“Despite the tenaciously held stereotype of riesling as sweet, Austrian rieslings are almost always dry. They tend to be fuller-bodied than German rieslings but are often steelier and more lively than rieslings from Alsace. They can display gorgeous fruit and herbal flavors as well as great minerality, that catchall term often used to describe stony, rocky, earthy flavors.” – Eric Asimov

Knoll sale at Vinopolis
Located in the town of Unterloiben in the Wachau of Austria, Weingut Knoll occupies some of Austria’s most celebrated vineyards. As a leading member of the Wachau Nobilis Districtus (an illustrious organization of the top Wachau winemakers), the winery is heralded by critics, somms, and collectors as one of the finest estates in the region. The focus here is on rigorous quality control in the vineyard and winery to emphasize individual expressions of their famed parcels lining the Danube River.

Across fifteen hectares, Riesling and Grüner Veltiner vines are cultivated by third-generation members of the Knoll family: Emmerich III oversees the cellar, and August is head of vineyard work. The family’s history growing grapes in the region dates as far back as 1379.

The estate produces over twenty-five cuvees each year to highlight the unique microclimates. Rieslings are planted mostly on granite bedrock, while Grüner plantings tend to be found higher up the banks of the Danube on granite and loess.

On the technical side, if you’re less familiar with Austrian wine classification systems, know that “Ried” indicates a single vineyard and comes before the name of the vineyard on the label (ie: Ried Loibenberg). “Federspiel” indicates a wine with between 11.5% and 12.5% alcohol. This style tends to be lighter in body and can be less concentrated. “Smaragd” wines have at least 12.5% alcohol. Though all of these wines are dry, Smaragd wines tend to have a fuller body, richer texture, and more impact. These are the highest quality wines under the Wachau classification.

The wines of Knoll are marked with beautiful textural qualities and layered aromatics. They represent some of Austria’s finest and one of the best values in the world for distinguished whites. We’re excited to have them in the shop, and even more excited to present them to you on our three-day sale.

“Pure and harmonious, with succulent acidity supporting peach, floral, chive and lime zest flavors. Juicy, with nice weight on the palate, flecked with white tea and chalky minerality. Shows smoke that wafts through the well-knit, snappy finish. Drink now. 180 cases imported.”
Wine Enthusiast 90 points “A leaner, precise style, boasting melon, lentil and white-pepper flavors. The finish is tangy and complex, with a long and inviting note of savory minerals. This would be beautiful with crudo. — Aleks Zecevic”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“Predominantly from loess soils, the 2019 Ried Loibenberg Loibner Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is very stony and lemony on the distinctive nose of crushed stones and lemon zest. Round, dense and intense on the palate, this is a rich and powerful but elegant, finessed and persistently salty Loibenberg with remarkable freshness. Really powerful this year yet not alcoholic at all. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.”
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 95 points “The super ripe aromas of pears and mini bananas are married to a rich, silky palate, where the power is skillfully underplayed and the long, mineral finish glides over the palate. Drink or hold.”

“This is rich, yet elegant, with loads of white raspberry, sweet pea, citrus oil and dried sage. It shows a bit of viscosity, with powerful spice notes that carry through to the long finish, along with plenty of macadamia nut and herbs. It is brilliantly harmonious already, but this will reveal much more with the years to come. Best after 2025.”

“A graceful version, this delivers fresh minerality to the well-spiced flavors of apple tart, baked pear and peach cobbler. The midpalate turns savory and thickens in texture, before the crunchy, vibrant finish sweeps it away. Wet stone and dried sage linger, inviting you to dive in deeper. Drink now through 2033.”

“Fabulous aromas and flavors of oolong tea and vanilla bean open up this complex white, before flavors turn to pineapple, grapefruit and savory mineral details on the palate. “Very well-knit, this stylish and complex white wine features a seductive character and a multilayered profile.
