Mid-Week New Arrivals

OREGON
Cameron Ramato 2014 750ML ($27.95) $24 special
Winery note “Rame: Italian for copper, ramato: copper-colored. Ramato is a copper-colored Pinot grigio made in the tradition of north-eastern Italy. A very tricky wine to pull off. Very limited production.”
VinopolNote: 100% Pinot Gris from Abbey Ridge vineyard. Grapes are harvested just as the seeds begin to brown. The grapes are crushed and the juice is left on the skins for 4-5 hours to extract color before pressing. The wine is aged for 6-8 months in neutral barrique to allow the proteins to settle out without filtration, which would remove the color.
CALIFORNIA
Kapcsandy Family Winery Endre, Napa Valley 2010 750ML ($99.95) $79 special
Robert Parker 94 points “The less expensive 2010 Endre (53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc aged in both French and Hungarian oak) is very Bordeaux like. Notes of bouquet garni, red and black currants and loamy soil are present in this medium-bodied wine that seems to be a faster evolving effort than its siblings. With excellent texture as well as an elegant style, and I use that word in a positive sense, it should drink well for 10-15 years.” RP
FRANCE-BURGUNDY
Domaine Bruno Clair Marsannay Les Grasses Tetes 2012 750ML ($69.95) $49 special
Antonio Galloni 90-92 points “Dark red cherry, plums, smoke, licorice and incense meld together in the 2012 Marsannay Les Grasses Têtes. Here the clay-rich soils yield a dark, sumptuous Marsanny built on textural volume and pure resonance. A broad, rich, explosive wine, the 2012 boasts exceptional balance and tons of class.”

Domaine Bruno Clair Chambertin-Clos de Beze Grand Cru 2012 750ML ($479.95) $399 special
Wine Advocate 95-97 points “The 2012 Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru has a tight but focused bouquet with mineral-rich red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit, citrus peel and almost a touch of flint. The palate is silky smooth on the entry with very fine tannins. It is reticent at first but it unfurls wondrously in the month with effervescent red fruit infused with orange zest and fabulous nervosite that keep the mouth tingling long after the wine has bid adieu. This is one of the finest Clos de Beze that I have encountered from the domaine. Bon vin!”
FRANCE-OTHER
Andre Dezat & Fils Sancerre Rose, Loire 2014 750ML ($21.95) $17 special
“The Sancerre rosé, from the same grape variety as the red, undergoes a short maceration before being pressed. Fine, with a slight salmon hue, this rosé is the perfect summertime wine.” Winemaker Notes

E.A.R.L. Burle Vacqueyras, Rhone 2013 750ML ($21.95) $17 special
Importer note “Burle’s wines are rustic and hearty, much like the Gigondas that originally gave the area its reputation. The Vacqueyras from a vineyard with 40-50 year vines. No fining, no filtration and organic farming. These are big, rich, complex, age-worthy wines with ripe fruit and plenty of tannin. Total production is only 500 cases!”

Wine Advocate 92 points “The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, succulent, fleshy tannins that are caressing in the mouth. There is plump, ripe red berry fruit, red currant, raspberry and a touch of balsamic at the finish. This is just as good as the succeeding vintage. Drink 2014-2019.” WA

Producer notes “A dry and fruity wine, easy to drink. Its colour is pale gold with greenish hues. Very fresh aromas reminiscent of citrus (lemon or grapefruit); small pleasant touches of fern or coriander are found as well. On the palate, dry and fruity, with mineral notes. Pleasant and long aftertaste.”

