguiling bouquet imaginable. Freshly cut flowers, mint, cinnamon and licorice all make an appearance as this vivid, beautifully delineated wine opens up in the glass. A model of total finesse and elegance, the 2009 wraps around the palate with what feels like endless layers of aromas and flavors. This totally seamless, polished Cabernet Sauvignon is virtually impossible to resist today, but it will be even better in another few years. The 2009 is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2039. Kapcsandy’s 2009s have developed beautifully over the last year.” WA
Opus One Proprietary Red, Napa Valley 2009 1.5L ($799.95) $579 special, 3 magnums available
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2009 Opus One is impeccable. It brings together the silkiness of the 2007 with the power and darkness of the 2008, a combination that is hugely appealing, to say the least. With a little air, the 2009 can be enjoyed young, but it is best cellared for at least a few years, which will allow some of the baby fat to drop off. The blend is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot and 1% Malbec.” AG

Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Good medium red. Highly perfumed nose combines raspberry, strawberry, cocoa powder, white pepper, blood orange and a resiny headshop spiciness. Pungent, complex and weightless; a wonderfully lively, delicate wine with sneaky intensity and superb penetrating energy and lift. Finishes dry and understated. Suave rather than large. My recorked bottle lost some verve with 24 hours, suggesting that this wine is probably best for mid-term drinking-say, beginning in five years. But that brilliant nose can’t be duplicated anywhere outside the northern C o te de Nuits. Van Canneyt told me he doesn’t consider 2007 to be a great year for this domain and that he prefers the 2008s for their depth of fruit and texture.”ST

Floral notes develop later, adding lift and freshness, but this remains a rich, full-bodied wine endowed with stunning power and plenty of unbridled intensity. Honey, almonds and flowers are some of the many nuances that are wrapped into the layered, textured finish. This is yet another great showing from Fleury.”WA

Intense, mineral-accented aromas of orange zest, pear and white flowers, with an iodiney quality building in the glass. Hefty, but suave and seamless. The finish lets graphite and licorice elements glide through. The structure is dense, polished and perfectly integrated, resulting in lovely length. Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 2010 1.5 L($.95) $599 special, 1 magnums available
Robert Parker 100 points “Eclipsing even the 2009, the 2010 Cornas achieved one of the highest natural alcohol levels (14%) ever recorded at Clape. This complex, inky/purple-colored effort boasts abundant notes of charcoal, licorice, blackberries and blueberries intermixed with a hint of scorched earth (or is it charcoal embers?), a full-bodied mouthfeel, a seamless personality and a crushed rock-like minerality. The tannins are so sweet it will be drinkable in 2-3 years, and should keep for 25 or more. It is a tour de force in what Syrah can achieve in this hallowed appellation. Kudos to the Clape family, especially Pierre-Marie.” RP
Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 2012 1.5L($.95) $249 special,2 magnums available
Wine Advocate 95-97 points “Moving to the reds and one of the most impressive efforts from Cornas I was able to taste, Clape’s 2012 Cornas offers up an inky purple color to go with massive aromas and flavors of charred earth, graphite, cassis, black raspberry and searing minerality. Turning meatier with air, this full-bodied 2012 has a blockbuster texture, thrilling mid-palate depth and a decadent finish, yet never loses focus or seems over the top in any way. It will need 3-4 years to become approachable, and evolve gracefully for two decades or more.” WA
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 2008 1.5L ($.95) $289 special 3 magnums available
Wine Spectator 94 points “This is suave, with a smoldering tobacco note running from start to finish, while truffle, cocoa, braised fig and warm black currant confiture notes fill in the remaining space. Dense, but very silky along the edges, with remarkable harmony for the vintage.” WS
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 2011 1.5L ($.95) $499 special, 2 magnums available
Wine Advocate 96-98 points “The 2011 Hermitage (also still in barrel), in comparison, is more focused and straight, with a slightly more serious feel to its tannin profile and overall structure. All of the samples (again, tasted in individual components) were beautifully perfumed, with the Les Bessards (which will make up the bulk of the blend) showing surprising density and concentration in a vintage that generally produced more up-front and supple wines. A serious 2011 that will certainly be one of the stars of the vintage, it should be reasonably approachable on release and have an easy two decades of longevity.” WA
Wine Spectator 96 points “A grippy, mouthwatering style, with solid, briary tannins inlaid with finely beaded acidity, all of which meld into the core of anise, blackberry paste and fig sauce flavors. Shows terrific energy on the singed apple wood-filled finish. Should cruise in the cellar. Best from 2016 through 2030.” JM