Joseph Drouhin Chorey-les-Beaune 2012 750ML ($27.95) $22.70 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Joseph Drouhin Chorey-les-Beaune 2012 750ML ($299.95) $249 pre-arrival special (that’s only $20.75/bottle!)
Antonio Galloni 88 points “A tasty, entry-level offering, the 2012 Chorey-les-Beaune stands out for its beautiful bright red fruit, expressive floral overtones and vibrant saline notes. Delineation, tension and energy are the hallmarks. This is a beautifully balanced wine in its class.” AG

Joseph Drouhin Le Musigny Grand Cru 2011 750ML ($799.95) $589 pre-arrival special
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 92-95 points “Good deep red. Captivating aromas of blueberry, violet, coffee bean, white pepper and crushed stone. Juicy on entry, then tight and imploded in the middle, with an energetic core of fruit currently dominated by the wine’s structure. Most impressive today on the rising, expanding back end, which saturates the mouth with dusty minerality. This will need eight to ten years of cellaring.” ST
Burghound 93-95 points ” Don’t miss! A highly spiced, cool and reserved nose features superb breadth with a wonderfully appealing array of plum, violets, wet stone and essence of red berry fruit. The exceptionally rich, focused and intensely mineral-inflected broad-shouldered flavors evidence focused power and a sleek muscularity before terminating in an explosive and palate saturating finish of genuinely stunning length. This is a knockout in every respect.” BH

Joseph Drouhin Le Musigny Grand Cru 2012 750ML ($999.95) $799 pre-arrival special
Burghound 96 points “Here the expressive nose is even more complex and spicier than the Amoureuses with its fresh and impressively pure notes of black cherry, plum, violets and cassis that are trimmed by a backdrop of softly toasty oak. There is good power and excellent size, weight and muscle on the big-bodied flavors that exude plenty of mouth coating dry extract that also serves to buffer the very firm tannins on the strikingly persistent and almost painfully intense finish. There is a beguiling contrast between the silky mid-palate and the powerful finish that just goes on and on. This should be stunning in time but this is definitely not a wine for early consumption.” BH
FRANCE-OTHER
Joseph Drouhin Moulin-a-Vent, Beaujolais 2010 750ML ($29.95) $18 pre-arrival special
Producer note “Great breed. Beautiful dark garnet colour. Intense and elegant aromas, with notes of peony, tea rose and damson plum, often with nuances of liquorice. On the palate, beautiful structure, velvety texture (“gras”) and majesty. The aftertaste is long, refined and appetizing in a subdued way. The Cru of Beaujolais that is the closest in style to the Burgundies of the Côte d’Or.”

Chapoutier Cotes du Roussillon Villages Domaine de Bila-Haut Occultum Lapidem, Languedoc-Roussillon 2013 750ML ($31.95) $28 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94 points “Slightly more ripe, voluptuous and textured than the more Syrah-dominated l’Esquerda, the translucent purple-colored 2013 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Latour de France Occultum Lapidem comes from the schist soils around the village of Latour de France. A blend of 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Carignan that was harvest on September 15 and aged all in concrete tanks, it’s a fabulous wine that offers elegant notes of red and black raspberries, roasted herbs, pepper, melted licorice and asphalt. These flow to a medium to full-bodied 2013 that has a full, layered mid-palate, beautiful fruit, fine tannin and a classically focused, dry finish. It continues to freshen up in the glass, has integrated acidity and lots of class. Buy this brilliant wine by the case and drink it over the coming decade.”

Chateau Suduiraut Castelnau de Suduiraut, Sauternes 2010 375ML ($24.95) $19 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 90 points “A ripe, mouthfilling version, with toasted almond and coconut leading the way for apricot, creamed peach, melon and meringue flavors. The long, tropical finish lets a marizpan note play out. Drink now through 2022.” WS

This is the only listing in the USA today!
SPAIN
CVNE Compania Vinicola del Norte de Espana Cune Rosado 2014 750ML ($14.95) $11.90 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 90 points “Bold flavors of blood orange, maraschino cherry, rose petal and pomegranate mingle in this full-bodied rosé. Citrus peel acidity and light tannins impart structure. This shows the character and color of a light red wine. Distinctive. Drink now through 2016. 2,000 cases imported.” WS