Domaine Pierre Usseglio et Fils Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul 2010 1.5L ($.95) $219 special, 8 magnums available
Robert Parker 97 points “The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul (cropped at 12-16 hectoliters per hectare) comes from the estate’s finest vineyards in the southern part of the appellation (Les Grandes Serres), the eastern sector (the famed La Crau) and the northern sector (Guigasse). The wine is aged primarily in stainless steel tanks with a small percent (less than 20%) kept in 600-liter demi-muids. Despite the 16.5% natural alcohol, there is not a trace of heat in this wine. It is stunningly concentrated with great intensity as well as classic blueberry, peppery, incense, camphor, fig and licorice characteristics. Rich and full-bodied with slightly more freshness than their profound 2007, the 2010 Mon Aieul should age effortlessly for two decades.” RP

Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine Sur Lie Clos des Briords 2013 1.5L ($.95) $49 special, 5 magnums available
John Gilman 92 points, Wine Advocate 91 points “The Clos des Briords Cuvée Vieilles Vignes from Domaine de la Pépière is always one of the great wines of Muscadet, and even in a tough vintage like 2013, my pulse starts to race a bit when I pull the cork to see how the wine is going to be. The wine is absolutely transcendental of the vintage, with the classic cut and grip that are so rare in 2013, to go along with lovely depth and complexity on both the nose and palate. The wine jumps from the glass in a mix of lemon, green apple, briny soil tones, white flowers and just a whisper of leesiness. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very soil-driven, with lovely focus and grip, a very good core of fruit, bright acids and excellent length and grip on the quite open finish. In a great classic year, this wine would not be as forward as the 2013 is right out of the blocks, but that is the only atypical characteristic that this vintage of Clos des Briords shows today. A stellar success. 2014-2025.” JG

Wine Advocate 95 points “Giacosa’s 2005 Barbaresco Asili is noticeably rounder, sweeter and denser than the Santo Stefano. It shows remarkable balance and harmony in an incredibly pure, graceful style. The tannins are so finessed and elegant it is hard to actually perceive them on the palate. Here too, the wine shows awesome inner balance and poise. Sweet raspberries, flowers, roses and spices are just some of the nuances that emerge from this incredibly delicious, promising Barbaresco. Ca’ del Baio Asili, Barbaresco DOCG 2009 1.5L ($.95) $69 special, 1 magnums available
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2009 Barbaresco Asili caresses the palate with soft, open fruit and a resonant personality that is quite striking. The essence of red berries, rose petals and sweet spices blossom in the glass. This is an especially vibrant style for the year, with excellent freshness, color and balance. Firm tannins support a highly attractive, delineated finish. The 2009 should be an absolute beauty in another few years, once the tannins soften. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted from Ca’del Baio this year. As always, the house style favors a juicy, fruit-forward expression of Nebbiolo.” WA
Domenico Clerico Arte Rosso Langhe 2010 1.5L ($.95) $79 special, 2 magnums available
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2010 Langhe Rosso Arte is a crowd-pleasing blend of Nebbiolo (about 90 percent) and Barbera that drinks sumptuously even at this young age. It shows the important structure, acidity and promptness of fruit for a steady evolution. Many of Clerico’s best wines are engineered in this fashion: Although they taste beautiful straight out of the bottle, they generously reward those who wait. In this case, you get layers of bold fruit, spice, and tobacco that are carefully woven into the thick and enduring fabric of the wine. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025.”

Antonio Galloni 97 points “Dark red cherries, plums, smoke, tar, menthol and licorice all take shape in the 2010 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Casa Matè. Today the 2010 is painfully young and less expressive than the Gavarini, but equally promising. A generous, resonant wine, the 2010 blossoms in all directions with seemingly endless layers of dark, balsamic-inflected fruit. Today, the Casa Matè is closed and shut down, but it has all the qualities to develop into a spectacular Barolo. The future is bright, especially for readers who can be patient.”