La Rioja Alta Vina Alberdi Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2008 750ML ($27.95) $21.90 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 91 points “I tasted two vintages of the only pure Tempranillo wine they produce. The 2008 Viña Alberdi comes from their vineyards in Rodezno and Labastida and matured in American oak barrels for two years, the first year in new barrels and the second year in used ones. The nose is very classical, with notes of beef blood, leather and spices and more fruit than its siblings. The oak is perfectly integrated despite having some new wood (they have to use the new barrels somewhere). It develops aniseed aromas with time in the glass. The palate is soft and polished, has good acidity and freshness through to a very tasty finish. This is sold in the export markets as a Reserva and in Spain mostly as Crianza, but it’s a very classical Rioja at a very good price” LG
Wine Spectator 91 points “Leafy, herbal and gamy notes mingle in this light, crisp red, backing modest berry and dried cherry flavors. Light tannins and juicy acidity keep this wiry and lively. A traditional style. Drink now.” TM

La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2005 375ML ($27.95) $21.90 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94 points “Cropped from a vintage deemed almost perfect, the 2005 Viña Ardanza Reserva follows the same varietal mix found in the last vintages; 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. The grapes are always sourced from the same vineyards, 30-year-old Tempranillo from Fuenmayor and Cenicero in Rioja Alta and Garnacha from Tudelilla in Rioja Baja. In the case of the 2005, it was racked six times during its elevage. The one bottle I tasted first was a bit evolved with plenty of cigar ash, incense and leather along with hung game (woodcock came to mind). But the palate was drying out a bit. Another bottle showed much fresher, with a great classical Rioja profile. This is very affordable making it a superb value for what it delivers. 600,000 bottles were produced of the prodigious 2005 vintage. This wine is not produced in 2002, 2003, 2006, 2011 or 2013.” LG

This is the only listing in the half-bottle in the USA today!

Case-12 Kaiken Ultra Malbec, Mendoza 2012 750ML ($219.95) $189 pre-arrival special (that’s only $15.75/bottle!)
James Suckling 94 points “Intense aromas of ripe berry, sandalwood and dark chocolate follow through to a full body, with super integrated tannins and a blueberry and light vanilla character. Ultra serious. Drink or hold.” JS

Antonio Galloni 91 points “The NV Brut Rosé is fabulous. A sweet, open bouquet leads to expressive fruit in this rich, textured wine. The Deutz Rosé is a serious wine that can be enjoyed as an aperitif, but it also has more than enough power in reserve to drink well at the dinner table. Floral notes reappear to round out the finish. The blend is 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay. — Antonio Galloni”

Stephen Tanzer 89-91 points ” Medium red-ruby. Aromas of black cherry and mocha; less floral and complex than the Volnay cuvees. Sweet and chewy on entry, then a bit cool, even austere, in the middle, showing a medicinal cast to the black fruit and chocolate flavors. Holding a lot in reserve but distinctly taut and clenched today. Finishes with tight tannins. Seems less ripe and rich than the Volnay Pitures.” ST

Weingut A.J. Adam Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Mosel 2012 750ML ($99.95) $69 special, 8 bottles available
Terry Theise: “Sterner stuff than the village wine; pointed intense aromas of blueberries and white iris and candied lemon. The palate is off the hinges! Entirely harmonious, rampantly exotic and rich, it’s like a Pfalz GG with more grace and less earthiness. Pink peppercorn and powder-puff, ginger and mustard-seed; stern slate on the finish after this thrill-ride of improbable elements for Riesling. The empty glass even smells a little like Savignin.”

Aged Libations

Portugal is one of the most dynamic wine markets today – with a vast array of modern and traditional wines only now being “discovered” by the rest of the world. Long associated with Port, it is also home to obscure varietals farmed for centuries in the isolated country. The Bairrada region covers the coastal area from the Douro River almost down to the Tejo River and a large interior section surrounding the Dao. It is known for rich reds produced from indigenous grapes such as Baga. This grape is known to be very acidic and tannic. Modern producers blend in international varietals such as Merlot and Cabernet, but traditional winemakers prefer to allow the wine to age into peak maturity, preserving the essence of the grape. Jaen (known as Mencia in Spain) can offer distinctiveness and ageability with careful vineyard management and low yields. Touriga Nacional offers structure, tannin and acidity, while Alfrocheiro offers deep color, intensity (and disease-resistance in the vineyard). The white grape Arinto is known for high acid retention even in hot growing conditions and expresses citrus notes in youth that develop into stone fruit with age.

Caves São João was founded in 1920 by the brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa as a wine cellaring company dedicated to Douro region wines and liqueurs. After the government prohibited production of Port from outside O’Porto limits in the 1930s, the company shifted its focus toward Bairrada table wines and naturally sparkling wines, with the assistance of renowned French oenologist Gaston Mainousson. In the 1950s, they launched Frei João, one of the top brands of the Bairrada region, and Porta Dos Cavaleiro, of the Dão region. In the 1970s, they acquired the Quinta do Poco do Lobo estate where they grow their own grapes. According to Hugh Johnson, the company is a “small, traditional firm [known] for very good old-fashion wines. Reds can age for decades. It is a well known and highly reputed winery.”

After the Portugese colonies gained independence in the 1950s, the market for their wines shrunk. The previous generation mostly held the wines, so the collection grew and aged. Recently, older wines have become fashionable in Portugal, and the company has jumped at the chance to do business. Caves São João is recognized for its quality winemaking with a traditional bent and excellent ageability.

Striking Chardonnay
California’s 2013 Vintage

“A vintage with verve. That’s what sets apart the 2013 harvest for California Chardonnay. Typically one of the Golden State’s steadiest and most reliable wines year in, year out, Chardonnay delivers not only another strong vintage with 2013, but a highly distinctive one as well. The reason is phenolics. This group of compounds, which are part of the same chemical family as tannins, impart a pithy citrus or Asian pear skin texture, and California winemakers say they figure strongly in the 2013 Chardonnays… This is a special vintage, whose even growing season and smaller, drought-induced crop—yielding smaller berries, higher acidities and deep concentration—produced a unique group of wines.” – James Laube, Wine Spectator

Forman Chardonnay, Napa Valley 2013 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 34 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 94 points “Ric Forman’s 2013 Chardonnay is striking. Lemon oil, white flowers, oyster shells and mint all open up in a wine that brings a little more textural depth to the signature Forman style built on tension and energy. The 2013 is impeccable. It’s as simple as that.”
Wine Advocate 94 points “The Forman Chardonnay is 100% barrel-fermented, sees 10% new oak, but is never put through malolactic. The superb 2013 Chardonnay offers lots of minerality along with notions of white peaches, spring flowers, orange blossoms and poached pears. With loads of fruit, great acid and finesse, and only a hint of oak in the flavor profile, this medium to full-bodied, gorgeous Chardonnay can be enjoyed over the next 5-6 years. Ric Forman is one of the most experienced winemakers in Napa Valley with an impressive track record that goes back to the early 1970s! He has been on his own for a number of years and his non-malolactic Chardonnay has become part of the lexicon of wine styles and is known as the ‘Forman style.”

Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Chardonnay 2013 750ML ($29.95) $21.90 special, 29 bottles available
Wine Advocate 92 points “Longtime winemaker Ted Edwards has fashioned a beautiful 2013 Chardonnay, an 11,000-case, non-malolactic, 70% barrel-fermented cuvée from multiple sources throughout Napa. One-third new French oak was used. Notes of delicate pear, apple blossom and tropical fruits emerge from this classic Chardonnay. Medium to full-bodied with a greenish hue to its color, it exhibits impressive layers and minerality. Enjoy it over the next 4-5 years.” WA