Wine Spectator 96 points “Warm and chewy, this red exhibits cedar, sandalwood, tobacco and leather accents enhancing the core of cherry and raspberry. As this plays out on the palate, the wine turns more supple and vibrant, building to the long, expansive finish. Best from 2016 through 2035.”WS
Bruno Giacosa ‘Le Rocche del Falletto’ 2005 1.5L ($.95) $419 special, 5 magnums available
Wine Advocate 96+ points, Wine Spectator & Stephen Tanzer 95 points “The 2005 Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto is a massive, towering Barolo loaded with tons of rich, primary fruit. The wine remains powerful, dense and muscular with superb length even if it is a smaller-scaled Barolo compared to previous great vintages. That said, when I came back to the wine after it had been in the glass for an hour or so, I found that the wine had grown remarkably. While the 2005 doesn’t have the explosive personality of the 2004, it remains an awesome achievement in this vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035.”WA
Marcarini Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2010 1.5L ($.95) $133 special, 3 magnums available
Stephen Tanzer 93+ points “Bright, dark red. Pungent, high-pitched aromas of bitter cherry, blackberry, mint, blood orange and white peach. Then dense, sweet and pliant yet penetrating thanks to terrific vibrant acidity. For a medium-bodied wine, this communicates an impression of strong dry extract. The firm tannins arrive late, allowing the wine’s finishing fruit to expand and stain the palate. Classic 2010 energy here.”
Produttori del Barbaresco Montestefano, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 1.5L ($.95) $119 special, 10 magnums available
Wine Advocate 95+ points “The 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is exquisite and harmonious from start to finish. Among the more structured 2008s, the Montestefano is the wine that most hides its tannin, as the fruit is intensely perfumed, rich and totally seductive. Today the Montestefano provides the illusion of being relatively accessible, but it is virtually certain to shut down in bottle. The 2008 boasts striking aromatics, seemingly endless layers of fruit and power to burn. Readers can think of the Montestefano as a synthesis of Montefico, Ovello and Rabaja. Not bad, to say the least. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.” WA
Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 1.5L ($.95) $119 special, 14 magnums available
Wine Advocate 95+ points “The Produttori’s 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a reference point wine for the village, even if, in truth, Ovello is a fairly diverse zone with many exposures. Firm, steely tannins support a core of expressive fruit in this vibrant, energetic Barbaresco. The 2008 is going to require considerable patience, but it is striking, even today. Sweet floral notes reappear on the vivid, utterly breathtaking finish, adding lift, precision and vibrancy. This is a stunning wine from the Produttori. The style is built on tension, energy and focus; in other words, all the qualities Ovello is known for. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.” WA
Produttori del Barbaresco Rabaja, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2007 1.5L ($.95) $149 special, 2 magnums available
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2007 Barbaresco Riserva Rabaja is a big, dark wine loaded with dark fruit, menthol, tar, flowers, mint, rosemary and an array of balsamic notes that develop in the glass. The Rabaja possesses stunning depth to match its muscular tannins. It is a dazzling wine endowed with tons of inner perfume and sheer personality as it saturates the palate from start to finish. Today, the Rabaja comes across as huge and almost Barolo like, but it has plenty of Rabaja character. Purists will want to age the wine for a number of years to allow the baby fruit to drop off, but the truth is, it is pretty stunning even today. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2037.”WA
Produttori del Barbaresco Rabaja, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 1.5L ($.95) $149 special, 12+ magnums available
Wine Advocate 96+ points “The 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Rabaja is utterly magnificent in this vintage. Usually a powerhouse, the 2008 is incredibly refined to the point it seems to literally hover on the palate. It is a wine of exquisite grace and beauty. All the elements are in place. I could describe the aromas and flavors, but that would be doing this majestic Barbaresco a huge disservice. Ultimately, the 2008 Rabaja, is all about textural finesse and pure elegance. This is another breathtaking wine from the Produttori. A king among kings. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.” WA
Roberto Voerzio Riserva Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2000 1.5L ($.95) $399 special, 4 magnums available
Stephen Tanzer 94 points “Highly complex aromas of raspberry, woodsmoke, spices, pepper and Havana tobacco. At once lush and sappy in the mouth, with the creamy sweetness of a fruit liqueur complemented by notes of tobacco, chocolate and mocha. Shows a distinctly roasted character without losing its balance or verve. Explosive, seamless Barolo that saturates the palate with fruit. Finishes with slow-building tannins and outstanding persistence.”ST
Vietti Barbaresco Masseria, Barbaresco DOCG 2007 1.5L ($.95) $199 special, 2 magnums available
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2007 Barbaresco Masseria flows gracefully from the glass with fabulous aromas of crushed flowers, berries, spices and minerals. It is a wonderfully perfumed, elegant Barbaresco of the highest level. Supple and open today, it promises to drink well to age twenty, if not significantly longer. Hints of the profound 1989 Barolo Rocche – one of the all time greats here – lingers on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.”
Vietti Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2006 1.5L ($.95) $319 special, 2 magnums available
Wine Enthusiast 97 points, Wine Advocate & Stephen Tanzer 95 points “Bravo! The Brunate cru has awarded Vietti with a stellar product: a wine that is unusually dark and plush with impressive intensity and crafted aromas of black fruit, spice, earth, licorice, balsam and gianduia chocolate-hazelnut spread. The soft, velvety texture is seductively delicious and the wine will age many long, glorious years.” WE
Vietti Lazzarito, Barolo DOCG 2006 1.5L ($.95) $349 special, 1 magnums available
Wine Advocate 97 points “The 2006 Barolo Lazzarito has begun to show the pedigree of this great Serralunga site now that Vietti has backed off the French oak, and the 2006 is nothing short of superb. A melange of dark, mineral-infused fruit flows from the glass as the large-scaled Lazzarito gradually shows off its class. Licorice, tar, smoke and earthiness add layers of complexity and nuance. The Lazzarito is still the Barolo that spends the longest number of months in French oak following the malolactic fermentation, but that period is down to several months from a full year the wine spent in small barrels up until 2001 or so. One day the Lazzarito may challenge the Rocche as Vietti’s signature Barolo, and that day may be closer than most people realize. This huge, imposing Barolo will require patience, but it is nothing short of superb. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.”WA
Vietti Lazzarito, Barolo DOCG 2007 1.5L ($.95) $349 special 2 magnums available
Wine Advocate 96+ points “The 2007 Barolo Lazzarito is a superb, plush wine loaded with dark fruit, flowers of all sorts, sweet menthol and minerals, all of which flow through to the long, powerful finish. The wine’s inner perfume emerges over time, adding even more nuance and subtlety to this big Barolo. The 2007 Lazzarito is far from an open, easygoing wine, in fact it needs time, and lots of it. Anticipated maturity: 2022-2042.”WA
Roberto Voerzio Riserva Vecchie Viti dei Capalot e Brunate, Barolo DOCG 1999 1.5L ($.95) $379 special, 1 magnums available
Stephen Tanzer 95+ points – “Full, deep ruby-red. Restrained but highly complex nose melds strawberry, raspberry, currant, mocha and dried flowers; less exuberant today than the Samassa. But the sweetest and lushest in the mouth of these ’99s: hugely rich, creamy and seamless but with terrific supporting vinosity giving it a lightness of touch.” ST

Felsina Berardenga Rancia, Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2010 1.5L ($.95) $99 special 1 magnums available
Antionio Galloni 95+ points “The 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is cool, inward and reserved at this stage. Much less expressive than it was from barrel, today the 2010 appears to be in a closed phase. There is so much tension in the glass, though, and I can hardly wait to see where the 2010 goes over the coming years. A burst of mineral and floral infused fruit lingers on the polished, nuanced finish. Today, the 2010 seems to bring together the finesse of 2004 with the structure and power of the 2010. A pretty magical combination, if you ask me.” AG
Isole e Olena Cepparello Toscana IGT 2005 1.5L ($.95) $119 special, 10 magnums available
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2005 Cepparello is striking. It possesses stunning depth and a darker profile of fruit than is typical. The 2005 was quite compact when first released, but what a difference a few years in bottle make. Today the 2005 has begun to blossom into a big, dramatic wine for the year. As was the case throughout most of Chianti Classico, 2005 was shaping up to be a great year until the rains arrived just before harvest. This is a fabulous effort on its own, but especially notable for the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.” AG

Azienda Agricola Arianna Occhipinti Il Frappato Sicilia IGT 2012 1.5L($.95) $69 special 2 magnums available
Stephen Tanzer 91 points “Good bright medium red. Wild red berries, sour red cherry, violet and sweet spices on the nose, plus hints of blood orange and savory earthy scents. Bright and juicy on entry, then tougher and concentrated in the middle, showing less floral lift and more fleshiness than is usual with frappato. Finishes long and full, with strong iron and saline traces. Very well done: give this highly promising frappato at least two years of cellaring for optimal drinking. Unlike the 2013 SP68 white wine, the new red wine vintages by young Arianna Occhipinti show pure floral aromas unmarred by oxidative tones, which were once much more evident in these wines.” ST

Stephen Tanzer 92 points ” Pale golden yellow. Candied papaya, persimmon, clove and a vague hint of smoky botrytis on the nose. Luscious, creamy peach nectar flavor is nicely framed and accented by a splash of salty minerality. Richer and denser than the spätlese, showing excellent length, but not necessarily much better.” ST

Mosel Fine Wines 93 points “This offers a deliciously rich and soft feel of flowers, herbs and ripe fruits, in which a hint of apricot, mango and also honey come through on the palate and in the finish. The wine is quite rich and smooth and leaves an airy and spicy feel in the long aftertaste. It lives from the fascinating botrytis complexity and it will be fascinating to see how it will develop in the coming decades. 2022-2042.” MFW

“A blend of Maccabeu , Roussane , Clairette and Grenache Blanc from soils of clay and chalky limestone. Biodynamically farmed, this blend produces a medium bodied white with rich expressions of fruit and vanilla at the start, finishing crisp and clean with notes of tart apple and lemon.”
Tarlant Rose Zero Brut Nature ($59.95) $49 staff pick special
“Champagne Tarlant’s Rose Zero is a completely dry non-vintage Champagne based on the excellent 2008 vintage. It shows aromas of crisp citrus, red berries and spices on the nose. It is creamy and rich, but the bright acidity and dryness keeps everything balanced. On the finish is a lingering note of freshly baked biscuits. This delightful pink Champagne that will pair well with appetizers, cream sauces, seafood and poultry.”

Case-12 Alvear Pedro Ximenez De Anada 2011 375ML ($999.95) $479 case price special (that’s only $39.92 / bottle!)**
Robert Parker 100 points “Alvear’s 2011 Pedro Ximenez de Anada is the most amazing Pedro Ximenez I have ever tasted. It may also be one of the first to be vintage-dated. The grapes were hand-harvested in September, then allowed to dry in the sunshine until they began fermentation, which is ultimately arrested by the addition of spirits. The wine spent six months in large American oak prior to being bottled. It is an amazing effort that looks like molasses. Notes of macerated figs, chocolate and caramelized tropical fruits emerge from this full-bodied, unctuously-textured wine. While sweet, it has enough acidity to balance out its richness. This astonishing 2011 Pedro Ximenez will last as long as any reader of this newsletter.”

The 2009 vintage still needs time to flesh out and find its footing. Red rose, dried blackberry, moist clay and button mushroom all make subtle appearances on the feminine bouquet. Firm structure is present to carry this wine forward over the years. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2022. ”

Case-12 Stonestreet Monument Ridge Cabernet 2010 750ml ($379.95) $336 case price special (that’s $28 / bottle!)**
Wine Enthusiast 93 points “A lovely Cabernet, ripe and delicious, yet complex enough to hold your interest. It’s just beginning its journey in the bottle. Very dark in color, with hard tannins, it has an immense core of blackberries and cherries. Give it at least 6-8 years, but it could still be rocking in 2022.”

Stephen Tanzer 91 points “(90% tempranillo and 10% graciano): Deep ruby. Highly fragrant scents of redcurrant, cherry, dried rose and spicecake, with hints of smoke and pipe tobacco. Packs a punch, displaying very good vivacity to the cherry preserve and floral pastille flavors. Finishes sappy, focused and long, with silky tannins and lingering sweetness. This elegant wine is drinking well now but has the balance to age.”

Time to Say Goodbye
John Gilman 94+ points “Vineyards such as Bonnes-Mares really have taken advantage of the elegant side of the 2011 vintage, and this is doubly true of this stunning wine from Maison Jadot. The deep, sappy and simply gorgeous nose wafts from the glass in a mélange of black cherries, dark berries, woodsmoke, game, espresso, fresh herbs, stunningly complex soil tones and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite plush on the attack, with great mid-palate depth, laser-like focus, ripe, firm tannins and simply stunning length and grip on the still very young finish. Profound juice….94+”
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Bright, deep red. Initially explosive aromas and flavors of cherry, menthol, incense and spices subsided in favor of blueberry, crushed stone and peppermint tea: very Bonnes-Mares! Wonderfully silky and scented in the mouth, displaying very good breadth but a light touch. Finishes with a broad, fine dusting of tannins and excellent length and lift. A compellingly perfumed and pure wine: am I greedy for wanting the flesh and sweetness of a warmer year?”
